Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Dodgers will be without their closer on Opening Day, announcing Tuesday that Kenley Jansen had surgery to remove a growth from a bone in his left foot.
The timetable for Jansen's return is roughly 8-to-12 weeks, meaning he will likely miss at least the first few weeks of the regular season.
Jansen established himself as one of the game's best closers last season when he struck out 101 batters over 65 1/3 innings and converted 44 of his 49 save chances.
In five big-league seasons, the hard-throwing righty has pitched to a 2.25 ERA with a microscopic 0.97 WHIP. The 27-year-old has totaled 106 saves over his career and averages more than 1.5 strikeouts per inning.
