Mike DiNunno finished with 17 points as Eastern Kentucky held on to beat Southern-Illinois Edwardsville 78-72 Saturday night in an Ohio Valley Conference showdown.
Corey Walden added 16 points, Eric Stutz chipped in with 13, and Orlando Williams scored 12 for Eastern Kentucky (12-3, 2-0).
Tied at 60 with 7:19 remaining, Eastern Kentucky went on a run to close out the SIU Edwardsville. After DiNunno made a 3-pointer, SIU Edwardsville tied the game for the last time with Michael Messer's 3-pointer with 5:37 left to play. Williams then scored four straight for the Colonels to give them a 67-63 lead, as Eastern Kentucky pulled away from there.
On top 74-67 with 30 seconds left to play, Eastern Kentucky made four consecutive free throws to seal the victory.
The Cougars shot 60 percent (27 for 45) for the game, but had 17 turnovers.
Jerome James led the Cougars with 15 points.
