Day, Compton lead delayed Zurich Classic

New Orleans, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jason Day and Erik Compton stood atop the leaderboard when the third round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans was suspended due to darkness.

Day, who led when the second round was completed earlier on Saturday, was 1- under par through three holes, while Compton jumped into a share of the lead thanks to four birdies in the first five holes. He parred the sixth before play was halted by darkness.

There was a 4-hour, 43-minute weather delay on Saturday at the TPC Louisiana. Delays the first two days pushed the completion of the second round into Saturday morning. Saturday's long delay came early in round three.

The third round will resume on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. ET. Officials hope to have final round tee times run from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. ET.

Blayne Barber, David Hearn, Justin Rose and Jerry Kelly were one stroke off the lead at minus-12.

Justin Thomas, Brendon de Jonge, Chris Stroud and Hudson Swafford shared seventh place at 11-under par.

Day birdied two of the final four holes of the second round to grab the 36- hole lead. Once he started the third round, Day birdied the second from four feet out to move to 13-under.

The Australian parred the first and third. Day knocked his approach at the par-4 fourth to 31 feet before the horn blew to stop play. He will have that putt when action resumes on Sunday.

"A very patient day. We've had days like this on the PGA Tour before, but obviously, I haven't had too many with the lead. It's something where I just need to keep staying patient," Day said. "Everyone's going through this. I know there's going to be a lot people frustrated with how long the waits are, I can't be one of those guys."

Compton had two birdies over his final five holes of round two to get within three of the lead. He started the third round with a 21-foot birdie putt at the first and, after the long weather delay, made it two in a row with a short birdie on No. 2.

The two-time heart transplant recipient rolled in an 11-footer for birdie at the fourth. Compton also birdied the fifth to move into the lead at minus-13. He parred the sixth and when he returns to the course Sunday morning, Compton will have a 7-foot birdie putt at the par-5 seventh.

NOTES: Day won for the third time on the PGA Tour earlier this year at the Farmers Insurance Open ... Compton is winless in 121 career PGA Tour starts ... Players will remain in the same groups for the final round.
