Kasey Kahne will attempt to recharge his season Sunday from the best vantage point.
Kahne won the pole Saturday for Sunday’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500 Sprint Cup race at Martinsville Speedway. The Hendrick Motorsports driver turned a fast lap of 97.128 miles per hour to edge Kevin Harvick (97.048) for the No. 1 starting spot.
In his first season at HMS, Kahne has had a tough start. After five races, he is 27th in the point standings.
Following Kahne and Harvick in the top five were Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer and Ryan Newman.
Jeff Gordon, who led both practice sessions Friday, was ninth in qualifying.
Tony Raines had the 41st fastest qualifying speed Saturday, but his time was disallowed when his Ford was found to be too low in post-qualifying inspection. The Raines car will not start the race, and he will be replaced by J.J. Yeley.
