Schierholtz spent the first six seasons of his career with the San Francisco Giants before getting traded to the Philadelphia Phillies last July.
He hit .257 with six home runs and 21 RBI through 114 games between the two clubs last season.
Over 540 career games, the 28-year-old is a .270 hitter with 75 doubles, 24 homers and 123 runs batted in.
The Cubs also outrighted pitcher Gerardo Concepcion to Single-A Kane County on Friday.
