Cuban prospect Hector Olivera is expected to make his much-anticipated major league debut for the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night.
Olivera, the key acquisition for the Braves in a three-team, 13-player deal at the trade deadline, is expected to start at third base versus the Miami Marlins.
The 30-year-old Cuban was the subject of an offseason bidding war won by the Los Angeles Dodgers, who signed him to a six-year, $62 million contract that included a $28 million signing bonus.
The Braves gave up plenty to get Olivera, shipping out pitchers Alex Wood, Jim Johnson and Luis Avilan along with second baseman Jose Peraza in the blockbuster trade. Olivera rose quickly through the Los Angeles system and was batting .387 in seven games at Triple-A Oklahoma City before sustaining a hamstring injury in mid-July that sidelined him for one month.
Olivera struggled through much of his rehab stint with Atlanta but has hit safely in five of the past six contests and doubled in each of his last three games at Triple-A Gwinnett - his first extra-base hits since the trade.
