One day after trading grinder Ryane Clowe, the San Jose Sharks found his potential replacement by acquiring veteran tough guy Raffi Torres from the Phoenix Coyotes just prior to Wednesday's trade deadline.
The Sharks will send the Coyotes a third-round pick in the 2013 draft for the controversial Torres, best known for a 21-game suspension he received for an illegal hit on Chicago Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa during last season's Western Conference quarterfinals.
Torres has recorded only 13 penalty minutes in 28 games with Phoenix this season, along with five goals and seven assists. The gritty forward tallied 15 goals in 79 games for the Coyotes last season and has scored 12 times or more in seven of the last nine years.
The 31-year-old also owns 56 career games of playoff experience and has registered eight goals and 16 assists in postseason play.
San Jose dealt Clowe to the New York Rangers on Tuesday in exchange for a package of draft picks, with the Sharks to receive second and third-round selections in this year's draft as well as a conditional second-round pick in 2014.
