Philadelphia, PA – In one of the more convincing upsets on day one, the third-seed Liberty Flames handed the second-seed Clemson Tigers, an 8-3 defeat in the first game of the Columbia Regional of the 2013 NCAA Tournament
Liberty (35-27) was paced by a huge day from Trey Wimmer who was 2-for-4 with a home run and a career-high six RBI. Ashton Perritt, Justin Sizemore, Alex Close and Jake Kimble each had multi-hit games with Close adding a solo home run. Josh Richardson was impressive on the mound as well scattering six hits and three runs in a complete-game effort.
Steven Duggar was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double but the rest of the Clemson (39-21) lineup went just 3-for-29 combined. Zack Erwin didn't get out of the third inning and allowed three runs, two earned, in taking the loss.
Regional host and top-seed South Carolina was able to capture a victory on Friday with a 7-3 win over the fourth-seed Saint Louis Billikens.
South Carolina (40-18) had a 3-1 lead going into the eighth inning but Saint Louis rallied to tie the game when two runs scored on a throwing error. However in the bottom of the inning the Gamecocks got a pair of RBI hits from Kyle Martin and Graham Saiko as well as a run on a throwing error and a wild pitch.
Saiko went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI and was one of five batters with multi-hit games for the Gamecocks. Tyler Webb earned the win by pitching two scoreless innings of relief while striking out five of the seven batters he faced.
Michael Bozarth went 2-for-4 for Saint Louis (41-20) and Clay Smith gave up four runs in seven innings to take the loss.
On Saturday Clemson and Saint Louis will meet up in the loser's bracket while South Carolina and Liberty will play later in the day in the winner's bracket. The winner of the Clemson/Saint Louis contest will face the loser between South Carolina and Liberty on Sunday for a spot in the regional final. The loser of the Clemson/Saint Louis contest on Saturday will be eliminated from the tournament.
