Second-seeded Marin Cilic lost, while reigning champion Philipp Kohlschreiber was among Wednesday's second-round winners at the $535,000 BMW Open.
Capable Croat Ivan Dodig drove out the two-time BMW runner-up and fellow countryman Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-2, while the fourth-seeded two-time champion Kohlschreiber continued his winning ways in Munich with a 6-2, 6-4 handling of Kazakhstani qualifier Evgeny Korolev on the red clay at MTTC Iphitos.
Kohlschreiber beat Cilic in last year's BMW title match.
Also on Day 3, fifth-seeded Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov snuck past Russian veteran Dmitry Tursunov 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3) and Serb Viktor Troicki got past Czech veteran Radek Stepanek 6-4, 6-4. Dolgopolov will meet Dodig, while Troicki will face Kohlschreiber in Friday's quarterfinals.
On Thursday, second-round matches will come for top-seeded Serb Janko Tipsarevic and third-seeded long-time German crowd favorite Tommy Haas, who was a Munich runner-up 13 years ago.
This week's winner will claim $96,000.
