Cards' Wainwright takes mound in San Francisco

(SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Wainwright tries to become the National League's first 11-game winner on Wednesday when the St. Louis Cardinals continue their three-game series with the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.

Wainwright was denied a win his last time out in Los Angeles, but it was through no fault of his own, as he gave up a just a run and five hits in eight innings to the Dodgers. Still, he fell to 10-4 to go along with a 2.01 ERA in his team's 1-0 loss.

Over four June starts Wainwright was 2-1 with a 1.16 ERA. He has finished at least eight innings in eight of his 16 starts and has allowed one run or less in 10 of them.

San Francisco, though, has given Wainwright fits over the course of his career and that was certainly the case back on May 30, when the Giants reached him for seven runs in 4 1/3 innings. He is 3-5 lifetime against them with a 3.38 ERA in nine starts.

Opposing Wainwright will be righty Ryan Vogelsong, who has lost two of his last three decisions. Vogelsong was defeated by Cincinnati on Thursday, but was terrific, as he gave up just a run and five hits and struck out seven over six innings of his team's 3-1 loss.

Vogelsong, who is 5-4 with a 3.96 ERA on the year, did not get a decision versus the Cardinals earlier in the year and is 2-5 in 18 games (8 starts) against them with a 6.60 ERA.

San Francisco can only hope Vogelsong delivers the way Tim Lincecum did in Tuesday's opener, as the right-hander followed up his no-hitter from a week ago by tossing eight scoreless innings in the Giants' 5-0 win.

Pablo Sandoval smacked his 100th career homer in the win to help San Francisco snap a four-game losing streak and move a half game back in front of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.

Marco Gonzales (0-1) surrendered five runs on seven hits and four walks over 4 1/3 frames for St. Louis, which has dropped five of its last seven games.

San Francisco has won four of its five matchups with the Cardinals this season.
