The St. Louis Cardinals recalled rookie pitcher Michael Blazek from Double-A Springfield on Sunday after placing left- handed starter John Gast on the 15-day disabled list.
Blazek, 24, will be making his major league debut with his first appearance. He pitched in 17 games with Springfield this season, allowing two earned runs and 11 hits while striking out 25 over 19 2/3 innings.
The righty becomes the ninth pitcher age 25 or younger to have appeared on the Cardinals roster this season. The Cards' pitching staff has utilized six rookie hurlers this season who have combined for 11 wins.
Gast, one of the six rookies, strained his shoulder in the first inning of Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Dodgers. He was 2-0 with a 5.11 earned run average in three starts with St. Louis this season.
