Cardinals pick Matheny as next manager

St. Louis, MO – The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Sunday that former catcher Mike Matheny will be named the next manager of the team on Monday.

The Cardinals issued a press release stating that the 41-year-old Matheny, who retired from baseball on February 1, 2007, will be introduced at a press conference at 12:00 p.m. (et) on Monday.

He takes over the position made vacant after Tony La Russa retired following this past season that saw him guide the Cardinals to their 11th World Series title.
