St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams is expected to miss the next 3-to-4 months while recovering from a severe right quadriceps strain that he suffered running the bases on Tuesday.

He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday.

According to MLB.com, the Cardinals and Adams are still deliberating whether the injury will require surgery.

Mark Reynolds played first base for the Cardinals in Wednesday night's game against the Diamondbacks and will be the primary starter there for the foreseeable future.

The 26-year-old Adams was hitting .243 with four home runs and 20 RBI over 43 games this season.
