Strasbourg, France (SportsNetwork.com) - American Madison Brengle and Mona Barthel lost their first-round matches Sunday at the Strasbourg International, a final clay-court French Open tune-up.
Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia cruised past Brengle, the No. 7 seed, by a 6-1, 6-1 margin at Strasbourg Tennis Club.
Virginie Razzano of France was leading the eighth-seeded Barthel 6-2, 5-5 when the German retired with a right wrist injury.
Americans Sloane Stephens and Shelby Rogers posted wins. Stephens beat Ukrainian qualifier Nadiia Kichenok 6-3, 6-0 and Rogers handled Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia 6-1, 6-1.
Zheng Saisai, Elena Vesnina and Lesia Tsurenko wrapped up the Day 1 winners.
Puerto Rican Monica Puig defeated Spaniard Silvia Soler Espinosa in last year's final.
