New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount for making contact with an umpire in Sunday's game against Baltimore.
Ortiz has filed an appeal of the suspension, which was scheduled to take place in Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He will be allowed to play until the appeals process is complete.
In the fifth inning of Sunday's loss to the Orioles, Ortiz disagreed with a check swing call made by third base umpire Jerry Meals on a 1-1 pitch. He dropped his bat and threw his arms in the air before beginning to argue.
Home plate umpire John Tumpane intervened and ejected Ortiz, and the slugger made contact with Tumpane after being ejected.
Daniel Nava completed the at-bat with a groundout.
