Los Angeles, CA – The Los Angeles Dodgers signed veteran outfielder Bobby Abreu to a one-year contract on Friday.
Abreu, 38, was released by the Angels last week after batting .208 in eight games this year. He joined the Angels in 2009 and averaged 14 home runs, 33 doubles and 80 RBI in three full seasons with the club.
"Bobby has consistently performed throughout his career and brings his winning experience to the clubhouse," said Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti. "He gives us a left-handed bat off the bench and will also see time in the outfield. He has been a very good hitter throughout his career, he knows how to work a count and has been a run producer."
The native of Venezuela is a career .293 hitter with 557 doubles, 284 homers, 393 stolen bases and 1,330 RBI over 17 seasons with the Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees and Angels.
A two-time All-Star, Abreu is one of four players in MLB history with more than 250 home runs, 350 stolen bases and 500 doubles, joining Barry Bonds, Rickey Henderson and Craig Biggio.
To make room on the roster for Abreu, the Dodgers optioned infielder Justin Sellers to Triple-A Albuquerque.
