The second-seed Oklahoma Sooners dug themselves out of an early hole to post a 7-3 victory over the third-seed Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in the first game of the Blacksburg Regional of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
Coastal Carolina jumped out a 3-0 lead after the first two innings against Oklahoma (41-19) starter Jonathan Gray but the right-hander settled from there and ended up pitching a complete game while striking out 11 batters to earn the win. Max White was the offensive star for the Sooners as he went 4-for-5 with two RBI.
Ted Blackman, Colin Hering and Chris Suseck each had two-hit games for Coastal Carolina (37-22). Patrick Corbett took the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, in two innings of relief work.
In the second game of the regional the fourth-seed Connecticut Huskies stunned the top-seed and host Virginia Tech Hokies, 5-2.
Bobby Melley was 4-for-5 with an RBI as one of six batters to record a multi- hit game for UConn (35-26). Carson Cross was able to lead the Huskies to victory by allowing just a single run over 6 1/3 innings pitched while Pat Butler got the save despite allowing a run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Virginia Tech (38-21) starter Joe Mantiply was hurt by a costly error in the fifth inning that led to three unearned runs. Mantiply's final line was 4 2/3 innings, 10 hits and four runs with only one earned. Sean Keselica was 1-for-4 and had the only RBI of the game for the Hokies.
On Saturday Virginia Tech and Coastal Carolina will meet up in the loser's bracket while Oklahoma and UConn will play later in the day in the winner's bracket. The winner of the Virginia Tech/Coastal Carolina contest will face the loser between Oklahoma and UConn on Sunday for a spot in the regional final. The loser of the Virginia Tech/Coastal Carolina contest on Saturday will be eliminated from the tournament.
