Blackhawks aim to bounce back against 'Canes

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago Blackhawks will try to rebound from their worst loss of the month when they continue a four-game road trip with Monday's battle against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Chicago began its swing with a 1-0 win over the New York Rangers on Wednesday. That marked the Blackhawks' fourth straight victory and eighth in 10 games, but Joel Quenneville's club was humbled Saturday in a 4-0 setback against the Dallas Stars.

Kari Lehtonen frustrated the Chicago offense, turning aside all 33 shots he faced for the shutout win. Corey Crawford, meanwhile, allowed all four goals on 29 shots, yielding two in the first period and two more in the third.

"Tonight I thought we got outworked and that was right from the outset," Quenneville said. "They were the better team."

Chicago had a three-game road winning streak snapped and fell to 21-13-1 as the guest this season. The Blackhawks still sit third in the Central Division, where they are five points ahead of Minnesota. Chicago is four behind Nashville and five in back of first-place St. Louis.

The Blackhawks, who will complete this trek Wednesday in Philadelphia, are expected to go with Crawford in net again tonight. He is 4-2-0 with a 2.31 goals against average in six career games versus Carolina.

Carolina, meanwhile, is not a factor in the Eastern Conference playoff race and hasn't done well in the spoiler role lately, losing three straight and six of its last seven games.

The Hurricanes fell to 2-5-3 in March with Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss against the visiting Rangers.

Carolina trailed New York 2-1 after 40 minutes, but was able to send the game to overtime thanks to Ryan Murphy's power-play tally with 5:33 remaining in the third period.

However, Mats Zuccarello beat Anton Khudobin with a forehand deke for the only goal in the shootout to hand the extra point to the Rangers.

"We started playing our game in the third period," said Khudobin. "I think we started to move the puck a little bit better."

Cam Ward could get the start for Carolina on Monday. The veteran netminder has been dealing with an illness and hasn't played since March 14 against Florida. Ward owns a 3-1-2 record and 1.72 GAA in six lifetime appearances against Chicago.

Saturday's test began a four-game homestand for the Hurricanes, who fell to 15-14-6 as the host.

Chicago ended a seven-game winless drought at Carolina when it posted a 3-2 shootout win in Raleigh on Oct. 15, 2013. The Blackhawks have won three straight overall in this series and recorded a 5-2 home victory over the Hurricanes on March 2.
