World No. 6 Tomas Berdych won his first match of 2013 by besting Indian wild card Somdev Devvarman in a second-round affair Thursday at the ATP World Tour's season-opening Chennai Open.

The top-seeded former Wimbledon runner-up Berdych raced past the 2009 Chennai runner-up Devvarman in 6-3, 6-1 fashion at SDAT Tennis Stadium.

Berdych's quarterfinal opponent on Friday will be Spaniard Roberto Bautista- Agut, who handled German Matthias Bachinger 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 on Day 4.

Also on Thursday, third-seeded and two-time Chennai champion Marin Cilic of Croatia overcame Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 and fifth-seeded Frenchman Benoit Paire tattooed Israeli veteran Dudi Sela 6-1, 6-0.

Friday's other quarters will pit second-seeded Serbian star Janko Tipsarevic against eighth-seeded Japanese Go Soeda, Cilic versus Paire, and fourth-seeded Swiss slugger Stanislas Wawrinka against Slovenian Aljaz Bedene. Wawrinka titled here two years ago and was the Chennai runner-up in 2010.

Tipsarevic was last year's Chennai runner-up to Canadian Milos Raonic.

This event serves as a hardcourt tune-up for the Australian Open, which will commence January 14.
