Barthel wins Bastad opener

Seventh-seeded German Mona Barthel posted an easy first-round win Monday at the $220,000 Swedish Open.

Barthel blew past Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens 6-3, 6-2 at Bastad Tennis Stadium.

A Day-1 upset came when Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko dismissed eighth-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro 7-5, 6-0, following a rain delay.

This week's top seeds are Sara Errani and German Julia Goerges. The surprise French Open runner-up Errani is fresh off her clay-court title in Palermo in her native Italy last week.

Slovenian Polona Hercog beat Sweden's own Johanna Larsson in last year's Bastad finale.

The 2012 Bastad champion will earn $37,000.

Spain's David Ferrer captured the ATP World Tour's edition of this event last week.
