Atletico Madrid edges Levante is second-half thriller
Madrid, Spain – Atletico Madrid earned a 3-2 victory over Levante on Sunday with all five goals coming with just 21 minutes remaining in the second half.
After scoreless 68 minutes, Pizzi kicked off the thrilling conclusion to give Atletico the lead, but Xavi Torres equalized for Levante three minutes later.
Adrian and Diego helped secure the win for Atletico with strikes in the 75th and 83rd minutes, but not before Ruben Suarez pulled a goal back in stoppage time to make for an uneasy finish at the Vicente Calderon.
Atletico moves into the top half of the table after winning two of its last three La Liga contests. It sits in ninth place with 16 points.
Levante continues to struggle, missing out on an opportunity to claim third place in the table with its third-straight loss.
Sporting Gijon 2, Getafe 1
Gijon, Spain - Sporting Gijon extended its unbeaten streak in La Liga to five games with a dramatic comeback win, defeating Getafe, 2-1, at El Molinon on Sunday.
Miku provided the opening goal to give Getafe the lead in the 35th minute, but Oscar Trejo equalized for Sporting Gijon just before halftime. The game-winner came in the 90th minute from Nacho Novo, who managed to score his first goal of the season at a crucial time.
After beginning the season winless from its first seven matches, Sporting Gijon has won three of its last five to pull out of the relegation zone. It sits 14th in the table with 12 points on the season.
With two losses in its last three games, Getafe has managed ten points from its opening 12 league contests.
Athletic Bilbao 2, Sevilla 1
Bilbao, Spain - Oscar de Marcos scored in the 71st minute to help Athletic Bilbao claim three points in a vital 2-1 win over Sevilla on Sunday.
Athletic Bilbao's Andoni Iraola and Sevilla's Jesus Navas exchanged goals inside the opening 15 minutes of the game, but Marcos found the winner in the second half to extend Bilbao's unbeaten streak to eight games in La Liga play.
With the win, Athletic Bilbao moves into the top half of the table with 17 points, just one point shy of fifth-place Sevilla.
Real Sociedad 0, Espanyol 0
San Sebastian, Spain - Real Sociedad held Espanyol to a 0-0 draw at home on Sunday, snapping a three-game losing skid.
With nine points on the year, Real Sociedad moves into a three-way tie with Racing Santander and Granada for last place in La Liga.
Espanyol sits seventh in the table with 17 points after its second successive draw.
Osasuna 0, Rayo Vallecano 0
Navarra, Spain - Osasuna was held scoreless at home on Sunday, as it played to a 0-0 draw with Rayo Vallecano at the Reyno de Navarra.
Despite the absence of any scoring, it was a physical contest littered with yellow cards. Rayo Vallecano received five cautions compared to Osasuna's three.
Osasuna, coming off of a 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Real Madrid, and Rayo Vallecano are separated by a single point in the La Liga table with Rayo Vallecano holding the edge with 16 points on the year.
Granada 2, Mallorca 1 (Suspended)
Granada, Spain - Two second-half goals powered Granada to a 2-1 lead over Mallorca, but play was abandoned after the assistant referee was struck by an object from the crowd.
Victor had given Mallorca the advantage in the 23rd minute, but Granada responded in the second period with goals from Guilherme Siqueira and Carlos Martins just four minutes apart.
