Athletics try to keep momentum going against Tigers

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Oakland Athletics look to build off their first series victory in a month on Tuesday night when they open a three-game series with the Detroit Tigers.

The Athletics won their four-game set with the New York Yankees by taking Sunday's finale 3-0, their sixth victory in the last nine games overall. Oakland hadn't won a series since claiming two of three against Texas from May 1-3.

Stephen Vogt drove in all three runs on Sunday, hitting a two-run homer in the sixth frame before adding a sacrifice fly in the eighth. The catcher continues to break out this season, batting .322 with 11 homers and 38 RBI.

Billy Burns went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of steals, while Jesse Chavez didn't waste Vogt's support by scattering seven hits -- all singles -- with six strikeouts over eight scoreless innings.

"He did a great job mixing all his pitches," said Vogt of Chavez. "Any time you've got your whole arsenal working for you and you're doing it like he was doing it, you're going to have an opportunity to go eight innings like he did."

Kendall Graveman will make his third start for the Athletics since returning from a month-long demotion that followed early-season struggles.

Graveman was 1-2 with an 8.27 earned run average following a loss to Houston on April 25. He was then demoted to Triple-A before returning on May 23 following an injury to Drew Pomeranz. Graveman won that outing versus Tampa Bay with six scoreless innings of work.

The right-hander then faced the New York Yankees on Thursday and did not factor into a 5-4 win, charged with three runs on seven hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings. He remained 2-2 on the year while lowering his ERA to 5.79.

Graveman, 24, has never faced the Tigers.

Detroit will be looking to get on track tonight after getting swept in a four- game set by the Los Angeles Angels. The Tigers dropped Sunday's finale 4-2 for their seventh loss in nine games.

David Price was charged with four runs on eight hits as he took his first loss since April 22. He came out to pitch the eighth inning and loaded the bases with one out before getting pinch-hitter Carlos Perez to pop out.

Reliever Joba Chamberlain was then called in from the bullpen, but yielded a two-run, go-ahead single to Johnny Giavotella.

"David pitched really well. An outstanding performance," said Tigers manager Brad Ausmus. "After 7 2/3 innings I thought he was done."

Miguel Cabrera extended his streak of reaching base to 20 games on Sunday as he went 1-for-3 with a walk.

Alfredo Simon will make his first start for the Tigers tonight since May 22 as he returns from a stay on the bereavement list following the death of his father.

Simon snapped a four-start winless stretch with a victory over Houston last time out. He held the Astros to a pair of unearned runs on four hits and a walk in seven innings of work. Simon also struck out five, improving to 5-2 with a 2.67 ERA on the campaign.

The right-hander will make his second career start and sixth appearance versus the Athletics, who he is 0-2 against with a 9.00 ERA and one save.

These two clubs combined to score just 10 runs over a three-game set in Oakland from May 25-27, with Detroit winning twice. The Tigers have won six of their past seven versus the A's overall.
