The Oakland Athletics claimed infielder Luke Hughes off waivers from the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.

Hughes played a career-best 96 games for Minnesota last season, batting .223 with seven home runs and 30 runs batted in. He earned a spot on the Twins' Opening Day roster this year, and accrued two hits and two RBI before being waived to make room for pitcher Jason Marquis.

The 27-year-old Australian has a career .224 batting average with eight homers and 33 RBI over 102 games.

The A's transferred pitcher Dallas Braden to the 60-day disabled list from the 15-day DL to make room for Hughes on the 40-man roster, and announced that a corresponding 25-man roster move would be made once Hughes reports to Oakland.
