South African Kevin Anderson and Russian Nikolay Davydenko opened with first-round wins Sunday at the $4 million Madrid Open, an ATP World Tour 1000 Masters event.
Anderson needed just 80 minutes to top Russia's Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-3, 6-2 on the all-new blue clay at The Magic Box.
Davydenko took slightly longer to knock off Croatia's Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
Novak Djokovic beat Spanish hero and two-time Madrid champ Rafael Nadal in last year's final. Djokovic, Nadal and two-time champ Roger Federer are the top seeds this week.
Nadal holds the record with 20 Masters titles, including one in Monte Carlo last month.
The 2012 Madrid Open champ will earn $770,000.
