An ankle injury has forced two-time champion Victoria Azarenka to withdraw at the Sony Open, and American Lauren Davis has quickly gone from being a lucky loser to a lucky winner.
Given a spot in the draw only after Azarenka pulled out Friday, Davis took advantage of shaky play by Madison Keys in the decisive tiebreaker to win their second-round match, 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7).
Davis trailed 6-3 in the tiebreaker and then saved three match consecutive points, all on unforced errors by Keys.
The victory was the first of Davis' career at Key Biscayne, and the 19-year-old Ohio native barely made the tournament. She learned at 10 a.m. that Azarenka had withdrawn, and an hour later she was playing on the stadium court.
