The San Francisco 49ers have extended the contract of general manager Trent Baalke through 2016.

49ers president and CEO Jed York announced the move via his Twitter account on Friday.

Baalke, who was promoted to the GM spot in January 2011, turned around a San Francisco squad that had not had a winning season since the 2002 campaign. The 2011 49ers posted a 13-3 regular season record, took the NFC West division title, and won their first playoff game since 2002 with a 36-32 victory over New Orleans in the NFC Divisional round before falling to the New York Giants in the NFC Championship game.

The 47-year-old Baalke had previously served as the club's vice president of player personnel. He joined San Francisco in 2005 as the team's Western Region Scout, a position he held through 2007. He was the 49ers' director of player personnel from 2008-09 prior to his promotion to vice president of player personnel.

York also announced that chief strategy officer Gideon Yu has been promoted to franchise president.
