Travelers clash over whether cruise lines should allow dogs and cats on board or not

A long-standing debate about traveling with pets has been reignited as a Denver, Colorado-based cruise operator starts accepting dogs and cats onboard its ships.

Fabled Voyages, a residential cruise startup, began accepting deposits on March 30, 2026, positioning its pet-friendly policy as a primary selling point for 15-year residencies.

"With a desire to travel the world and include our dachshunds with us, the safest and easiest method was through a yacht [or] ship," the company told Fox News Digital.

The founders noted that while private yachts offer freedom, they lack the scale and amenities of a large-scale residential ship.

Most major cruise lines prohibit non-service animals due to practical challenges such as sanitation, limited space, allergies and strict port regulations, according to Travel Noire.

Last year, however, Margaritaville at Sea offered a much-hyped dog-friendly cruise in November 2025.

The 6-night Caribbean trip on the Islander ship was designed for 250 dogs and their owners, CruiseHive said.

Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 offers a limited kennel program, according to CruiseCritic — while niche operators like Cruise Tails run occasional dog-focused sailings.

"Our Residential Cruise ship is not solely about the cruise experience, but more importantly, [it] minimizes the barriers to living a fulfilling life [and] traveling the world with those that matter," Fabled Voyages said.

To keep both pet parents and non-pet passengers happy, the ship will feature designated residential areas and pet-specific zones. The company will even have grooming and veterinary services onboard, it said.

The cruise line will offer global itineraries that include South America, Southeast Asia, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

Under its 2026 program, dogs up to 40 pounds and cats up to 20 pounds will be allowed in cabins, provided the animals pass veterinary clearance and meet international travel requirements.

International regulations remain a major hurdle. Countries such as China, Jamaica and Iceland enforce strict entry requirements, the USDA Animal and Plant Inspection Service stipulates.

Animals, of course, are nothing new to ocean travel. The Titanic famously carried at least a dozen dogs, complete with kennels and daily exercise routines, according to Smithsonian magazine.

Now, the tide may be turning again. Residential cruises are one of the fastest-growing corners of the cruise market. Yet travelers are strongly divided about having pets onboard.

In a Reddit discussion about cruises with pets — not specifically about Fabled Voyages — passengers were split.

Companies "should have specific dog cruises. My dogs would love that," one traveler said.

"We have dogs onboard, pet state rooms ... and no one cares. It is just normal," another person agreed.

But the concept was a hard "no" for many cruise lovers.

"Absolutely not! Not on planes, buses, trains and not on ships. Not everybody is comfortable surrounded by animals," a Reddit user said, referring to pets on cruises in general, not Fabled Voyages.

"I don’t want to have to avoid dog poop on my vacation ... or hear your dog bark in your stateroom," said another person. "True service animals are fine ... your labradoodle isn’t fine."

Another complained, "If people on ships are similar to those on land, there will be dog poop on the decks, and people will let their dogs bark in their staterooms while they go to the casino or something."

Yet another said, "Yeah, so you can bring it to the ... buffet, and [we'll] have dog hair in our food? ... Can I bring my cat, horse, cow, sheep, goat, turtle, goldfish, parrot and iguana, too?"

A Carnival Cruise Line ship came to the rescue of a stranded sailor and his cat on Tuesday, April 14, after crew members spotted distress signals coming from a disabled sailboat in open waters on the ship's path from Galveston, Texas, to Cozumel, Mexico.

The Carnival Legend was sailing a Caribbean itinerary when crew members noticed emergency flares.

They acted swiftly — deploying a small boat to bring the man and his cat, Dahlia, safely onboard, as video captured at the scene shows.

"The sailor and his cat are safe and doing well," Carnival Cruise Line told Fox News Digital in a statement.

The sailor had been drifting for several days after having engine issues.

"The sailor is currently being cared for by Legend’s medical team," Carnival also said in its statement.

It did not release the man's name.

Passengers aboard the ship witnessed the dramatic rescue as it unfolded, with many describing it as a memorable and emotional moment during their trip.

"We've been on probably 30 cruises before and never experienced anything like this," a cruise passenger and his wife told Fox 26 in an interview.

"To be out in the middle of the ocean, and then you look out, and you see a spotlight shining on a sailboat that was just kind of going up and down in the waves … You could tell [the sailboat] was distressed."

Dahlia the cat quickly became an unexpected guest aboard the ship, drawing attention from travelers and crew alike.

The Carnival Legend is a Spirit-class cruise ship that launched in 2002 after being built in Finland, according to the company.

The ship is about 963 feet long and can accommodate roughly 2,100 passengers, along with a crew of around 900.

Over the years, the Legend has sailed a range of itineraries, including the Caribbean and Alaska, while undergoing updates to add modern amenities.

Cheap surgery overseas may come with devastating complications, doctors warn

More than three million people travel to undergo cosmetic surgery each year, statistics show — but the potential savings come at a cost.

Most people opting to pursue this so-called "medical tourism" are chasing budget-friendly price tags.

International surgeries, such as hair transplants in Turkey, can cost as little as $4,000 to $5,000 compared to $20,000 to $30,000 in the U.S., but often come with extreme risks, according to board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sheila Nazarian of California.

The doctor recently joined Lisa Brady on the "The FOX News Rundown" podcast to discuss the rising trend of medical tourism. One of the biggest risks, she said, is the lack of safety regulations in popular destinations like Mexico and Turkey.

As demand spikes in these medical tourism "mills," there have been reports of non-medically trained staff performing procedures like hair transplants.

"I’ve heard that they [international clinics] are even recruiting people who maybe were taxi drivers and then putting them through their own training program ... to become hair transplant technicians," Nazarian said. "That’s how high the demand has become."

In the U.S., medical school graduates are granted a "physician and surgeon" license, which means doctors — including pediatricians or OB-GYNs — can legally perform cosmetic surgeries, even if they didn’t receive specialized training for those procedures during residency, Nazarian noted.

Instead of pinching pennies, the doctor recommended paying whatever amount is necessary to ensure quality treatment.

"People think of it as, you know, going to the mall. ... It’s surgery, and surgery has risks," she said. "You need to be with someone who not only can perform a beautiful surgery, but who can handle possible complications well."

"You need to ask them: ‘What was your residency training in? And if you wanted to, would you be allowed to do this procedure in a hospital?’"

Aftercare is another critical factor in the success and safety of a cosmetic procedure, as the doctor emphasized that 20% of a surgical result depends on post-operative care.

This can be difficult or even impossible to manage when a doctor is in a different time zone, she cautioned, or if the clinic disappears shortly after the procedure.

Nazarian also noted the importance of addressing the psychological component of plastic surgery, noting that no procedure will fix underlying unhappiness. The doctor said she uses screening questionnaires to ensure that patients are truly seeking self-improvement rather than a "cure" for deeper issues.

"If you’re not already generally very content with your life, a knife in my hand is not going to bring you there," Nazarian said.

"The analogy I always give is you don't want a paisley couch — you want a neutral couch and you can put paisley pillows on it," she said, noting that a procedure should "make you look normal, God-given, athletic. And then you can change your clothes when the trends come and go."

Samuel Golpanian, M.D., a double board-certified plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, said he has also seen an increasing number of patients undergoing cosmetic procedures abroad, sometimes with "devastating consequences."

"I’ve seen a wide range of complications, including infections, poor wound healing, significant scarring and tissue necrosis (skin death)," he told Fox News Digital. "These complications often lead to prolonged pain, ongoing medical problems, and significant additional costs to repair the damage."

Golpanian said he’s treated patients who received unsafe or non-medical-grade injectable materials, which can lead to serious long-term health issues.

"I’ve also seen damage to underlying structures, asymmetry and results that are extremely difficult — sometimes impossible — to correct."

"That said, I’ve also seen some good outcomes, so it’s not all bad," he noted. "The key is being extremely careful before embarking on this journey."

Quick tips for safe ‘medical tourism’

Fully vet the surgeon. "Most surgeons will provide information about their education and training, but it’s important not to accept these claims at face value," Golpanian said. "Verify them directly by contacting the institutions where they trained."

Ask for references from prior patients. Ideally, it’s best to get references from U.S.-based patients who can speak candidly about both their experience and their results, the surgeonsaid.

Think beyond the cost. Golpanian emphasized the adage "you get what you pay for." "Cost should take a back seat to experience, training, judgment and proven results," he advised.

Be cautious about relying on before-and-after photos. These can be selective or even enhanced, Golpanian warned.

Keep aftercare in focus. "Make sure the practice emphasizes comprehensive follow-up care and has a clear, realistic post-operative plan in place."

Americans are being warned to rethink travel to a sunny Caribbean destination as crime and concerns about terrorism rise.

The U.S. Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago announced Thursday that the U.S. Department of State had updated its travel advisory regarding American tourists.

The advisory cautions that Americans should "reconsider travel to Trinidad and Tobago due to crime," citing a "heightened risk of terrorism."

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is authorized to search and enter private and public properties while the State of Emergency (SOE), which was declared March 2, remains in effect.

Authorities say the order is due to "a spike in violent criminal activity that could threaten public safety."

The embassy said that "although violent crime in Trinidad and Tobago has dropped greatly since 2024 due to security efforts started during the previous state of emergencies, crime remains a challenge throughout the country" — adding that crime rates are lower in Tobago than in Trinidad.

The advisory also states that U.S. government employees are prohibited from entering certain areas of the capital city, Port of Spain, including Laventille, Piccadilly Street and Besson Street.

Many drivers across the U.S. are flocking to tribal gas stations as a way to save money, amid high fuel prices during the ongoing Iran conflict.

In Washington state, one driver said she went out of her way to fill up her car's gas tank on tribal land after noticing a significant price difference.

"I purposely drove here just for the gas," traveler Junelle Lewis told The Associated Press while filling up her SUV at a station on the Tulalip Reservation.

The Tulalip Tribes is a federally recognized Indian tribe in the mid-Puget Sound region of Washington state, according to its website.

Lewis paid about 75 cents less per gallon than nearby stations, she told AP.

Gas prices nationwide have risen by more than $1 since late February, reaching an average of about $4.15 per gallon, according to AAA, although prices have been stabilizing somewhat since then.

For some drivers, the savings at tribal stations can add up quickly.

In parts of California and New Mexico, fuel has been reported to cost 50 to 60 cents less per gallon compared to nearby locations.

The difference often comes down to taxes.

Tribal gas stations typically do not pay state fuel taxes when selling on tribal land, allowing them to offer lower prices in many cases. Federal fuel taxes still apply, but the exemption from state taxes can create a noticeable price gap.

The U.S. has hundreds of tribally owned gas stations — many located along major travel routes, making them accessible options for drivers looking to cut costs.

Savings, however, are not guaranteed everywhere.

Some drivers say the price difference depends heavily on location and state tax rates.

On Reddit, travelers shared a variety of experiences, with some reporting significant savings and others saying the difference was minimal.

"Filled up on [a reservation] last weekend for $3.50 while the average is around $4," one user wrote.

"If I can save a buck every two gallons, you bet I am driving out … to refill," one user wrote.

Others noted that in areas with lower fuel taxes, the savings may be smaller or nonexistent.

Airport lounges were once the destination of a select few. But recently, the premium spaces are becoming increasingly crowded — and chaos is following in some cases.

Stories are going viral about passengers raiding complimentary buffets in lounges, and children wreaking havoc while distracted parents are unfazed.

At one airport lounge in a major New York City airport not long ago, witnesses watched in shock as a couple ordered six signature burgers and multiple orders of buns, the "View from the Wing" blog reported.

Instead of eating the premium patties, the couple stuffed the burgers into a large duffel, adding desserts snatched from the buffet, the blog added.

Then, to conceal the heist, apparently, the couple stashed the greasy plates behind decorative planters, the blog noted.

"Lounges have become more crowded, and the demographic makeup of U.S. airport lounges has changed," Gary Leff, the author of the blog, told Fox News Digital.

"Once the province of memberships and cheese cubes for solo business travelers, the lounges are increasingly accessed via credit card by premium leisure travelers," said Leff, who is based in Texas.

Leff noted that during the recent shutdown, U.S. travelers arrived at airports very early.

"The mores and norms associated with [airport lounges] have changed, and that stands out especially to those whose expectations are built on an earlier era," Leff said.

Another viral incident was captured by a photo of an airport lounge after young children seemed to wreak havoc there.

A traveler snapped a photo at a sky club lounge in a western U.S. airport showing kids' small suitcases opened, with clothes, sneakers and water bottles strewn all over the floor, the "Aviation A2Z" blog reported.

Surprisingly, most Reddit users came to the family's defense.

"Honestly, if their kids aren’t being terrors to everyone else, and it’s contained to a seating area for four people, and they [clean] everything up, this is fine in my book," one Reddit user said.

"The parents found a space to hang out away from everyone else, and took a small area for themselves that has no impact on anyone else," another commenter said.

California-based Brett Snyder, author of the "Cranky Flier" blog, sees the chaos differently.

"Etiquette probably hasn't changed much recently. The issue is that everyone has a camera, and they are recording all the bad behavior and posting it publicly," Snyder told Fox News Digital.

Travelers may be slapped with 'ridiculous' new fees as popular city seeks millions per year

Many popular destinations struggling with overtourism and infrastructure issues are aiming to fix those problems in an often unpopular way by enacting new taxes on tourists.

The city of Galway, on the west side of Ireland, is widely known for its medieval streets, colorful shopfronts and historical landmarks. It is now considering a tourist tax that could generate more than $2.1 million annually in the city, according to The Connacht Tribune newspaper.

The proposal envisions an accommodation charge of $1.10 to $2.20 per visitor, per night, for tourists staying in hotels or short-term lodging.

Sally-Ann O’Brien, Galway City Council’s new tourism officer, spoke at a meeting this week to address concerns, the Tribune reported.

O’Brien noted that many international visitors come from Europe and are used to paying a tax, according to the Irish Independent newspaper.

Any tourism levy would require legislation and approval from the Irish government at the national level.

That's good news for opponents of the proposal. At least three prominent local leaders have voiced their concern.

When the Galway City Council discussed a motion to explore a tourist tax in 2024, a former mayor and a well-known business executive both expressed dismay.

A former mayor of Galway, Eddie Hoare, said a tourist tax could "send out the wrong message."

Pat McDonagh, the founder of Supermacs, a popular fast-food chain in Ireland, called the proposal a "ridiculous idea" on Newstalk Breakfast in September 2024.

"We would be the laughingstock of the country if we introduced a tourist tax," he said.

Recent data shows Galway continues to attract many visitors.

Fáilte Ireland’s Key Tourism Facts 2024: Galway, a fact sheet published in 2025, reported some 1 million international visitors and 1.4 million domestic tourists, generating more than $1.08 billion.

Travelers took to Reddit to weigh in on the proposed tax.

"The local authority ought to consider what it is they’re actually offering tourists at this point, and if it’s worth what they expect them to be paying anymore," one Reddit user said.

Tirana, Albania, is the subject of a travel advisory issued by the U.S. Embassy in Albania on April 1.

The embassy, located in Tirana, cited Iran-related tensions as the reason behind the alert.

Tourism in Las Vegas continues to decline — with about 38.5 million visitors last year, a 7.5% drop from 2024, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCA).

Rick Harrison of the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas and of "Pawn Stars" TV fame told Fox News Digital that his store experienced record-breaking months in both January and February of this year.

"You give customers what they want, and they return," he said in an interview. "A lot of hotels on the Strip — they're not hospitals where you have to go to them. There are choices out there. So, they're changing their pricing around."

He said a big part of the success for Vegas venues in terms of drawing in tourists is customer experience.

"I have a pawn shop. I changed it into a tourist destination, and people for years [said], ‘You get thousands of people a day at the store, you should charge them something.’ I'm going, ‘No,’ because I want them to come to the store," said Harrison.

He noted that back in the day, the prices of hotel rooms, food and experiences were not as high — making trips to Sin City more attainable for most Americans.

"I want to make sure all of my [visitors] have smiling faces, that they have a great time," he said. "So when they go back to Ohio or Alabama or something, they tell their friends, 'Next time you're in Vegas, you really should go to Rick's Pawn Shop.'"

Harrison said he's seen some casinos dropping their prices and offering more deals to tourists, such as modified all-inclusives.

Many officials, hotel owners and travel experts have cited a drop in Canadian tourism as a major reason tourism numbers have been down.

Circa Resort & Casino, for its part, has launched an "at par" promotion — making the exchange rate for Canadians equal at its properties.

"Canadian [visitors] are down anywhere from 20% to 50%, depending on what month you look at over the course of the last year," casino owner Derek Stevens previously told Fox News Digital.

Harrison said he's seeing a decline in Asian tourism right now. "I don't think that's necessarily [about] Las Vegas. I think that's currency issues and economic issues."

Rising gas prices, driven by oil hovering at nearly $100 per barrel amid the war with Iran, are creating uncertainty for the summer tourism season.

Harrison said gas in Las Vegas is over five dollars a gallon currently.

"The problem is we get our gasoline from California refineries, so it's a couple of dollars less than California, because California's got a crazy tax on everything — but that is tough in Nevada right now," he said.

Cavemen hunted turtles — but not for food, new research suggests.

Scientists say that shells of reptiles caught by children may have been used as ladles or digging devices by early humans over 100,000 years ago.

Careful cleaning of fragments found at the Neumark-Nord archaeological site in Germany indicates that pond turtle shells were used as small containers or scoop-like implements, news agency SWNS reported.

SCIENTISTS SHATTER TIMELINE OF HUMAN FIRE-MAKING WITH 400,000-YEAR-OLD DISCOVERY IN ENGLAND

An international research team examined pieces of turtle shell — dating back some 125,000 years — discovered at the dig in what is now the Saxony-Anhalt region of Germany.

Using methods including high-resolution 3D scanning, researchers found that many of the 92 fragments bear cut marks on their inner surfaces, indicating that the turtles were carefully butchered by Neanderthals — with limbs detached, internal organs removed and shells thoroughly cleaned.

Study leader professor Sabine Gaudzinski-Windheuser said, "Our data provide the first evidence that Neanderthals hunted and processed turtles north of the Alps, beyond the Mediterranean region."

However, the team believe the turtles were not used as a food source.

Gaudzinski-Windheuser, of the Institute for Ancient Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) in Mainz, said, "We can virtually rule this out, given the abundance of remains [of] large, high-yield prey animals at this site. There was in all likelihood a complete caloric surplus," as SWNS noted.

A total of more than 100,000 animal bones or bone fragments have already been recovered at Neumark-Nord, including numerous bones from deer, cattle and horses, as well as from the largest land mammals of the time — the European straight-tusked elephant, which could weigh more than 10 tons.

The research team reported last year that Neanderthals operated a kind of "factory" at the site, systematically extracting fat from the bones of large mammals.

Gaudzinski-Windheuser said that "pond turtles have a comparatively low nutritional value," weighing roughly 2.2 pounds.

"However, they are relatively easy to catch and may therefore have been hunted by children. Their shells may then have been processed into tools."

She said it was also possible they were hunted for their taste or for an assumed medicinal value — a suggestion supported by findings from studies of later Indigenous peoples.

Archaeologists recently found well-preserved ancient treasures at the bottom of a Swiss lake — and the treasures remain close to where the ship sank.

The shipwreck was found in Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland, some 75 miles southwest of Zurich, by a team of Swiss archaeologists, according to news agency Jam Press.

A team of excavators from the Cantonal Archaeology Office of Neuchâtel (OARC), the Octopus Foundation and the Archaeological Service of the State of Fribourg conducted the search in March 2025, though officials didn't announce the finds until last month.

The cargo, which dates to between 20 and 50 A.D., was once part of a Roman merchant vessel traveling on Lake Neuchâtel.

In antiquity, the area was known as the Roman province of Helvetia.

Pictures from the dive show archaeologists surrounded by ceramic plates, dishes and other debris on the lakebed.

Archaeologists also uncovered amphorae once used to transport olive oil from Hispania, now modern-day Spain.

The objects were grouped close together — indicating that they remained close to where the ship sank.

Archaeologists also found everyday items used by the crew, including tools, harnesses and parts of wagons.

The team also uncovered a sword at the underwater site, which suggests a military escort may have been aboard the ship.

Officials caution that the artifacts are fragile and vulnerable to damage.

In a statement, OARC said the precious artifacts are exposed to lake bed erosion, as well as "the anchoring of pleasure boats… and, above all, acts of vandalism and looting."

Officials said the discovery is unlike anything previously found in the region.

At first glance, the added charge — which will be $8 to $11 per passenger, per the "Simple Flying" aviation blog — does not sound high. But travelers are concerned the fee could herald higher prices for additional airlines as fuel prices continue to skyrocket.

The airline has a clause similar to clauses on some cruise lines — which allows the company to tack on charges based on the cost of oil. Volotea refers to the rule as its "Fair Travel Promise."

It is believed to be one of only a handful of Titanic life jackets still in existence — and the only one ever offered at auction, Cover Media noted.

Auctioneers at Henry Aldridge & Son said the item has generated global interest ahead of the sale, which is scheduled to take place April 18.

Francatelli, who was just 22 at the time, boarded the Titanic in France and was traveling as a secretary to fashion designer Lady Lucy Duff Gordon and her husband, Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon.

She later recalled being told not to worry as she was helped into a life preserver before making her way to the ship’s deck, where lifeboats were being lowered.

The group ultimately boarded Lifeboat No. 1 — which had a capacity of about 40 people but was launched with only 12 on board.

The lifeboat later became the subject of controversy after its occupants did not return to rescue others in the water. Reports at the time also raised questions about payments made by Sir Cosmo to crew members, though the circumstances were widely debated.

The survivors were eventually picked up by the RMS Carpathia, which arrived hours after the Titanic sank and rescued more than 700 passengers.

Francatelli later returned to Britain and married Swiss-born hotel manager Maximilian Haering in 1913.

The couple eventually moved to New York, where they worked in the hospitality industry and operated hotels together.

After her husband’s death, she returned to the United Kingdom — where she spent the remainder of her life until her death in 1967.

The cream-colored life jacket, made of canvas with cork-filled sections, has been displayed at museums in both the United States and Europe.

"There are only a handful of life jackets worn by survivors which still exist today," auctioneer Andrew Aldridge told Cover Media, adding that most are held in museums and are unlikely to be sold.

As Disney ticket prices skyrocket, families are apparently trying creative and — in some cases — highly questionable ways to try to save a buck.

Recently, a father was caught on video at Disneyland in California seemingly trying to smuggle an older child into the park in the back of a stroller.

In a viral video that circulated on TikTok last week, a child can be seen sitting squeezed in the back of a stroller, barely visibile, as the father waits in line to pay the entry fee.

"Disney [is] so expensive they['re] smuggling kids in," the TikTok video is captioned.

The video was taken by a blogger who posted it on his account.

A little girl was seen sitting in front of the stroller, the blogger said — while the older child was pushed up against the stroller's mesh in the back, munching on crackers, according to the post.

Fox News Digital reached out to Disneyland and Disney World for comment. Disney was unable to confirm the incident.

Commenters online quickly erupted — weighing in with a surprising amount of support for the illegal cost-cutting hack.

"Disney doesn't realize how much money they could make by lowering prices," one person wrote.

"Sad. Disney [should] do better and lower the prices so kids can enjoy the park!" another said.

This is not the first time a Mickey enthusiast has tried to smuggle a child into the park with the stroller method.

Over the past few years, several viral incidents have circulated of families apparently trying to smuggle older children into Disney parks by hiding them in strollers, according to the "Inside the Magic" blog.

One incident garnered a lot of attention in 2022 when a TikTok video showed a child being wheeled in a car seat. The child was lifted out once inside the park — and walked on her own once inside the park, numerous outlets reported.

Some travelers believe these incidents may be attempts to bypass ticket costs.

Despite the attention, these incidents appear to be rare in practice, yet they continue to spark strong reactions online.

Disney fans on Reddit strongly disagreed with the praise as voiced on TikTok.

"I understand that prices for gas, parking, hotels are crazy, but if you don't have the money, don't go. The entitlement is astounding!" one Reddit user said after a different incident.

"Agree. If you can’t afford it, then you don’t belong," another said.

In October 2025, Disney raised the prices at both Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California. For the first time, single-day tickets crossed the $200 mark during peak times.

At the time, Disneyland topped out at $224 for a one-day, one-park ticket on its busiest days. At Walt Disney World, that same ticket now runs as high as $209 during peak demand in the 2026 season.

Today, that perk comes at a premium. Disney now offers three tiers of paid Lightning Lane passes, with the priciest option climbing to $449 per person, per day, according to the company's website.

Curators at Library of Congress discover lost film by legendary cinema pioneer after spotting 'subtle clue'

What began as a routine day for Library of Congress librarians turned into a major find when they discovered a lost 1897 film featuring one of cinema's earliest robots.

The film, called "Gugusse and the Automaton," was made by legendary French filmmaker Georges Méliès in 1897.

Méliès was a pioneer of special effects and directed the famous 1902 film "A Trip to the Moon."

The newly discovered film shows a magician battling a mischievous automaton in a brief slapstick sequence.

The Library of Congress described the film as "the first appearance of what might be called a robot."

It was uncovered by librarians who had been examining a collection of deteriorating film reels. They identified the film in September, though officials kept the discovery under wraps until late February.

"It had not been seen by anyone in likely more than a century," the release said.

The curators didn't immediately know what they were looking at, said Jason Evans Groth, a curator of the Moving Image Section at the Library of Congress National Audio-Visual Conservation Center in Culpeper, Virginia.

Groth told Fox News Digital that the team noticed a "subtle clue" in a frame that made them wonder if it was a Méliès film.

"After looking closely at the film on their inspection table, they saw a star painted on one of the props," he said.

"Knowing that Méliès’ film production company was called Star Film, and that he often used that iconography in his movies, they contacted a colleague who is a Méliès expert with a photo of the frame," Groth said.

The colleague responded, "Congratulations! You’ve discovered a lost Méliès!"

Groth added, "They also identified the title for us — which cinema and Méliès historians knew had existed, but which had been lost for decades."

The reel was sent to the Library of Congress by Bill McFarland, a Michigan man whose family had preserved the films for decades, storing them in basements, barns and garages.

Groth described the film as a "copy of a copy of a copy," indicating it had likely been widely duplicated and shared.

"We don’t know exactly how [McFarland's great-grandfather] William DeLyle Frisbee got this one, or if it was one of his favorites, but having a French magic trick film to show to folks in Pennsylvania — especially one with a robot! — must have been something to see," he said.

For those unfamiliar with Méliès' work, Groth said his influence spans from the earliest days of filmmaking to the 2011 Martin Scorsese film "Hugo," in which he is portrayed as a character.

Méliès "made hundreds of movies, and rather than just documenting what he was seeing, he managed to weave imaginative stories into the shorts he created, conjuring atmospheres and moods that were rooted in fantasy, early science fiction and illusion," said Groth.

"He created new worlds and mystified audiences, leaning on narrative storytelling to capture the audience’s minds and imaginations rather than just showing them the world on screen."

Groth noted that a "very large percentage" of early silent films have been lost to history — making the discovery particularly special.

"Luckily, more and more presumed lost films are coming to light," he said.

Ancient ocean mystery deepens as long-misidentified fossil is finally revealed by researchers

More than two decades after scientists identified a fossil as the world's oldest octopus — officials now say it wasn't one at all.

A recent study published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B found that the fossil Pohlsepia mazonensis — a 300-million-year-old sea creature found in the Mazon Creek fossil beds of northeastern Illinois — was closer to a nautilus than an octopus.

Researchers now believe the creature was a relative of the nautilus, which is a shell-covered cephalopod with tentacles.

Cephalopods are a class of marine animals that includes octopuses, squids and cuttlefish, and are known for their tentacles and advanced nervous systems — and for lacking rigid skeletons.

The fossil was identified as the world's oldest octopus in 2000 — but is now considered the oldest soft-tissue nautilus in the world.

University of Reading zoologist Thomas Clements, the lead researcher of the new study, told The Associated Press the fossil is a "very difficult [one] to interpret."

He added, "To look at it, it kind of just looks like a white mush."

"If you look at it, and you are a cephalopod researcher, and you’re interested in everything octopus, it does superficially look a lot like a deep-water octopus."

The determining factor, Clements said, was its teeth — which researchers examined using a synchrotron to peer inside the fossil.

They found that each row had 11 teeth — more than the seven or nine typically found in octopuses.

"This has too many teeth, so it can’t be an octopus," Clements said.

"And that’s how we realized that the world’s oldest octopus is actually a fossil nautilus, not an octopus."

The fossil had the same teeth as a nautiloid called Paleocadmus pohli, an ancient creature found in the same area.

Researchers say the mix-up likely occurred because the creature decomposed and lost its shell before it was fossilized.

The next oldest-known octopus fossil is about 90 million years old — around 210 million years younger than the fossil Pohlsepia mazonensis.

"It’s a huge gap," Clements said, noting it had long raised questions.

"And so that big gap got researchers sort of questioning, ‘Is this thing actually an octopus?'"

The fossil is currently held in the Field Museum in Chicago.

Paul Mayer, who manages the museum's fossil invertebrate collections, said he was "a little surprised" by the new classification, but acknowledged that scientists have questioned the finding for years.

"People have been questioning whether it was an octopus ever since the original paper was first published in 2000," Mayer told the AP.

Discovery at Monticello reveals construction secrets Thomas Jefferson left out of maps and letters

Archaeologists have uncovered a previously unknown remnant of Thomas Jefferson's era at Monticello: a brick kiln used to build his home.

The kiln was recently found on the east side of the Founding Father's home amid an excavation that began in March, officials said.

Monticello historians believe it dates back to the early 1770s — some time before Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

It was part of the construction of Monticello I, the first version of Jefferson's home.

The current structure reflects a later rebuild and expansion completed after his time in France, after 1789.

Photos from the site show researchers working around a rectangular dig at Monticello, exposing evenly spaced brick channels and revealing several bricks stamped with initials.

The kiln was a large, temporary oven used to harden bricks, said Crystal O'Connor, manager of archaeological field research at Monticello.

O’Connor told Fox News Digital that archaeologists found brick channels "filled with overcooked brick rubble, and the soil beneath them had been baked hard by intense heat."

Archaeologists "immediately started hitting brick, and uncovered a series of low parallel brick walls, evenly spaced about a foot and a half apart, with channels running between them," she said.

"While the team and I weren’t sure of what we were looking at initially, that pattern is a telltale sign of a brick kiln," O'Connor added.

Workers once stacked thousands of unfired bricks atop the kiln and kept fires burning for several days until the bricks, eventually used to build Monticello, hardened.

"When the firing was done, workers took the kiln apart and carried the finished bricks to the house," said O'Connor.

She added, "This kiln was crucial to building the home of the author of the Declaration of Independence."

O'Connor noted that it was likely run by George Dudley or William Bishop, two White workmen who were hired by Jefferson — and that it relied heavily on slave labor.

Though Jefferson wasn't making the bricks by hand, the Virginia statesman was certainly aware of the kiln's existence.

"Jefferson knew about this work because he contracted with his brickmakers for a set number of bricks before each major building campaign," O'Connor said.

"He would not have overseen the firings himself. Dudley or Bishop would have managed that process."

O'Connor said records show Jefferson calculated whether hauling finished bricks uphill or producing them on site was more efficient in late 1774.

"We wonder if the brickmakers themselves pointed out the problem of dragging barrels of water and loads of firewood uphill, and if that helped push Jefferson to do the math and move the work downhill, closer to the raw materials," she added.

O'Connor noted that "very few" artifacts were found at the site, other than bricks — but 18th-century remnants were interesting nonetheless.

These included "several bricks shaped in special molds to match the design of the house."

"These are decorative bricks with curved and S-shaped profiles," said O'Connor. "Jefferson used them in the exterior brickwork of the dining room wall, which dates to around 1772."

She added, "They don't appear anywhere else on the house and represent a crazy amount of customization. Finding them in the rubble next to the kiln is what tells us it dates to the early 1770s."

The official stressed the importance of archaeology at Monticello, especially because the kiln was entirely unrecorded in Jefferson's maps, drawings, notes and letters.

"The discovery has already changed how we understand the building of Monticello," she said.

Rick Harrison of 'Pawn Stars' says gambling isn't dying even as Las Vegas poker rooms close one by one

The drop in Las Vegas tourism has been well-documented, with total visitor numbers down 7.5%. At the same time, poker rooms along the Vegas Strip are closing — raising questions about the appeal of in-person gambling.

Rick Harrison of "Pawn Stars" fame — as well as owner of the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas — told Fox News Digital in an interview that gambling in person is not dying.

"We know what the oldest profession is — gambling was probably the second," Harrison said, laughing. "People always gambled — and plus, you know, in Vegas, it's just not [about] the gambling."

Harrison said Las Vegas hosts certain conventions unlike anywhere else in the world, and people are coming to Sin City for more than just gambling.

The latest poker room to close was Resorts World on March 30, a casino representative confirmed to Fox News Digital.

The closure will leave just eight poker rooms open on the Las Vegas Strip, according to the blog "Vital Vegas."

"However, we will be introducing new gaming opportunities to replace the poker room," the representative said.

The representative did not elaborate on what new gaming offerings would take the room’s place. It currently features No Limit Texas Hold’em, Pot Limit Omaha and mixed games.

"You don't have just the whole old style [where you] have blackjack tables, [it’s] dark and everything else like that," said Harrison.

He credited Circa Resort & Casino for changing it up. "You go down to Circa [and] there's go-go dancers dancing behind the blackjack tables. It makes it more fun," he said.

Las Vegas Strip gaming revenue fell 11% year over year, from $840,093,428 in January 2025 to $747,655,527 in January 2026, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB).

Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total gaming win of roughly $1.35 billion in January of this year, dropping 6.55% compared to the same month last year, according to the NGCB.

The online gambling market is expected to reach a projected revenue of $22.2 million by 2030, according to Grand View Research.

Harrison said there's been a shift in Vegas since back in the day.

"The rooms weren't expensive. You had great entertainment. [It] wasn't crazy money. The food wasn't expensive; they made most of their money off the gambling," he said. "Nowadays, younger people don't gamble as much, so you have to change your business model, how you're going to make money," said Harrison.

"In the end, you have to think about the customer experience."

In 2025, there were about 38.5 million visitors, a 7.5% drop from 2024 according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCA).

Robby Starbuck, a conservative activist and the host of "The Robby Starbuck Show," previously told Fox News Digital that in-person gambling is becoming less popular.

"Now nearly everyone under 40 who bets seems to do it online," Starbuck said.

A landmine-sniffing rat who won a gold medal for "life-saving devotion to duty" in Cambodia has been honored with a massive stone statue.

Magawa, a rat who gained fame in the country for sniffing out more than 100 mines (more than 1.5 million square feet) in his five-year career — more than any other rat in the country — retired in 2021 and died at age 8 in 2022.

The African giant pouched rat was trained by the Belgian charity APOPO to use his keen sense of smell to sniff out landmines and other explosives.

In Cambodia, more than 1 million people live and work in areas dotted with landmines, according to BBC News.

'HERO DOG' HONORED FOR COMFORTING COVENANT SCHOOL STUDENTS

In 2020, Magawa received the PDSA Dickin medal for gallantry, which recognizes heroism in animals.

He was the first rat in the organization’s history going back to 1943 to win the award.

Magawa was able to walk over areas with land mines safely because of his light weight and would alert his handlers to a mine by scratching the surface, according to Smithsonian magazine. He would then receive a treat.

"During his career, Magawa found over 100 landmines and other explosives, making him APOPO’s most successful HeroRAT to date," the organization said in 2022, while announcing his death. "His contribution allows communities in Cambodia to live, work and play without fear of losing life or limb."

Cambodia has the highest rate of landmine amputees per capita of any country.
