Italy rules out replacing Iran in World Cup: 'Qualification is done on the pitch'

As much as Italy would like to be in this year’s World Cup, it won’t come at Iran’s expense.

An envoy for President Donald Trump reportedly asked FIFA to replace Iran with Italy in North America this summer. However, Italian sports officials shot down that idea, saying it was "not appropriate."

"First of all, it’s not possible. Secondly, it’s not a good idea," Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi said Thursday.

"Qualification is done on the pitch."

Luciano Buonfiglio, the president of the Italian Olympic Committee, which oversees all sports in Italy, also dismissed the idea of taking Iran's place.

"I would feel offended," Buonfiglio said. "You need to deserve to go to the World Cup."

Italian Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti called the idea "shameful."

While Iran was among the first teams to qualify for the World Cup, Italy missed out for the third consecutive tournament, resulting in the resignations of its national team coach and soccer federation president.

The Financial Times reported the plan for Trump's envoy to get Iran replaced is an effort to repair the relationship between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, which soured after the former’s comments against Pope Leo XIV regarding the war with Iran.

Trump wrote in a Truth Social post last month that Iran would be welcome to compete in the World Cup as scheduled, though it might not be "appropriate" considering the ongoing conflict.

Iran has not withdrawn from the World Cup — the team is preparing to play in the U.S. despite the war in the Middle East — and FIFA has insisted its group stage games near Los Angeles and Seattle go ahead as planned in June.

FIFA has consistently said Iran will stick to the World Cup schedule from December and refused to negotiate any suggestion of moving the team’s games to co-host Mexico.

Trump envoy asks FIFA to replace Iran with Italy in 2026 World Cup: report

An envoy for President Donald Trump has reportedly asked FIFA to replace Iran with Italy in the 2026 World Cup this summer.

The Financial Times reported the plan is an effort to repair the relationship between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, which soured after the former’s comments against Pope Leo XIV regarding the war with Iran.

United States special envoy Paolo Zampolli suggested the idea to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

"I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup. I’m an Italian native, and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a U.S.-hosted tournament," Zampolli told the outlet. "With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion."

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment by Fox News Digital.

Italy had a chance to be in the World Cup already, but it lost in a penalty shootout to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a qualifying playoff final.

Italy became the first World Cup-winning team to miss three consecutive tournaments after the 4-1 penalty shootout loss earlier this month.

"We still don’t believe it that we’re out and that it happened in this manner," Italy’s Leonardo Spinazzola told reporters at the time, according to the New York Post.

"It’s upsetting for everyone. For us, for our families and for all the kids who have never seen Italy at a World Cup."

While Zampolli told Infantino about his proposed plan, FIFA’s president said Iran "for sure" will play in the World Cup despite the conflict involving the U.S.

"The Iranian team is coming, for sure," Infantino said during the CNBC Invest in America Forum earlier this month in Washington, D.C.

"We hope that, by then, of course, the situation will be a peaceful situation. That would definitely help. But Iran has to come, of course. They represent their people. They have qualified. The players want to play."

Infantino visited the Iranian national team in Turkey, which is where it has its training camp.

All three of Iran’s group stage games are scheduled to be played in the U.S. That remains the case after Iranian government officials suggested to FIFA that their games be moved to Mexico because they could not travel to the U.S.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed FIFA’s rejection of Iran’s request, and it is insisting Iran play where it's scheduled — SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, and Lumen Field in Seattle. Iran said earlier this month it would only decide on its team’s participation once it heard from FIFA regarding its relocation request.

Iran is scheduled to play at SoFi Stadium against New Zealand June 16 to begin its tournament. It will also play Belgium at the stadium before finishing group play against Mo Salah and Egypt in Seattle June 26.

Trump wrote in a Truth Social post last month that Iran would be welcome to compete in the World Cup as scheduled, though it might not be "appropriate" considering the conflict.

"The Iran National Soccer Team is welcome to The World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety," he wrote.

Trump also told Politico, "I really don’t care," when asked about Iran’s participation in the tournament. Infantino, who has a strong relationship with Trump, said Trump has "reiterated" to him that the U.S. welcomes Iran’s team to compete.

Powerful illegal streaming ringleader jailed, fined millions over global operation

A Rolex-wearing, sports car-driving illegal streaming ringleader has been fined millions and sentenced to 23 months in prison following an eight-year investigation into his operation.

The man nicknamed "Dash, the Iranian," operated primarily out of Spain and provided thousands of pirated sports and entertainment sites to two million people from domains including RapidIPTV and IPTVStack. According to The Athletic, the investigation into "Dash" and the operation spanned from 2015 to 2020, during which the illegal streaming service was estimated to have earned over $17 million in revenue.

The illegal streaming business’s technical branch was partly based in Iran and operated by capturing legitimate streams of events, decoding them and then sharing them across complex networks and servers located in 10 countries. The real kicker of the situation is that the company was set up as a franchise, which would then allow resellers to run the services and turn a profit.

The ringleader was ultimately fined $10.2 million during his sentencing in Spain’s Criminal Chamber of the National Court. ‘Dash,’ plus four other defendants, opened financial accounts to launder profits through real estate projects and cryptocurrency transactions involving over 1,000 bitcoin. All five defendants involved accepted their charges in exchange for reduced sentences.

The illegal streaming services tapped into Premier League and Champions League matches, which many legal streams can only be found behind paywalls in many areas around the world, and it’s fair to say they earned ‘Dash’ and his affiliates quite a bit of cash.

According to the report, the initial raid of "Dash’s" $2 million residence in Barcelona took place in June 2020. Four Rolex watches, two AMG Mercedes cars, laptops and stacks of cash found underneath mattresses were retrieved.

Those who partook in the illegal streaming services to watch events are officially out of luck. On the other side of that coin, the president of Spain’s La Liga, Javier Tebas, is ecstatic about the illegal business being shut down.

Trump warns US 'won't have much of an Olympic team anymore' without new college sports regulations

President Donald Trump warned that the U.S. "won't have an Olympic team anymore," if not for regulation on the NCAA to address dwindling resources for certain non-revenue college sports in the U.S.

Trump gave the warning at a White House ceremony honoring several recent NCAA champions in non-revenue sports.

"75% of Olympians competing for Team USA played as college athletes. If we don't straighten out this, we're not going to have much of an Olympic team because you have so many of these sports, especially certain sports where it's like the minor leagues — you could call it the major leagues; you could call it whatever you want — but we train unbelievable athletes to go in and win the gold medal," Trump said Tuesday.

"Without college sports, without your ability to go into college sports and compete and learn really how to play and get better, we're not going to have much of an Olympic team anymore."

Approximately 75% of U.S. Olympians have a collegiate background, competing in NCAA, NAIA, or junior college programs, per the NCAA. For the 2024 Paris Olympics, 65% of the U.S. roster consisted of current or former NCAA student-athletes. Key sports with high collegiate representation include swimming (96%), rowing (95%), and track and field.

Trump made the comments while honoring the NCAA champion Youngstown State bowling, Oklahoma State men’s golf, Texas A&M women’s volleyball, Wake Forest men’s tennis, Georgia women’s tennis, West Virginia mixed rifle and Florida State women’s soccer teams.

Trump even made a rare admission of a skill he is not so good at during the White House ceremony.

Trump, while honoring the Youngstown State bowling champions, confessed that he's not a great bowler.

"It's not easy bowling. I've tried it. It doesn't work too well for me. It's very difficult, actually. It's very difficult," Trump said.

The ceremony gave a spotlight to the nonrevenue college sports that Trump seeks to preserve with his recent executive order, titled "Urgent National Action to Save College Sports."

Since NIL payments were legalized for college athlete in 2021, new business methods employed by universities to stay competitive in revenue sports has introduced significant financial strain on non-revenue college sports like swimming, tennis, track, often forcing universities to cut programs due to budget reallocation toward football and basketball.

Trump has taken executive action to mandate that revenue-sharing models implemented by universities must preserve or expand scholarships and opportunities for women’s and Olympic sports, dating back to last year with a similar executive order.

Last July, Trump signed an executive order, "Saving College Sports," aimed at stabilizing NCAA athletics amid rising NIL costs. The order aimed to protect Olympic and women’s sports from funding cuts by curbing "pay-for-play" schemes and ensuring revenue-sharing models preserve, rather than eliminate, non-revenue sports opportunities.

Tuesday's ceremony came in the same afternoon that Trump extended the ongoing ceasefire with Iran.

"Based on the fact that the government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so, and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our attack on the country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal," Trump said in a post shared on Truth Social.

"I have therefore directed our military to continue the blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted and discussions are concluded, one way or the other."

Chuck Schumer calls on FIFA to cover $150 NJ Transit fares for World Cup fans heading to MetLife Stadium

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has called for FIFA to cover the full rail cost for New Yorkers attending the World Cup, as NJ Transit train ticket prices are set for $150 to get to MetLife Stadium for matches.

Schumer released a statement on Sunday, calling on FIFA to pay the full fair, which is astronomically higher than the regular cost to travel from Penn Station to the Meadowlands, while understanding that "FIFA is set to rake in approximately $11 billion in revenue off the tournament while New York fans are being hit with $150 NJ Transit round-trip tickets to get to the game."

MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, will host eight matches during the World Cup, including the final on July 19. The usual price is $12.90 for the Meadowlands train from Penn Station, but it will rise to $150 beginning June 13 and ending July 19. There will also be shuttles available worth $80.

NJ Transit CEO Kirs Kolluri defended the fare hikes on Friday, saying the ultimate cost to the company shouldn’t burden New Jersey commuters.

"It is an exciting moment for New Jersey to showcase New Jersey's diversity as well as its economic standing in the country and in the world. Equally important, (Gov. Mikie Sherrill) has said that New Jersey commuters cannot and will not subsidize the movement of fans going to the game, because that would not be fair," Kolluri said, reiterating that the tournament will cost NJ Transit $48 million.

Penn Station is also scheduled to be partially closed for up to four hours before each World Cup match, which will obviously disrupt regular commuters and travelers eight times during the tournament.

NEW JERSEY GOV MIKIE SHERRILL RIPS FIFA AFTER REPORTS THAT NJ TRANSIT TICKETS TO WORLD CUP WILL BE OVER $100

Schumer argues it’s unfair for New Yorkers to have to deal with the price hike, especially considering FIFA is eliminating parking at MetLife Stadium. Also, parking at nearby American Dream mall is approximately $225, while walking access is being prohibited as well.

In turn, mass transit is "effectively the only way in or out of the stadium on match days," Schumer’s statement read. But Schumer isn’t lambasting NJ Transit — he understands the financials the company has to deal with.

It’s FIFA he’s pointing the finger at for not helping with the cost.

"The total NJ Transit operation to move fans to and from MetLife is projected to cost $62 million, with approximately $11 million dedicated to security alone. The federal government is contributing $10.6 million and the NY/NJ Host Committee is contributing just over $3 million, leaving NJ Transit to foot a $48 million bill with zero financial contribution from FIFA.

"Meanwhile, FIFA has told other host cities they can offer fans mass rail for as little as $2.50 round trip, a fraction of what New York fans are being charged."

Schumer added that, "Charging more than eleven times the normal fare for a train ride is a ripoff, plain and simple."

FIFA’s budgeted revenue for the 2023 to 2026 cycle is approximately $11 billion, which marks a 71% increase over the previous cycle. It also marks the most lucrative World Cup in the tournament’s history.

Schumer’s statement also pointed out ticket prices for match-goers are around $700 for the group stage, and the final at MetLife Stadium is as high as $10,000 to get into the door under FIFA’s dynamic pricing model.

"We are carrying more fans, more riders, and more disruption than any other region in this tournament," Schumer added. "FIFA needs to step up accordingly. Past practice does not cut it when you are eliminating parking, shutting down Penn Station, and forcing every fan onto one transit system. FIFA should cover the ride, not stick New York fans with the bill."

FIFA may not have historically contributed to public transportation costs in previous tournaments, but Schumer argues New York and New Jersey isn’t every other host region. It’s the most densely populated area in the country, and it will be host to eight matches.

Kolluri also noted that, if the regular $12.90 fare were to stay in place, the $48 million bill for NJ Transit would be subsidized for commuters by 92%.

"No one that I have spoken to thinks that's fair or reasonable. Commuters in New Jersey should not carry the cost years into the future for a wonderful event, no doubt. But the fans going to the games should burden the cost. That's all we're trying to say," Kolluri said.

With the plan now officially in place, FIFA World Cup COO Heimo Schirgi issued the following statement to Fox News Digital:

"Ever since the host city agreements were signed in 2018, FIFA has worked in collaboration with the Host Committees and their partners to develop a transportation plan that provides efficient and accessible mass transit options for ticketed fans attending the eight matches at NY NJ Stadium. The goal is to minimize congestion, reduce reliance on private vehicles, and ensure the fan experience is positive and memorable, defined by the action on pitch, not delays on the roads.

"The NJ Transit current pricing model will have a chilling effect. Elevated fares inevitably push fans toward alternative transportation options. This increases concerns of congestion, late arrivals, and creates broader ripple effects that ultimately diminish the economic benefit and lasting legacy the entire region stands to gain from hosting the World Cup."

WNBA legend Sue Bird and former U.S. women's soccer star Megan Rapinoe announced they have broken up after 10 years.

The couple, who got engaged in 2020 but never married, delivered the stunning news in a statement on social media on Friday.

"There really is no smooth or easy way to share this news. After a lot of thought, we’ve made the decision to separate as a couple," their joint statement read.

Bird already has her own podcast, "Bird's Eye View," that she said will be continuing. Rapinoe said she will be launching her own podcast later in the summer. They launched the podcast in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pair met during the 2016 Rio Olympics, with Rapinoe playing with the U.S. women's soccer team and Bird playing for the U.S. women's basketball team at the time. They went public with their relationship in 2017.

Bird retired from the WNBA in the 2022 season following a 21-year career. Rapinoe retired from the U.S. women's national soccer team in 2023.

FIFA Host Committee, NJ Transit say plan for World Cup at MetLife Stadium will be a success amid $150 trains

Fans may have to pay $150 to travel to World Cup games at MetLife Stadium this summer, but FIFA believes NJ Transit's Regional Stadium Mobility Plan will be a success.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 New York New Jersey Host Committee and NJ Transit announced the plan Friday with the price of getting to MetLife Stadium the hottest topic along with bans on parking at the stadium.

But Alex Lasry, the CEO of the Host Committee, said the plan is "built with safety and responsibility at its core."

"(We are) ensuring that every fan, worker and resident can move throughout the region securely during the tournament," Lasry said in a release.

"It reflects years of planning and coordination across our transportation partners, and we’re incredibly grateful for their collaboration.

"Our focus is on delivering a clear, reliable experience for matchgoers while minimizing disruption and helping residents navigate the increased demand the tournament will bring. We want to ensure the World Cup is an enjoyable experience across our entire region, while showing the world everything New York New Jersey has to offer."

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill and FIFA exchanged blows about the ticket prices, with Sherrill imploring FIFA to pay for fans to attend the games.

"Our administration inherited an agreement where FIFA is providing $0 for transportation to the World Cup — zero. That leaves New Jersey Transit with a $48 million bill to safely get 40,000 fans to and from every game," Sherrill said in a video.

"At the same time, FIFA is making $11 billion off of this World Cup and charging fans up to $10,000 for a single ticket for the final.

FIFA said it was "quite surprised" at Sherrill's unprecedented "approach."

"FIFA World Cup will bring millions of fans to North America along with related economic impact," FIFA said. "Many fans will travel to NYNJ to enjoy the eight matches scheduled. FIFA is not aware of any other major event previously held at NYNJ Stadium, including other major sports, global concert tours, etc., where organizers were required to pay for fan transportation."

The first game played at MetLife Stadium will be June 13, and it will host eight matches, including the July 19 final.

Under the section "What Fans Should Expect" in its release, NJ Transit and the Host Committee said "travel will look different from a typical day," and those not attending games should avoid nonessential travel on match days.

Some won't have a choice because service out of New York Penn Station to New Jersey will be halted on match days beginning four hours before game time.

The World Cup begins June 12 in Los Angeles on FOX.

Iranian women's soccer players granted asylum in Australia say they dream of continuing careers 'in safety'

The two Iranian women’s soccer players who remained in Australia amid the U.S. and Israel’s joint military campaign against Iran have spoken out publicly for the first time since accepting asylum, saying they intend to continue their professional careers "in safety" there.

Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh released a joint statement thanking the Australian government for its support and providing them with "safe haven."

"The compassion and support shown to us during this challenging time has provided us with hope for a future where we can live and compete in safety," the statement read, via the Australian Associated Press.

"We are overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity of the Iranian diaspora community in Australia. Your support has made us feel welcome and less alone as we navigate this transition," the statement continued. "We are elite athletes, and it remains our dream to continue our sporting careers here in Australia."

The situation involving the Iranian women’s soccer team began after the squad arrived in Australia for the Women’s Asian Cup in February. The team was already there when the U.S. launched a joint military operation with Israel against Iran.

In the team’s opening match against South Korea, the squad stood silent during the national anthem as Iranian head coach Marziyeh Jafari, also silent, smiled at her team. The silence was interpreted by some as an act of resistance. But in the following match against Australia and the subsequent match that led to their elimination, the team sang along and saluted during the national anthem.

Concern for the team after the tournament prompted the Australian Iranian Council to launch an online petition urging Australian authorities to "ensure that no member of Iran’s women’s national football team is to depart Australia while credible fears for their safety remain."

Seven women initially accepted the asylum offer before five changed their minds and said they would return to Iran.

Pasandideh and Ramezanisadeh said in their statement that they "are not yet ready to speak publicly" about their experiences.

"We respectfully ask the media for privacy and space at this time. We will not be making any further comments or conducting interviews in the immediate future."

Manninger was not immediately identified by law enforcement, but a number of his former teams released statements on social media confirming the news of his tragic passing.

Police told The Associated Press of a fatal "traffic accident involving a local train and a car" at a railroad crossing early Thursday morning.

"Upon arrival, emergency responders found that the car’s driver, a 48-year-old man from Salzburg, had already been freed from the vehicle by first responders and was undergoing CPR. Police assisted with resuscitation efforts, including the use of a defibrillator. Despite further efforts by paramedics and an emergency physician, resuscitation was unsuccessful. The man from Salzburg succumbed to his injuries."

The details of what led to the fatal wreck were not immediately known, but police said the car was struck and dragged by a train. There were no additional injuries reported.

FIFA fires back at New Jersey Gov Mikie Sherrill over demand to pay for World Cup transit tickets

FIFA responded strongly to New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill after she posted a critical video saying that FIFA should pay for fans' NJ Transit tickets to World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium this summer.

In her video response to "headlines" about reports of $100 train tickets, Sherrill said FIFA "should pay for the rides" since NJ Transit is getting billed $48 million, while FIFA will make $11 billion.

FIFA said it was "quite surprised" by Sherrill's "approach ... on fan transportation" before outlining "Host City Agreements."

"The original FIFA World Cup 2026 Host City Agreements signed in 2018 required free transportation for fans to all matches," the statement began.

"Recognizing the financial strain this placed on the host cities, back in 2023 FIFA adjusted the Host Agreement requirements across all host cities as follows: All Match Ticket holders and accredited individuals shall be able to access transport (public or additionally planned transport) at cost to allow travel to Stadiums on match days.

"FIFA worked for years with host cities on transportation and mobility plans, including advocating for millions of dollars in federal funding to support host cities for transportation.

"FIFA World Cup will bring millions of fans to North America along with related economic impact. Many fans will travel to NYNJ to enjoy the eight matches scheduled. FIFA is not aware of any other major event previously held at NYNJ Stadium, including other major sports, global concert tours, etc., where organizers were required to pay for fan transportation."

Current prices from East Rutherford to Penn Station are just under $13.

Last week, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority announced $80 tickets from Boston to Gillette Stadium, and the Boston Host Committee announced Tuesday that there will be $95 Yankee Line bus tickets to Foxborough.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said Wednesday that Iran "for sure" will play in the World Cup this summer despite the ongoing war involving the United States.

The conflict in the Middle East begged the question whether Iran, which qualified for the World Cup that begins in June in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, would still participate given the circumstances.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed FIFA’s rejection of Iran’s request, and it is insisting Iran play where its scheduled — SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, and Lumen Field in Seattle.

According to Infantino, Iran is going along with the original schedule.

Iran is scheduled to play at SoFi Stadium against New Zealand on June 16 to begin its tournament. It will also play Belgium at the stadium before finishing group play against Mo Salah and Egypt in Seattle June 26.

FIFA confirms tailgating bans may be put in place at some US World Cup venues

In just over two months, soccer fans will descend on stadiums across North America for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. But those thousands of fans won’t get to take part in a long-running pregame tradition — at least at the venues located in the U.S.

Pregame tailgating at some U.S. stadiums will be prohibited during the tournament, according to multiple reports Tuesday. NFL venues such as Arrowhead Stadium, Gillette Stadium and Lincoln Financial Field, among others, were listed as host sites where fans will not be allowed to tailgate this summer.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, a spokesperson clarified that while FIFA does not have a universal policy banning tailgating, it noted that restrictions could still be put in place at specific venues based on decisions made by host cities.

"FIFA does not have a formal policy that restricts tailgating (eating and drinking around parked cars in stadium areas). However, site-specific restrictions may be imposed in alignment with host city public safety authorities in certain venues based on local regulations. Additional fan information for all FIFA World Cup 2026 matches will be communicated in advance of the tournament."

Gillette Stadium, the home of the New England Patriots, has banned tailgating, according to the stadium's official match day checklist.

"No Tailgating: Please note that the traditional ‘tailgating’(eating and drinking around parked cars) is not permitted for these events," the website reads. "Open Containers: In Massachusetts, it is illegal to possess or drink from open containers of alcohol in public spaces." .

Tailgating has long been synonymous with American sports culture, giving fans a budget-friendly way to enjoy the game-day atmosphere.

Fans attending matches at MetLife Stadium in the New York area will not be able to park in the stadium’s usual gameday lots – another measure that will prevent tailgating as well.

Public transportation is expected to be the primary alternative, though travelers may face higher fares to cross state lines. New Jersey Transit could charge more than $100 for round-trip service to MetLife Stadium during games, The Athletic reported.

As if World Cup tickets weren't costly enough, getting to those games is slated to cost plenty more than usual.

NJ Transit tickets from MetLife Stadium to New York Penn Station after matches are reportedly set to cost more than $100, while prices in Boston are also set to surge.

Currently, prices from East Rutherford to Penn Station are just under $13.

The Athletic also reported that there will be no price differences for seniors, children or passengers with disabilities, and a final decision on the pricing is expected in the next few days.

New Jersey lawmakers have proposed a bill that would impose "surcharges on certain transactions to support preparations for [the] hosting of special events," according to the N.J. Legislature. The bill's primary sponsor is Sen. Paul Sarlo, D-N.J.

If passed, a 3% sales tax would be added to retail goods, food and drink, and event tickets in the Meadowlands District during the dates of the World Cup, according to the bill’s text.

A hotel surcharge will also be imposed — tacking 2.5% onto bills at hotels booked during the period of June 12 through July 21.

The USMNT has not had much success in the World Cup. The squad reached the Round of 16 in 2010 and 2014 but failed to qualify for the tournament in 2018. It returned to the Round of 16 four years ago but couldn’t advance out of the Copa América group stage on home soil last year.

After finishing in third place in the inaugural World Cup in 1930, the furthest they have made it since then is the 2002 quarterfinals.

The U.S. is the highest-ranked team in its group this summer, joining Australia (26th), Paraguay (39th) and a team to be determined in a playoff.

It appears that soccer star Christian Pulisic and his girlfriend, golfer Alexa Melton, have broken up, and the split seems quite ugly.

Late last year, the star striker, who is captain of the U.S. Men's National Team, had to shut down rumors he was dating Sydney Sweeney, but apparently, not everything can be fixed.

In fact, Melton appeared to hint that Pulisic wasn't exactly faithful before walking back the claim.

"Mans was on Raya before it even ended," Melton said in an Instagram comment, according to the New York Post. Raya is a subscription celebrity dating app.

"How many likes to post his Raya profile," Melton said in another comment, the outlet noted.

However, Melton appeared to backtrack just a bit.

"I’ve made some comments on a private matter and it’s been taken out of context. I received false info. He is not a cheater. Any narrative beyond that is not mine," Melton said in a recent Instagram Story. "Out of respect for Christian’s and my privacy, I will not speak further regarding this matter."

It will be Pulisic’s second appearance in the World Cup, having also played in 2022 in Qatar. That team advanced to the knockout stage but was eliminated by the Netherlands, who lost to eventual champion Argentina in the round of 16.

After some fans allegedly directed anti-Muslim chants during last Tuesday’s international soccer friendly between Spain’s national team and Egypt, FIFA confirmed it had opened disciplinary proceedings.

In a statement, the sport’s governing body said the action was taken against Spain’s federation following the incident.

"FIFA has today initiated disciplinary proceedings against the Spanish Football Federation for incidents that occurred during the friendly match against Egypt."

RCDE Stadium in Catalonia, Spain, hosted the March 31 match, with Spain as the home team. Fans in sections of the 40,000-seat stadium — a potential future World Cup site — were possibly heard chanting, "bote, bote, bote musulman el que no bote," which translates to "jump, jump, jump, whoever doesn’t jump is a Muslim." The chant resurfaced several times during the match.

The stadium announcer issued a warning to fans about the venue's policy against discriminatory behavior following reports of anti-Muslim chants.

Egypt is overwhelming a Muslim nation. According to the World Religion Database, approximately 90% of the country's population identifies as Muslim.

"Football is to enjoy and support, not to offend people by who they are or what they believe in," Yamal's post concluded.

Criticism came swiftly, with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) denouncing the behavior before full time and Joan Garcia and Pedri echoing that stance after the match.

"The RFEF stands against racism in football and condemns any act of violence inside stadiums," the governing body of the sport in Spain wrote in a statement posted to social media last Tuesday.

The response extended beyond the pitch, with Spain’s minister of education, vocational training and sport and the Council on American-Islamic Relations also condemning the chants.

Spain's coach Luis de la Fuente also condemned the messaging. "I am repulsed by and absolutely reject any form of xenophobia or racism — it’s completely intolerable," he said at a news conference.

Striker Patrick Agyemang, who has six goals in 14 appearances for the USMNT, ruptured his Achilles on Monday and has been ruled out for the tournament.

Agyemang was carried off on a stretcher while playing for Derby in the English second-tier, one tier below the Premier League. He was visibly emotional as he was taken off with his right leg strapped.

The 25-year-old first represented the Stars and Stripes last year for training camp and friendlies against Venezuela and Costa Rica, scoring in both contests. He made the CONCACAF Gold Cup team last summer, where the United States lost to Mexico in the final.

Agyemang recently suited up for the United States last week against Belgium and Portugal, scoring against the former on March 28.

Team USA, one of three host countries, drew a favorable group back in December, as Paraguay, Australia and either one of the four teams in UEFA Path C, which includes Turkey, Slovakia, Kosovo and Romania, stand in their way ahead of the knockout stage. One dead and dozens injured during pregame event at Peru soccer stadium

At least one person is dead, and 60 others were injured at the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium Friday in Lima, Peru, authorities reported.

There seemed to be a crush of fans, and police said officers rescued people who were trapped as a result of the influx of fans in the south stands right before Alianza Lima played its biggest rival, Universitario, Saturday.

Fans attended a pregame "flag-waving event" at the stadium.

"We deeply regret the passing of our fan, Freddy Rony Cornetero Cueva. One of our own has left us, one of those who feel these colors in their soul. We accompany his family and loved ones with all our hearts," Alianza Lima said in a statement on X Saturday, which was translated to English.

The Ministry of Health initially reported the collapse of a wall inside the stadium, but both the team and the police denied that in separate statements. Fire Brigadier Marcos Pajuelo said dozens of injured people were taken to hospitals.

Italy made heartbreaking history on Tuesday night, as they missed their third straight World Cup bid following a loss to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Italy is now the first World Cup-winning team to miss three consecutive tournaments following the penalty-kick shootout loss in the European playoffs.

The nation was once a soccer powerhouse, winning it all four times with its most recent in 2006. But recent years have not been kind to the Italian squad, and they were feeling the pain of the loss after the match.

"We still don’t believe it – that we’re out and that it happened in this manner," Italy’s Leonardo Spinazzola said to reporters, per the New York Post. "It’s upsetting for everyone. For us, for our families and for all the kids who have never seen Italy at a World Cup."

After 90 minutes and extra time, both nations were stuck in a 1-1 tie, and the penalty shootout was needed to determine a winner. Italy eventually fell to Bosnia-Herzegovina, 4-1, in the shootout, as Esmir Bajraktarevic secured the victory with the final goal.

The clock is ticking: DHS shutdown endangers FIFA World Cup security preparations

In less than three months, the United States will welcome the world for the largest sporting event in the history of mankind: the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Our nation will be hosting 78 matches across 11 U.S. host cities in a 40-day period during America’s 250th birthday. This showcase of American exceptionalism is projected to bring in more than 5 million visitors and produce $30 billion in economic output.

And yet, President Donald Trump’s White House Task Force on the FIFA World Cup 2026 is being stifled in ensuring the safety and security of the event because a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown is limiting DHS’s ability to prepare for this unprecedented global tournament.

When Congress failed to fund DHS more than a month ago, critical agencies such as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the United States Coast Guard (USCG) were forced to operate with limited resources and unpaid staff and suspend certain operations.

Each of these agencies, as well as all 23 components housed within DHS, are vitally important to the White House FIFA Task Force’s whole-of-government approach to protect U.S. citizens and international visitors alike.

As of today, nearly 95% of TSA employees are working without pay, and the financial strain is causing callout rates to double nationwide, with more than 450 officers quitting since the shutdown began.

With fewer officers showing up, TSA has had to consolidate or reduce the number of checkpoints at some airports, creating significantly longer lines for all passengers. Each officer must screen more travelers, increasing the risk of missed threats. At John F. Kennedy International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, callout rates have reached 40%. It is even worse at William P. Hobby Airport in Houston (55%).

Now imagine that scenario happening during the busiest travel season in American history — where each of those metropolitan areas will be hosting World Cup games this summer.

In addition, plans for new checkpoint screening technology upgrades at World Cup gateway airports risk being delayed or canceled with a prolonged shutdown. World Cup-specific staffing, canine deployments and coordination with airport and law enforcement partners are all falling victim to travel restrictions, approval delays and canceled training sessions.

TSA’s Federal Air Marshal Service’s efforts to assess vulnerabilities and deploy Counter-UAS (unmanned aircraft system) capabilities at transportation venues are also at risk. A prolonged shutdown delays or cancels planned security assessments, procurement of C-UAS systems and training on new equipment, which directly affect our ability to detect and mitigate drone threats around key transportation hubs.

If Congress does not act, we risk missing threats at our most bustling airports, just as fans from every corner of the globe arrive.

The majority of DHS training and exercises for first responders and cybersecurity are on hold, limiting our ability to prepare for physical and cyber threats during the World Cup. Furloughs and reduced staffing impact DHS’ ability to conduct security assessments, compromise our intelligence posture and hinder collaboration with our partners during this critical planning phase.

The Coast Guard is scheduled to protect America’s harbors and waterways during the World Cup. With nearly 75% of its specialized civilian workforce furloughed and no money for contracts or training, the Coast Guard faces skill gaps and a risk of mission failure. The Coast Guard must mobilize about 1,000 security forces and support personnel for World Cup events, but without funding, they cannot pay for equipment or conduct advanced training.

The longer DHS is forced to operate without funding, the increased likelihood that America’s security and the tournament’s success are at risk. Partisan politics are jeopardizing the safety of our communities and the success of this historic event.

It does not have to be this way. The bottom line is this: Congress must act now. End the shutdown. Restore DHS funding. Give DHS the necessary resources to deliver a safe, secure and unforgettable World Cup. The clock is ticking. The world will be watching. Congress owes it to the American people to ensure that the World Cup kickstarts the beginning of The Golden Age of America in stunning — and safe — fashion.

US soccer legend Landon Donovan talks team's World Cup chances, recalls honor of representing country

The United States will be one of the three hosts for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the men’s team hopes it will lead to an easier path out of the group stage this time around.

Team USA will go up against Paraguay, Australia and either one of the four teams in UEFA Path C, which includes Turkey, Slovakia, Kosovo and Romania.

U.S. soccer legend Landon Donovan told Fox News Digital that he expected the Americans to easily make it out of the group stage and into the knockout round.

"The assumption for all of us is that we will get out of the group stage, and, in fact, I think we should win our group. I think that is a realistic target for this team," Donovan said. "This team has the capability to beat any team in the world. I really mean that. It doesn’t mean we’re going to be better than every team we play in the World Cup, but we have the ability to beat every team. The challenge so far is that this team has not shown that they can do that yet, but we all know they are capable."

Donovan, whose book "Landon: A Memoir" is set to be released this week, said the U.S. will have key friendlies against top teams that should show just how far the team has come since the last World Cup.

Belgium, Portugal, Senegal and Germany are all set on the U.S. schedule before the Americans play Paraguay on June 12 to begin the World Cup.

"The beauty of having a World Cup at home is that when you get momentum, it gets exponentially more every step you go," Donovan added. "So, if you get out of the group and win the group, now the whole country is behind you. I’ve seen it every World Cup since 2002. You win the next game, and you win the next game, next thing you know, you might find yourself in a quarterfinal or semifinal and then anything can happen."

The U.S. World Cup roster will likely feature names the average soccer fan has already heard of – Christian Pulisic, Tim Ream, Weston McKennie and Matt Turner.

Donovan said fans should keep a closer eye on McKennie this time around. McKennie is in his sixth season with Serie A’s Juventus. He has four goals and four assists in 29 matches this season.

"The player playing better than anybody right now for their club team on our national team is Weston McKennie," Donovan said. "He plays for Juventus in Italy and he has literally been their best player for 15 games in a row – and that’s a top five team in that country. That’s a big league. So, I think if Weston continues that form into the World Cup, he could absolutely explode onto the scene here and really make a name for himself."

Donovan made 157 appearances for the U.S. men’s soccer team, only seven appearances short of Cobi Jones for the most all-time. He’s tied for first with Clint Dempsey for 57 goals on the national team as well.

He recalled to Fox News Digital what playing for Team USA meant to him.

"Everything," he said simply. "I grew up a huge sports fan, and, so for me, I couldn’t watch soccer on TV because we didn’t have cable TV. We were too poor to afford that. But I would watch the Olympics and I loved watching people in obscure sports represent their country and especially the people representing our country. And I just love that about sports. There’s nothing, I mean, outside of military duty, which is a whole different category, there’s nothing that compares to that.

"I always compare national team games to college football. Like the rivalry people feel and the pride they feel, but you throw national pride on top of that and you just can’t compare it to anything else. The pride as a player, when you have a crest and you see the flag come out and you hear the national anthem and you realize what you are playing for, is incomparable."

Megan Rapinoe praises Iranian women's soccer team's 'bravery' after facing criticism

Former U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe spoke out in support of the Iranian women’s soccer team amid the players’ trials and tribulations over the last few weeks while competing in Australia.

The Iranian women’s soccer team was in Australia earlier this month to compete in the Women’s Asian Cup. Players were seen refusing to sing their country’s national anthem as the U.S. and Israel launched a joint military campaign on the Iranian regime. The players were dubbed "wartime traitors" by an Iranian broadcaster for their decisions during the tournament.

Australian officials then raced to try to get the players asylum in the country. At least two players stayed in Australia while the rest of the team made it back to Iran.

Rapinoe praised the "bravery and courage" of the women.

"I’m just thinking about this in the context of, like, the immense pressure that these young adults and these young women are under to make a decision like this," she said on the "A Touch More" podcast. "Like, the incredible courage and bravery it would take knowing what that could potentially mean for their family back home. The bravery and courage to protest the national anthem, basically in protest of the Iranian regime and not singing the national anthem during a match. The stress and uncertainty they’re facing – their family, their loved ones. What does that all mean for back home?

"I, of course, fully support their decisions to seek asylum and seek a better life and to try to escape an incredibly oppressive regime in that situation. I don’t know what’s going on with them and why some of them left and however that is. I hope the ones that returned home have done so under their own free will and choice and that their families are safe, that they’re safe, and their friends are safe. I hope the ones that have chosen to stay feel a sense of peace and hope about a potential for a new life in Australia or otherwise."

Rapinoe added that she was "in awe of their courage."

The former U.S. soccer star faced scrutiny for not speaking out as the saga was unfolding in the country. Piers Morgan was among those who labeled Rapinoe as "hypocritical."

"The silence over this from Rapinoe, and so many supposed ‘feminists’ like her, is so telling, damning, and hypocritical," he wrote in a social media post. "They’d rather campaign for biological men to wreck women’s sport than campaign for these heroic young sportswomen to help save their lives."

She didn’t address her critics in her latest podcast episode with Sue Bird.

Initially, seven of the Iranian women’s soccer players accepted asylum but turned around and declined the opportunity at the last minute. Two players who stayed were seen training with one of the country’s premier clubs last week.

The Australian government faced criticism for not working fast enough to get to the players.

"We ended up with an outcome that is certainly far from ideal," Graham Thom, an advocacy coordinator for the Refugee Council of Australia, told The Associated Press.

US soccer legend Landon Donovan opens up on mental health struggles, redefining success

Landon Donovan may be one of the most recognizable American men’s soccer players of all time.

Donovan was a part of the 2002 World Cup that made it to the quarterfinals and helped them get out of the group stage in 2010 following a disappointing outing in 2006. He scored one of the most memorable goals in 2010 in extra time to put the U.S. over Algeria and advance to the knockout stage.

With the highs that carried Donovan to newfound fame, there were also tremendous lows.

Donovan details his bout with depression, reconfiguring what success meant to him and his incredible soccer career in his new book, "Landon: A Memoir," which is set to be released Tuesday.

He opened up to Fox News Digital about his mental health struggles and what depression looked like for him.

"I had two different types of experiences with depression," he said. "I realized through therapy and in retrospect that I’ve had an underlying depression, low-level depression my whole life that I deal with today. So, there are days where I wake up and I just feel down and sad and that is very manageable for me now. I’ve learned how to live with that.

"But then I’ve also had three episodes in my life of very serious depressive episodes that have lasted weeks that have been really, really hard to get out of. So, what that looked liked for me – not being able to get off the couch, not wanting to eat and just feeling like there’s a massive blanket on top of you that you can’t get off and that’s a horrible feeling."

The former American soccer star said he’s found ways to pull himself out of those moods, along with the help of therapy.

"I say the three Ms for me," he explained. "Medication has helped a lot in my life. Meditation helps a lot. And then, in some cases, my mom. Just my mom being there next to me has helped me. And so, I’m at a point now where, knock on wood, it’s been a long, long time since I’ve had a major depressive episode. But medication and meditation keep me calm and exercise really – these are the three things now that really keep me sane."

Donovan mentioned that he really began to struggle after the 2006 World Cup and failed to score or provide assists for the team. He took the brunt of the criticism from the media at the time. He was also left off the 2008 Olympics roster, though the team featured a U23 roster.

The silver lining to that is no one was going to Donovan’s MySpace page to unload furious comments or even death threats similar to what professional athletes hear now.

In that way, Donovan told Fox News Digital he feels "very fortunate."

"We see so many people who are in the public eye who have to deal with social media hatred, criticism, critiquing all the time. And this would have all been exacerbated for me had that all been around," he said. "I feel very, very fortunate for a number of reasons that social media didn’t exist at that time, but it is a very real thing.

"People assume that because we’re in the public eye and we make money and we have fame and our lives should be easy. And by the way, compared to the person who’s struggling to put food on the table, it is easy, so I’m not minimizing that. But it is difficult at times to deal with that. We are, as humans, social creatures. And we want to be liked, we all want to be liked, that’s normal. And to open your screen every day, your phone or your computer, and read people disparaging you, is really hard for humans. And sadly, we’ve seen it take many, many lives."

Donovan retired as one of the greatest Major League Soccer players the league had ever seen. He helped the U.S. to four Gold Cup titles and the LA Galaxy to four MLS Cups.

Success in 2026 compared to 2006 looks a little different to Donovan right now.

"Success for me now is peace," he told Fox News Digital. "I am at peace when I’m with my children. I’m at peace with my wife, when we get to travel, when I get to play golf. It’s sometimes crazy for me to think that a kid who grew up in a 900-square-foot home is flying to New York, staying in a Ritz-Carlton overlooking Central Park and to think back at like, how did all this happen? But it wasn’t always easy along the way. And so, for me today, peace is all about doing the things that I love.

"Sadly, my dad is a big part of the book. He’s a big character throughout the book and he wasn’t around growing up. I was able to reconcile with him at 25 years old, so almost 20 years ago. He passed away in December, and it was very eye-opening for me to be next to someone as they’re dying. You start to realize that when I am there one day, what is really, really, gonna matter to me? So, when I think about it that way, and try to think about that every day, what today is really gonna matter? Most things aren’t gonna matter. And so, the things that bring me peace are the things I’m gonna put my energy and effort into."

World Cup teams finalize US base camps as host cities prepare for global crowds

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup just three months away, cities across the United States are racing to finalize training facilities that national teams will call home during the global tournament.

Among them is Kansas City, which will serve as the base camp for defending champion Argentina national football team, a major win for the region as it prepares to welcome both players and tens of thousands of international fans.

Base camps are critical to World Cup operations. They serve as home headquarters where teams live, train and recover while traveling between match sites throughout the competition.

"From private practice fields to player recovery rooms, these facilities are designed to support some of the biggest names in soccer," said Alan Dietrich, who has worked closely with organizers.

Local leaders have spent more than a year pitching their cities to international teams, hoping to showcase not just athletic facilities but the broader community.

"We started actually over a year ago with countries beginning to visit," Dietrich said.

WORLD CUP DEMAND SPARKS LODGING SCRAMBLE IN KANSAS CITY

Tourism officials say the opportunity extends far beyond the sport itself. Hosting a base camp allows cities to introduce themselves to global audiences and build long-term international relationships.

"We knew that the World Cup was going to be kind of our first chance and probably our biggest chance to be engaging these international markets," said Devin Aaron with Visit KC.

Early expectations had Argentina basing in Miami, but Kansas City ultimately stood out during the selection process.

"When Argentina visited, they really loved it here," Dietrich said. "They loved our facilities, they loved our people."

The team will train at Sporting Kansas City’s Compass Minerals National Performance Center, a state-of-the-art facility in Kansas City, Kansas that will serve as Argentina’s training home base during the tournament.

The complex features multiple professional grade fields and elite level training amenities designed for international competition.

"If they’ve traveled a lot and they’re tired, they can come in here, turn the lights out and get a nice nap," Dietrich added.

Up to 100,000 Argentine fans are expected to travel to Kansas City during the tournament, a preview of the global crowds set to flood World Cup host cities across the U.S.

Across the U.S., cities selected as host sites and base camps are preparing for similar surges, as teams finalize training locations and fans follow their national squads.

Iranian women’s soccer team returns home after declining asylum in Australia: report

Earlier this month, Australia granted asylum to five members of the Iranian women's soccer team who were visiting the country for a tournament when the U.S. and Israel launched a joint military campaign against the country.

The remaining members of the team faced uncertainty.

After the team was knocked out of the Women’s Asian Cup, most of the players who initially sought asylum later changed their minds.

On Wednesday, all but two ultimately returned to Iran after declining asylum offers in Australia, according to unconfirmed Iranian state media reports.

Video circulating on social media showed the soccer players entering Iran after a flight landed in Turkey. Those same athletes were previously seen traveling through the country by bus shortly after the flight returned to Iran. Multiple officials were reportedly present at the border when the soccer team arrived.

Fatemeh Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh were the two members of the Iranian national team who reportedly elected to stay behind in Australia. Both have been training with the Brisbane Roar club.

Iran’s squad arrived in Australia for the tournament shortly before the war began Feb. 28. The team initially gained global attention after some players stayed silent during Iran’s national anthem before their first game.

When the team was knocked out of the tournament and faced the prospect of returning to a country under bombardment, calls grew for Australia’s government to offer the women asylum. Iranian groups in Australia and President Donald Trump were among those who expressed fears for the women’s safety.

Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref last week dismissed suggestions the women would be unsafe if they returned home, saying the country "welcomes its children with open arms and the government guarantees their security."

Trump also commented on the Iranian men’s team’s World Cup participation, suggesting last week that while the squad is "welcome" to compete in the U.S. after qualifying, it might not be "appropriate."

"The Iran National Soccer Team is welcome to The World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety," Trump wrote in a post to Truth Social post March 12.

Iran's men's team is slated to play in Inglewood, California, against New Zealand June 15. It is also scheduled to face Belgium June 21 before finishing group play against Egypt in Seattle June 26. The U.S. is hosting the tournament with Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.

Iran wrestling champion speaks out against country's treatment of female athletes amid soccer player concerns

Former Iranian wrestler Sardar Pashaei, like many, feels concern about the Iranian women's soccer players who are returning to their home country after not standing for the national anthem and being offered asylum by Australia.

Pashei, who won the 1998 World Youth Championship, knows how athletes who protest are treated in Iran, and he especially knows how female athletes are treated there.

"If you are a woman, you have a different layer of discrimination. You know, so it's a sexual harassment. It's forcing you to wear something that you don't want. And also, as a woman, you are banned from many sports," Pashaei told Fox News Digital.

Pashaei has seen close friends who are female athletes face this discrimination and are pursued by the regime.

"I know Soheila Farahani, she was a captain of the national volleyball team. She was sentenced to 74 lashes because there was a picture of her without hijab went public. So, this is the kind of example of the discrimination that they're facing," he said.

"Shaqaiq, one of my good friends who was a captain of handball team … she was under a lot of pressure. And now I think she lives in a country that she does not want to make it public because of her safety. Because the Islamic regime really went after her, even outside of the country, in European soil to bring her back."

Three of the six Iranian women's soccer players who accepted asylum in Australia are returning to Iran. Tina Kordrostami, a councilor for the Australian City of Ryde, told Fox News Channel's "Fox Report With Jon Scott" Saturday that the athletes are facing threats against their families.

"I know families have even been detained. I know family members are missing. "Coercion is being used here, intimidation tactics."

Pashaei says he wouldn't be surprised if the players have "a forced confession."

"So, the regime wants to say they're loyal to their government. This was all so-called playing a game of the enemies. And I am sure they will be under pressure, investigated," Pashaei said.

Pashaei remembers when he was competing with the difficulties that came with representing Iran under the Ayatollah.

"They always send the security people alongside with the team. They watch you. They wanna keep the presence of the regime right beside you. So, you feel that always," he said.

"I remember when we were traveling, the members of intelligence agencies were walking behind our doors overnight, so we don't go out. As soon as we went to the restaurant, they went there, took all of the alcoholic beverages, you know, pork food away from us."
