Nicole Kidman recalls being alone in Venice the night she learned her mother had died

Nicole Kidman is opening up about the day she found out her mother had died.

The 58-year-old actress spoke at the live speaker series, HISTORYTalks 2026, which is organized by the History Channel, on Saturday about a number of things, including learning of her mother's death just prior to accepting the best actress award for "Babygirl" at the Venice Film Festival in September 2024.

"I’d won best actress at Venice Film Festival. This seems to be such a common theme through my life," she said, per The Hollywood Reporter. "I was about to go on stage, and I found out my mother had died. I went right back to the room in Venice, got into bed and was completely devastated."

She recalled feeling as if she didn't know how she would be able to continue on without her mom, saying, she "was so much a part of my existence. The idea of being there at that particular moment was harrowing."

The "Big Little Lies" star went on to say that "the idea of being there at that particular moment was harrowing," and she began to take steps to leave Venice as soon as possible.

"I remember getting into a boat in the canal, and literally at night trying to find my way to the airport, and then turning around and going, I can’t even do this," she said. "And then went back into the bed, and I was alone. My husband wasn’t there. My children weren’t there. I’d gone to win an award. What should have been a beautiful thing, ended up with that. But there is the contrast of life."

Having gone through this tragic experience alone, Kidman says she now tells people "that’s when I know I’m resilient," and "can survive pretty much anything."

Kidman's mother, Janelle, died in September 2024 at the age of 84.

Two years after her mother's death, the Academy Award-winning actress shared with investigative journalist, Vicky Nguyen, as part of the private school's Silk Speaker Series, that she has plans to become a death doula.

"As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide," Kidman said per the San Francisco Chronicle. "Between my sister and I, we have so many children and our careers and our work, and wanting to take care of her because my father wasn’t in the world anymore, and that’s when I went, ‘I wish there was these people in the world that were there to sit impartially and just provide solace and care.’"

Kidman shares two daughters — Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 15 — with her ex-husband, Keith Urban, while her sister, Antonia, has six kids.

The actress has spoken about her close bond with her mother many times over the years, telling the Sydney Morning Herald about how her mom always pushed her to pursue her dreams, saying, "she carved her own path and wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to carve their own paths."

"Mom didn’t necessarily get the career that she wanted, but she was determined that her daughters would have opportunities that were equal," Kidman added. "That’s given me my life. And she gave me my life, she and my dad."

Nicole Kidman is diving into a whole new career path.

On Saturday, the "Babygirl" actress spoke with Vicky Nguyen — an investigative journalist and University of San Francisco graduate — as part of the private school's Silk Speaker Series and opened up about her plans to become a death doula nearly two years after her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, died at 84.

"As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide," Kidman, who admitted the idea "may sound a little weird," told the crowd, per the San Francisco Chronicle. "Between my sister and I, we have so many children and our careers and our work, and wanting to take care of her because my father wasn’t in the world anymore, and that’s when I went, ‘I wish there was these people in the world that were there to sit impartially and just provide solace and care.’"

"So that's part of my expansion and one of the things I will be learning," she added.

An end-of-life doula advocates self-determination and imparts psychosocial, emotional, spiritual and practical care to empower dignity throughout the dying process, according to the International End-of-Life Doula Association.

In September 2024, Kidman — who won the best actress award for her role in "Babygirl" at the Venice Film Festival, but had to miss the ceremony to be with family — shared the news of her mother's death in a statement delivered by the film's director, Halina Reijn.

"I arrived in Venice and found out shortly after that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman has just passed," Kidman said in a statement, per The Associated Press. "I’m in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her. She shaped me and made me."

A representative for Kidman confirmed the death at the time and told Fox News Digital, "The family is heartbroken and asks for privacy at this time."

Throughout the years, Kidman has been open about her close bond with her mom and shared insight into her mother's health struggles.

During an interview with NPR's "Fresh Air" podcast in 2022, Kidman said, "I'm at the place where I'm being given the chance to view the world, because of how close we are. My mom is giving me the chance to view the world through an 81-year-old woman's eyes. That is so beneficial right now, because she's so cognizant. She has every brain faculty available, so she hasn't lost anything. She hasn't lost any memory, which is fascinating, and she's extremely bright."

"She's giving me access, because she's also very direct and very honest, and so I'm getting access to the world through her eyes, my mother's eyes," she continued. "It's her perspective, obviously. There's many different 80-year-old perspectives, but it's her perspective, and her particular path, but I'm drinking it in and learning."

In 2020, Kidman opened up to the Sydney Morning Herald about how her mom always inspired her to chase her dreams.

A 20-foot-tall arrangement of 10,000 yellow orchids anchored the entry to the main party space, which featured a custom fabricated 40-by-15-foot-wide central bar, presented by Tequila Don Julio, in stainless steel at the center of the room, over which hung 24 six-foot-tall Noguchi-inspired parchment lanterns, bathing the room in a warm white coloration, according to a press release obtained by Fox News Digital.

Guests enjoyed a meal curated by chef Evan Funke of Funke, Beverly Hills, and Funke Catering & Events. The meal consisted of lasagna alla Cantonese, Mediterranean sea bass, grilled prime ribeye with custom chocolate bark for dessert.

To top it off, partygoers were offered by-the-slice Domino's Pizza and In-N-Out burgers throughout the night.

The Oscar winner, who was one of the ceremony's presenters, paired the striking look with a diamond necklace along with matching rings and stud earrings. Paltrow wore her hair styled straight over one shoulder and completed her look with white pointed toe pumps.

Kate Hudson sparkled in a seafoam green Giorgio Armani Privé gown that was covered in crystal embroidery. During a recent interview on the "Las Culturistas" podcast, the 58-year-old actress revealed she "cannot stand bad breath," calling it a "dealbreaker" for her when it comes to men. She noted, "You want me to lean in? Smell good."

"You could be the most gorgeous, gorgeous guy, and you come at me with bad breath, and I'm like, 'No, no, no,'" she shared. "It's like, if I say ‘breathe on me’ and I have to recoil? Yikes. I'm out. I am out. You could not offer me enough money."

The "Babygirl" actress added that "the taste of the mouth and the smell of the mouth is very important to me."

"I almost relate to that. I lost my father [in 2014], and my main thing was finding out why," she explained. "I lost him very suddenly to a heart attack, but I wanted to know why, and it became an obsession. So, I get why Kay chooses to do the job, because it gives her a sense of control over something that is completely uncontrollable."

Kidman confessed that Fallon's team asked her to perform an autopsy on the show, much to his surprise.

"Maybe it was on a dummy or something, but either way, I don't think that would have been a very … I don't think you would have liked that, right?" she asked.

Kidman noted that her new skill is just "part of the job," before explaining how she trained for her role in "Scarpetta."

"I worked with an incredible medical examiner, and I studied him," she revealed.

Furness, 69, officially filed for divorce from Jackman, 56, in New York on May 27. Jackman and Furness announced their amicable split in September 2023.

In January, Jackman and his former "Music Man" co-star Sutton Foster sparked romance rumors when they were spotted holding hands while going out to dinner in Los Angeles.
