‘Top Gun: Maverick’ star saved late grandfather’s watch before home burned down in Palisades Fire

"Top Gun: Maverick" star Miles Teller is detailing the moments leading up to his family's evacuation during the Palisades Fire.

During an appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," the actor explained that before his home in the Pacific Palisades burned down, his grandmother had relocated to Southern California and was living with him after his grandfather died.

"So, my wife and I woke up, and where we lived in the Palisades, we were kind of on some elevation. So, as soon as we opened our curtains in our master bedroom balcony, we saw at our 12 o'clock the fire starting. And it was very small. I think it was at two acres at that point. And my wife, who is from Southern California, was starting to get a bit anxious but ready to act," Teller told Colbert.

Teller explained that the fire was about 3 miles away from his home when they first spotted flames.

"And Keleigh said, ‘If that fire goes from 12 to three o’clock, we're really in trouble, and we've got to move.' I was taking care of my grandma at the time because my grandfather, who I was extremely close with, he had just passed away a couple weeks before. So, I was planning on moving her out to California with me," he said.

"So, I was like, ‘Hey Mup.’ That's what we call her. I said, ‘Don’t be alarmed, but maybe you should start getting your paperwork together and your meds and things like that.' And then we just kinda grabbed very little. We never thought that it was going to come where we were. It's very residential."

Teller explained that his home wasn't surrounded by any "brush," just family homes and family-owned businesses.

"Fire is scary. I grew up in the East Coast and hurricanes a lot of the time in Florida. Usually, they're kind of scaring you for like a week. You have a lot of heads-up. But for the fire, man it moved fast. I would say from the time we woke up and saw it to mandatory evacuation, I would say like 90 minutes to two hours. And we're watching it on TV as it's happening, and people are abandoning cars.

"At that point, people are already grabbing their kids and running down the street, and it was pure … it was pretty chaotic. Absolutely."

Teller flashed his watch during the talk show and explained that, while evacuating, he grabbed his grandfather's watch.

"One of the items I took was my grandfather's watch. I don't know what camera that is," Teller said, while pointing to his grandfather's watch on his wrist.

At the LA FireAid Benefit Concert Thursday, Teller broke his silence after he and his wife, Keleigh Teller, lost their home during the Palisades Fire.

"First, I just want to give a shout-out. I know there are a lot of first responders here tonight. I know there are a lot watching at home. So, thank you all for keeping us safe. Thank you.

"My wife and I, like a lot of us in the Pacific Palisades, lost our home in the fires, and my heart breaks for everyone who has been affected across the city. Truly, my heart goes out to all you guys."

Last month, Keleigh took to Instagram to post before-and-after photos of their house, noting in the caption that she regretted leaving her wedding dress behind when she and the actor evacuated before the flames consumed their property.

"If you’re in the LA area PLEASE get out if you can. I wish I grabbed my wedding dress .. wish I did a lot different but it doesn’t matter, stay safe, get out," Keleigh wrote in part at the time.

Teller was joined on stage by a neighbor of his, who shared his moving, personal story about how the Palisades Fire affected him and his family.

Musicians gathered in Los Angeles for the FireAid benefit concert, which was held at the Intuit Dome and Kia Forum. The goal of the benefit was to rebuild communities decimated by the fires that burned through Los Angeles in January.

Musicians including Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes, actors including Paul Rudd and Miles Teller and even athlete Aaron Rodgers all went viral for their appearances at the show, sending fans into a tizzy.

The actress shared a series of photos highlighting the exciting night, admitting that one of her children was tired.

"Even with one happy and sleepy child I had the best time. @TaylorSwift you're such an inspiration," the 38-year-old wrote.

In another image, Gadot captured a security guard looking mesmerized during Swift's set, writing "Even the toughest security guy can't stop singing."

Karma was aligned for the audiences of night one and three of the MetLife Stadium stretch of the Era's Tour, as rapper Ice Spice popped up for the final song of the night. Performing the remix to Swift's song, "Karma," featuring Ice Spice, both women walked down the stage and played to screaming crowds.

On Friday night, Swift also debuted her surprise music video with Ice Spice during the concert.

Additional stars spotted over Swift's three-day stay in Jersey included Bradley Cooper, Ben Stiller, Mike Meyers, Gordon Ramsay, Julia Garner, and Emily Ratajkowski, among others.

Swift's tour will continue through August, with her next appearance being Chicago.

'Top Gun: Maverick' is the most-watched movie on Paramount+

Tom Cruise's latest blockbuster film, "Top Gun: Maverick," became the most-watched show in the world during its opening weekend release on the Paramount+ streaming platform.

During the holiday weekend from December 22nd to the 25th, the aerospace action flick took the title of most-watched movie premiere on Paramount+ away from its predecessor, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," by 60%, according to Variety.

The "Top Gun" sequel also beat other films starring Cruise that are featured on the streaming platform, including the initial 1986 movie by 400% and the entire "Mission Impossible" franchise by 140%.

"Maverick's" success on the streaming platform comes as Paramount+ is offering a discount of 50% for annual subscription plans until January 2nd. Cruise's new film was a massive hit at the box office, earning over $1.4 billion in ticket sales.

Miles Teller isn’t ruling out a career in professional baseball.

After the Philadelphia Phillies clinched a spot in the 2022 World Series, the "Top Gun: Maverick" star said he’d consider making the job switch.

When asked if he would quit his acting career to play with the Phillies, Teller responded, "That’s a tough one."

The actor said he would put his job on hold "right now" to be a part of the team.

The actor was spotted at Los Angeles International Airport with wife Keleigh Sperry wearing red to show support for the Phillies. They were both wearing Phillies hats ahead of Game 1 of the World Series Friday night.

Miles Teller celebrated the Philadelphia Phillies heading to the 2022 World Series by taking shots at a pizzeria.

Sunday night was not the actor's first Phillies post season game he attended. Teller also appeared at game four against the San Diego Padres at Citizen Bank Park on Saturday.

The "Top Gun: Maverick" star attended game five of the NLCS with his wife Keleigh Sperry. She shared a photo of the two on her Instagram after the Phillies clenched the win.

‘SNL’: ‘Top Gun’ star Miles Teller hosts season 48 premiere, gets to mercilessly mock cold open

"Saturday Night Live" opened its season 48 premiere with "Top Gun: Maverick" star Miles Teller playing Peyton Manning commentating on (and mercilessly mocking) the cold open in a very self-aware cold open-within-a-cold-open – if that makes sense.

The fake Peyton described his "Monday Night Football" show with brother Eli Manning (cast member Andrew Dismukes) as their "Manningcast where we do live analysis of what’s already played on TV."

Teller said they would watch the first cold open sketch of the season to see what the cast and writers spent the "entire summer coming up with."

"Oh, good a Trump sketch. Way to mix it up," Teller said sarcastically as cast members acted out a scene set at Mar-a-Lago.

The co-hosts went on to critique the cast members' performances in the sketch, highlighting the four new comedians in light of the stark changes in the lineup since last season.

Veterans Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor, Aristotle Athari and Chris Redd all left at the end of last season.

The new cast members are llo Marcello Hernández, Molly Kearney, Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker.

"The new guy’s just panicking he’s just staring at the camera," Dismukes as Eli said of Longfellow after saying that he had forgotten to shut the door following his bit part in the sketch. "That might be the only time we see him tonight."

The show often pokes fun at itself about some new cast members being underused.

They also touched on impression wizard McKinnon’s departure when Teller suggested the sketch should have more "fun" impressions like Anthony Fauci, Rudy Giuliani and Lindsey Graham – all of which were McKinnon.

The two then looked at the sketch’s "stats," noting that of 14 attempted jokes there was only "one mild laugh and two chuckles."

"Thank God they’ve got [musical guest] Kendrick Lamar because that’s the only reason anyone is tuning in."

Fellow "Top Gun" star Jon Hamm made a surprise appearance in the sketch, saying "I don’t know but it’s not comedy" when asked by Teller to give his opinion of what he was seeing in the sketch.

Olympic snowboarder Shawn White also made a random surprise appearance as former President Trump’s special master for his Mar-a-Lago FBI investigation Judge Raymond Dearie, which Teller called "desperate stunt casting."

Hamm threw shade at Teller by saying sometimes "SNL" will bring in real celebrities when the night’s host isn’t famous enough.

"I mean, when they couldn't get the star of the big summer movie: your Tom Cruise or your Jon Hamm, they had to get the co-star," Hamm deadpanned to Teller of why he and White were brought in.

Teller answered indignantly, "Well, I heard they rarely put the hosts in cold open, so when they do, it is special."

"Special? Or is it desperate?" Hamm replied.

Later, in his monologue, Teller remarked about how much he actually loves "Saturday Night Live." This is pretty standard for hosts to say, but in Teller’s case he brought receipts.

He said his mom, who was in the audience, found an old VHS tape of his sister and him reenacting an old "SNL" Spartan cheerleader sketch from the mid-90s made famous by former cast members Will Ferrell and Cheri Oteri.

He said that alongside his sister he was cast as Cheri Oteri "because I had the frame for it" before showing the very real, very homemade tape.

He added, "How crazy is that? My parents used to watch me doing skits in my living room and now they're here watching me host ‘Saturday Night Live!’"

Miles Teller gave fans a glimpse into the moment he met the royal family.

Teller, 35, was introduced to Prince William and Catherine at the May premiere of "Top Gun: Maverick" in the United Kingdom.

"I kind of had a sheet to prep to make sure I didn't mess it up," the actor admitted during an appearance on "The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon."

Despite being given a list of "dos and don'ts," Teller doesn't think the encounter went the way it was supposed to go.

Teller added: "I mean, blue as the bluest ocean, Jimmy."

"Top Gun" is not based off a true story, but it does pull from realistic events. The movie was actually inspired by an article called "Top Guns" by Israeli writer and director, Ehud Yonay. Many U.S. Navy pilots have said that the movie is an accurate portrayal of what life is like as a Navy pilot. Although there are parts of the movie that are completely fictional, like the fact there is no trophy for the best fighter pilot in the class, a lot of it was inspired by the real life training program. Recruitment has also been affected by the Tom Cruise films. After the release of "Top Gun" in 1986, there was a 500% increase in applications to be naval aviators.

What caused Goose's death in "Top Gun?"

Spoiler alert: Goose died in the original "Top Gun" movie. In the 1986 movie, Goose was Maverick's wingman and best friend. While they were flying one day during training, their plane started to spin uncontrollably and Maverick could not get them out of the spin, so they both ejected from the plane. When Goose ejected, he hit his head on the canopy. They both fell into the ocean, but Goose died instantly. Goose is in "Top Gun: Maverick," though only through flashbacks. His character does live on through his son, Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, who is a pilot in "Top Gun: Maverick" and played by Miles Teller.

The director of the movie Joseph Kosinski also gave his take. He talked to Insider about the reasoning behind not having McGillis and Meg Ryan, who played Goose's wife in "Top Gun," in the new movie. He said they never planned on having them in "Top Gun: Maverick" because it allowed them to introduce new characters and he "didn't want every storyline to always be looking backwards."

The cast started off with small planes and worked up to bigger ones. The whole cast flew in real fighter jets with real military trained pilots on real military bases. The G-force the actors feel in the movie is also real. In fact, Teller talked with Seth Meyers on "Late Night" about how he had "flame retardant, pesticides and jet fuel" in his bloodstream and was covered in hives while filming.

The third installment of the series was supposed to be split into two parts, similar to the last movies in franchises like "Harry Potter," "Twilight" and "The Hunger Games." The first part of the movie came out in 2016, but the second part never got made.

The second movie, "The Divergent Series: Ascendant" was supposed to be released a year after part one, in March 2017. Lots of things started to happen that caused Lionsgate to stray from their plan.

Miles Teller hinted a "Top Gun 3" could be in the works.

While the 35-year-old actor could not confirm the news, he revealed he's spoken about it with Tom Cruise.

"That would be great, but that's all up to T.C.," Teller told Entertainment Tonight. "It's all up to Tom."

"I've been having some conversations with him about it. We'll see."

The "Top Gun" sequel reached $1 billion in worldwide box office earnings in its fifth week of release.

The movie marked Cruise's first $100 million opening of his career. The film earned an estimated $124 million in ticket sales, Paramount Pictures previously said.

Before "Maverick," his biggest domestic debut was in 2005 with Steven Spielberg’s "War of the Worlds," which opened to $64 million. The next highest was "Mission: Impossible — Fallout" with $61 million in 2018.

"Top Gun: Maverick" had an extremely long journey to get to the theaters. The sequel to the late Tony Scott’s "Top Gun," which was released in 1986, was originally slated to open in the summer of 2020. Its marketing campaign technically started in July 2019.

The pandemic got in the way of those plans, however, and it was delayed several times. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and co-produced and co-financed by Skydance, the sequel reportedly cost $152 million to make.

While many films went straight to streaming due to the coronavirus pandemic, Cruise made sure that didn't happen.

"That was not going to happen ever," he said at Cannes in excerpts published by The Hollywood Reporter. "That was never going to happen."

Miles Teller spoke out on Twitter for the first time since allegedly being jumped by two men while on vacation in Hawaii.

The "Whiplash" star’s wife, Keleigh Sperry Teller, 28, took to her Instagram Story on Friday night to claim he was "jumped by 2 men" while they were vacationing with Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley.

The 34-year-old actor broke his silence on the alleged incident in response to a sports announcer who seemed to make light of the headlines announcing the attack.

SiriusXM host Pat McAfee commented on the story while showing a clip from WWE "Smackdown" showing one performer dealing a massive uppercut to his opponent in which he joked that "Miles Teller didn’t even eat a shot that hard."

The joke clearly riled up Teller, who responded to the tweet and criticized McAfee for making light of the situation.

"I got jumped by two guys in a bathroom. Never met them before in my life but ya cool wrestling segue bud," the actor wrote.

McAfee responded to the tweet by apologizing and giving a slightly snarky rebuttal.

"Miles.. I apologize for not knowing the whole story. I will fix my position and make it right... with that being said, it was a pretty good segue," he wrote.

Teller’s comments echo those made by his wife, who posted Friday that her husband was attacked by two strangers "after they trapped him in a bathroom." She did not share what, if any, injuries he sustained.

Her revelation came hours after a TMZ report claimed the actor was "punched in the face" in a dispute over money. Keleigh Teller said that report was "completely false."

She went on to claim the Maui incident is now being investigated by police. Reps for Teller and the Maui Police Department did not immediately return Fox News' requests for comment.

In a statement Friday, a police spokesperson told People that officers "responded to a report of an assault that occurred at a West Maui restaurant involving a male victim and one responsible party." The spokesperson confirmed authorities are investigating.

The statement did not make mention of a second suspect and said "no further information" was available.
