The top 6 smart gardening gadgets

Few of us would have thought we’d spend 2020 locked away inside our apartments and houses. Some of us are working remotely as the economy gradually reopens. The good news? If you live in an area where you can start a garden, it’s now easier than ever to monitor the soil, prep for seed planting with electronic tools, and even order seeds from an online shop.

These are the top six "smart" gardening gadgets Fox News has compiled:

1. Ego Power+ Cultivator Attachment

Start with the basics -- a cultivator to prep the soil for planting. This tiller attachment works with the Ego Power+ Multi-Head System. It has 9.5-inch tines and runs on battery power so no need for gas or power cords. There are also attachments for a weed whacker and trimmers.

2. Orbit B-Hyve XR Sprinkler Timer

The smartest gadget we’ve found for smart gardens? This sprinkler timer from Orbit connects to your Wi-Fi signal -- the app lets you automate watering cycles. The device adjusts to weather conditions and won’t run if it rains. (Expect some shipping delays due to COVID-19.)

3. 4-in-1 Soil Tester

Checking the soil helps you find out when to plant (based on soil temperature), what to plant in the garden and how much watering you might need to do. This electronic sensor has an 8-inch probe and shows all of the soil data on a bright, readable display.

6 GADGETS FOR A MUCH SMARTER SMART HOME

4. Stihl HSA 25 Battery-Powered Garden Shears

Another clever product for a super-smart garden, these battery-powered shears can help you trim pesky weeds. The device runs for about 120 minutes per charge. There’s an attachment for dealing with larger shrubs in your yard, as well.

5. Seedsheets

One of the cool things about this product is that you can design your own layout. It’s a thin layer of protective material with the seed pods already embedded. At Seedsheets.com, you can pick the seeds you want and decide what plants will grow next to each other.

6. Rise Gardens Indoor Garden

If you don’t quite have the space to plant a garden in your yard, this indoor garden system is the perfect alternative. An app lets you automate watering, lighting (using LED lights) and the nutrients. You can grow lettuce, kale, tomatoes and much more.

7 apps to get you through the coronavirus lockdown

Get all the latest news on coronavirus and more delivered daily to your inbox. Sign up here.

The coronavirus pandemic is impacting every area of life. Fortunately, several new apps can help you stay connected, deal with stress and anxiety, and even track symptoms. These are the best of the recent crop of iPhone and Android apps for anyone to use.

1. CDC app

Many experts say the CDC should be the primary source of valid coronavirus information. This puts all of that helpful data in your hands. The app includes a self-checker to see if you might have the virus plus the latest news reports from the CDC.

2. FEMA app

The FEMA app is designed to alert you about imminent dangers. You can add as many as five locations and then receive notifications if there is a danger in your area. For example, if your state issues a shelter-in-place order for the coronavirus, you’d see an alert.

3. COVID-19 Symptom Tracker

This symptom tracker lets everyday folks enter their health details anonymously. You can input whether you’ve tested positive, your symptoms, and also that you are feeling healthy. It helps researchers look for geographic trends.

BEST HOME OFFICE TECH AMID CORONAVIRUS STAY-AT-HOME ORDERS

4. Oura

This app works with the Oura ring, which is mostly intended for sleep tracking. However, the ring can also monitor your body temperature in real time (reading it every minute). You can see fluctuations and trends in the app to see if you’re getting sick.

5. Private Kit: Safe Paths

Developed by MIT, this app lets you track your own location over the last month and compare where you’ve been with other users (who can privately share their location with you). For monitoring the outbreak, it helps you see if you’ve been around infected people.

6. HowWeFeel

Sometimes an app is most useful to researchers and not as much to individual users. HowWeFeel is one example. With it, you can enter your current conditions such as whether or not you have hypertension. The data helps reveal self-reported coronavirus trends by location.

CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE CORONAVIRUS COVERAGE

7. Nod

The Nod app was originally intended for college students. The company made a pivot and it now helps people who feel isolated find ways to connect. I tried the suggestion to eat a meal with someone over a video chat.

Best home office tech amid coronavirus stay-at-home orders

Now that most states have issued stay-at-home orders amid the coronavirus outbreak, many of us are scrambling to find the right office products. We still need to finish our projects, crank out business reports, and keep tabs on colleagues using apps like Zoom or Slack. These home office gadgets will help you stay connected and productive.

1. Microsoft Surface Pro 7 laptop

The most important thing to know about the Surface Pro 7 laptop is that it has an outstanding webcam. It runs at 5-megapixels, which is higher than most, so all of your video chats will look crisp and vivid. Studio-quality microphones in the laptop make you sound clear as well. A kickstand on the back helps you prop up the laptop for Skype calls.

2. Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850 printer ($850)

Every home office needs a high-end printer. This Epson model uses massive ink tanks that last for 6,000 printouts. You can also make copies and scan documents. When you need to print contracts and other legal documents, or business material, the EcoTank Pro works fast -- printing about 25 pages per minute. The front paper tray can hold 500 sheets.

6 GADGETS FOR A MUCH SMARTER SMART HOME

3. HP EliteOne 800 desktop ($1,549)

If you decide to skip the laptop (we won’t need to go mobile anyway), this all-in-one desktop is a beast. The screen measures 24-inches and has a pop-up 2-megapixel webcam on the top (push it down into a slot for more security). One nice bonus: The Elite 800 comes with a keyboard and mouse that match the silver-and-black desktop styling.

4. Plume SuperPods ($297)

There’s nothing more frustrating when you work at home than a sketchy Wi-Fi signal. Plume solves that by using a mesh network that extends the signal around your house. Make sure you spring for the three-pack so there is extra coverage. A major perk: Even the technologically challenged can configure the network using a simple smartphone app.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

5. Seville Classics Airlift S3 Electric Adjustable Standing Desk ($550)

Since many of us can barely leave the house, a standing desk is a must-own. This adjustable desk helps you stand up and move around while still working. With a quick button press, you can raise or lower the surface, which doubles as a dry-erase whiteboard. At 30x54-inches, the desk has enough space for a desktop, keyboard, and your cup of coffee.

6 gadgets to help you track your health amid coronavirus fears

Your personal health has suddenly become incredibly important in light of coronavirus fears. Being able to check your own temperature is vital because going to the doctor can expose you to illnesses — and if you’re infected, you’ll expose everyone else. While these gadgets won’t prevent you from getting sick, they can help with personal health and will certainly give you more information before you head to the clinic for any reason.

1. Withings Thermo ($99)

This slightly older product is still worth considering. I trust the brand — which reacquired itself from Nokia in 2018. The digital thermometer connects to an app over Wi-Fi and takes quick temperature readings. You see a color-coding for the temperature level and the readout.

2. Molekule Air Mini ($399)

Let’s be clear: An air purifier will not prevent you from getting sick. However, if you catch the flu (any variation, including the coronavirus) then the Molekule Air Mini can keep the air clean around you to help with breathing. The Air Mini is meant for smaller homes and apartments.

6 GADGETS FOR A MUCH SMARTER SMART HOME

3. Garmin Venu ($350)

The Garmin Venu smartwatch is extremely high-tech. It can give you stats for your stress and breathing/respiration, resting heart rate, and your pulse oximeter (which measures your blood oxygen saturation levels). These features help you keep an eye on your stats, which makes it easier to notice any changes in your health.

4. Speck Presidio Grip Smartphone Case ($40)

Let’s be clear once again — a smartphone case that is protected from bacteria is not going to ward off the coronavirus entirely, but the Speck Presidio Grip case does reduce germ propagation. It’s at least an extra layer of protection (and it keeps your phone safe, too).

10 USEFUL GADGETS FOR THE MODERN OFFICE

5. Hidrate Spark 3 Smart Water Bottle ($60)

If you do get sick with any illness, it’s important to stay hydrated. You can keep track of your water intake and even find the water bottle if you lose it.
Coronavirus-battling robots deployed to help fight deadly outbreak in China

Could robots be a vital weapon in the battle against the novel coronavirus?

The outbreak that originated in Wuhan, China, has infected more than 60,000 people worldwide and the death toll stands at more than 1,300 as of Friday. This has taxed human health care workers, doctors and nurses.

Robots have already been deployed in some Chinese hospitals to deliver medicines and disinfect surfaces, according to media reports, and they have also been used to transport supplies in Wuhan.

TRACK CORONAVIRUS’ GLOBAL SPREAD IN REAL TIME WITH THIS INTERACTIVE MAP

Colin Angle, the CEO of consumer robot specialist iRobot, told Fox News that robots are hard at work helping the infected patients and delivering medical supplies.

“They meet the needs of a potentially large infected population while minimizing the risk of exposure to caregivers and people who don’t know if they are infected or not,” he said.

“They don't get tired, they can be deployed all over a hospital, supervised by a small number of humans, to multiply a workforce,” said robotics expert Marcia O'Malley, a professor of mechanical engineering at Rice University in Houston, Texas. “They can take on tasks that are repetitive.”

CORONAVIRUS FORCES APPLE, GOOGLE AND OTHER TECH GIANTS TO TAKE PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

That’s one important factor -- robots don’t mind tedium. As the outbreak reaches a large cross section of Wuhan, robots will work tirelessly at all hours of the day.

O'Malley said robots in China can do more than deliver medicine, however. Some can scan medicine inventory and remove outdated supplies. Others can spray disinfectants and can even prevent the spread of infectious diseases in public spaces.

“Robots can help with decontamination and reducing human-to-human transmission risk by reducing exposure,” O'Malley said. "Artificial intelligence might be helpful in data science aspects, tracking information about the spread of cases to determine risk profiles and identify ways to limit spread if we understand better how it is spread.”

CATS ARE WEARING CORONAVIRUS MASKS IN CHINA

One example of this is with the GermFalcon bots used to clean airplanes. On inbound flights arriving from China into LAX recently, the disinfectant bots used ultraviolet scans to make sure the planes were not infected, according to Elliot Kreitenberg, the co-founder and president of GermFalcon. (He says bots are operated by humans.)

“The GermFalcon uses strategically positioned lamps to deliver strong doses to all high-touch surfaces,” Kreitenberg said.

Gilead Science is reportedly working on a treatment for the coronavirus, and Angle says robots could be useful in the development process. The company did not respond to Fox News' request for more information.

According to Angle, some of the drug discovery work related to coronavirus would not be as efficient and fast unless bots did the sample testing.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

JD Logistics is using medicine delivery robots outside of hospitals, as well. They operate autonomously and can navigate through traffic. The first bot delivered supplies to the Wuhan Ninth Hospital earlier this month with plans to do daily deliveries.

Angle says an outbreak creates complexities -- it’s extremely difficult to know who is infected and how to proceed with caution yet immediacy. Robots help because they can complete mundane (and often complex) tasks to assist the real stars: the human health care workers.

5 apps to order food for the Super Bowl

Super Bowl Sunday is often associated with the food as much as it is the game itself. Luckily for those watching the event, there are a variety of food delivery apps.

These innovations, made possible thanks to the smartphone, allow hungry viewers to browse a menu of local eateries, see delivery notices in real-time (thanks to GPS in the delivery vehicle) and then place a “favorite” order later.

Here are five of the most popular apps, all of which are available on Apple's App Store and Google Play.

DoorDash

My personal favorite, DoorDash is speedy and technically advanced. The app notifies you when the driver has picked up your order and is en route, and also when it arrives at your door. A recent Taco Bell order arrived in only 12 minutes.

The app is nearly ubiquitous: it works in 4,000 cities around the U.S.

Postmates

Postmates is an interesting app, as the company hires drivers who are able to do more than pickup a food order, such as picking up items at places like Walgreens and even a clothing store.

It is available in most urban areas around the U.S. In a previous test in the Minneapolis area, I ordered sandwiches and chips and they arrived in 20 minutes.

CLICK HERE FOR FULL SUPER BOWL LIV COVERAGE

UberEats

Operated by ride-sharing company Uber, UberEats works in over 500 cities around the U.S.

I loved how easy the interface is for ordering any meal. The main claim to fame? UberEats has an efficient operation that ensures speedy delivery.

Grubhub

One of my favorite food delivery apps, Grubhub charges a little less for their deliveries than DoorDash. The app doesn’t send as many notifications, such as when an order arrives at your door.

It’s available in 2,700 cities. In previous tests, a burger and fries from Applebees arrived hot in 15 minutes.

Goldbelly

Although this service doesn’t deliver in minutes, it is worth keeping on your radar. Orders can ship overnight to your doorstep, and there are hundreds of meal options, including some from local and eclectic restaurants.

In a previous test, a sausage order from Pat LaFrieda's arrived in a styrofoam cooler, ready to cook.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

8 cool connected home gadgets for 2020

The modern connected home is a marvel of engineering. And it doesn’t cost that much to upgrade. These gadgets were all announced recently and are shipping soon. They provide voice-activated house control, high-tech security features, and ultra-convenience.

1. Lifx Switch ($99)

More than just a face-plate for your light switch, the Lifx Switch is far more advanced. You can control it by voice using a bot like Amazon Alexa, and there are presets for dimming all of the lights in your house. It even works with older LED light bulbs.

2. Kohler Moxie Showerhead + Wireless Speaker ($219)

An ingenious showerhead-speaker combination, the Kohler Moxie uses Bluetooth to sync to your smartphone. The speaker inserts easily into the showerhead, and it lasts about seven hours on a charge. There are 60 angled nozzles in the showerhead for a refreshing cleanse.

3. Coddle Pixel Platform Bed ($1,399)

This “statement” bed is made of long-lasting fabric. For a connected home, there are two USB ports on either side and an outlet for keeping your devices up and running. The innovative, double-sided queen-sized mattress encourages airflow so it’s never too hot or too cold.

7 AMAZING GADGETS FOR OUTDOOR WINTER ADVENTURES

4. Arlo Pro 3 Floodlight Camera ($250)

One of the best features of this connected home floodlight for outdoor use is that it uses no wires or cables. A rechargeable battery provides the power, and the floodlight connects to Wi-Fi. A night vision view from your phone shows what is lurking in the dark.

5. Google Nest Hub Max ($229)

The vivid and colorful screen of this connected home speaker and display is quite stunning. Pictures pop off the screen, as do YouTube videos. With the Google Assistant bot, you can make commands from on high to dim the lights or control a Nest thermostat.

6. August Wi-Fi Smart Lock ($TBD)

The big news with this popular smart lock is that you don’t need to use a Wi-Fi bridge anymore -- the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock connects directly to your Wi-Fi signal. It’s voice-controlled, or you can lock and unlock with your phone. A nice trick? You can unlock remotely for guests.

10 USEFUL GADGETS FOR THE MODERN OFFICE

7. Hoop Cam Plus ($129)

This tiny home security camera uses facial recognition to spot family members and can send notifications. (The AI actually improves face-scanning over time.) You can see when the kids get home or when you have a delivery at the front door.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

8. Trifo Lucy ($799)

This unique robotic vacuum is great for cleaning your carpet and wood floors, but it also has a second purpose. A night-vision camera can spot intruders and notify you about break-ins. The bot responds to Amazon Alexa commands and lasts two hours per charge.

7 amazing gadgets for outdoor winter adventures

In the dead of January, there is only one solution to the cold and snow: to venture outside with high-tech gear. Here are seven gadgets to help you explore the world, record a few high-def videos, find your way on a trail and stay warm even in the subzero temperatures.

1. Gobi Heat Dune Vest ($179)

Staying warm in winter just got easier. The Gobi Heat Dune vest uses a battery pack that slips into a compartment and lasts 10 hours per charge. Three heat levels (low, medium, high) allow you to customize the vest, which is also water-resistant.

2. Insta360 One R Twin Edition ($480)

Another unusual winter gadget, the Insta360 One R captures 360-degree video in crisp 5.7K resolution, which is better than most home televisions. It’s waterproof and captures still images as well, so you can stick one to a helmet when you ski or snowmobile.

CES 2020 WRAP-UP: TOP TECH ON SHOW IN LAS VEGAS

3. Suunto 7 Smartwatch ($499)

Available later this month, the Suunto 7 is a winter trekkers' best friend. One of the better features is the color navigation maps, which are easy to read.

There are also workout modes on the smartwatch for alpine skiing, hiking, and snowshoeing.

4. Salomon S/PRO Custom Heat Connect Ski Boot ($750)

A highly unique product for winter adventures, this ski boot connects to an app on your smartphone. Wearers can customize the “comfort zone” to the desired temp, and the boot will adjust itself as you ski.

There is also an option to see the battery level for the left and right foot.

5. Kelvin Phantom Heated Jacket ($299)

With five heat zones (four on the front and one on the back), the Kelvin Phantom Heated Jacket will keep you toasty even in harsh conditions. There are three heat levels, and the included battery pack includes a USB port for charging your phone simultaneously.

HOW TO SPOT A HIDDEN WEBCAM

6. Vasque Coldspark Ultradry Hiking Boots ($140)

It’s almost strange to wear these winter hiking boots since they stay so warm in cold weather but weigh only about two pounds and four ounces. The high-tech material, called Retain, is thin and light so you can hike longer but still insulates the boot.

7. Greenworks Pro 60 Volt 22-in Single-Stage Cordless Electric Snow Blower ($599)

A surprisingly powerful snowblower that discharges snow up to 30 feet, this Greenworks model is new for this winter season. There are two battery ports and two batteries included that switch over automatically, so the snowblower has a run time of about 60 minutes.

GET THE FOX NEWS APP

CES: Here are the gadgets you will be using in 2020

Gadgets have a unique ability to change our lives and the latest and greatest are at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. A new smart toothbrush means fewer trips to the dentist. A pillow that gently moves your head to reduce snoring means your spouse won’t stay up all night. In 2020, new gadgets like these are designed to improve your life.

1. Samsung Ballie

Available: TBD

While it’s not clear when this tiny rolling robot will ship, one thing is clear -- it looks amazing. The ball can control smart home devices and tell when you have completed tasks.

2. Motion Pillow

Available: Now

Sleep tech keeps improving, but this smart pillow doesn’t just tell you how you slept or connect to an app. It gently moves your head to encourage less snoring.

3. Colgate Plaqless Pro Smart Electric Toothbrush

Available: Later this year

Some connected toothbrushes will tell you how often you brush, but this new model tells you where to brush. A sensor knows if you have removed enough film from your teeth.

6 GADGETS FOR A MUCH SMARTER SMART HOME

4. Razer Tomahawk Gaming Case

Available: This year

PC gaming is back in full force, especially with the advent of e-sports. This small case is modular and compact, so you can swap out components easily.

5. Townew Trash Can

Available: Now

This high-tech trash can sense when the garbage is overflowing and seals the bag automatically, reducing odors. Once you remove a bag, another one replaces it.

6. August Wi-Fi Smart Lock

Available: Spring 2020

Smaller and less obtrusive, this new smart lock works with your phone and doesn’t require an extra hub. Instead, it connects directly to your home wireless network.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

7. HP Elite Dragonfly Laptop

Available: February

The major new feature on this laptop is 5G service, which is rolling out nationwide in 2020. It means easier access to the Internet and connected devices.

10 most innovative games of 2019

Innovation comes in all shapes and sizes. With video games, you never know if you’ll be flying into space, controlling a sword-wielding samurai, or shooting three-pointers like you’re Steph Curry. This year, innovation in gaming took a major upswing. In one game, you control a waddling goose, and in another -- you go face-to-face with Darth Vader.

1. “Untitled Goose Game”

Tested on: Nintendo Switch

My top pick of the year, the strange and unusual “Untitled Goose Game” is fun to play but it’s also entertaining to watch someone else play. The intricate puzzles (my favorite involved tricking a farmer) are one thing, but you play as a goose that waddles around. That is unique.

2. “Control”

Tested on: Xbox One

What makes “Control” so innovative is that the story and the gameplay blend together. Even your weapon plays a role as you switch between multiple realities. Graphically, the game uses a mind-bending visual presentation where everything is not as it seems.

3. “Death Stranding”

Tested on: Sony PlayStation 4

The main innovation in “Death Stranding” is that you rarely shoot or kill anything. The missions involve transporting packages and avoiding ghostly enemies. My favorite moment (spoiler alert) happened when I used a ladder left behind by another player.

'I AM JESUS CHRIST' VIDEO GAME CAUSES STIR

4. “Vader Immortal”

Tested on: Oculus Quest

A VR game for the Oculus Quest, “Vader Immortal” is more like a movie than a game, and I was sucked in by the ever-present mythology and detailed story arc. It often feels more like a richly-detailed “Star Wars” book. My ultimate wish fulfillment? Wielding a realistic-looking lightsaber.

5. “Sea of Solitude”

Tested on: Xbox One

“Sea of Solitude” is a deeply personal and detailed game -- you play a monster trying to figure out how you became one. The game sticks in your head for days. It’s about the lingering effects of mental illness and resolving past conflicts. Graphically, it looks like an animated cartoon.

6. “Beat Saber”

Tested on: Oculus Quest

You’ll probably start smiling and laughing when you play the VR game “Beat Saber.” Unlike a first-person shooter or a puzzle game, the goal is to make quick movements in time with the music. It’s incredibly fun but unique in that you have to groove to the music.

10 TOP GADGETS OF 2019

6. “Tom Clancy’s The Division 2”

Tested on: Xbox One

Innovation isn’t always about the gameplay. “Tom Clancy’s The Division 2” is exquisitely detailed, more than any other game I’ve ever played. It recreates an entire world, right down to the debris floating around in the street to the blasted-out buildings.

7. “Yoshi’s Crafted World”

Tested on: Nintendo Switch

I don’t normally include games intended for kids, but “Yoshi’s Crafted World” is wildly original (even for adults). You can flip the screen to see alternative paths in 3D, and the characters look like they are stuffed animals. The game world also looks like it is made of cardboard.

8. “A Plague Tale: Innocence”

Tested on: Windows PC

In “A Plague Tale: Innocence,” you play as a child leading another child -- avoiding enemies and (in one darkly demented scene) avoiding a rat infestation. You feel powerless and the game is often distressing and off-putting, which makes it intensely original.

9. “Minecraft Earth”

Tested on: Apple iPhone

A brilliant new addition to the “Minecraft” canon of games, “Minecraft Earth” uses augmented reality so you can overlay the game board on the physical world and add other human players. I built a sheep farm on a table at the library, adding stone tiles and designing a lush green forest.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

10. “Arise: A Simple Story”

Tested on: Xbox One

Bending time is not a new concept for video games, but somehow “Arise: A Simple Story” makes it seem unique -- mostly because it ties into the emotional, uplifting story about life evaluation. Adjusting time gives you a new route through the level right from the opening scene.

10 most innovative home technologies and gadgets of 2019

Innovation is hard. It takes a keen understanding of the industry and what is going to help customers the most. It requires insight into technology trends and what is possible. And it means pushing an envelope at the risk of confusing customers.

Over the last year, I’ve tested several products that offered brand new and innovative features. These are my top picks.

1. Tempur-pedic Tempur-LuxeBreeze Mattress ($4,499)

The unusual feature on this high-tech mattress is that it stays cool all night, which helps you sleep better. The mattress is eight-degrees cooler than other models, and also absorbs your body heat. It’s like a cradle of softness.

2. iRobot Roomba S9+ Robotic Vacuum ($1,400)

The main innovation with the new S9+ is that it runs forever. Not really, but the vacbot can go back to its base and empty its own contents. You can select a specific area to clean using an app, and the AI learns your room coordinates and improves cleaning over time. My favorite feature? You can use Amazon Alexa to tell the robot to turn off.

3. Oculus Quest VR Headset ($399)

A standalone virtual reality headset -- meaning, it doesn’t require a PC or a phone -- the Oculus Quest is a marvel of engineering. I played the game "Vader Immortal" and thought I was in the same room as the Sith Lord. The audio is also pleasingly loud and realistic. Another surprise is that a new experimental feature can read hand movements -- no controllers needed.

6 GADGETS FOR A MUCH SMARTER SMART HOME

4. Somnox Sleep Robot ($499)

Sometimes "weird" and "innovative" go hand in hand. This sleep robot helps you relax as you adjust your own breathing to the robot’s breathing rhythm. It’s designed to reduce stress but when I tested it, there’s a relaxing feeling of synchronicity -- even for short naps.

5. Samsung Space Monitor ($370)

I’m all for any product that helps me work faster and more efficiently. The Samsung Space Monitor folds back out of the way when not in use so you can reclaim your desk space. When you need to do work, it folds down and stays put in any position. The brilliant part? In my tests, I started using my open desk for reading, journaling, and other tasks.

6. Dyson Lightcycle ($600)

This is no ordinary task lamp. The Dyson Lightcycle automatically adjusts for the time of day, adjusting the color temperature and brightness as it tracks the sun. You can adjust the lamp with a light touch of your finger in any direction. An app helps you tune the light to the task at hand.

7 FITNESS GADGETS TO GET YOU IN SHAPE FOR WINTER

7. Ember Temperature Control Travel Mug 2 ($180)

My favorite gadget of the year and not just because it’s coffee-related, the Travel Mug 2 keeps your coffee (or any liquid such as tea or cocoa) hot for up to three hours -- longer if you use the charging coaster at your desk. Bonus that it’s also a nice-looking travel mug.

8. Fender Acoustasonic Telecaster Guitar ($2,000)

No other musical instrument I’ve tested quite matches the "wow" factor of the Fender Acoustasonic. With the flip of a switch (and a knob), you can emulate the sound of a large-body mahogany guitar or a small body made of spruce. The secret is a new pick-up that faithfully mimics the tonal quality of those woods -- plus a classic Fender Telecaster.

9. IKEA Symfonisk Table Lamp ($179)

Combining a lamp and a speaker is a neat idea, but the IKEA Symfonisk goes a step further -- it’s one of the best-sounding speakers you’ll find with rich, deep tones. And, it’s a bright and stylish lamp at the same time. Setup is painless using the Sonos app.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

10. Polk Legend L800 Speakers ($2,999)

I’m continually amazed at how audio technology has advanced. These high-end speakers use a technology called PRO-SDA to make your music come alive -- they mix the stereo in a way that sounds more realistic and distinct, as though the music was playing live in the room.

10 top gadgets of 2019

As 2019 is winding down and we enter the holiday season, it’s time to look back at the best devices -- the ones that stood out in a crowded field. Some of the top picks are a bit surprising, others won’t be quite as shocking -- all are at the top of the gadget food chain.

1. Oculus Quest ($399)

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with the Oculus Quest, mostly because VR has fallen out of favor. Yet, new games like “Beat Saber” and “Vader Immortal” are outstanding, and the device does not require a high-end computer -- it is all self-contained.

2. Panasonic Lumix S1 Camera ($2,500)

My favorite high-end camera of the year snaps brilliantly clear photos at 24.2-megapixel in full-frame (which means the image is not cropped). The camera shoots in 4K video as well, and the shutter snaps fast photos. A big bonus: You can also take 96-megapixel fine art photos.

3. Apple AirPods Pro ($249)

My top pick for audio gear, the Apple AirPods Pro were a major leap forward in terms of audio fidelity. My music sounded clear and crisp, and the noise-canceling features work as advertised. A nice bonus is that the case can be charged wirelessly using a charging pad.

4. Tie: Google Pixelbook Go Laptop ($649) or the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 Laptop ($1,000)

Laptops come in all shapes and sizes, but the Google Pixelbook Go is slim, trim, and powerful for basic tasks like writing and web browsing. The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is designed for higher-end apps and business users, lasts 17-hours on a charge and has a high-end webcam.

10 USEFUL GADGETS FOR THE MODERN OFFICE

5. Amazon Echo Auto ($35)

A surprise pick, the Amazon Echo Auto is a speakerphone for your car that also adds Amazon Alexa. You can ask the bot to play your favorite album or check the weather. In my tests, the device worked well even with road noise in the background, and it’s easy to install.

6. Garmin Fenix 6x Pro Solar Smartwatch ($1000)

Any smartwatch that lasts 21 days on a charge is worth considering. (Most models like the Apple Watch only last one day.) The Fenix 6x Solar is packed with features, including a heart-rate tracker and even a golf course tracker.

7. Wahoo Fitness KICKR Bike ($3,500)

Does the world need another fitness bike? Absolutely, if it is this high-end. The Wahoo KICKR Bike can adjust the grade of the bike as you ride. The virtual shifting tech can match the gear ratios, the number of gears, and more for the bike you normally use.

8. Apple iPhone 11 Pro ($999)

A surprise hit because of the long-lasting battery (in my tests, sometimes lasting two full days on a charge) and, also, the camera can shoot wide-angle, normal, or zoomed in with a quick screen press. It’s more durable now, too -- especially if you drop one in water.

7 BACK-TO-SCHOOL GADGETS FOR AN EPIC COLLEGE DORM ROOM

9. Tile Slim ($30)

The Tile Slim is thin enough to fit in a wallet, but the big news from 2019 is that the device now lasts for three years and has a wider 200-foot range. I use one to track the location of my wallet and, with the premium service, your phone will chime if someone steals your wallet.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

10. IKEA Symfonisk ($179)

Of all the Wi-Fi speakers I tested this last year, the IKEA Symfonisk was the best one. It sounds sublime, and the bonus is that it is also a lamp for the living room. I liked being able to sync multiple Sonos-powered speakers all around my house, too.

How to spot a hidden webcam

During the holidays, many of us start racking up frequent flyer miles. We’re visiting family and friends, and often booking a low-cost room in an Airbnb. While the joy of opening gifts around the holidays and sharing a meal is hard to beat, finding a hidden webcam is sure to sour the mood.

It might be for security purposes or to prevent theft, but you never know if you have a Peeping Tom. To help, here are a few tips and tricks to give you peace of mind.

1. Turn off the Wi-Fi router and wait for the host to respond

Here’s an interesting trick. Alex Heid from SecurityScorecard told Fox News that many Wi-Fi routers are left out in the open. If you unplug the device, the host will lose the webcam connection and might contact you about losing the connection. It’s a dead giveaway, he says.

AIRBNB GUESTS SUE HOMEOWNER AFTER DISCOVERING 3 HIDDEN CAMERAS IN UNIT, LAWSUIT CLAIMS

2. Use a radio wave signal detector

Amazon sells low-cost Wi-Fi signal detectors like the UNKNOK Bug Detector ($59). It sweeps the room looking for wireless camera signals in the 2.4GHz or 5.0GHz radio band. All wireless signals will show up, but if you find one, you can ask the host to turn off the network.

3. Use the Fing app

A simple (and free) app for your smartphone called Fing will reveal quite a bit. Once connected, you can see which devices are sharing the same wireless network. If you see a webcam, it’s a tip-off that there may be a hidden camera somewhere in the room.

4. Read the reviews

This is a decidedly low-tech option, but it can help. Before you book an Airbnb rental, read the reviews and note whether the previous occupants have found a hidden webcam. Look for anything else suspicious, like a host that snoops around.

5 SECURITY MISTAKES YOU'RE PROBABLY MAKING

5. Find the light

Another good tip for finding a hidden webcam: Follow for the light. At night, turn off all of the lights and darken the windows with blankets if possible. Once the room is pitch black, look for any lights behind wall ornaments, paintings, or a mirror.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

6. Ask the host directly

Sometimes, the best approach to any technical issue is to ask direct questions. When you meet the Airbnb host, ask them point-blank if there is a security camera. The host may be forced to admit they do use a camera or risk lying and being discovered.

7 fitness gadgets to get you in shape for winter

There’s a chill in the air, at least in some parts of the country. That can mean only one thing -- it is time to think about gadgets to help with home workouts. Even though it might be snowing in the Midwest, you can still bike indoors, track your heart rate, and even track how often you drink water. These are the best and most recent fitness gadgets to consider.

1. Fitbit Inspire HR ($100)

Skip the expensive smartwatches that only last a day and get right to your workout. The super skinny Fitbit Inspire HR is the easiest way to check your heart rate and count your steps and calories during a workout. The fitness band lasts five days per charge.

2. Ozmo Active Smart Bottle ($70)

Hydration is so important. It’s a major part of any workout. The Ozmo Active Smart Bottle doesn’t just track sips, it also makes suggestions in the app based on your workouts and activity. It charges up using a USB port on the side.

6 GADGETS FOR A MUCH SMARTER SMART HOME

3. Bose SoundSport Wireless Headphones ($130)

These earbuds are sweat and water-resistant, and they fit snugly in your ears. They come in vibrant colors as well, including light blue and yellow. They last about six hours per charge and come with three sizes for your ears.

4. Polar Ignite Smartwatch ($230)

The bright and colorful display on this workout watch is the main highlight -- it’s easy to see if you’re on a treadmill or rowing machine. If you decide to brave the cold, the Polar Ignite can also track GPS location and provide navigation routes for a run.

10 USEFUL GADGETS FOR THE MODERN OFFICE

5. Fightcamp ($1,219)

One of the most interesting home workout products on the market, Fightcamp includes a free-standing punching bag, boxing gloves, and a workout mat. The app tracks each punch and provides a workout regimen to help you get fit.

6. Wahoo Kickr Bike ($3,500)

This recently-released exercise bike is unlike any other. It’s more like an actual bike in that you can clip in your biking shoes, connect to the Zwift app for virtual routes through the mountains, track your watts and calories, and change speeds using electronic shifters.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

7. Mirror ($1,495)

Another highly unusual but effective fitness device, the Mirror is an actual mirror you attach to the wall, but it also plays live videos of workouts, tracks your heart rate, and even plays surround-sound music to motivate you.

The leaves are falling, and so are the temperatures across much of the U.S. Fortunately, these high-tech gadgets will help you explore your surroundings, stay connected, and keep moving outside in the cold weather this fall. These are the top picks for anyone who wants to go hiking, capture images and video, or keep your gadgets charged up.

1.

5G is a groundbreaking new technology (or is it?)

Anything brand-new always seems wildly exciting.

Cases in point: A new SUV that looks like a pickup truck (called the Jeep Gladiator) or a massive new Samsung 8K Smart QLED television.

However, just because something is new it doesn’t mean it will change your life or alter the tech landscape entirely. One example of this is the new 5G wireless service.

APPLE UNVEILS IPHONE 11, TOUTS $699 MODEL, NEW DESIGNS, ENHANCED BATTERY LIFE

The idea is that 5G will be everywhere — and someday gadgets like your vacuum cleaner or lawn mower might use 5G. It’s often touted as one of the most important milestones in technology and, as Verizon ads suggest, it offers “unprecedented power” for consumers. 5G will be more reliable, faster and pervasive.

Some of the hype is warranted. According to Chase Buckle, the Trends Manager at market research firm GlobalWebIndex, 5G is definitely an important development since it will help more people connect at faster speeds, especially in urban areas.

“5G has many benefits including near real-time communication,” he told Fox News. “This will unlock new potential in the smart home industry under the Internet of Things (IoT), and could set the stage for further developments in self-driving cars thanks to quicker communication speeds allowing for quicker decision-making abilities for cars on the road.”

WHAT IS 5G AND WHY IS IT A BIG DEAL?

However, experts are quick to point out a few caveats.

One example: Buckle said 5G won’t be immediately available for most users. If you live in a rural area, it could be many months or years before 5G finally reaches you.

Consumer analyst Rob Enderle noted that 5G will be groundbreaking for those in urban areas, although the “gotcha” is already well-known: It won’t work as well inside office buildings. He said the recently approved Wi-Fi 6 standard is designed to alleviate that problem.

5G IS A BIGGER DEAL AND CHINA IS A BIGGER THREAT THAN YOU THINK, THINK TANK SAYS

According to IT analyst Charles King, of Pund-IT, some of the claims have been overblown, pointing out an OpenSignal study found that 5GE, a version of 5G, was no faster than 4G LTE.

GWS conducted a speed test for all carriers and found that AT&T did have the fastest network. AT&T has disputed the Open Signal study as being inconclusive.

BEST SMART WATCH, 5G FEARS, DATA BREACH ACTION PLANS, AND MORE: TECH Q&A

King also suggested that 5G costs could be an issue — possibly a $10 per month added charge. Recently, T-Mobile started a campaign against Verizon called VerHIDEzon that suggests 5G is only available in some areas, e.g., in densely urban areas.

“5G won’t be life-changing unless you are deeply into entertainment or gaming,” says King.

A Verizon spokesperson told Fox News that 5G will improve 4K movie streaming, video chats in HD, multiplayer gaming on mobile and provide near-instant downloads.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

Buckle said there is consumer interest in 5G, but perhaps not at an extreme level.

According to his firm GlobalWebIndex, about 25 percent of people age 16 to 64 think 5G will be an important, groundbreaking technology and they are considering an upgrade. That’s much higher than a study in the U.K., where only about 10 percent of those surveyed say it’s important.

To Enderle one thing is clear: It’s too soon to know if 5G will be life-changing. There are many enhancements, some worth the cost, but not everyone will benefit right away, he said.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the iPhone 11 has 5G capability.

Is Google doing enough to protect kids from disturbing YouTube videos?

“Paw Patrol” is all the rage with kids.

They know how to type those two little words into YouTube and find a boatload of free, funny videos. Most of them are age-appropriate, but a few years ago, a video showed fake characters drawn to look similar to those in “Paw Patrol” committing suicide. The video is no longer available, but it proved one thing:

The Internet is a free-for-all, and disturbing YouTube content is not hard to find.

GOOGLE WOES: ANTITRUST CONCERNS, YOUTUBE FINE AND CORPORATE CULTURE CLASHES KEEP TECH GIANT ON THE HOT SEAT

In a cursory search, you can find videos showing people chasing one another with chain saws and horrifying car accidents. In 2015, the Google-owned service released the YouTube Kids app for iPhone and Android, but some experts say “age-gating” and filtering content is not enough.

“It is not a matter of if it is a matter of when a child dies because of something they see on YouTube,” says Brenda Bisner, the senior vice president of content at Kidoodle TV.

“In the worst cases, small children may have accidentally streamed pornography, bestiality, extremely violent and terrifying content, drug use and/or just weird stuff,” adds Leilani Carver, Ph.D., a professor at Maryville University who teaches strategic communication. “Most of these things were not initially posted on YouTube Kids but slipped through the filters.”

Google, however, told Fox News that bestiality was never found on YouTube.

GOOGLE HITS BACK AT CRITICS AMID ANTITRUST INVESTIGATIONS

Dr. Carver told Fox News that the landing page for YouTube Kids includes an explanation about content filtering -- it’s partly automated with bots, partly controlled by humans, and partly depends on users flagging inappropriate content.

The question is whether that’s really enough.

“Even if I watch with my child, I do not know the video is disturbing until we have watched it together (unless I screen everything that my child watches, which is often not practical),” says Carver. “Once something horrible has been seen by a child, it cannot be unseen.”

YOUTUBE TO PAY MASSIVE $170M FINE AS IT SETTLES CLAIMS IT VIOLATED CHILDREN'S PRIVACY LAWS

Bisner notes how the terms of service for YouTube clearly state the obvious -- the videos are not intended for anyone under 13. Whether it’s YouTube or YouTube Kids, the policy of flagging or blocking content is (mostly) fine for the free-for-all on Twitter or Reddit, but all of the experts say the issue is that kids tend to watch more YouTube than any other video service.

And, Carver says about 500 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. No one can possibly police that many videos, so the call to action is for Google and YouTube to monitor videos much more closely and ensure child safety, especially on the YouTube Kids app.

Susan Merrill, the Digital Media Director of Family First, says another solution is for parents to become much more aware of which content is available and to monitor apps and services more closely. Some parents are not fluent in technology, she says, and they even rely on their kids to teach them how a new app works, but that’s asking for trouble.

YOUTUBE REMOVED 17,000 CHANNELS, 500 MILLION COMMENTS UNDER NEW HATEFUL CONDUCT POLICY

“The average parent of a 10-year-old today did not have YouTube as a child,” says Merrill, speaking to Fox News. “The parents underestimate children (and trust the Internet) and think they aren't able to access content that they can easily.”

She says “full immersion” into the lives of our kids will help. Knowing what they are doing, coming alongside them and watching content together -- that’s the key.

“Most parents hesitate to use parental controls because their kids get angry with them,” she says. “If we love our children with the future in mind we will protect them fearlessly.”

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

“We were unable to find the videos described on YouTube Kids, our standalone app for kids to more safely explore their interests," said YouTube spokesperson Ivy Choi, in a statement emailed to Fox News. "Sometimes, content on YouTube’s main experience that don’t violate our policies may not be appropriate for all audiences. We have built in policies and protections to age-restrict or remove mature content that explicitly targets minors and families. As a reminder, YouTube has never been for people under 13 and we terminate thousands of these accounts per week.”

7 back-to-school gadgets to help you focus

When school starts, it still feels like summer. These gadgets will combat the transition back to full-day classes in high school or college when the weather is still distracting. Jot down notes on a laptop, avoid cable clutter, and use an endless notepad to stay focused.

1. Inspiron 13 7390 2-in-1 ($1,200)

Let a little digital ink help you stay on task this fall. The Dell Inspiron 13 7390 lets you jot down notes in class using a stylus -- the screen has 1,048 levels of pressure pen sensitivity. The touch-enabled laptop folds into a “tent” so you can lean back and focus on the teacher.

2. Nomad Universal Kevlar Cable ($40)

Can a phone cable help you focus? Yes, if it has three connectors.
7 back-to-school gadgets for an epic college dorm room

College starts up for students this month, which means only one thing: it’s time to plan out the ultimate dorm room. For those who want the latest and the best accessories and gadgets, we’ve assembled the primo gear to impress roommates, your RA, and anyone else in your hall.

1. Nanoleaf Canvas ($100)

You might create a scene with these lighted panels. Once you install them on the wall of a dorm room, you can touch a panel to trigger animated lighting. Turn them up bright for extra room lighting, or subdued during a long gaming session with your roomies.

2. Craftsynth 2.0 ($149)

A quirky music creation device like this is just what you need for a study break. Small and light enough to carry in a backpack, the Craftsynth 2.0 creates 40 different waveforms and doesn’t require any piano skills. It’s like your own personal Radiohead machine.

FIVE BEST SMARTPHONE BUYS FOR SUMMER 2019

3. Symfonisk Table Lamp with Wi-Fi Speakers ($179)

Combining two dorm room products into one, this lamp is also a speaker that connects to Wi-Fi. Sound quality is spectacular, and you can even pair with a second unit for stereo sound. You can stream music using services like iTunes or Spotify.

4. Epson EcoTank ET-2760 Supertank Printer ($300)

Every dorm room needs a printer that won’t run out of ink constantly. The big benefit is cost. Epson says each color print ends up costing about one cent, versus normal printers that cost 20 cents per print. Ready for a refill? Skip the cartridges altogether and use ink refills.

SAMSUNG UNVEILS NEW GALAXY NOTE 10 PHONES

5. HyperX Cloud MIX Wired Gaming Headset ($200)

This headset is ideal for any music, gaming, or even listening to audiobooks or college lectures. At your desk, the wired headset has a microphone and plays high-res audio. For your phone or tablet, you can connect over Bluetooth without any wires.

6. Samsung 65" Q90 Flat Smart 4K QLED TV ($2,798)

Let’s skip right to the good stuff on this massive television. It has 4K resolution, which means Netflix will pop even more. For gaming, you can expect a wider range of colors than a bargain television. Backlighting tech, excellent side viewing angles -- it’s a dorm room wonder.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

7. Nikon Z 7 Mirrorless Camera ($3,000)

This “ultimate” camera is for media and film majors only. Keep one in your dorm under lock and key, but expect brilliant results thanks to the full-frame sensor (capture more of the image), incredible quality thanks to the 45.7-megapixel quality, and lightweight and compact design.

Increased screen time can cause development problems in kids, experts warn

You might want to talk to your kids about this one.

Recently, the World Health Organization strongly discouraged parents from letting kids under 2 use any gadget, while kids over 2 should only spend an hour per day on screens.

A survey of 500,000 teens in 2017 found that a rising number of teens suffered from depression due to increased use of their phones and tablets. This “screen time” had a worse impact on females, according to the researchers at the University of Michigan and the CDC.

5 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR CHILD ONLINE

Clearly, screen time is impacting the development of both kids and teens.

Dr. Pamela Hurst-Della Pietra, a well-known child development expert and founder of the interdisciplinary research organization Children and Screens, told Fox News there has been a 28 percent increase in psychiatric emergency department visits related to suicide attempts since 2011 -- the CDC said suicide rates are up 30 percent "in more than half of U.S. states" since 1999.

“We’re not saying we have found causality at the moment, but it’s concerning enough that we need more research,” Hurst-Della Pietra said. “There’s cognitive effects [with screen time], including retention in learning, memory, impulsivity, and possible academic performance.”

FACEBOOK LET THOUSANDS OF KIDS JOIN CHATS WITH UNAUTHORIZED USERS

Dr. Gayani DeSilva, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, agrees. She told Fox News that kids need time to develop properly in their younger years; excess screen time discourages that.

“Brains of children grow rapidly and in response to their experiences and environment,” DeSilva said. “Their brains also cannot differentiate between reality and make-believe. Therefore, children’s brains react to blue screens and develop systems in response to their experiences as though whatever they do with their phone or tablet was reality.”

This is particularly true with video games, she said. With younger kids, when they fall to the grass in a game, kids only experience the visual stimulus. They don’t experience the sound, the feeling, or the pain of falling -- and they don’t experience the loss of balance.

40 PERCENT OF CHILDREN HAVE CONNECTED WITH A STRANGER ONLINE, SHOCKING SURVEY REVEALS

“Kids lose out on developing many parts of their brain and body when they are on tablets and phones,” DeSilva said. Indeed, Dr. Hurst-Della Pietra pointed to a 2018 study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that teens age 13 to 18 now experience increased anxiety.

Experts say for teens the issue has to do with constant comparison, so it’s not just a development issue or a problem perceiving reality correctly. Hurst-Della Pietra said teens using social media on their phones are constantly comparing themselves to others.

Dr. Nerissa Bauer, a medical advisor for YourDoctors.Online, told Fox News the issue with screen time has to do with replacing healthy habits. Kids and teens who are on their phones are not outside enjoying the summer weather, exercising, or spending time with other kids.

“Parents of children 18 months to 24 months can introduce digital media but they should choose high-quality educational programming and watch the programming with their child to be able to provide running commentary and answer children’s questions,” she said.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

The research and statistics tell an obvious story: Screen time impacts child development. The experts agree on that -- now it’s time for parents to make some hard choices.

10 useful gadgets for the modern office

I’m always on the look-out for the best office gear. One reason it’s so important to me is that it helps with my productivity. A trendy look, a sleek design--they impact how I work on a daily basis. Studies show that working in a clean, organized environment will even improve your mood. Recently, I tested out some of the latest office products to see how they impacted my daily routine. Here are the top picks from several weeks of testing.

1. OttLite Command Desk Lamp ($105)

The key feature on this desk lamp is that the light imitates actual sunlight, which is easier on the eyes and reduces strain throughout the day. If you don’t quite like the color temp, you can use Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant to change it by voice (or turn the light on and off).

Biggest impact: My office felt more like working on a sunny day, even at night.

2. Teknion Navigate Desk ($945)

Priced about right for a startup or home office worker, the Teknion Navigate uses counter-balancing as you raise and lower the desk to a sit/stand position. It’s heavy enough to stay put on carpet or wood flooring and has a clean, modern look.

Biggest impact: I moved around and stood up more, which helped fuel new insights.

3. Grovemade Desk Accessories

I tested several hand-made Grovemade accessories, including a pen holder made of maple that is hand-sanded and finished, a desk shelf (which I used with the AirPulse speakers), and a leather mouse pad that didn’t slip or slide for my mouse--adding a maker aesthetic to my office.

Biggest impact: The more organic and wooden “maker” look inspired me throughout the day.

GADGETS FOR A MUCH SMARTER SMART HOME

4. Sonneman Quattro Task Lamp ($218)

Having an extra task lamp on my desk helped with editing chores on printed paper, signing documents, and taking notes. Lighting boosts productivity, and this lamp was easy to adjust on the fly and stayed put when I needed to get back to typing.

Biggest impact: My eyes didn’t strain as much and I took notes more often.

5. AirPulse A100 ($800)

I have not tested speakers at my desk that sounded quite as pristine as the AirPulse A100. It’s partly the design of the aluminum materials, the high-res audio certification, and the warm, rich bass. You can connect with Bluetooth, USB, 3.5mm or normal RCA cables.

Biggest impact: I enjoyed some of my favorite “productivity-boosting” artists even more.

6. Jura Platinum X8 ($3,499)

This coffee machine is as high-tech as it gets for the modern office. You can use the control pad to configure two different drinks to brew simultaneously. For hot water, you can set the desired temperature. I was impressed with how quickly the machine brews a fine black blend.

Biggest impact: Faster coffee with several brewing options.

FIVE BEST SMARTPHONE BUYS FOR SUMMER 2019

7. Logitech Premium Collection ($320)

This bundle of high-end accessories--including a mouse, keyboard, and speakers--is meant to bump up your productivity. The programmable keyboard is thin enough for any workspace; the speakers sync by Bluetooth with a quick tap on the front display.

Biggest impact: The mouse is ultra-precise so less hunting and pecking.

8. IKEA Idasen Cabinet ($249)

This cabinet for storing valuables in your office uses a smart lock system. There’s one cabinet that has a lock, but you can add locks for the other cabinets. Each cabinet has a damper, which means they close silently. The metal material means you can add magnets or pins.

Biggest impact: More secure storage in an office where people poke around too much.

9. Poppin Black Take Note Coffee Table ($474)

I love this small coffee table with a large memo pad built right-in. It’s designed for a personal office or a working area you share. The pad includes 100 sheets but you can order refills. The add-on legs raise the height of the table for the optimal writing level.

Biggest impact: A quirky table that will encourage brainstorming and collaboration.

SAMSUNG UNVEILS NEW GALAXY NOTE 10 PHONES

10. Tune coworkers out so you can focus on Google Docs with these premium grade headphones. The wood and leather materials make them comfortable and unique, but the sound is second to none.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

Biggest impact: Panic at the Disco never sounded so good.

7 cool gadgets for summer fun

Summer is already in full force, and that means it’s time to head out to the beach, take a long bike ride, or explore the great outdoors. These gadgets offer something special and unique to make your excursions more enjoyable, and most are 100 percent beach ready.

1. JBL Endurance Peak Earbuds ($120)

The term “fully waterproof” doesn’t usually apply to earbuds. They are often too light and delicate for use in the water. The JBL Endurance Peak are swim-ready and stay secure in your ear, and they last four hours per charge (with five more charge-up using the included case).

2. GoSun Chill Cooler ($579)

One of the most interesting products of the summer, this cooler lets you skip the ice. Battery powered to last all day, it can also keep charging using solar panels. If you need to charge your phone, the USB port provides enough juice for ten charge-ups.

5 CRAZY AI-POWERED GADGETS THAT THINK FOR YOU

3. Gocycle GS Electric Bike ($2,799)

Most electric bikes are so heavy you can barely lift them into your car or onto a bike rack. The Gocycle GS only weighs 36 pounds and folds up like a suitcase. It lasts for 40 miles per charge, and doesn’t look as goofy as some fold-up bikes -- it’s more like a trendy BMX bike.

4. Withings Move Smartwatch ($70)

Many smartwatches last only a day or two, but the Withings Move is different. It’s designed to track your steps, sleep, laps in a pool, and more. The screen shows the time and your activity, but the included app provides more detail like a daily sleep score. Lasts 18 months per charge.

6 GADGETS FOR A MUCH SMARTER SMART HOME

5. Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 Speaker ($100)

The sound emanating from this small waterproof speaker is astounding. There’s a deep bass sound for grunge rock and clear highs for a dance mix. Plus, the speaker floats in the water, lasts 13 hours on a charge, and can be paired with a second model for room-filling music.

6. Garmin Edge 530 Bike Computer ($300)

A favorite for bike commuters and outdoor riders, the Garmin Edge 530 clips to the handlebar and provides a quick summary of distance, speed, and current route. A big bonus is that it lasts for 20 hours per charge, and of course it is fully waterproof.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

7. DJI Osmo Action Camera ($349)

Fully waterproof for serious outdoor excursions, this 4K video and photo action camera is one of the best you’ll find. For starters, it is waterproof up to 11 meters. The 8X slow motion mode rivals what you can do on some high-end video cameras. Weighs little over four ounces.

Remote Indian reservation near the Grand Canyon gets broadband boost

Rural Americans are often overlooked in terms of technological innovations. They will be among the last to receive faster 5G cell phone coverage, even though it is now available in major cities. In some rural areas, acquiring an HD television signal is next to impossible.

Yet, for Native Americans living in remote tribal communities, even connecting to high-speed Internet is a struggle, relying instead on archaic dial-up connections.

One study by the American Indian Policy Institute found that about a third of all Native Americans lack broadband access. A study by the U.S. Government Accountability Office disputes that claim, suggesting that access in tribal areas is much worse than that.

RURAL AMERICA STILL STRUGGLING FOR ACCESS TO HIGH-SPEED INTERNET SERVICE

Ophelia Watahomigie-Corliss represents the Havasupai tribe near the Grand Canyon, one of the smallest rural communities in the U.S. She tells Fox News the biggest challenge has to do with kids receiving an education, which is harder without broadband.

“[Our schools] only go up to eighth grade and the only option for high school is to move out of the canyon to earn their diploma [due to lack of the Internet],” says Watahomigie-Corliss.

That might change now that the FCC has ruled that some spectrum, known as Educational Broadband Service or EBS, will be dedicated specifically to the Havasupai tribe. The FCC is expected to make a general ruling about spectrum allocation for all tribal areas next month.

AMAZON PLANS TO OFFER SATELLITE-POWERED INTERNET

Even then, there is an issue of installing broadband equipment.

Martin Casado, a general partner at venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, is also the founder of the non-profit company MuralNet, which is helping bring broadband to tribal areas. He tells Fox News that the problem is corporate greed. Telecom companies refuse to install the base stations and backhaul locations necessary to make it all work in rural communities.

“Telecoms won’t do this unless you have enough of a population,” he says. “And they don’t know how to make it financially solvent. In Africa, you might not have the basics like electricity, but in the United States we have the infrastructure all in place to make this happen.”

NEW SATELLITES COULD SAVE AMERICANS $30B ON MONTHLY INTERNET BILLS, REPORT SAYS

Casado says MuralNet uses low-cost networking equipment that is then re-programmed with their software. The installs help make broadband access more affordable and viable for rural areas. The company piggybacks on the EBS rulings to provide broadband to tribal residents.

Watahomigie-Corliss says there’s another issue. Some initiatives, such as online school and telemedicine, depend on high-speed Internet. She’s thankful the spectrum is now allocated, but the process of rolling out services that rely on broadband will take time.

Gary Bolton, a spokesperson for the networking company ADTRAN, tells Fox News that there are additional complications. In rural areas, the terrain, which could include mountains or remote farmland -- is more complex and requires more technical planning. “About 19 million Americans are on the losing side of the digital divide,” he says.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

In the end, it’s not always easy to provide access to technology and it’s not always lucrative for the telecoms, but for tribal communities in remote areas, it’s an imperative.

5 crazy AI-powered gadgets that think for you

In case you haven’t been paying attention, gadgets with artificial intelligence are getting even smarter. Feel free to panic about “Terminator”-style robots taking over the world, but for now, these gadgets save us time by thinking for us. Some are so smart they trick a criminal into looking at a security camera; another senses how much detergent you need for your dirty clothes.

1. Vivint Outdoor Camera Pro

My favorite gadget of the year so far, the Vivint Outdoor Camera Pro can sense when someone is on your property. It will then play a whistle sound and snap a picture when the intruder looks at the camera. Brilliant. You can customize the sounds and how often the camera snaps pics.

2. Whirlpool Smart Front Load Washer

Finally, a washing machine that knows how much detergent you need! With a fill capacity for up to 40 loads, the Whirlpool Smart Front Load Washer automatically senses load size. Called Load & Go, it’s curiously omniscient. There’s also a matching dryer.

7 COOL TRAVEL GADGETS FOR YOUR NEXT TRIP

3. Lenovo Smart Clock

This Google-powered clock knows how to wake you up gradually. Connected to the lights in your home, the alarm clock can slowly increase the volume and lights as you wake up over a 30-minute period. The Google Assistant can even read the news.

4. Ring Door View Cam

You know a gadget is thinking for you when it can predict human behavior. The Ring Door View Cam is smart enough to know when someone knocks at the door instead of using the doorbell. A sensor detects the knock and alerts you. You’ll be able to see the visitor and respond.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

5. That’s the idea behind this stationary bike, which guides you through a short workout and adjusts tension automatically. All you have to do is pedal since the bike knows when to ease up or make you push harder.

Facebook now used for Dark Web activity

Over two billion people use Facebook to buy and sell goods, chat with each other, and post vacation pictures. Now, according to a new report by Talos Intelligence, the social network is being harnessed by Dark Web cybercriminals as a place to sell credit card information, illegal contraband, and much more.

What’s even more surprising, according to experts, is that this Dark Web activity isn’t that dark or hard to find -- criminals sell credit cards right out in the open. One quick search for a term like “carding” (a criminal term for selling credit cards) reveals dozens of Facebook Groups.

While Facebook is constantly trying to shut down these groups, they keep popping up.

YOUR PERSONAL DATA MAY BE ON THE DARK WEB: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

One example: Talos posted screenshots of credit card numbers, complete with matching photo identification and the CVV code, available for as little as $25 each (all obscured to protect identities). While illegal, the sellers are hard to track down since they use false identities.

"Cybercriminals are fairly brazen due to non-extradition policies and trying to monetize their malicious activities,” said Byron Rashed, a spokesperson for security firm Centripetal Networks. “Many are very good at hiding their location, real identity, and covering their tracks."

Facebook told Fox News that it has clamped down against the groups. “These Groups violated our policies against spam and financial fraud and we removed them," explained a spokeswoman, via email. "We know we need to be more vigilant and we're investing heavily to fight this type of activity.”

EXPERTS TRACK PERSONAL DATA’S MURKY JOURNEY AROUND THE DARK WEB

According to Emily Wilson, the VP of Research at security company Terbium Labs, the groups tend to proliferate quickly and the massive social network can’t keep pace.

“Facebook has clearly made some decisions on resource allocation for shutting down these groups and cybercrime seems relatively low on Facebook's priority list,” she said. “Fraud -- whether account takeover, payment card fraud, phishing schemes, you name it -- is unduly relegated to the bottom of everyone's list, and these criminal groups know that.”

Laurence Pitt, security strategy director at Juniper Networks, told Fox News the Facebook Group activity does protect one group of users -- the criminals posting the items for sale.

HACKER LOOKS TO SELL 655,000 ALLEGED PATIENT HEALTHCARE RECORDS ON THE DARK WEB

“No one wants to receive a message from their Dark Web messenger, but a Facebook or Twitter notification is both common and innocent in its look, but not in its meaning,” he said. Accessing the Dark Web is also complex, requiring the use of multiple virtual private networks, complex logins, and bypassing a myriad of security certificates. Facebook is fast and easy.

As the experts all noted, the real reason criminals use Facebook Groups is that they want to reach the masses, and the masses use Facebook. By posting in a group and listing their items for sale, with pictures and details about what’s available, the criminals attract a much larger audience who are more likely to join the group, simply by doing a quick search.

The question is what to do about it.

Wilson from Terbium Labs said one key is for the tech giants like Facebook and other social media companies like Twitter to make crime-prevention a bigger priority. She added that new legislation governing Dark Web infiltration on social media is also paramount.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

For the everyday consumer posting selfies and looking for a new sofa, the answer is more education about how to spot illegal activity -- and report what you see.
