MORNING GLORY: DSA Democrats' radical plan to reshape America starts with the Supreme Court

In 1863, as the Civil War raged and its result was not yet certain, Congress for the first time raised the number of justices on the Supreme Court to 10. The Tenth Circuit Act was approved on March 3, 1863. This was done in large part to allow Abraham Lincoln to nominate a strong Unionist justice to the Court, Stephen J. Field, on March 6, 1863. Field was confirmed on March 10, after Congress created a new Supreme Court seat.

Three years later, after the Union’s triumph in the war, the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and the beginning of a long, drawn-out era of Reconstruction, Congress passed a bill on July 23, 1866, that reduced the number of justices to seven through attrition and barred the filling of vacancies until that number was reached. This was done to prevent President Andrew Johnson from making any nominations to fill Supreme Court vacancies.

Just prior to this statute’s passage, Congress had passed the Fourteenth Amendment on June 13, 1866, and formally transmitted it to the states for ratification on June 16, 1866. Ratification was not certain, nor was the defeat of Johnson in 1868. While the proposed Fourteenth Amendment was silent on the number of justices on the Supreme Court, the amendment explicitly guaranteed the citizens of the United States the right to "due process of law," along with unenumerated privileges or immunities and the equal protection of the laws. The language of the amendment’s first section concludes: "No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

The original Constitution had been silent as to the number of justices on the Supreme Court, but from 1866 to 1869, a combination of three statutes and one amendment put a constitutional imprimatur on the number of nine. The Fourteenth Amendment was ratified on July 9, 1868, by the necessary number of states, and Secretary of State William Seward formally proclaimed the Fourteenth Amendment as part of the Constitution on July 28, 1868.

On March 2, 1867, while the new amendment was pending ratification or rejection, Congress passed a Reconstruction Act that obliged any state in the defeated Confederacy to ratify the Fourteenth Amendment before that state’s representatives could be admitted to Congress.

Less than a year after ratification and certification of the Fourteenth Amendment, Congress completed the work of the Reconstruction Era with regard to the Supreme Court with the passage of the Judiciary Act of 1869.

That act first passed in March 1869, but outgoing President Johnson pocket-vetoed the bill. Congress promptly passed it again, and the new President, Ulysses S. Grant, promptly signed it. That law completed the work of the Fourteenth Amendment and fixed the Supreme Court at nine members, where it has remained for 157 years.

There is an excellent argument that this sequence of events over three post-war years—a proposed amendment passing Congress, then a statute tying the hands of Johnson, then a statute requiring ratification as a precondition of admission to the Union, followed by ratification of the amendment and then the final statute on the makeup of the Supreme Court—embedded the number of nine justices implicitly in the notion of the "due process" of law language of the Fourteenth Amendment, and that this reading was confirmed by the rapid move to make that number nine explicit after ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Certainly, the refusal of overwhelming Democratic majorities in Congress in 1937 and 1938 to endorse President Franklin Roosevelt’s attempt to "pack the Court" fortifies the view that the Supreme Court’s number of nine justices is very much part of the "due process" of law in the United States and cannot be changed from nine except by a constitutional amendment.

Last week, the House GOP majority put forward a constitutional amendment (H.J. Res. 8) to explicitly fix the Supreme Court at nine members. The proposal failed to reach the required two-thirds majority in a 212–206 vote. House Republicans voted overwhelmingly in favor, while Democrats voted 1–205 against it, with Rep. Don Davis, D-N.C., as the lone Democrat supporting the measure. Independent Rep. Kevin Kiley, who caucuses with Republicans, voted against it, while 15 members did not vote.

Democrats fear they cannot win and hold the presidency long enough to allow for the nomination and confirmation of enough new justices for the gradual evolution of American constitutional law to reflect their distinctly minority views on what the Constitution requires on a score of issues.

Achieving a significant course change in American constitutional law requires enormous patience and wisdom over the decades it takes to see vacancies arise and new justices confirmed. "Originalists"—known in a previous era as "strict constructionists" and more commonly as "old-fashioned judges"—were shocked by the 1973 radical decision in Roe v. Wade, to cite just one example, but they were obliged to wait nearly a half-century until the Dobbs decision in 2022 to see the disfiguring jurisprudence hatched by Roe repudiated.

The terrible decision in the 1978 case Regents of the University of California v. Bakke launched affirmative action in admissions at colleges and universities, an unconstitutional experiment that did not meet its long-overdue demise until the 2023 decisions in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. University of North Carolina.

When the Court heads down the wrong path, it can take decades to course-correct back to the Constitution’s design.

And the waiting can be extremely frustrating.

After President Reagan and President George H.W. Bush made a combined three appointments to the Court, originalists expected the repudiation of Roe in 1992 in the case of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey, but the three Supreme Triumvirs of the time—Justices Anthony Kennedy, Sandra Day O’Connor and David Souter—conjured up a replacement theory, gutted Roe and replaced it with a wholly new and novel theory of abortion "rights" without explicitly overturning Roe. Three more decades of bad law followed until Dobbs returned the regulation of abortion to the states, where it has been the subject of ongoing debate, legislation and referenda. Abortion remains widely available in the United States today, though not everywhere or on demand in most states. That’s federalism at work, and it does indeed work.

Those who longed for a return of the Court to its pre-Roe humility concerning its own role on every controversial issue did not, however, think of "packing the Court" as a means to their ends, as that is a step that is not just too radical and unthinkable—it is also unconstitutional.

This past "summer of the DSA" and the rise of far-left Twitch streamer Hasan Piker have communicated to even long-serving Democratic members of the House of Representatives that its activist base is gripped by a fever of anti-American rage unseen in that party since secession gripped the Democrats in December 1860. Like the pro-slavery Democrats of antebellum America, the Democrats of today would rather wreck the Constitution than abide by it.

The proposal to change all the laws of the United States by suddenly injecting hard-left judicial "philosophy" into a supermajority of new justices to the left of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson ought to scare every American who believes in the rule of law. Every established precedent in every area of law would be out the door if that change ever occurs. Eight individuals—five new radical justices plus Justices Brown Jackson, Sonia Sotomayor and Kagan—would effectively and immediately rule the United States. The left’s longed-for "revolution" would arrive.

Suddenly. Irreversibly. And that is what the DSA left and the Democratic Party it has cowed demands.

A statute approving the expansion of the Court is unconstitutional. It violates the guarantee of due process of law in the Fourteenth Amendment, substituting in its place an endless roller coaster of judicial revolution and counter-revolution via an accordion Supreme Court that just expands and never contracts. There is no end in sight on this road to the radicals’ ruin of the rule of law.

The House GOP would perhaps have been better served by forcing a vote on the constitutionality of such a statute. Over the past weekend, the Manhattan Institute's James Piereson took to the Wall Street Journal to argue in an op-ed that "there are good reasons to think such a law would be unconstitutional, in that it would undermine the separation of powers and the independence of the judiciary."

Piereson is right that the "history of court expansion in the 19th century provides no support for the Democrats’ plan, nor does the language of the founders in their commentary on the Constitution or FDR’s ill-fated experiment with court packing." He could have gone further, and others will, to explain how the "due process" guaranteed every American by the Fourteenth Amendment is incompatible with expansion of the Court beyond nine, as provided for in the post-14th Amendment Judiciary Act of 1869.

Democrats cannot use transient majorities and rule changes in the Senate to gain the authority to undo the Constitution remade anew in 1868. Americans love their country and their freedoms. They do not want the radical makeover proposed by the DSA and now acquiesced in by the 2026 Democrats.

Republicans put the issue front and center last week. It should remain there throughout the fall and all of the 2028 campaign. The DSA Democrats "hate" the Constitution. The GOP is right to defend it.

In the year since we lost Charlie Kirk, the media has done its best to act its worst

It has already been a year since conservative icon Charlie Kirk was assassinated and the attack has brought out the worst in some of the worst people in our media and celebrity culture. False claims that the alleged assassin was conservative, false quotes and hateful comments have filled TV, radio and, of course, the internet.

The world was scarred from the moment of the attack. Unedited video soon surfaced on social media and who knows how many watched someone they loved or admired get fatally shot. Instead of an outpouring of sympathy, we were transfixed by an endless parade of hate for Charlie, his widow Erika, conservatives and more.

The hate came from all corners of the media and political world, including many names you know — then-MSNBC analyst Matthew Dowd, far-left podcaster Hassan Piker, multiple staffers at The Washington Post, longtime broadcaster Katie Couric and, of course, late night host Jimmy Kimmel. Because if there’s something foul to say, Kimmel can’t be far from that gutter. Much of the commentary is so venomous or vomitous that I won’t dignify it by repeating what was said. Vile grifters have made mountains of cash attacking a grieving widow and I refuse to help them do it.

The left and media moved on quickly from the assassination to character assassination of the victim. Charlie Kirk was bashed as "hateful," "bigoted," a "hatemonger" and a "prominent Christian nationalist" who "has been known to make racist statements." Even major news outlets fired or suspended some of those who bashed Kirk. But broadcast outlets did their best to hide the obvious connection between the alleged shooter and the left’s obsession that everyone on the right is "fascist."

Kimmel was sidelined briefly for falsely claiming, "We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it." Kimmel later said his words were, "intentionally and, I think, maliciously mischaracterized."

The media, of course, supported him. MSNBC host Chris Hayes called the suspension, "the most straightforward attack on free speech from state actors I've ever seen in my life and it's not even close." CNN media analyst Brian Stelter criticized the move, saying, "America is a less free place if late-night comedians cannot do or say what they want."

CNN’s Jake Tapper headed up an hour-long special called "No Laughing Matter: Free Speech Under Attack" like ABC had done something wrong. As Tapper put it, "Less than 24 hours after Jimmy Kimmel was suspended, the tight-knit fraternity of late-night hosts rallied around their comedic brother."

MSNBC’s Matthew Dowd lost his job for bashing Charlie Kirk saying, "he’s been one of the most divisive, especially divisive, younger figures in this who has constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups and I always go back to hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions." Dowd later blamed "The Right Wing media mob" for his firing. Of course.

Longtime broadcaster Katie Couric blamed the victim. "I think some people might say Charlie Kirk's rhetoric was extreme." She added that some were "suggesting that these kinds of words lead to violence."

Both major liberal newspapers joined in. Washington Post fashion reporter Ashley Fetters Maloy went after Erika Kirk for the clothes she was wearing and even her parenting under the headline: "Erika Kirk is walking a fine line in a glittering pantsuit." Maloy went on to raise two pathetic Post questions: "While you’re on this publicity tour, who’s parenting your kids? and Why is that suit so sparkly?" Making light of widows coping with loss is unsurprising for feminist journalists. As Erika commented, "If you are now attacking a widow's attire, like, that's where we're at."

The Post was also ordered to reinstate bitter columnist Karen Attiah after she was fired last year for "gross misconduct" over social media posts she made after the assassination. "Refusing to tear my clothes and smear ashes on my face in performative mourning for a White man that espoused violence is … not the same as violence," Attiah wrote.

New York Times correspondent and 1619 Project author Nikole Hannah-Jones took a similar view, criticizing efforts "not just to condemn his killing and political violence, but to venerate him." She wrote this under a subhead whining about, "the mainstreaming of formerly extremist views." The paper also falsely accused Charlie of being antisemitic when, in reality, he was "quoting a statement from a post on social media and went on to critique it. It was not his own statement." The paper of record. Ugh.

The lefty Atlantic actually wrote that "MAGA has found its George Floyd." Except of course that Charlie was an upstanding citizen and the right didn’t riot afterward.

PETE DAVIDSON SPARKS BACKLASH AFTER EXPLICIT JOKE ABOUT SLAIN CHARLIE KIRK DURING NETFLIX ROAST

Hollywood didn’t want to miss out on the hate fest. Former "Mean Girls" actress Amanda Seyfried called Charlie "hateful" and then flipped out because she got pushback. "I'm not f---ing apologizing for that," Seyfried later said.

"Comedian" Pete Davidson made a disgusting gay joke about Charlie Kirk during Netflix’s "The Roast of Kevin Hart." But if you pay for Netflix, that’s the kind of high-class content you are supporting. Former "Daily Show" host Trevor Noah couldn’t get past how pro-Second Amendment Kirk "was shot while defending guns." He called it, "an incongruous funny thing that happens." "You are there. You're onstage, like, ‘Let me tell you why people should have guns.’ Wa-pow!" That’s the neutral individual who hosted the White House Correspondents' Dinner a couple years ago.

HASAN PIKER SINGS MOCKING 'WE ARE CHARLIE KIRK' SONG AT LIVE PODCAST SHOW

The podcasting world was its own unhinged pit of hate. Much of that I’m skipping and focusing on those the regular media still loves to interview and quote. Former sportscaster and MSNBC host Keith Olbermann complained that Sinclair broadcasting urged the FCC and ABC to do more than just suspend Kimmel. He had a typically measured response: "Burn in hell, Sinclair. Alongside Charlie Kirk."

Loathsome podcasting harpy Jennifer Welch mocked Charlie. "The person that I heard that justified his death was him," Welch said. "He’s the one that said on tape that if school kids die, but it means he gets to have a Second Amendment, then that’s what it’s going to be. He’s the one that justified it." Far-left streamer Hasan Piker mockingly sang the song, "We Are Charlie Kirk" during a tour stop. Piker remains a media darling who hobnobs with top Democrats like Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed and listing all of the other offensive things he has said would take much more space.

But, despite all that we’ve seen in the past year, there is reason for hope. Even with a year’s worth of hate tossed around like grenades, that hope endures. I saw hundreds praying at a small north Georgia memorial service I attended. That was love, not hate. TV host Jenny McCarthy said the assassination inspired her in faith. "I’ve always been a follower of Christ, but when he passed, I completely surrendered," she said. "I am so devoted. I mean, I started Bible study immediately."

And Erika Kirk has shown her grace, her heart and her faith through all this. She had the courage to forgive the man who murdered her husband and I doubt seriously that many of us could do the same. Her husband Charlie made the world a better place for all that knew him or knew of him. And he’s still doing it. And that’s what the haters are most upset about.

Teen boater found clinging to capsized vessel after 3 go missing; 2 bodies recovered

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) on Tuesday said only one boater, a 15-year-old, was rescued alive after three individuals went missing earlier this week.

Rescue personnel found the teenager "clinging to the capsized vessel" Monday off the coast of Alaska. Officials said crews found him in the midst of a medical emergency.

The "survivor was rescued from the overturned skiff experiencing symptoms of hypothermia," officials said.

TWO DEAD, INCLUDING INFANT, AFTER BOAT CAPSIZES IN NEW YORK HARBOR; 12 RESCUED

The two other mariners were found dead after the 18-foot fishing vessel they were aboard overturned about 4 miles east of St. Lawrence Island, according to authorities.

The Coast Guard said crews initiated a search mission early Monday after Alaska State Troopers notified the Coast Guard of an overdue boat Sunday evening. The vessel was expected to return Sunday at 3 a.m.

Officials said crews were unable to launch a rescue mission until Monday morning due to weather and poor visibility.

After launching an aircrew, personnel spotted the survivor and deployed a raft with survival equipment.

Officials said a good Samaritan vessel also stepped in, rescuing the 15-year-old survivor and recovering the bodies of the two deceased mariners from the water.

Ex-NFL cheerleader battles former gubernatorial aide in tight GOP primary race

Elaine Pelino, a former NFL cheerleader and publisher pitching herself as the party-line choice, and Aaron Guckian, a former aide to former Gov. Donald Carcieri and a more centrist candidate are locked in a GOP primary that remained too close to call by early Thursday morning.

The race centered on experience and qualifications as Republicans hope they have found a candidate to win over a historically Democratic-leaning state.

In the last election, Daniel McKee, the then-Democratic candidate and current governor of Rhode Island, beat out Republican challenger Ashley Kalus in a 57.9% to 38.9% victory.

Among other priorities in her campaign, Pelino promised to champion merit-based hiring, support law enforcement, immigration law and school choice."This is what I’m going to do. I’m learning. Everything is a learning [curve] because I’m not a lifetime politician. I’m here because I love Rhode Island. And I want them to have a great life. I want them to live in a prosperous and safe place. We should get all the illegals out of here," Pelino said at a candidate forum.

Before her time in politics, Pelino had a wide range of experience, working as a model, in media and even as a cheerleader for the Houston Oilers, the football team that would eventually become the NFL’s Tennessee Titans. Later, in 2011, she founded Tigress magazine, which published 12 issues.

For his part, Guckian took a far more policy-centric approach, committing to overhaul Rhode Island’s permitting, improve service delivery and tighten use of the state’s revenue. He argued that the state’s budget growth had "gone too far."

"The state budget increased from $9.3 billion in 2019 to more than $14 billion between 2024 and 2026, nearly 50% growth in five years, even as federal COVID relief dollars are expiring," Guckian said on his campaign website.

"Rhode Island made a critical mistake. We built permanent commitments on temporary federal money."

Drake Maye's terrible decision gifts Seahawks opening night win as Patriots left stunned to start NFL season

The New England Patriots went into Lumen Field on Wednesday night and watched as the Seattle Seahawks raised a Super Bowl victory banner commemorating a championship won at their expense.

As a result, Drake Maye, an MVP frontrunner last season who led the Patriots to Super Bowl LX, was hoping for some revenge along with his teammates to start the new year on the right foot.

Instead, it was Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe who got his feet down in the end zone on the final play of Maye’s night, notching Seattle’s third interception of the Patriots quarterback and icing a 13-10 victory in a thrilling finish in the Pacific Northwest.

Maye, the Patriots’ offense, had converted on fourth-and-9 to put themselves in field goal range with less than a minute to play in the NFL’s season opener, and he was hoping this fourth-quarter drive ended with some points, because the other two he had in the quarter ended with interceptions – ones that got Drew Lock and the Seahawks’ offense back in the game.

Yes, it was Lock who played most of the game due to Sam Darnold suffering a hip injury just five snaps into the new season. It was looking bleak for a usually raucous "12’s" fan base in the seats, as a dull murmur fell over Lumen Field when Lock took to the field.

But ultimately, his second-half performance turned the tide, making the most of Maye’s mistakes.

Maye’s biggest came on third-and-5 from Seattle’s 16-yard line, where he scrambled out to his right, and instead of going out of bounds or throwing the ball away, he tried to give Mack Hollins a jump ball in the end zone.

Jobe, though, made an incredible acrobatic catch, contorting his body so both his feet remained in bounds and sealed victory. The "12’s" were in rapture when they saw their stellar defense once again save the day, while the Patriots’ sideline couldn’t believe what just happened.

Maye’s opening night was a roller-coaster. He finished 23-of-33 through the air for 178 yards with one touchdown pass to rookie tight end Eli Raridon – the first of the NFL season – while his three interceptions will be a pain point in team meetings later this week after they watch the tape.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks were thankful for the decision of Maye to not throw it away, as they were at least looking at overtime football with a chip-shot field goal in play before that final interception.

They must also be thankful that Lock was ready to go once Darnold was ruled out the rest of the way. He was highly efficient, as the backup quarterback went 16-of-22 for 187 yards with one touchdown and no turnovers.

And it also helps when the reigning Offensive Player of the Year is locked in to help his backup quarterback find some easy pitch-and-catch scenarios. Jaxon Smith-Njigba finished the night with eight catches for 122 yards, including the game-changing 45-yard catch-and-run touchdown on a clever fourth-and-1 call by the Seahawks to pass instead of run.

Smith-Njigba was wide open and all Lock had to do was hit him in the numbers. From there, the Ohio State product used his blazing speed to get past multiple Patriots defenders and tie the game following the Jason Myers extra point.

That touchdown came after Maye’s first interception, which was hauled in by Nehemiah Pritchett on a deep ball intended for new Patriots receiver Romeo Doubs. No, it wasn’t A.J. Brown, the top offseason acquisition by New England, who was targeted after he suffered an ankle injury that knocked him out of the game like Darnold.

Fox News polling shows Trump is underwater with voters on the economy, cost of living and inflation. Sixty-five percent of voters disapprove of his handling of the economy. The president also defended the military conflict in Iran, saying he has received criticism over rising gas prices tied to the conflict but arguing that "I'm right," because Iran was one month away from securing a nuclear weapon. Inflation has risen from 2.4% to 3.4% since the war began in February, while gas prices have also increased.

Republicans who spoke to Fox News Digital on day one of the convention weren't concerned with Trump's economic policies.

"I believe that Trump is doing the right thing," one RNC attendee told Fox News Digital. "The tariffs are bringing a lot of money back, you know, correcting the national debt. And that's gonna improve everything across the board."

"I feel like as soon as we bring this conflict in Iran to a close, we'll start seeing the full effects of President Trump and the greatness that he's done as far as the economy, the great thing of tariffs, and some of the products of the Trump economy in the golden age," said Jacquez Jones of Texas.

Later, Trump shifted his sights to Texas' high profile U.S. Senate race between Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton and Democrat state Rep. James Talarico.

"We have to elect Ken Paxton," he said, segueing into border security, a top issue under both Trump administrations. "Together, we're going to continue to have — we have the strongest borders now in the history of our country."

Later, Trump transitioned to slamming the GOP's far-left opponents.

"In this election, the Democrats have nominated the most extreme and dangerous group of candidates for the House and Senate ever to seek office," he said. "These people are radical left communists. Many of them. Not all of them, but many of them in state after state. The Democrat establishment has been overthrown and replaced by crazed lunatics and radicals. They call themselves Democrat socialists. But actually they're communists. They're not socialists. They're long beyond socialists."

He noted the DSA has proposed abolishing prisons, ICE, Border Patrol, the U.S. Senate and the presidency.

That message was one Alex Stone of Kansas City, Missouri, hoped for earlier in the day.

"Tell the truth about who they are, what they believe and what they plan on doing," he told Fox News Digital when asked what Trump's message to Americans should be. "Democratic Socialists of America with El-Sayed in Michigan, in particular, these people want to destroy people like myself. They want to destory people like President Trump and many of the other people here. If they get into power, what is going to happen to us?"

A.J. Brown’s highly anticipated debut with the New England Patriots was interrupted by an apparent injury in the third quarter of Wednesday’s NFL season opener.

Brown appeared to suffer the injury while trying to make a catch at Lumen Field against the Seattle Seahawks. The game was billed as a rematch of Super Bowl LX, which Seattle won in February by defeating New England 29-10 to claim the franchise’s second Vince Lombardi Trophy.

New England led 10-0 when Brown exited the game Wednesday.

DALLAS — A rogue Senate Democrat toying with the idea of leaving his party drew a hard line in the sand after making a surprise appearance at the GOP’s Trump-centric convention.

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., has been welcomed with open arms by Republicans to join the party after he floated leaving his own caucus, and spurred further speculation that he would jump ship after dropping a video introducing his colleague, Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Pa., at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention on Wednesday.

But in a statement to Fox News Digital, the progressive-turned centrist said that he wasn’t turning his back on the Democratic Party, even as the knives have come out to cut him loose from the Senate.

"I’m a lifelong Democrat who votes overwhelmingly with my party — and should the Senate flip in November, I will still be the 51st vote that I ran on," he continued.

Fetterman started his career in the Senate after besting Dr. Mehmet Oz in a tight race for power in 2022, where he clinched a historically thin Democratic majority in 2022 running on a progressive platform.

Fetterman has routinely bucked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and his colleagues on a handful of key issues, like President Donald Trump’s war in Iran or voting with Republicans to end the marathon government shutdown last Fall.

Yet Brown still expects the world to treat him like a generational thought leader who transcends basketball, all while complaining about how unfairly athletes are treated.

In a 2017 interview with The Guardian, Brown complained that athletes were still expected to "shut up and dribble."

EXCLUSIVE: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has deported more than 2,000 known or suspected terrorists from the U.S. since President Donald Trump took office in January 2025, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) tells Fox News Digital, as the nation prepares to mark 25 years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

DHS said ICE arrested more than 2,150 known or suspected terrorists between Jan. 20, 2025, and Sept. 9, 2026, and deported 2,015 during that period.

"As we reflect on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the brave men and women of ICE continue to carry out their duty to protect the homeland and keep the American people safe," DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in the department’s announcement.

Mullin said ICE had arrested more than 2,100 known or suspected terrorists and deported more than 2,000, adding that the anniversary underscored the department’s commitment to "eternal vigilance."

DHS pointed to several recent cases involving alleged terrorists and members of designated foreign terrorist organizations.

In June, federal authorities arrested Abraham Hermosillo Alvarez, a Mexican national DHS described as the suspected ringleader of an alleged mass-casualty plot targeting UFC Freedom 250 at the White House.

DHS said Alvarez overstayed a visitor visa that expired in 2001 and later received DACA status in 2014. ICE lodged a detainer following his arrest.

Days earlier, ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) arrested Felipe Linares De Oliveira Dell Aquilla, a Brazilian national DHS identified as a former commander of two designated foreign terrorist organizations.

Authorities said they recovered a handgun, cash and multiple electronic devices after a vehicle and foot pursuit in North Carolina.

DHS said Aquilla was wanted in Brazil on criminal association and extortion charges and was allegedly holding his wife against her will while preparing to flee to Mexico.

ICE lodged a detainer after his arrest, while investigators pursued additional firearm and kidnapping charges.

Four Venezuelan members of Tren de Aragua also pleaded guilty in May to charges stemming from a 2024 Bronx shooting that killed two people.

DHS said all four had entered the United States illegally between 2022 and 2023.

Researcher who departed AI role over fears of racing into extinction says people are 'begging' for regulation

The Anthropic researcher who is leaving the company over fears the technology is gambling with human life told Fox News there is hope that we can avoid the chance it could destroy humankind within the next decade.

Speaking exclusively Wednesday on "Special Report," Jacob Coxon, 27, said regulation is key.

He posted his resignation Tuesday on X, writing that companies are not acting responsibly and that the race toward self-improving superintelligence is "gambling with our lives."

Coxon, who said he spent the past three years doing pretraining research at OpenAI and Anthropic, noted that it's not a completely hopeless scenario.

He told Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier the problem is "eminently solvable."

Evan Hubinger, alignment science lead at Anthropic, expressed his agreement with Coxon's X post.

"Jacob is correct here — we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans!" he wrote on X. "I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to."

Coxon said he agrees with Hubinger that right now, the threat is "minimal" of artificial intelligence's actual takeover.

"But recursive self-improvement — this AIs making themselves smarter — could happen as soon as next year," he added. "Some people even say six months. So this attitude is shared across the industry, where people essentially are aware that the work they are currently doing, if we don't slow down, could lead to AI takeover by the end of the decade."

He believes there is "definitely" something the country can do to change the dynamic of the "greater than 10% chance" that AI kills all humans.

"I think the problem is not unsolvable, it's not like we think this is some impossible thing — it's just, we're racing so fast, we haven't got time to solve it correctly, we're not being careful, and everyone wants to be careful," Coxon said. "I think it's just — people are begging for regulation. I think it's just a matter of — international — somebody stepping in and being able to ensure that we don't race ourselves into extinction. The problem is eminently solvable."

The technology is being used on the international stage as a "superweapon" in an arms race, Coxon said, calling for the global community to provide oversight.

"This is possibly the most dangerous technology that humanity has ever created," he continued. "It's basically out of science fiction. I think we have no other choice but to cooperate internationally because an arms race would be disastrous in a way that no other human activity has been in the past."

Coxon mentioned that a number of technology leaders have publicly expressed the need for a slow-down agreement, but people are not yet taking them seriously.

"It's not just a marketing stunt," he said. "These people are deadly serious that they think their industry needs to be regulated as soon as possible."

As for AI's benefits, Coxon said we are "on the doorstep of tremendous discoveries," but we're running in too quickly. He emphasized the need for moderation.

Baier asked Coxon if the issue could be figured out.

"I think definitely. I think if we actually try instead of submitting to the inevitability of a doomed race or a hubristic gamble, then we can solve it," he said. "The problem is not unsolvable."

Shelton secured the biggest victory of his young professional career in a tiebreaker shortly after 3:30 a.m. ET, becoming the first American man to defeat either Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner at a Grand Slam. His victory, coupled with Frances Tiafoe’s five-set win over fellow American Alex Michelsen in the other men’s quarterfinal, guaranteed that at least one American would reach the 2026 U.S. Open final.

"Starting earlier wasn’t possible because of Frances and Mickelson’s match," Roddick said. "And so, you have to have a night session at the US Open. It’s one of the things that we all love. And they’ve been on the wrong side of luck. Now, I know there are some people who have said shorter format. And I know Bill Simmons made the point that this is ridiculous, that we’re playing too long. He’s normally well-thought-out in his thoughts. Roddick acknowledged the practical case for a shorter format, noting the challenges a late-night match can pose for those working behind the scenes.

"I understand all the pragmatists out there that say we should have a shorter format. I understand the reasons for it. Talarico says he 'missed the mark' as he backtracks on controversial woke statements

In a Fox News exclusive interview, Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico came out in favor of banning gender surgery for minors and opposed transgender-identifying men competing in women’s sports.

Talarico also backtracked on several of his more controversial claims, including saying there are six genders and that "God is nonbinary."

This comes as the Texas Senate race, which is surprisingly close according to recent Fox News polling, enters its final months. The race is considered critical to both parties' chances of securing a Senate majority. Talarico is facing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican who has faced controversies of his own. A Republican loss in Texas would significantly impact President Donald Trump's ability to implement his agenda.

Fox News spoke with Talarico at a food drive campaign event in Dallas on Tuesday. Talarico’s event took place as the first-ever GOP midterm convention kicked off just miles away in downtown Dallas.

TALARICO CAMPAIGNS WITH SURGEON WHO OPERATED ON TRANSGENDER MINORS: ‘WOLF IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING’

Asked whether he would vote as a U.S. senator in favor of a national ban on gender surgery for minors, Talarico answered, "Absolutely."

He said, "I've been consistent on this issue," explaining his opposition to a Texas bill to ban transgender surgeries on minors by saying the measure "was overly broad."

"If you go back and check, I voted for a major amendment to limit the bill to banning surgeries for minors," he said. "As a lawmaker, my job is to try to sift through everything the bill does. And sometimes there's stuff in it that's really harmful, and I have no choice but to oppose the bill as a whole."

"It's why I try to use amendments, to narrow the focus of the bill so that it does exactly what we intend it to do," he continued. "It's what I tried to do with that piece of legislation, and unfortunately the amendment I supported was unsuccessful."

In 2023, as a member of the Texas House of Representatives, Talarico voted against a state bill titled SB 14, which prohibited certain gender surgery, puberty blockers and certain hormone treatments for minors. There were 18 amendments to the bill proposed by Democrats, all of which Talarico voted in favor and all of which ultimately failed.

In the same interview, Talarico acknowledged that men in women’s sports is a significant issue in Texas. He said, "I oppose trans athletes playing in girls’ sports if it endangers safety or fairness."

"Every sport has to be safe and fair. As a former public school teacher, I care a lot about our student athletes. I care a lot about our students. And so, I will oppose trans athletes playing in girls’ sports if it risks safety or fairness," he said.

Talarico’s comments mark a shift from his earlier position as a Texas state lawmaker.

In 2021, while serving on the Texas House Public Education Committee, he opposed SB 29, which sought to require public-school athletes to compete based on the biological sex listed on their birth certificate, calling the issue a "manufactured problem." Later that year, he voted against HB 25, which enacted similar restrictions into Texas law.

He also addressed perhaps his most controversial statement, which he made in 2021, while opposing a Texas bill to keep men out of women’s sports. Talarico said on the state House floor that "God is both masculine and feminine and everything in between. God is non-binary."

"I was being provocative with that statement. I get that," Talarico admitted, explaining, "What I was trying to say is that you can't use human categories to define God, and that's not controversial theologically. In fact, the late Charlie Kirk, the late Pope Benedict all said the same thing."

Talarico continued, claiming "these comments are being clipped out of context to try to distract from Ken Paxton's career of corruption."

"You mentioned [Paxton] being acquitted in the state Senate. That was after two of his billionaire megadonors gave the lieutenant governor a $3 million check to buy his acquittal," Talarico said. "So, Ken Paxton is the most corrupt politician in Texas and he's gonna try to clip some of my comments, including comments where I was being a little provocative in order to try to distract from that career."

Fox News Digital reached out to the Paxton campaign for a response.

Regarding his past comment about there being more than two genders, Talarico said he does not currently believe there are six sexes.

"I've missed the mark on some of my past statements. I will be the first to admit it," he said. "What I meant is that there are two sexes, and then there's a small percentage of people with genetic abnormalities."

"Obviously didn't say it correctly. There are not six sexes. There are two, and I think the reason that politicians in that convention center across the street want to talk about six sexes is because they don't want to talk about $6 diesel," he said.

Though he walked back these controversies, Talarico did not hold back on his criticism of the Supreme Court, which he described as "infected" with corruption, saying it "needs to be overhauled."

He said that if elected, "You're going to expect that I will vote for overhaul to the Supreme Court. That will include binding codes of conduct for our justices. It'll include term limits, and I am open to a discussion about expanding the number of justices."

Following these controversies, Talarico pledged to keep his message focused on affordability for the remainder of the campaign.

"Everywhere I go across the state of Texas, people are struggling to survive in this economy. They are struggling to afford the basics: groceries, gas, utilities, healthcare. And that's what I'm going to be focused on from now until Election Day."

On the topic of affordability, Talarico said that "we should not have a state income tax" in Texas. This is despite Talarico previously voting against a measure to permanently ban a state income tax, which he suggested was redundant and an example of "government waste at its worst."

The measure was ultimately passed by the Texas Legislature and approved by Texas voters in November 2019.

This coming Friday will mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes in a coordinated attack against the United States.

Two of the flights struck New York City’s Twin Towers at the World Trade Center, sending both buildings crashing down and causing mass casualties. A third flight struck the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., while the fourth crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

A suspected drug-smuggling vessel was wiped out in a lethal U.S. military strike Wednesday in the Eastern Pacific, killing three alleged "narco-terrorists" aboard, according to the Department of War.

Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere carried out the Sept. 9 strike under the direction of U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) after intelligence allegedly tied the vessel to drug trafficking.

"Confirmed intelligence revealed the vessel's active involvement in narco-trafficking," the department said in a post on X. "The operation killed three narco-terrorists."

The operation marked the latest U.S. attack on suspected cartel vessels accused of moving deadly narcotics along known trafficking routes off the coast of Latin America.

It came less than two weeks after the Pentagon released newly unclassified images to Fox News Digital showing suspected drug boats speeding across open water, including one vessel loaded with what appeared to be bundles of narcotics.

The images, dated Oct. 27, Oct. 29 and Dec. 4, 2025, offered a rare look at suspected smugglers under U.S. military surveillance as the Trump administration intensified its campaign against cartel networks.

Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson accompanied the release with a deadly warning for traffickers who threaten American communities.

"Nearly one year after the first strike, the message to narco-terrorists remains unchanged: if you traffic deadly illicit narcotics and threaten the American people, we will hunt you down, we will find you, and we will kill you," Wilson told Fox News Digital at the time.

The Pentagon said Operation Southern Spear had carried out 67 strikes as of late August, beginning with the first operation on Sept. 2, 2025.

Wilson said the campaign had disrupted trafficking networks, forced smugglers to change their tactics and removed "dangerous narcoterrorists."

"Operation Southern Spear has disrupted trafficking networks, forced trafficker adaptations, removed dangerous narcoterrorists, and demonstrated that the United States will use every lawful tool available to defend our Homeland and protect our communities," Wilson said.

One of the most recent strikes came Aug. 25, when U.S. Southern Command said four alleged drug smugglers were killed aboard a fast boat operating along known trafficking routes in the Caribbean.

"Confirmed intelligence revealed the vessel’s active involvement in narco-trafficking," SOUTHCOM said at the time.

The operation was carried out by Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere under the direction of Gen. Francis L. Donovan.

"Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere continues executing precise, lethal operations against the cartels," Donovan said. "We will hunt, disrupt, and defeat these narco-terrorist networks."

"SOUTHCOM is resolved to neutralizing cartel terror and violence throughout the region and into the U.S. homeland," he added.

Days before that Caribbean strike, the U.S. military said two people were killed in an attack on a vessel in the Eastern Pacific. It was the first reported strike in more than two months.

War Secretary Pete Hegseth said during an August visit to Panama that Colombia, Guatemala and Honduras had agreed to allow the U.S. to conduct joint operations against criminal groups on their soil, though Guatemala denied that an agreement had been reached. The NFL promised that its Week 1 games would honor the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the 25th anniversary. However, individual teams had some leeway in how they did so, and the Seattle Seahawks took a uniquely local approach.

The league’s first game of the 2026 regular season, a rematch of Super Bowl LX between the visiting New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, featured a pregame announcement that will be heard throughout the league Thursday in Australia, before Sunday’s games and ahead of Monday Night Football:

"This weekend marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, the deadliest in our nation's history," the Lumens Field announcement bellowed. "We now ask that you join us in a moment of silence in honor of those affected by the September 11th tragedy."

And immediately, one of the NFL's loudest venues fell mostly silent.

This must be said: The NFL's script calls the attacks of September 11, 2001, exactly what it was.

It wasn't "some people did something," as some Somalian-born congresswoman once said. It wasn't just a hijacking of planes.

These were indeed coordinated "terrorist attacks."

A jihadist attack might have been a more accurate description, but we all know what kind of terrorists perpetrated it.

Anyway, after the moment of silence, the crowd was directed to both a sign language and guitar solo interpretation of the national anthem.

The guitar solo was performed by Pearl Jam's Mike McCready.

McCready, a liberal who has advocated all things ObamaCare and former President Obama, started out quite well.

It actually kind of hearkened back to Jimi Hendrix's rendition for a minute.

And then McCready apparently remembered he's a Seattle grunge rocker and went totally off Francis Scott Key script.

"Authentically Seattle," NBC's Mike Tirico noted on NBC.

The Seahawks also invited some first responders who actually flew across the country to aid in the recovery effort after Sept. 11.

Seattle loved all of it, and the military flyover at the end provided some high-drama punctuation overhead.

Bryce Underwood addresses Kyle Whittingham's comments about remaining starting QB at Michigan

The Michigan Wolverines became the story of Week 1 of the college football season as a result of their underwhelming performance in the "win" over Western Michigan.

After time seemingly expired, officials added an additional second to the clock after replay review. Which Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood used to his advantage. While his first attempt sailed out of the back of the end zone, the second try fell perfectly to wide receiver JJ Buchanan for the walk-off winner.

It was Underwood's best play of the game, not too surprising considering it was a game-winning Hail Mary. But what was surprising was just how bad he looked for the previous 60 minutes. Really, really bad. For someone whose recruitment turned into a bidding war, with well-heeled donors pushing him to Ann Arbor.

Excluding the Hail Mary, Underwood completed just 11 passes on 21 attempts for 127 yards. He had much more success in the running game, with nine rushes for 47 yards and a touchdown. But he frequently looked indecisive as a passer, overthrowing or underthrowing receivers and frequently looking confused in a new offense.

After the game and his performance, Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham wasn't exactly effusive with praise. Whittingham said Underwood was the starter "right now," but heavily implied that his role would be reevaluated, perhaps sooner rather than later.

"He's our QB right now. It's not something that's infinite," Whittingham told reporters on Monday. "At some point, we've got to turn a corner, and we've got to see improvement.

"As we do with a bunch of stuff, we've got to see improvement out of the coaches. It's not just Bryce; it's not just Bryce's job that is not absolutely set in concrete. Nobody's is, you've got to perform week in and week out. Become somebody that we feel is playing at a level that we can win with."

For a quarterback who got $12 million in NIL to start at Michigan, that's underwhelming at best and potentially career changing at worst. On Wednesday, Underwood spoke to the media and was asked about Whittingham's comments. And instead of responding head on, he feigned ignorance.

"Um, there was comments about that?" he said. After he was reminded of Whittingham's remarks, he answered "That's cool. I didn't see that. It's cool."

The full video of the interaction was even more painful to see than the answers indicated.

Your head coach says your job might be up for grabs if things don't improve quickly, and you expect people to believe that you didn't hear about it until days later, when asked by reporters? That's obviously not what happened, but it is telling that Underwood choose to respond like this.

Whatever answer he gave could have been obviously pre-rehearsed, but it would instill more confidence to acknowledge the poor play this past weekend, and express confidence that better play is ahead. Particularly when the Wolverines have no time to rest, with an even tougher matchup against the Oklahoma Sooners looming this coming weekend.

Underwood still has the immense arm strength, potential, and passing ability that he had coming out of high school, but to this point in his career, it's been mainly visible in short bursts and not through him consistently dominating games. He's still young, and still just one game into his sophomore season, but if Underwood doesn't improve in a hurry, college football fans might quickly turn to labeling him one of the biggest busts of the NIL era.

Dem senator delivers surprise video at Republican convention backing McCormick

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., delivered a surprise video message at the GOP midterm convention Wednesday night, praising President Donald Trump and Republican Sen. Dave McCormick while rejecting what he described as the Democratic Party’s "extremes and socialism."

"I’m a commonsense Democrat. I’m always going to stand with America," Fetterman said. "I’m always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life."

Fetterman introduced McCormick, who is seeking re-election to the Senate, as "the kind of senator that gets the job done" and someone who will "fight for Pennsylvania."

Standing in front of an iconic U.S. steel mill, Fetterman said he was proud to work with McCormick and Trump to defend Pennsylvania’s steel industry, which remains a central part of the state’s economic and political identity.

"That’s exactly the kind of thing that we will work together and will work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life right here in the Steel Valley," Fetterman said.

The message was notable because Fetterman is a sitting Democratic senator appearing at the Republican Party’s first midterm convention, where Trump is expected to rally GOP voters ahead of the Nov. 3 elections.

His appearance also highlighted his increasingly strained relationship with Democratic leaders and the party’s left wing. Fetterman has repeatedly broken with Democrats on issues including Israel, immigration and Trump’s military actions against Iran.

He has remained one of the most outspoken Democratic supporters of Israel in the Senate and has criticized members of his party who have sought to limit U.S. support for the country. Fetterman has also backed tougher immigration enforcement and supported some Trump administration nominees, positions that have drawn criticism from Democrats.

Fetterman has said he would consider leaving the Democratic Party if it became "the anti-Israel party," though he has not indicated that he plans to switch parties.

The senator’s relationship with McCormick has also fueled speculation about his political future. The two Pennsylvania senators previously faced one another in the 2022 Senate race, when Fetterman defeated Republican nominee Mehmet Oz and McCormick lost the GOP primary.

Democratic student group to protest Charlie Kirk memorial at campus where he was killed

Turning Point USA (TPUSA) will be hosting a memorial for its founder Charlie Kirk, who was killed at Utah Valley University (UVU), on the first anniversary of his death, and a student group is planning a protest.

In a press release, TPUSA announced, "Turning Point USA will hold the ‘Freedom Built to Last Memorial’ on Sept. 10 to honor the faith-filled husband, father, and defender of free speech with a memorial that serves as a deliberate act of remembrance and a call for students and supporters to continue his life’s work."

The livestreamed event, which begins at 6:30 p.m. MT, will feature speeches by radio host Glenn Beck, Christian author Frank Turek and TPUSA officials.

Utah Valley University announced last month it would cancel classes and close its campus Sept. 10 for a day of healing, service and connection.

However, some students have voiced opposition to the event.

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, UVU’s Students for a Democratic Society club opposes the memorial and is planning to protest it Thursday evening before the TPUSA event begins. The group penned an open letter to campus administration that has reportedly been signed by more than 600 people.

"We, students of UVU, strongly condemn the decision to hand over our campus to TPUSA on September 10. As we approach the anniversary of this tragic event, it should be made clear that many of us will be further negatively affected by allowing TPUSA to occupy our campus on that day," students said in the open letter addressed to the campus administration.

"By closing the campus for the entire day ‘to provide time and space’ and emailing all students with details about the far-right political event hosted at our UCCU Center, President Anderson has aligned himself with the interests of Charlie Kirk’s openly racist and antagonistic organization, which intends to use a narrative of victimhood to provide cover for its campaign to advance chauvinistic and divisive ideas within our university."

According to the Tribune, UVU President Jon Anderson stressed the event is not sponsored by the university, but the school would be providing security. He defended allowing TPUSA to host the event on campus.

"As an institution, it’s important that we stay apolitical, that we don’t jump in the fray," he said. "Any entity could’ve used that space, and they chose to have that day. And we allowed them to do that."

Seahawks QB Sam Darnold suffers hip injury, ruled out just five snaps into NFL season

Just five snaps into the new NFL season, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold was back in the locker room with an injury.

Darnold was sacked during the Seahawks' first series of the season by New England Patriots linebacker Dre'Mont Jones, and he appeared to land awkwardly on his side.

When the Seahawks went back to the sideline to punt away, Darnold was noticeably limping. He eventually went into the blue medical tent, and after deliberation from the Seahawks' medical team, he began limping his way to the locker room.

Darnold is now officially questionable to return, as Drew Lock took over at quarterback for Seattle.

There was nothing malicious about Jones’ play as he tracked down Darnold. The issue came from his fall onto the Lumen Field turf.

Darnold seemed fine initially when he began jogging to the sideline, but the limp slowly came in. NBC/Peacock play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico noticed Darnold's gait, calling it out over the NFL's first broadcast of the year. A plane carrying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Norway for the king’s state funeral was "almost hit" by a drone as it prepared to take off from Moldova on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre told public broadcaster NRK about the incident Wednesday, the outlet said, after Zelenskyy’s aircraft arrived safely in Oslo Tuesday evening.

"His plane was almost hit by a drone as it was about to take off from Moldova. That is the reality he is facing," Støre said, without specifying how close the drone came to the Ukrainian leader's aircraft.

A Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agent who investigated child exploitation cases has been indicted on rape, incest and multiple child sex abuse charges involving a juvenile girl in Alabama, authorities said.

A Baldwin County grand jury indicted Kent Blacklidge, 43, on charges of first-degree rape, second-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, second-degree sodomy, two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, two counts of second-degree sexual abuse and incest, according to the Spanish Fort Police Department.

Police said investigators opened the case Jan. 11 after receiving a report alleging the sexual abuse of a juvenile female.

Blacklidge was placed on administrative leave shortly after the investigation began, authorities said.

Marshall said the allegations are especially troubling because Blacklidge's duties with HSI included investigating child exploitation cases and helping educate the public about crimes against children.

Blacklidge turned himself in Sept. 5 after investigators contacted his attorney, officials said. Marshall said if Blacklidge posts bond, he will be subject to electronic monitoring and home confinement and prohibited from contacting the alleged victim or anyone younger than 18.

Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee lost his Democratic primary Wednesday to businesswoman Helena Foulkes, becoming the first sitting governor in the country since 2018 to be denied his party's nomination.

Foulkes, a former CVS executive and current Costco board member, defeated McKee in a rematch of their closely fought 2022 Democratic primary, when McKee edged her by just a few percentage points.

McKee's defeat Wednesday adds another incumbent to a growing list of officeholders ousted during the 2026 primary season.

McKee first became governor in 2021 after Gov. Gina Raimondo left office to serve as Commerce Secretary in the Biden administration. The former Cumberland mayor and two-term lieutenant governor went on to win his first full term in 2022 after narrowly emerging from a crowded Democratic primary that included Foulkes.

A previously deported illegal alien allegedly drove drunk before flipping his SUV into oncoming traffic and killing a newly engaged Ohio teacher, authorities said.

Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez, a 33-year-old Mexican national who federal officials say illegally returned to the U.S. after being deported, now faces aggravated vehicular homicide and other charges in the death of 23-year-old Cameron Lyon.

Lyon’s fiancée, 23-year-old Abrielle Kerns, was seriously injured in the fiery Sunday evening crash on U.S. Route 33 in Fairfield County, according to her family.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol initially described Kerns’ injuries as non-life-threatening, but relatives said she remained in intensive care "fighting to recover" as the family grappled with Lyon’s death.

"This is an unconscionable tragedy because it was preventable," Republican Ohio gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy wrote. "This perpetrator shouldn’t have ever been in our country, let alone permitted to remain here."

Ramaswamy pointed to Uribe-Gonzalez’s alleged drunken driving and immigration history as he vowed to take action if elected governor.

"But he ended up driving drunk & killed an innocent young man in Ohio. I won’t tolerate this in our state," Ramaswamy wrote. "So devastating. It doesn’t have to be this way. I’ll fix it in Ohio next year & will go hard as necessary."

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Lyon was driving west when Uribe-Gonzalez’s eastbound GMC Terrain went off the right side of the highway shortly after 6 p.m.

Lyon was treated at the crash site but died a short time later, the patrol said. Uribe-Gonzalez suffered minor injuries.

Investigators said alcohol is suspected to have played a role in the crash.

Uribe-Gonzalez was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol and operating a motor vehicle without a valid license.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged a detainer with the Fairfield County Jail the day after his arrest, asking local officials not to release him before federal agents can take custody.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Uribe-Gonzalez first entered the country illegally through Texas in January 2020 and was arrested by Border Patrol.

An immigration judge issued a final removal order Jan. 11, 2020, and the Trump administration deported him to Mexico April 14 of that year, according to DHS.

Federal officials said Uribe-Gonzalez later illegally crossed back into the U.S. at an unknown date and location.

"This illegal alien has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol after allegedly causing a car crash that killed 23-year-old Cameron Lyon in Ohio," DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said.

"Cameron had his whole life ahead of him, and that life was stolen by this criminal who never should have been in our country in the first place."

Lyon had recently begun his first teaching job and was well-loved by staff and students at Crestline Exempted Schools, according to a fundraiser for his family.

A graduate of Otterbein University, Lyon was remembered as a cherished son, brother and friend whose death left his family and community devastated.

"We are devastated by this needless tragedy and miss him dearly," organizers of the fundraiser for Lyon’s family wrote.

A separate fundraiser organized by Kerns’ aunt and uncle said the family was standing beside her through the "shock, pain and uncertainty" of the difficult days following the crash.

"Everyone who knew Abrielle and Cameron could see the love they shared and the future they were building together," the family wrote.

Millersport Coffee announced it will donate a portion of its weekend sales to support Lyon’s family and help cover Kerns’ medical needs.

"The entire Kerns family is like family to us," the coffee shop wrote. "We are incredibly thankful that she survived, while we grieve with her and the Lyon family over the heartbreaking loss of her fiancé, Cameron Lyon."

Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Jack Reed fended off two progressive primary challengers Wednesday, extending a three-decade hold on his party's nomination as the 76-year-old senator seeks a sixth term in Washington.

Reed defeated Connor Burbridge, a "small business owner, elder-care worker, community organizer and a working-class Rhode Islander," according to his campaign website, and Luis Muñoz, a medical school graduate, med tech entrepreneur and former candidate who previously ran for Rhode Island governor in 2018 and 2022, according to Muñoz's LinkedIn profile and local reporting about his previous runs.

The victory sends Reed to the November general election against Republican Ray McKay, who ran unopposed in his primary, and independent Michael Bahry.

Reed, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, has supported continued military assistance to Israel despite criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and calling for renewed efforts toward a two-state solution.

He was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996 after serving three terms in the House, and, in addition to being the ranking Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, Reed serves on the Appropriations, Banking and Intelligence committees.

His campaign reported roughly $3.4 million in total receipts during the 2025-2026 election cycle through Aug. 20 and had nearly $3.1 million in cash on hand, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) records.
