Marlins outfielders collide, knock fly ball over wall to give Braves star a home run in brutal mishap

The Miami Marlins outfielders took the definition of outfield assist to a whole new level.

Normally, an outfield assist is credited to an outfielder when they throw a ball into the infield to record an out against a baserunner. In the bottom of the third inning of the Marlins’ 11-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Thursday at Truist Park, they did the complete opposite of recording an outfield assist.

With a man on first base, Braves star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. hammered Marlins' starter Janson Junk’s 79-mph sweeper to deep left-center field but didn’t quite get enough of it to clear the wall.

Luckily for Acuña, Marlins left fielder Heriberto Hernández and center fielder Esteury Ruiz did not communicate about who was going to catch the deep fly ball, and they collided with each other on the warning track. When Ruiz and Hernandez collided, the ball popped up and over the wall for a home run.

The two outfielders looked around on the ground for the ball only to realize they had knocked it over the wall.

Acuña stood on first base for a couple of seconds, unsure if it was a home run before he eventually rounded the bases. Ruiz said the two outfielders couldn’t hear each other.

"When I saw the ball, I thought it was leaving the ballpark," Ruiz said through an interpreter, per MLB.com. "While I was running, I noticed it was going to stay on the field. I said, 'I got it,' and you can see in the video that (Hernández) also said, 'I got it.' But we couldn't hear each other with the noise of the ballpark. We couldn't hear each other."

For Acuña, it was the first of two home runs he hit in the win. He hit his second home run over the right-field wall, with no help from the outfielders, in the eighth inning to give the Braves a 9-2 lead.

"The second one was special, because the first one told me I needed help," Acuña said, according to MLB.com.

"(Acuña) had a little angel on his shoulder tonight, or something," Braves first baseman Matt Olson said, according to MLB.com.

The Braves’ victory was their season-high eighth straight, as they continue to build on their 8 1/2 game lead in the National League East.

The Braves (70-45) will look to extend their winning streak against the New York Yankees (64-51) on Friday at 7:05 p.m. ET.

The Marlins (58-58) will look to bounce back against the Los Angeles Angels (56-59) on Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET.

A routine traffic stop exploded into violence when police say a suspect sped off with an officer trapped inside his car and dragged another officer who was holding on to the vehicle.

The dangerous and chaotic scene played out in Eustis, Florida over the weekend.

Eustis Police say during a traffic stop early Saturday morning, suspect Shakoi Donovan, 28, drove away with an officer stuck inside the driver side of his vehicle and dragged another officer 10 to 15 feet down the roadway.

The officer can be seen in another officer's bodycam video lying on the ground.

It all started when the officers pulled Donovan over on suspicion he was driving under the influence. A police report says officers spotted a silver Infiniti weaving over a yellow line on a local street.

Two officers stopped Donovan and confronted him, asking him to step out of the car.

When he allegedly did not comply with the officers' repeated requests to get out, they opened his car door and reached toward the suspect in an attempt to physically remove him while the vehicle was running.

It was right at this moment that the suspect is seen on officer-worn bodycamera video speeding away with one officer inside his car.

One officer is heard yelling, "He's taking off Eustis 77 is in the car!"

The report said she was pinned between Donovan and the steering wheel.

The second officer was dragged by the vehicle "sending him tumbling across the S. Eustis Street asphalt, barrel rolling multiple times," the police report said.

His "roll" was captured on camera. He was treated for injuries.

Court records indicate this is not Donovan's first run-in with the law. He was previously arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in May and was also arrested on burglary and battery charges in 2022, among other arrests within Lake County, Florida.

Donovan is facing a list of charges, including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, and resisting with violence, among others, including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, and resisting with violence, among others.

He was still in jail as of Friday and is due in court on Aug. 24.

Left-leaning comedian labeled 'childish' by conservative Jeff Dye after insult scrawled on Tesla

Comedian Jeff Dye fired back after catching fellow performer Laura Kightlinger scrawling an insult across his Tesla, blasting her conduct as "inappropriate for a 60-year-old" woman.

Dye took to X Monday, where he posted snapshots from video he said was captured by his Tesla’s security cameras showing a fellow comedian he’d performed with writing an insult in the fog on his windshield.

"Performed on a show with a comic I’ve never met. Her name is Laura Kightlinger @KingKightlinger. She seemed nice enough. We didn’t talk and she left before I went up," Dye wrote, adding, "I’m assuming she didn’t know it was my Tesla she wrote ‘Douche’ on my Tesla. Strange behavior for a 60-year-old adult. Look forward to working with you again."

The photos gained traction online, with over 440,000 views. Dye posted a follow-up noting that if he’d written something similar on her car, she would’ve spent the next 3 weeks talking about how ‘women are treated differently in Comedy,’ and how even in her own business she ‘doesn’t feel safe.’"

Kightlinger is a writer and comedian, known for serving as a consulting producer on "Will & Grace" and for having several half-hour specials on Comedy Central and HBO. She appeared to endorse Senator Bernie Sanders for President in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Dye is an outspoken conservative, and told Fox News Digital in December that he’s "always been more conservative than my comedic counterparts. I've always been way more religious as far as like, I'm a Christian, so that's not a huge, popular thing in stand-up comedy. I was on the front lines in that way."

Following Dye’s post on X, Kightlinger posted her side of the story and a photo of the word she wrote on the windshield alongside screenshots of messages she’d since sent Dye.

"I was so annoyed by his taking down of a comic who had just performed I impulsively wrote douche in the fog on his car. The way you’re crying out about it should be embarrassing to tough-guy misogynists everywhere," Kightlinger responded.

The screenshots reveal she also apologized on social media, calling the decision "impulsive" and noting she should’ve brought her concerns to Dye directly. The messages show Dye arguing the comedian he’d spoken about "can take a joke," and calling Kightlinger’s actions "childish behavior."

He also directly responded to her on X again, adding, "Im not ‘Crying out’. Im simply holding you accountable for your bulls---. I’m also not a tough guy or a misogynist. I’m simply a fellow comedian that didn’t appreciate being called a name. I’d thought you’d understand that."

When reached for comment, Dye’s management gave Fox News Digital a statement from the comedian, noting his car was not vandalized other than the writing in the fog: "My car was not vandalized and my only motivation in posting the video online was to hold Laura Kightlinger accountable for being an a------."

"Writing insults on people’s property is a totally expected behavior for fatherless teens but inappropriate for 60 year old women," Dye added in the statement.

Entertainment reporter and host of the "Hollywood in Toto" podcast, Christian Toto, echoed that sentiment. He told Fox News Digital that the back-and-forth highlights partisan friction in the industry.

"Comedians in recent years, it's almost like they're picking sides in a way," Toto said, later adding that conservative comedians are often used to the criticism.

"When you're a right-leaning comedian, you expect some blowback. So it's not exactly unique territory for him," he said of Dye.

Toto added that while sharp elbows and teasing are standard protocol among comics, in some ways this incident broke traditional boundaries.

"If you're a comedian, you've got all the tools to fire back on stage, on social media or even in person," Toto said, later comparing that kind of exchange to "trash talking on the NBA court."

"The fact that she chose a different path, I don't think that suits her well," he added.

We had the first football game of the season yesterday. Okay, so not really the actual season, but it was the official first preseason game of the NFL year, and we now have something like 20 straight weeks of football on Thursday nights from here on out. I don't know about you, but I can't wait. This has been a good baseball season, but football is still the king of sports. In order to build up our bankroll for the season, we should get some cash on this Astros and Padres game.

The Houston Astros are 59-57 for the season and currently sitting in first place in the AL West. It makes almost no sense to me that Houston would be in this position. I'm not surprised they are roughly a .500 team. Based on their roster, and their pitching especially, that checks out. What is surprising is that the Mariners (or even the Rangers) haven't taken over the division from them. The Astros still have the American League MVP, and maybe that's all they need in order to get the division this year.

I mentioned there have been issues with their pitching staff, and they even traded away a couple of guys before the trade deadline. I don't really think they took back any starter of substance, though. Today, for example, they are starting Ronel Blanco, who has only pitched in 14.2 innings this season. In the three games that he has pitched, he has given up at least three earned runs, walked at least two hitters, and allowed at least one homer. The most he pitched in any game was 5.1 innings. Padres hitters haven't seen Blanco much, with only three players ever facing him, and they are a combined 0-for-9.

The San Diego Padres are once again a disappointment. Did that prevent me from betting on them to win the World Series? Absolutely not. I generally think that talent wins out, and the Padres do have talent. The Dodgers have more talent than anyone, but the Padres' roster stacks up fairly well, even if their team is underperforming once again. Their best hitters are struggling this season, but if they can all lock in, San Diego can go on a tear like Boston has this season.

For whatever reason, it just never all seems to click at the right time for the Padres. Maybe I just overvalue their players for some reason. They once again went out and added to their team in hopes of making the push for the World Series. They traded for Robbie Ray, who starts tonight. Ray comes to them with a 10-6 record, 3.08 ERA, and a 1.29 WHIP. At his best, Ray is Cy Young-caliber. At his worst, he is still a really strong and reliable pitcher. He is coming off of two fantastic months of work, allowing just 11 runs in his past 60 innings. The Astros have been good against Ray in the past, owning a 17-for-54 history.

The majority of the damage from the Astros has come from Jose Altuve. It probably makes sense to put a player prop on him to get 2+ total bases against Ray. He is 11-for-20 against him with six extra-base hits. Even better, Altuve has only struck out once against him, so he is putting the ball in play when he faces Ray.

In addition to the player prop, I will take the Padres to win this game. Ray has been locked in, and I really don't think the Astros are that good of a team. If you can count on the Padres anywhere, it is certainly at home they are 32-25 in San Diego for the season. Give me the Padres to win this one at -126.

DAVID MARCUS: Why rising prices may not cost Republicans as much as you think

The great burrito debate burst onto the social media scene this week after Turning Point USA's Andrew Kolvet posted that the Gen Z voters at his events are upset that the Mexican wraps cost $20 these days.

Reaction was swift, heated and mixed, with some commenters saying this proved prices and affordability are a major red flag for the GOP in the midterms. But others scolded the youths, claiming that "in their day," they survived five years on nothing but ramen noodles, peanut butter and the kindness of strangers.

The fairly obvious subtext to this debate is the war in Iran, as team "cheap burritos" insists the war must end now to bring down prices and win in November, and team "suck it up, kids" argues that long-term economic success requires winning the war.

REPUBLICANS FACE TICKING MIDTERM CLOCK AS IRAN FALLOUT KEEPS PRESSURE ON GAS PRICES

The real question, for Republicans and the Trump administration, is just how angry are Americans over prices, and will that anger make them choose Democrats over the status quo?

To answer this question, it is important to understand that there are two kinds of political issues: gut and mental. Crime, for example, is a gut issue, because if you don’t feel safe on the street you feel it in your gut. Foreign policy, on the other hand, for most Americans, is a mental issue in that you think about it more than you feel it.

Affordability and prices can be a gut issue, and have been in several recent elections. If you are in line at the grocery store watching the tally rack up and hoping you have enough money for it, that is something you feel in the pit of your stomach.

In the fall of 2024, I was in Bedford, Pa., talking to some voters when a woman walked into the restaurant and, apropos of nothing, announced, "I cannot believe how much I just paid for groceries," to nods and grunts of angry assent.

This was not an uncommon occurrence two years ago. Cost of living and prices were not just the top issue for most voters I spoke with, but in many cases it all but eclipsed any others because they really were feeling it. You could see it in their eyes.

In Detroit last month, voters I spoke to were not obsessed with prices. In fact, most felt that Motown was seeing a revival, which helps to explain why, despite a very narrow statewide primary victory for Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, he lost the city badly to the more mainstream, less economically populist Rep. Haley Stevens.

This spring, there was a three-week-or-so period when gas prices really rocketed, and it became the complaint on everyone’s tongue. It was becoming a gut issue, but then the prices eased, and since have stayed in the "I don’t love it, but I can live with it" range.

As for the young adult Gen Z voters feeling an economic pinch, they have some real complaints, even if overpriced Door-Dash meals are not chief among them. The fact is that the cost of entry into adulthood is much higher than it was 30 years ago.

When my then-girlfriend and I moved in together in 1995, we had to pay for rent, a landline (which cost almost nothing), and a couple of utility bills. There was no internet or cell phone bill, and our only subscription was to the journal Lingua Franca.

Republicans should be able to appeal to many of these frustrated young voters with targeted economic relief, something the Trump tax cuts achieved, for example, instead of the snake oil of socialism that the newfangled Democratic Party of Hasan Piker is hawking to them.

Everybody remembers the folly of President Joe Biden telling Americans that they didn’t know how good they had it while they were tightening their belts, and part of that was that Grandpa Joe was trying to talk intellectually about what had become a gut issue.

As far as Iran goes, the only theater of this particular war that the American people really care about is the gas station. If Trump can keep prices moderate, he can lob the occasional bomb at the mullahs until the cows come home.

HEAR IT: Missouri dispatch audio reveals third person hid from crazed neighbor who killed two neighbors

FIRST ON FOX: A terrified teen hid in a closet and watched an elderly neighbor gun down her friend and the girl's mother in Missouri, dispatch audio obtained by Fox News Digital reveals.

Robert Winkelman, 73, walked down the street to his neighbor's House Springs, Missouri, home on July 25 at around 8:30 p.m. and confronted 38-year-old Jessica Lashly about what was going on at her house, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said.

When Lashly responded, Winkelman took out a gun and shot her in the head. As Lashly's 17-year-old daughter, Jersey Greer, rushed to help her mother, Winkelman shot the teen in the head as well, the sheriff's office said. He then chased a third person while still armed but did not fire, deputies said. Lashly and Greer died days later at a hospital.

MISSOURI NEIGHBOR ACCUSED OF KILLING MOTHER AND TEEN DAUGHTER AFTER CONFRONTING FAMILY OVER DISPUTE

In new 911 dispatch audio obtained by Fox News Digital, a dispatcher can be heard saying that the slain 17-year old's friend was hiding in a closet.

"We do have a visual victim hiding in a closet, advising that her friend got shot. We do that law in route, but they are not on scene," the dispatcher said.

A dispatcher said two gunshots could be heard in the background of the call, which was placed by someone who reported a woman was struggling to breathe.

"Received a call, no longer receiving a response from anyone on the phone. We did hear shots in the background," the dispatcher said. "It sounds like possibly two gunshots went off."

"It's unclear what's going on at this time," he added.

When deputies arrived at Winkelman's home and moved to confront him a short time later, he turned the gun on himself.

He died at a hospital Aug. 2, according to investigators, who said he would have been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action.

Reports state that investigators said Winkleman initially went to Lashly's home to complain about noise. A spokesman for the sheriff's office described the horrifying incident to Fox News Digital as a "dispute between neighbors."

Cambridge University professor resigns after major plagiarism accusations prompt investigation

University of Cambridge sociology professor Jason Arday resigned Wednesday after the university announced an investigation into his academic qualifications and honorary appointments amid plagiarism accusations, with one accuser telling Fox that Arday had been hired to be the "face of DEI."

Accusations against Arday surfaced last month from former Cambridge philosophy researcher Nathan Cofnas, who published a Substack article alleging that Arday was a known "plagiarist and fabulist" for more than a year, and much of his personal biography was questionable.

"I am disappointed that Jason Arday resigned. He was hired by Cambridge to be the face of DEI, and he was doing a great job," Cofnas told Fox News Digital.

Cofnas first expressed doubt about Arday's background after the educator said he had been nonverbal until age eleven and practically illiterate until 18 while still being able to get a Ph.D in 2015 and become the youngest Black professor at Cambridge University in 2023.

Using the plagiarism-detection program, Copyleaks, Cofnas said he found several examples of Arday directly lifting materials from a 2009 dissertation without proper citation and sometimes even retaining copy-editing mistakes. Other earlier papers written by Arday were also issued corrections to add more citations, which Cofnas characterized as an admission of plagiarism.

From his research, Cofnas accused the university of hiring Arday to push diversity politics and has since been attempting to cover up plagiarism accusations to protect him from scrutiny.

"When you take away the work that is plagiarized or not otherwise written by Arday, there is essentially nothing resembling real scholarship," Cofnas wrote. "There is no indication that Arday is familiar with even elementary statistics. His research involves reporting his own experiences of alleged racism or having conversations with people and providing subjective commentary."

Arday's appointment in 2023 received massive media attention, with much of it celebrating it as a landmark moment.

Other media outlets and academics began reporting on the accusations, however, such as the Telegraph, the Guardian and the Times of London. Cambridge University initially stood by Arday in a statement on Sunday, saying Arday had already been investigated by Liverpool John Moores University and other journals for plagiarism. However, by Wednesday, Cambridge announced it was reversing course.

"The University of Cambridge has begun an investigation following new information about Professor Arday’s academic qualifications and honorary appointments. In order to ensure a fair process, we will not comment further until this has concluded," the statement read.

Shortly after the statement was released, Arday released his own statement through the Good Law Project announcing that he was resigning with "immediate effect," noting "public scrutiny" as a factor.

"Sadly, the years since my appointment have also been marked by an unrelenting level of public scrutiny and personal attack. While criticism is an inevitable part of academic life, what I have experienced has gone far beyond scholarly disagreement. The relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary have taken a profound toll on me and on those I love," Arday wrote.

Fox News Digital reached out to Cambridge University and Arday for comment.

Cofnas added to Fox News Digital, "However, given that he is gone, a number of people have suggested that his professorship should be given to me. If the Cambridge administration could arrange this, it would go a long way toward restoring trust in higher education."

Cofnas was ousted from Cambridge in 2024 amid criticism of his writing that Blacks would almost completely "disappear from almost all high-profile positions outside of sports and entertainment" in a world of full meritocracy.

Vehicle narrowly avoids slamming into driver on side of Ohio highway, dramatic video shows

A vehicle narrowly avoided slamming into a driver on the side of an Ohio highway Monday, video released by the state Department of Transportation shows.

The motorist was standing along Columbus' I-670 adjacent to his vehicle, which was parallel to the road after seemingly striking the highway divider.

Video then shows a sedan careening toward the driver and his vehicle. The man, noticing the oncoming vehicle, hoists himself onto the highway median at the last second. The oncoming vehicle then smashes into his SUV, the footage shows.

According to a 911 call obtained by local news outlet ABC6, the SUV had a passenger in it at the time of impact.

The passenger told 911 operators that their vehicle had lost a tire and hit the highway divider before the crash.

"It’s off to the side but we are right in the turnstile, and it's really worrying me because we’re going to get hit," the passenger told operators, according to ABC6.

Fox News Digital contacted the Ohio Department of Transportation for updates on the conditions of the passengers involved.

A department spokesman highlighted the incident as a safety lesson, noting that the lane the impacted vehicle was in was closed and should not have had any other cars driving in it.

"There will be a green arrow over it if it's opened, a red X if it is closed. In this case, it was an emergency shoulder, so the person who crashed was stopped on the shoulder of the highway. They were doing the right thing. There should be nobody driving in that lane," Ohio Department of Transportation press secretary Matt Bruning told reporters.

The emergency lane, Bruning explained to Fox News Digital, was a "SmartLane," a highway feature in Ohio that allows the state to convert the wide shoulder into a temporary travel lane as needed. The SmartLane was closed at the time of the crash.

Ex-Obama, Biden diplomat blasts former boss’ border failures: 'They woke up too late'

Former Cabinet secretary and U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar says the Biden administration "woke up too late" to address the border crisis, arguing its failure to prioritize Mexico and effectively communicate its strategy helped hand President Donald Trump one of his strongest political issues.

Salazar, whose family has lived in the southwest since it was part of Mexico, laid out in his new book "Borderlands" how America’s foreign policy is too often on an "east-west paradigm" looking to Asia and Europe and neglecting Mexico and the Americas. He also argued that same mindset plagued the Biden administration, leaving it overly focused on Europe and Asia while neglecting Mexico and the Western Hemisphere.

"From day one, there should have been a great sense of urgency in addressing the crisis of a broken border and the migration crisis that we are seeing," Salazar said, arguing the Biden White House lacked both a comprehensive strategy and a coherent communications operation, creating what he described as a communications vacuum that Republicans filled.

"I think that's what trapped the administration into this sense that they woke up too late by the time they did the right things to get control of the border," he said.

In the book, he recounts nearly resigning from his ambassadorship during a visit to Mexico with Biden and several inner-circle officials after being left out of an important meeting where he wanted to make the case for appointing a border-and-migration czar.

After one meeting at the Palacio Nacional in Mexico City, Salazar wrote that he decided to present his plan the next day but found out that he and former Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., weren’t going to be in the key meeting the next day.

Ultimately, he was able to meet privately with Biden at the last minute, where he expressed his concerns:

"We need someone in the White House to oversee the border, migration, Mexico, and the Americas. No one is in charge now. We need a border and migration czar," he said, reminding Biden that adviser Jeffrey Zients served as a "czar" for the COVID-19 response.

"[We need] someone focused exclusively on this crisis, with the authority to coordinate and direct action across agencies in Washington and communicate the message with one voice on these issues. With all due respect, Mr. President, if we are to succeed, it is urgent that we have someone like this in charge."

Salazar wrote that even after Biden's June 2024 executive order sharply reduced crossings, the administration failed to communicate the policy's success before Biden exited the race.

He said that gave President Donald Trump an opportunity to campaign on the "low-hanging fruit" of the border crisis.

Fox News Digital reached out to the White House and Biden for comment.

Both Biden and Trump, however, displayed what Salazar called "foreign policy malpractice" in terms of the Americas — something administrations have struggled with for 100 years, according to Salazar.

"That’s where everybody gets trapped," he said.

"Republicans, like Donald Trump, use it as a political advantage because that's how they win elections. And they realized that way back 20-some years ago."

"Democrats, on the other hand, have a sense that it is very important. And they do focus, but only on the border and on domestic migration issues [like] immigration reform. They don't focus at all or enough on Mexico [or] the border between Mexico and Guatemala — And that's what I believe we have to do. And that is what 'Borderlands' proposes that we do," he said, referring to his book.

Instead of demonizing migrants or focusing only on social aspects of the crisis, Salazar said his "Borderlands Platform" is a new vision that is grounded in realizing economic and national security prosperity for all three North American countries.

Salazar's proposed "Borderlands Platform" calls for a "New American Alliance" among the United States, Mexico and Canada, including deeper security cooperation, expanded labor mobility and renewed investment in North American trade. He argued immigration policy should be treated as both a national security and economic issue rather than solely a domestic political fight — and wrote supportively about renewing Trump’s USMCA, which had supplanted Bill Clinton’s NAFTA.

Salazar said Trump is correct that the border is "broken," but said he disagreed with Trump's approach, calling it divisive and pointing to ICE-involved shootings.

"It's not the American way where people have rights, where you have a sense of security, understand the importance of our security within our own country and the importance for supporting law enforcement."

Salazar pointed to his tenure as Colorado attorney general, where he led "thousands of cops," as evidence of his longstanding support for law enforcement.

"What is being neglected here is the bigger picture. And that's this foreign policy paradigm that is so required for the United States and Mexico and the Americas. And I don't see this administration moving in that direction to create the kind of legal frameworks that are essential that will give us our national security and ensure that we have a border that works and ensure we have an immigration system that is reformed and does the right thing," he said.

Salazar confirmed he has met with several Democrats viewed as potential 2028 presidential contenders, strongly advising them to make border and migration policy a top issue.

"Not that I have a lot of sway, but at least I will do everything I can to make sure that this is at the heart of every Democrat running for president," he said, noting that Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., was one lawmaker who met with him and endorsed his "Borderlands" book.

Asked if he would entertain Republican invitations, Salazar said if Trump reached out he would meet with him, but underlined that he would not become "political fodder for anybody."

"I do think that the Trump administration has an opportunity here because they, at the end of the day, recognize that the big questions of our time are affordability for the American people. "I spent a lot of time on our ranch, I pumped the diesel into our [machinery], and I can tell you that across rural America, people are hurting because of what's happening with trade and we are losing a lot of our advantage here. Agriculture is in for a very hard time in the years ahead."

Trump's pick for top law enforcement official gets crucial last-minute lifeline for confirmation

As Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche's confirmation appeared headed for sure defeat, one on-the-fence Senate Republican gave him, and President Donald Trump, a vital lifeline.

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., has remained quiet throughout this and last week on how he would vote on Blanche, who barely survived his confirmation vote from the Senate Judiciary Committee. Now, after conversations with Trump's pick to lead the Department of Justice (DOJ), the pieces are in place to confirm Blanche.

"I will vote for Mr. Blanche," an emotional Cassidy said on the Senate floor. "I'll be criticized for this vote. What's new? But the people of Louisiana can be assured that I worked hard to understand the issue and to make the right decision."

With Cassidy's green light, Blanche has a chance, even with Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., missing in action. But to be confirmed, Senate Republicans will need an assist from Vice President JD Vance. Still, it’s unclear whether the Senate will actually vote on Blanche on Friday, which could be the upper chamber’s grand finale of the summer before it exits Washington, D.C., for the remainder of August.

Cassidy explained that after a series of conversations with Blanche and former DOJ officials, including former Attorney General Bill Barr, he reached the conclusion to support Trump's pick, even after having sparred with the president since being ousted from office by him earlier this year.

He contended that Blanche has been "criticized for things over which he has no control," like Trump's pardons of Jan. 6, 2021, rioters who stormed Capitol Hill, but was still leery of his role in the nearly $2 billion anti-weaponization fund, which the president has signaled he wants to revive.

But he argued it would be better to have an attorney general confirmed by the Senate that could, if needed, stare down Trump on issues.

"I am realistic that President Trump can be unrelenting on this, but this will be true no matter who the attorney general is," Cassidy said. "And this is the rationale for having a Senate-confirmed attorney general with more leverage to push back."

TRUMP'S AG PICK SURVIVES — FOR NOW — AS REPUBLICANS QUESTION IF WHITE HOUSE DEAL WILL HOLD

It comes after Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, announced that she would not support Blanche’s nomination to be the nation’s top prosecutor and law enforcement official, dealing another blow to his rocky confirmation process.

Her defection, despite a heavy lobbying effort by Blanche that saw him make the trek to Alaska, means that Senate Republican leadership can’t afford to lose any more votes to get him across the finish line, given that Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., though now back home, has still not returned to the Senate.

Murkowski acknowledged Blanche’s visit to Alaska and heavy lobbying effort throughout the last few weeks, but it’s his connection to President Donald Trump’s nearly $2 billion anti-weaponization fund, and broader concerns of a weaponized Justice Department, that proved the nail in the coffin for her.

"The politicization — even weaponization — of the Department did not start with this administration but has accelerated during it," Murkowski said in a statement. "I take issue with the handling of the release of the Epstein files; the sweeping immunity protections granted to the President, his family, and their businesses; the statements that have been made to anti-abortion groups; and the repeated targeting of individuals ranging from former administration staff to sitting U.S. Senators."

"I am also keenly aware that the Department’s nearly $2-billion dollar slush fund—which likely would have rewarded January 6 protesters—is only off the table because this nomination is pending and the Senate has leverage," she continued. "Once we vote, that will end, and there is no telling what the future holds."

TRUMP THREATENS TO YANK HIS OWN AG NOMINEE AS GOP REVOLT GROWS

To Murkowski’s latter issue, several lawmakers on both sides of the aisle acknowledge that though Blanche and the DOJ agreed to permanently rescind the fund in writing to Sens. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., and John Cornyn, R-Texas, there’s nothing stopping Trump from reviving it.

And on several occasions, he’s made clear he wants to see it come back.

"The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration," Murkowski said. "I hope Mr. Blanche is able to achieve that, if confirmed, but I simply do not have confidence that will be the case."

Before making her decision, Trump already took a swipe at her during an interview with Punch Bowl News published Friday morning.

"I’m against Murkowski," Trump said. "I do more for Alaska than any president in history. No president’s done for Alaska what I’ve done. She’s not good."

I’ve stood on the starting block knowing the race was already rigged. I’ve touched the wall at the same time as a male competitor and been told to smile for the cameras. So when Congress names a bill the "Protect College Sports Act," I pay attention.

The Protect College Sports Act sounds great. Who wouldn’t want to protect college sports? But buried in dozens of pages about athlete compensation and coaching transitions is language that threatens existing state laws, including laws that protect fairness in women's sports.

As someone who knows firsthand the devastation of watching the trophy you spent years training to win be handed to a physically dominant male competitor, and then experiencing the shock of seeing that same male expose himself to other girls as he undresses in the locker room, I have a personal stake in making sure no other young woman goes through that. I’ve spent years traveling across the country with other athletes, sharing our experiences with state lawmakers and Congress, urging them to pass common-sense laws that keep men off the girls’ playing field and out of girls’ locker rooms.

REPUBLICAN SENATORS FILE AMENDMENT TO STOP COLLEGE SPORTS BILL FROM OVERRIDING STATE WOMEN'S SPORTS LAWS

A total of 27 states now have these laws. President Trump signed an executive order recognizing that men are men, women are women, and guys don't belong in girls' sports. Because of this work, countless young women have been guaranteed that males will not invade their sports.

But the Protect College Sports Act puts all of those laws and all of the work to pass them at risk. The same trans-activists who screamed at me in legislatures and harassed me at colleges could misuse the Protect College Sports Act to challenge every single state law defending women’s athletic competition…all 27 of them. That’s not protecting college sports for young women. It’s protecting the NCAA.

One of the critical flaws with the bill is that it limits the ability of states to enact or enforce sports eligibility rules. It's easy to envision a male who insists he belongs on a women's team misusing the bill to argue that a state women's sports law (which says males are not eligible to be on women's teams) is no longer valid.

The bill has another critical problem: It trusts the national athletic associations—namely the NCAA—to enforce state women’s sports laws.

TRUMP URGES CONGRESS TO PASS PROTECT COLLEGE SPORTS ACT BEFORE RECESS: 'WE HAVE TO GET THAT DONE'

Let’s be honest about who we’d be trusting to get this right. The NCAA has never been a friend to women’s sports. It sure wasn't a friend to me or my teammates and competitors as we watched William (Lia) Thomas stand on that podium at the NCAA Swimming Championships. The NCAA opposed state-level protections early on and only changed course after massive public outcry forced its hand.

And don’t forget how the Democrats still don’t know how to define the word "woman". Thank God President Trump does, but we have no reason to believe the next Democrat President won’t undo all of President Trump’s executive orders that have yet to be codified by Congress just as quickly as he signed them.

The bill’s supporters will tell you I’m reading it wrong. They say limitations on state laws governing eligibility should be read narrowly—that it only blocks a few specific eligibility rules, not state laws protecting women’s sports. But here’s my question: if that’s what they meant, why didn’t they just write it that way? They could fix this with a simple amendment. The fact that they haven’t tells you everything you need to know. The Democrats see the Protect College Sports Act as a Trojan Horse to appease the trans rights activists.

Pentagon plots new nuclear options for Trump as America’s biggest adversaries raise stakes: report

The Pentagon is drafting a new nuclear strategy aimed at giving President Donald Trump more options for using shorter-range nuclear weapons in a potential regional conflict with China or Russia, according to a report.

The classified effort, led by Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby, would put greater emphasis on tactical nuclear weapons — systems intended for use against military targets in a regional conflict — rather than relying primarily on long-range strategic forces, NBC News reported, citing five people familiar with the plans.

The strategy is designed for scenarios in which China or Russia attacks a U.S. ally and Washington must determine how to respond without immediately escalating to a large-scale strategic nuclear exchange, according to the report.

"Our view is that we need credible nuclear options," a senior War Department official told NBC. The official said the strategy would "expand the President’s option space by providing him with realistic and credible options and therefore strengthen deterrence."

The reported shift comes as the United States confronts two nuclear-armed adversaries with increasingly capable arsenals.

Russia retains a large stockpile of theater nuclear weapons and has repeatedly invoked its nuclear capabilities during the war in Ukraine. China, meanwhile, is rapidly expanding and modernizing its nuclear forces, creating what U.S. military officials increasingly describe as a two-peer nuclear challenge.

Tactical, or non-strategic, nuclear weapons are generally designed for theater or regional use rather than long-range strategic missions. They often have shorter-range delivery systems and may be intended for military targets.

But the label does not mean they are limited in consequence: a nuclear detonation could kill large numbers of people, spread radioactive fallout and trigger nuclear retaliation.

US FALLS BEHIND IN HYPERSONIC RACE AS CHINA, RUSSIA GAIN EDGE

The War Department has not publicly announced a change in nuclear employment policy or a new tactical nuclear weapons program. Fox News Digital has reached out to the Pentagon for comment.

The review also comes six months after New START, the last treaty limiting U.S. and Russian strategic nuclear arsenals, expired without a replacement, leaving Washington and Moscow without binding limits or inspections for the first time in decades.

The treaty did not cover tactical nuclear weapons, an area in which Russia holds a substantial numerical advantage. U.S. Strategic Command estimated this year that Moscow possesses up to 2,000 theater nuclear warheads.

Pete Crow-Armstrong angered a major baseball purist when he brought up a wild conspiracy theory that Babe Ruth did not exist.

"I was like dude, that's awesome," the Chicago Cubs star and MVP favorite said recently about hearing the theory. "We always talk about how the game is evolving, and people may as well have been under handing the ball to that guy, and he's still regarded as one of the best players ever. You might as well dive further into it and be like, well maybe he just never existed."

That quote got the attention of longtime talking head and former MLB Network host Chris "Mad Dog" Russo, who said his "derogatory" comments on Ruth "drove me nuts."

"Hey Pete, you’re talking to me now about Ruth! Nobody hit home runs like Babe Ruth. Say what you want about [Shohei] Ohtani, we understand that he’s a unicorn. "To sit there and say they were pitching underhand, well why didn’t anybody else hit the home runs hitting underhand? Outside of Gehrig, nobody hit home runs! It drives me crazy, especially in baseball, it drives me crazy when I hear today’s athletes and media guys who are 30 years old, who disparage the old-time guys."

And when you start to knock Ruth…pay attention, do your homework. That was a disgrace what he said this week."

Ruth, assuming he existed, became Major League Baseball's all-time leader in home runs on July 18, 1921, with his 139th home run - he hit 575 more to retire with 714, a record that stood until Hank Aaron surpassed him in 1974.

In 1920, Babe Ruth's 54 home runs were more than the totals of seven of the eight MLB teams in existence at the time. He did the same in his 60-homer season in 1927.

Ruth is the all-time leader in slugging percentage (.690) and OPS (1.164), becoming one of the game's greatest hitters after posting Hall of Fame numbers on the mound. Nancy Guthrie investigators see uptick in tips after ransom notes release: Sheriff

Authorities have seen an increase in tips after releasing the ransom notes that were sent to Nancy Guthrie's family.

Authorities have not confirmed the ransom notes are authentic, but their release has generated a "slight" uptick in tips, a spokeswoman for the Pima County Sheriff's Office said. The office released the full content of the alleged notes on July 31.

"Nancy Guthrie Task Force investigators have seen a slight increase in tips since the two ransom notes were released last week," Pima County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Angelica Carrillo told Fox News Digital. "All tips have been followed up on."

The alleged ransom notes were sent on Feb. 2 and Feb. 6.

"She had a white smart watch on the floor of the foot of her bed and the white flood light in backyard was destroyed," it continued.

In a follow-up message sent to the Guthrie family, the alleged ransom notes states that Nancy Guthrie has passed away.

"We did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition. We never intended to hurt her, that was not our intention. She perished shortly after she was taken. We believe it was heart related," the purported ransom note states.

'Melrose Place' star Andrew Shue says 70% believe the American Dream is 'dead or dying'

Former "Melrose Place" star Andrew Shue believes that the majority of Americans have lost faith in the promise that once defined the country.

During an interview with Fox News Digital, the 59-year-old actor, who founded the new bipartisan initiative The Forum, shared his grim assessment of the current mood of citizens in the United States, arguing that people across the economic and political spectrum are struggling.

"There's nobody in this country right now that thinks we're in a good place," Shue said. "You look around and you say, how do we feel about our kids? How do we fill it feel about our kid's future? What kind of anxiety level do we all have? You're seeing 70% believe the American dream is dead or dying."

"So we're all in this boat together," he continued. "There's nobody who's jumping out, whether you're a billionaire, a bartender, everybody in between, we are all in this together."

Shue said that Americans' growing pessimism is not being driven by a single election or political figure, but by systemic problems he believes have accumulated over decades.

"We're realizing that the engine is broken and the main systems that drive that engine are our political system and our economic system," Shue explained. "The political system only rewards people in power — there happen to be a lot of old people — and performative conflict. The economic system is really just rewarding people at the top. Ninety percent feel like they're treading water or underwater, and have been for decades. The other thing I'll say is all of these problems existed long before [current U.S. President] Donald Trump came to the scene."

It's the American people. The question is, ‘Oh, that seems kind of obvious. Yeah, the consent of the governed.’ We are the ones who are supposed to be the ultimate authority."

To help address what he sees as the country's growing divide, Shue founded The Forum, a nonpartisan civic initiative that brings together politically diverse Americans to identify areas of agreement and develop policy proposals. The initiative has already been implemented in three early primary states, including South Carolina, New Hampshire and Nevada.

"We have launched the Forum that I've been working on for the last eight years with an incredible team," he said. "It's the place and the process for the American people to co-create that renewal agenda. Over 300,000 people have participated so far. Perfectly politically balanced — conservatives showing up, liberals showing up, people on the far left, far right — everybody's showing up, and we have credibility and legitimacy."

"Elected leaders from both sides who put down their arms are actually leading the efforts in each state," he added. "So this is the way forward. The question is, will the legislators, the elected leaders, follow? The American people are ready to lead."

As the initiative has expanded across three states, Shue told Fox News Digital that he has been struck by how quickly participants find common ground despite their political differences.

"I think that the thing that surprised me the most was that when you give people this assignment, you say, 'It's now on you, you are going to be the hero of the story. All you have to do is work together, listen to each other, listen to your lived experiences, and come up with something that you can agree on,'" Shue said.

They see the common goal."

"Once you start listening to each other, once you start feeling like you're on the same team, and you have the same goal, anything's possible," Shue added. "And people are desperate. That's the thing. People are desperate. They're really ready for something new."

The Delaware native also reflected on what has restored his optimism about Americans and what they can achieve when they are united.

"That we know what makes America, America," he said. "It's about that confidence, that belief in what's possible. You know, I think [U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said it best, 'Anyone from anywhere can become anything.' And people believe that and they live that."

"America is a place — obviously we talk about opportunity — it's a place that gives everybody a shot," Shue continued. "And this is the moment where, again, we talk about the hero. This is the moment for the American people to be the heroes."

While Shue has largely stepped away from Hollywood, he said his "Melrose Place" fame has helped shine a spotlight on The Forum.

"It certainly hasn't hurt," he said. "People are a little bit confused. And then I tell them what I've been doing for the last eight years and how committed I've been to this project."

"This provides not just the pathway to create that renewal agenda, not just a pathway to create this new power source that's going to kind of break through this partisan gridlock that we have, but it's the opportunity for everybody to be part of something," Shue explained.

"If you think about even MAGA and you say, why was MAGA so strong? It's because they belonged to something," he added. "But we need to belong to something that's not about beating the other side. "The American people can do this, create that renewal agenda, and then we create the power base to enforce it. And like I said, the elected leaders are going to have to go along with it because this is the only way we can do it."

Reflecting on the personal challenges he has faced in recent years, Shue said difficult experiences have changed the way he approaches relationships and community.

"It definitely makes you try to put yourself in other people's shoes," he said. "To walk in other people's shoes is such an important part of building any kind of community, building any kind of understanding. We are all flawed. We are trying to be better people. "And those experiences, when you really struggle, and you go through something painful, it teaches you what you're all about," Shue added.

As Shue now spends his time trying to help others rediscover faith in the American Dream, he said that he feels he experienced it firsthand during his own acting career when he landed his starring role on "Melrose Place."

As Alex Murdaugh's road to his retrial heats up, his defense team has demanded a new evidence search in a bid to hunt for cracks in the prosecution's case.

In a Wednesday filing, Murdaugh’s attorneys argued that because several years have passed since his first trial, prosecutors should conduct a fresh search for any evidence that could help the defense or undermine the state’s witnesses.

His team also wants information that could be used to challenge a witness’s credibility, including misconduct records, disciplinary findings, inconsistent statements, plea deals, rewards or promises of favorable treatment.

The White House released a trove of documents showing that the FBI opened a 2017 investigation into whether President Donald Trump was acting on behalf of or under the influence of Russia when he fired FBI Director James Comey.

The investigation, codenamed "Oxferd Comma," opened after Trump fired Comey in May 2017, according to the White House’s release.

Investigators sought to determine whether Trump was "directed by, controlled by, and/or coordinated activities with, the Russian Federation in a manner constituting a threat to the national security of the United States and/or a violation of federal criminal statutes," according to an FBI memo dated May 16, 2017. The memo also said investigators would examine whether Trump or others had obstructed or conspired to obstruct an associated FBI investigation.

The opening memo cited information developed during Crossfire Hurricane, the FBI’s counterintelligence investigation into whether individuals associated with Trump’s 2016 campaign were coordinating with the Russian government to interfere in the 2016 election.

It also identified later events and information, including Trump’s interactions with Comey, the administration’s shifting explanations for Comey’s firing, Trump campaign discussions concerning the Republican platform’s language on Ukraine aid and Trump’s business ties and real estate interests involving Russia.

Trump initially cited Comey’s handling of the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state as the reason for his ouster, though he later said the Russia investigation was also on his mind when he made the decision.

The FBI memo said the circumstances surrounding Comey’s dismissal could support an inference that the bureau’s counterintelligence investigation was a factor in Trump’s decision to fire Comey.

However, the decision to open the investigation did not mean those suspicions had been substantiated.

Special counsel Robert Mueller, appointed in 2017 to investigate Russian election interference, reported in 2019 that his team did not establish coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia and did not make a prosecutorial decision on obstruction. Attorney General William Barr appointed John Durham to review the origins and handling of the FBI’s Russia investigation in 2019. Durham’s 2023 report concluded that the FBI opened the full Crossfire Hurricane investigation without sufficient evidentiary support and did not apply the same rigor it had used in other sensitive investigations.

A separate 2019 Justice Department inspector general review found the FBI had enough information under its rules to open Crossfire Hurricane, though it later identified serious errors and omissions in surveillance applications involving former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

A review of the White House’s original release shows the code name rendered as "Oxferd Comma," with the letter "o." Former acting Assistant Attorney General Jeff Clark, who served in Trump’s first administration, said a document expert he consulted concluded the "o" in "Comma" found within the FBI documents was a zero. Clark speculated the unusual spelling was intended to make the records harder to find through FOIA searches.

Senate Republicans push Election Day deadline for California's marathon ballot counts

FIRST ON FOX: A pair of Senate Republicans are bursting through a crack in the door left by the Supreme Court to force blue states like California to vastly cut down on how long it takes to count ballots.

Sens. James Lankford, R-Okla., and Mike Lee, R-Utah, are introducing legislation that would create a federal deadline for states to accept ballots received by the time polls close on Election Day across the country.

Lankford pitched the bill, called the Ballots by Election Day Act, as a bid to build more trust in the country’s elections.

"I have made fun of other states for years because there's quite a few states around the country that can't seem to figure out how to be able to count," Lankford told Fox News Digital in an interview. "In Oklahoma, our election ends at 7 p.m. on a Tuesday night."

"Usually by 9 p.m., all of our thousands of precincts are all in and counted," he continued. "We start the verification process. We do an audit after that. We have great trust in our elections because we know. We all vote. But we get them all in on that."

Lankford and Lee’s bill would create a nationwide deadline for counting absentee and mail-in ballots, meaning that if those ballots aren’t in by the time polls close across the expanse of time zones in the nation, they won’t be counted.

It targets states, like California and Washington state, where ballot counting can take days, sometimes weeks, beyond when polls close.

"States counting late ballots are inviting fraud and sowing doubt in their own election results," Lee told Fox News Digital in a statement. "Our bill will clarify protocol and restore trust by counting only ballots received before the polls close on Election Day."

Lankford contended that those states, "like California and others, New York," breed distrust in the system.

While the court contended that mail-in balloting could continue, it didn’t explicitly address that there could be no deadline for when the ballots could be counted.

"Once the court made their ruling, as that came out, they left a clear door open to say this could be defined by the United States Congress," Lankford said. "So I said, let's step in and actually do that. Let us provide some real clarity for that. This shouldn't be controversial. This should just be something to build trust in our elections."

A resurfaced 2016 interview with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani sparked conservative backlash Wednesday after critics accused him of using a "fake" Ugandan accent while promoting his mother's Disney film.

While promoting Queen of Katwe during a 2016 interview on South Africa's Kaya 959 radio station, Mamdani discussed Ugandan culture, dance and music, telling the host he was "from Uganda" but also grew up in New York.

"The difference for me is I'm from Uganda, but I also grew up in New York. In New York, you go out, some guys are very hesitant to dance," Mamdani said.

"You know, if they're not grinding, they're just standing. In Kampala, you will just not find that. People are all dancing. Everybody's dancing, men, women and it's fantastic that way."

In another post on X, The Benny Show host Benny Johnson wrote, "UNEARTHED: Zohran Mamdani does an obviously fake Ugandan accent while promoting a Disney movie based in Africa. How many Democrats have been caught using fake accents at this point? They're all frauds."

"Anyone else notice Mamdani's accent change? He must've studied at Obama University," Twitter Spaces host and conservative social media commentator Tara Bull posted on X.

The film, directed by Mamdani's mother, Mira Nair, is based on the true story of Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi. Mamdani is credited as the music supervisor and third assistant director and appears in a brief on-screen cameo.

That might go down as the greatest Hall of Fame game of the 21st century, maybe ever. You had King completing 21-of-34 for 180 yards and rushing for the game-winning touchdown, but on the other side, you had Carson Beck slinging it 15-of-19 for 188 and a touchdown. It was a classic backup QB matchup that Cris Collinsworth will be talking about the rest of his life.

There have been camps for kids that the ladies are required to run. That's right, no days off. If you thought these ladies just go to the beach and then show up Week 1 ready to roll, you're nuts.

Iran is moving its tanks. Decades as a military planner taught me what that means

During nearly five decades in uniform and as a Pentagon strategist, I served alongside armored and mechanized forces in South Korea, at Fort Riley and in divided Cold War Germany. While stationed along the Iron Curtain, I helped plan the defense against a Soviet armor-heavy assault through the Fulda Gap and across NATO's central front. Later, during the Iraq War, I observed firsthand how American armored formations were employed in combat.

One lesson stayed with me.

Military professionals rarely begin by asking what politicians are saying. They begin by asking what armies are doing.

TRUMP MAY CLAIM HE WON THE FIGHT WITH IRAN, BUT THERE’S A BIGGER WAR ALREADY UNDERWAY

Professional soldiers are trained to see what others overlook. Not necessarily because they possess better information, but because they ask different questions.

Armies reveal themselves through movement, not microphones

Politicians communicate through speeches. Diplomats communicate through negotiations. Armies reveal themselves through force posture. A brigade quietly changes location. Engineers strengthen defensive positions. Fuel and ammunition move forward. Reserve formations reposition. None of those actions guarantee war, but together they often reveal something more valuable than public statements: what commanders believe may happen next.

Throughout my career, I learned that tanks rarely tell you who is about to attack. They tell you what commanders think is coming.

What the tanks are telling us

That is why recent reports deserve careful attention. Elements reportedly associated with Iran's 92nd Armored Division moved T-72 tanks toward the southern approaches near Abadan on August 1. If confirmed, the movement matters, not because it proves an American ground campaign is imminent, but because it may reveal what Iranian planners are preparing to confront.

Professional militaries do not reposition conventional formations casually. Armor consumes enormous amounts of fuel and logistical support. Commanders accept those costs only when the movement serves a real operational purpose.

Whether Tehran ultimately employs those forces is almost beside the point.

The more important question is this: What does Iran believe may come next?

WEAPONS STOCKPILE SHORTAGES IMPACTING MILITARY STRATEGY IN THE MIDEAST

This distinction reflects the difference between military intelligence and operational planning. Intelligence assesses capabilities and intentions. Planners then translate that into a harder question: What mission does the adversary appear to be preparing to execute?

Force posture often reveals expectations more clearly than official statements, because governments can disguise intentions more easily than they can disguise preparations.

Armies rarely announce what they expect. They quietly organize for it.

Why the Artesh, not the IRGC, matters

The reported movement deserves attention precisely because it involves the Artesh rather than the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Americans understandably focus on the IRGC. It oversees Iran's missiles, drones, proxy forces and the security of the Islamic regime. The Artesh serves another purpose entirely. It is Iran's conventional army, organized principally to defend Iranian territory against external attack.

Military organizations reposition forces for many reasons: dispersing vulnerable assets, conducting an exercise, strengthening deterrence, signaling political resolve, or preparing for a changing mission. The planner's task is to determine which explanation best fits the broader pattern of events.

In this case, if accurate, the more plausible explanation is not an offensive against neighboring states, but preparation for a fight that evolves beyond today's exchange of missiles, drones and airstrikes into one over Iranian territory itself.

That observation should not be misunderstood. It does not predict an American invasion of Iran.

Professional militaries prepare for possibilities long before political leaders decide whether those possibilities become policy. Military planning is an exercise in managing uncertainty. Good commanders prepare for futures they hope never occur, because hope has never been a planning assumption.

History's warning

History repeatedly demonstrates why force posture deserves careful study. During the Cold War, NATO intelligence officers watched Warsaw Pact armored deployments almost continuously. Tanks alone never revealed Soviet intentions. Supporting engineers, logistics, artillery, bridging equipment and reserve movements often proved far more revealing.

Experienced planners learned to read military behavior the way physicians read symptoms: not as isolated facts, but as evidence of a larger condition. The task was spotting convergence, not isolated movement.

The same lesson emerged when Saddam Hussein invaded Iran in September 1980. Saddam mistook revolutionary turmoil and military disorganization for strategic weakness. He expected a rapid victory. Instead, Iran reorganized, mobilized and transformed what Baghdad expected would be a short campaign into an exhausting eight-year war. Saddam confused visible weakness with imminent collapse, a mistake strategists should not repeat when assessing Iran today.

Tanks are not obsolete

Many observers now assume the war in Ukraine demonstrated that tanks are obsolete. It demonstrated something more nuanced. Tanks operating without infantry, engineers, electronic warfare, air defense and drones become exceptionally vulnerable.

Yet tanks remain indispensable because armies still require protected mobility, mobile firepower and the ability to seize and hold terrain. Technology has changed how tanks fight. It has not changed why armies still need them.

Iranian doctrine reflects the same reality. Its armored formations are not meant to defeat American forces tank for tank. They can reinforce corridors, support infantry, protect critical sites and complicate any attempt to seize terrain or expand a ground presence. Integrated with difficult terrain, prepared positions, mines and air defense, even aging armor can delay, disrupt and raise the cost of escalation.

A diplomatic window, not a contradiction

Ironically, these reported military preparations come as diplomacy appears to be gaining momentum. Oman-mediated contacts between the United States and Iran have reportedly made progress toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz while creating an opportunity for broader discussions over Iran's nuclear program.

To many civilians, those developments appear contradictory.

Professional soldiers see them differently.

Experienced planners expect governments to negotiate while armies continue preparing for the possibility that negotiations fail. That is not cynicism; it is prudence. Military organizations exist to preserve options for political leaders should diplomacy falter, not because they expect war, but because they cannot afford to be surprised by it.

That reality now confronts President Donald Trump. Military pressure appears to have created genuine diplomatic leverage. His challenge is converting that pressure into verifiable results, freedom of navigation through Hormuz, enforceable constraints on Iran's nuclear program and greater regional stability, before demands expand into objectives airpower alone cannot deliver.

History suggests the hardest strategic decision is not when to begin military operations, but when additional destruction stops producing proportionate political gain.

What tanks teach strategists

Throughout my Army career, I learned that armies tip their hand long before they fight, not through speeches or press conferences, but through logistics, doctrine, training and force posture. Tanks are simply one part of that larger language.

Iran's aging armored vehicles may never fire a shot in this conflict. In fact, the tanks themselves are almost incidental. What matters is what their reported movement suggests about how Tehran may be thinking.

Reading force posture correctly is not simply about predicting war. At its best, it gives statesmen the understanding necessary to preserve peace before military expectations harden into military necessity.
