MIKE DAVIS: Accountability must come for Fauci and his co-conspirators

Anthony Fauci must face contempt of Congress, federal prosecution, and potentially arrest by the Senate sergeant-at-arms. And then, every state that had dealings with him should pursue charges independently.

This week, Fauci, the self-proclaimed final arbiter of science, transformed from a big man of too many words to a little one of almost none. Fauci asserted his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination when called before Congress. Congressional Republicans rightly want answers over Fauci's gross mismanagement, at best, and lies regarding the COVID-19 pandemic that disrupted billions, killed millions and destroyed millions more. Fauci refused to testify before Congress even after receiving a Biden pardon. His lawless cowardice should not end his legal jeopardy. The pursuit of justice must intensify.

For more than three years, more than a million people died. Many more wound up in hospitals and on ventilators, clinging to life. The families of those victims suffered immeasurable mental trauma. Others were forced to homeschool their children as schools stayed closed for an absurd length of time. Poor kids, often minority, without adequate home resources faced tremendous learning loss, along with years of undetected neglect and mental, physical and sexual abuse that classroom teachers would have caught. Children suffered because schools, on Fauci's recommendation, ordered students to mask up, blocking the face-to-face interaction necessary for language and social development. Other Americans lost their jobs because businesses shut down or because they refused to take the experimental vaccine Fauci championed.

Fauci told the world that the pandemic's origin was unknown; yet he suspected early on that the virus had emerged from a lab in Wuhan, China. He helped fund the highly dangerous and destructive gain-of-function research that created it. Fauci also knew that the mask mandate was scientifically baseless, as was the six-foot social distancing requirement, both of which caused severe financial and emotional devastation. He knew the potential risks of the vaccine but touted it anyway.

FAUCI PRIVATELY TOOK CREDIT FOR COVID-19 LOCKDOWNS DESPITE PUBLIC DENIAL, NEWLY EXPOSED DIARY ENTRIES REVEAL

On June 19, 2021, Fauci and Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser toured Fairlawn, a predominantly African American neighborhood east of the Anacostia River in the District of Columbia, promoting their COVID agenda. That same day, while pressuring a skeptical Black DC resident to get COVID shots, Fauci learned and hid he had suffered a pulmonary infarction – a blood clot in his lung – just a few months after receiving his COVID shots. Still, Fauci welcomed forced vaccination of employees, including through a Biden mandate the Supreme Court struck down. Fauci also backed forced vaccinations for children attending school despite their parents' well-founded objections.

Biden pardoned Fauci for all crimes Congress could have inquired about. Why, then, did Fauci plead the Fifth? Either he did not accept the pardon, or he is hiding something. His invocation of the Fifth despite a federal pardon is itself grounds for a contempt citation. Congress should cite him for contempt. The Trump Justice Department should seek an indictment and add an obstruction of Congress charge, forcing Fauci to justify his invocation in light of his pardon. It is also worth noting that Fauci's opening statement at the hearing may have waived his Fifth Amendment rights entirely, yet another avenue prosecutors should explore. Every state that had any dealings with Fauci should scour its records for potential criminal charges.

Even if Fauci received a pardon from federal crimes, those who conspired with and aided him did not. All of them must face criminal and civil investigations at the federal, state and local levels.

Federal law provides yet another avenue for accountability. Under 18 U.S.C. § 175, the Biological Weapons Anti-Terrorism Act, it is a federal crime to knowingly develop, produce or assist a foreign state in developing any biological agent for use as a weapon, punishable by life imprisonment. Gain-of-function research conducted at or funded through the Chinese-run Wuhan Institute of Virology, research Fauci's agency helped bankroll, enhanced the transmissibility and lethality of bat coronaviruses. If that research was not conducted for bona fide peaceful purposes, as the statute requires, and if the resulting pathogen escaped the lab and killed millions, prosecutors must examine whether § 175 applies. The deaths of millions demand that no legal theory is left unexplored.

Should NBA Commissioner Adam Silver step in over the WNBA's handling of the Sophie Cunningham situation?

The WNBA, through no work of its own, has seen its cultural importance and fan interest surge the past few seasons. Thanks mostly to Caitlin Clark falling into their laps, attendance is up, there's more revenue in the sport and media attention has grown exponentially.

And the league is committed to working tirelessly to squander it.

One of the other gifts the WNBA was given, again, through no work of its own, was Sophie Cunningham. Cunningham has become one of the faces of the league, to the point where a clip of her pointing her finger with an instantly-recognizable facial expression virtually took over the internet for a week. She's smart, fun, clearly has a sense of humor and turned herself into a much-improved player with 48% shooting from the field and 44% from 3-point range.

She's also stood up for Caitlin Clark when some, uh, jealous opponents have gone after her with overly physical fouls or altercations, which instantly increased her popularity among Clark's massive fan base.

Cunningham has chosen to respond to her newfound popularity and fame by demonstrating an impressive amount of courage. While many well-known female athletes, such as Megan Rapinoe, have used their platform to advocate for male athletes to dominate sports they no longer play, Cunningham told the truth.

"I think that I am here to extend love, but I also think that with love is truth, being honest, and I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport, who shouldn’t have to go against biological men," Cunningham said in a recent interview with ESPN.

An opinion shared by 80–90% of the American public, and scientifically backed by the entire existence of human biology. Unsurprisingly, this common sense statement of objective reality was extremely unpopular with much of the WNBA, including the Seattle Storm.

When the Storm played the Indiana Fever recently, one of the team's co-owners, Celeste Keaton, made profane, inappropriate remarks to fans seated courtside showing support for Cunningham. The Storm's social media account approvingly posted a photo of center Stefanie Dolson wearing a "Trans Rights are Human Rights" T-shirt ahead of the game. They had little interest in other anti-biology fans harassing young kids expressing support for Cunningham.

How did Cunningham respond to this? By being exceptionally classy, honest and inclusive.

"I truly believe there is a safe space and love for EVERYBODY. Biological girls, biological boys, trans women, and trans men. Everyone is welcome at my table! You can disagree and still be kind. Bravo to those girls for standing up for what they believe. You’ll be hearing from me soon heart emoji yay for gifts. Truly embarrassing of the co-owner. Unfortunately shows the type of leader she is," Cunningham wrote on X.

While the Storm issued a half-hearted "apology" and the league did suspend Keaton for the next five Storm home games, these minimal efforts have done little-to-nothing to repair the WNBA's tattered reputation. Nor has there been any indication that the league will make some kind of permanent change to address their individual teams making overt, divisive political statements.

And it raises the question: At what point do the NBA and Commissioner Adam Silver have a responsibility to step in?

Again, the WNBA has a golden opportunity in the current era to cement itself as a major sports league. Clark has raised its profile, and as more fans tune in to watch her play, the greater likelihood there is that they'll become fans of the sport in general, not just her.

But with many of these new viewers coming from, say, the Midwest and South, what chance is there that they'll become WNBA fans, not just Clark fans, if the league keeps demonstrating that it's openly opposed to them and their views?

OutKick asked these exact questions to media relations representatives for both the NBA and WNBA. Should Adam Silver put his foot down if more team owners go after young fans for having different views on male participation in women's sports?

Does the NBA want the WNBA as an institution, or its member teams, to be this political? Especially when those politics are so obviously and aggressively aligned with one side? Does the NBA, which subsidizes the WNBA, want it to potentially alienate fans?

Does the WNBA believe that ownership antagonizing young fans for having different views will grow interest in the league and does the WNBA believe that diversity and inclusion extends to those with different viewpoints, or is that entirely based on the league's political priorities?

At what point does politics take a back seat to business? Or does it ever for the NBA and its affiliates?

As of time of publishing, we had not received a response. Unsurprisingly. But we know what the response is. The NBA, and especially the WNBA, doesn't care. They would rather alienate fans than stop advocating for progressive ideology.

Maybe the NBA could send Victor Wembanyama or Steph Curry or Luka Dončić or Anthony Edwards or Jalen Brunson over to the WNBA and see how they do. Would that be enough to demonstrate to the league, some of its fans, and apparently some of its owners, how absurd their views are? Is there anything that matters to them other than left-wing politics?

Increasingly, we're finding that the answer is no. While the WNBA has done nothing to build Clark or Cunningham into the stars they are today, they've built a political hill, and they're clearly willing to die on it.

Watchdog unleashes database to expose 'loopholes' as $5B in foreign cash floods US nonprofits

Americans for Public Trust, a government transparency advocacy group, is releasing a new database that tracks more than $5 billion in foreign spending, bankrolling politically active nonprofits in the U.S.

The tool, the first of its kind, aims to provide a searchable database that catalogs 523 groups and 12,090 records of foreign contributions to nonprofit organizations that, under current law, aren’t required to disclose the names of their donors, stemming from provisions passed under the Tax Reform Act of 1969. The database also reinforces the cautionary warnings from some lawmakers that those contributions are having an outsized influence on American discourse.

At a hearing on the matter earlier this year, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith, R-Mo., blasted the privileges that nonprofits enjoy that he believes are being abused.

"It is clear the status quo is unacceptable. Tax-exempt status is a privilege, not a right. It exists to support legitimate charitable and educational work that strengthens our communities, not to serve as cover for foreign propaganda, election interference, or activities that undermine our national interest," Smith said in a press release.

Fox News Digital is not aware of evidence that the Department of Justice is investigating or considering charges against groups in the database with any criminal behavior.

But Caitlin Sutherland, executive director for Americans for Public Trust, thinks maybe that should change — that the law itself should change.

"That’s exactly the problem. It should be illegal for foreign influence to permeate our political system and right now it’s not. Our database is designed to give them the information they need to address these loopholes and close them once and for all," Sutherland said.

The tool allows users to search specific organizations and their contributions. It also provides a timeline of when the contributions were injected into the American scene — some as recent as the past election cycle, others stretching back to 2007.

When asked why some form of similar tool hasn’t existed until now, Sutherland said the idea of nonprofits has disguised the amount of money coming in.

"The term nonprofit, it conjures up an image of putting soup in a homeless person's bowl, vaccinating orphans. The term nonprofit does not necessarily mean helping the needy. In the United States, nonprofits have really, really morphed into these huge entities. That are engaging in lobbying and public policy," Sutherland said.

"The nonprofits of today are not what we have seen in decades past."

Sutherland also explained that because of a wide-ranging definition for what qualifies as a nonprofit, organizations have a wide latitude about what they want to do with that money.

"Foreign money can pay for get-out-the-vote drives. It can be spent on ballot harvesting. It can be spent on ballot issue campaigns, protests that are emerging across the country," Sutherland said.

Smith, the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, believes the database may soon shed light on the relationships between the groups.

"This database confirms what the Ways and Means Committee has been exposing for months: foreign money is flowing into America’s tax-exempt sector through shell funds and intermediaries designed to hide where it actually came from to influence American policymaking and our public discourse. The size and scope of the problem that Americans for Public Trust has identified is concerning, further underscoring the need to pass our legislation and close these loopholes once and for all," Smith said.

Under current law, nonprofits aren’t required to disclose the source of their donations.

Supporters of the current policy framework argue that donors could receive harassment for their contributions if they were made public. That’s the position of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a state-level think tank that advocates for free markets, limited government and federalism.

"Donor disclosure and donor privacy are very important issues. Unfortunately, instead of a focus on government transparency and individual privacy, many advocates of donor disclosure are actually attempting to pass laws that would require the disclosure of personal information—like names and home addresses of Americans—in order to intimidate these donors from contributing to the causes they care about most," the group states on its website.

"The First Amendment protects freedom of speech and association, yet many donor disclosure bills are designed to intimidate people from associating with organizations and ideas that the government may not like."

Even so, Sutherland believes voters shouldn’t have to scrape through what reporting does exist to get a sense of where foreign dollars are going. She explained that getting that documentation is especially difficult because of varying legal standards for international contributions.

"That means that we are beholden to the laws of other countries that may not necessarily have to report money out here in the United States; a list of groups that are receiving money, whereas foreign charities don't necessarily have to publish the same information," Sutherland said.

"There is no central European registry for foreign charities, so we've really put together a piecemeal collection of information relying on the foreign charities' annual reports as well as their grant databases. We think that it should be simple," she added.

Trump questions Thune's leadership as SAVE America Act stalls

For months, President Donald Trump has fixated on one legislative priority. Now, its repeated failure may be costing Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., the president's support.

Trump has badgered Republicans to pass the SAVE America Act, his missing legislative crown jewel, turning support for the bill into a loyalty test.

Thune has become the target for those irritated that the bill hasn’t moved in the Senate. For months, Trump largely spared him from criticism over the bill's stalled progress. That appears to have changed.

The hairline fractures in their relationship stem from Thune doing what few Republicans are willing to do: tell Trump no.

GOP RIFT GROWS AS THUNE HITS BRAKES ON TRUMP'S ELECTION BILL TO AVERT SHUTDOWN

"Well, that's too bad for him," Trump said when asked about Thune not having the votes to move the SAVE America Act. "I mean, that's too bad for him and too bad for the Republican Party."

"He's got the votes," he continued. "He should get it done. He should be able to get it done."

And, though he’s backed him before, Trump appeared to waver in his support of Thune when asked if he was the right man for the job.

"Well, we're going to find out, and I'll let you know," Trump said.

TRUMP THREATENS TO YANK HIS OWN AG NOMINEE AS GOP REVOLT GROWS

On his way to and from the Senate floor, Thune was pressed on Trump’s comments. When asked about Trump wavering on him as the leader of the Senate GOP, Thune signaled it wasn’t up to him.

"I don’t know what you say on that," he said. "That’s a decision made by my colleagues."

He also pushed back on the president’s assertion that Republicans could pass the SAVE America Act.

"That must be a different form of math," Thune said.

Thune has repeatedly argued Republicans simply don't have the votes to pass the SAVE America Act, a position that has increasingly put him at odds with Trump. A bloc of Republicans has never supported the legislation, while Senate Democrats overwhelmingly oppose it, leaving Thune without the votes.

TRUMP DEMANDS THUNE KEEP SENATE IN SESSION UNTIL SAVE AMERICA ACT PASSES

"I think it's wrong to blame Thune for this — Senator Thune," Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., told Fox News Digital. "This is not his fault."

Still, Thune has moved major legislation backed by the president and has the Senate on a record pace for nominee confirmations, all while dealing with vulnerable Republicans taking tough political votes and Democrats who are bound to kneecap Trump’s agenda at every turn.

"I hope that the next Congress, the people with the election certificates as U.S. senators who actually make that decision, show some independence and courage," Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., told Fox News Digital. "And recognize that Thune has helped navigate an almost impossible scenario to navigate with this president."

The legislation has been tested several times in a variety of forms, and has never gotten the needed votes to pass. And Thune has said the votes aren't there to nuke the filibuster, which Trump has pushed for throughout his second term.

Even as Trump publicly questions Thune, the Senate GOP leader intends to seek another term as the top Republican.

Leadership is elected internally by Senate Republicans, not by the president. Thune came out of a crowded field to replace Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., battling Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., to get the top spot in the Senate GOP.

And his colleagues, so far, have his back.

Scott, who ran against Thune, told Fox News Digital that he had no intention of running for the top gig in the Senate again. He also noted that even though he wanted it, it’s a difficult profession to take on.

"John's a smart guy," Scott said. "He is working really hard. So I think he shouldn’t — you know, it's tough to be the leader."

"We’ve got a lot of issues we haven’t addressed, so it’s hard," he continued. "I assumed it was gonna be hard."

Army veteran raves over Trump’s plan to ditch illegal alien truck drivers and hire vets

An Army veteran and trucking company executive who attended President Donald Trump's Wednesday announcement about a new initiative called "Freedom Haulers" at the White House praised the new plan to provide a boost to the industry.

"I came down here to support the cause of getting into an industry that is always in need," said Tom Jacques, the director of Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance at Waste Management. Jacques is also the chairman of the board of directors for the Pennsylvania Motor Trucking Association.

Jacques, whose biography says he enlisted in the Army and joined the 3rd U.S. Infantry as an escort to the President, called the plan "wonderful."

TRUMP TAPS VETERANS TO FIX ILLEGAL ALIEN TRUCKING PROBLEM PLAGUING US ROADWAYS

"It's wonderful to get skilled workers who are disciplined [and] dedicated into an industry that requires discipline and dedication," Jacques told Fox News Digital at the White House. "You don't get behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer — 80,000 pounds — without understanding the need to be disciplined and to be safe. So it's nice to have that, to tap into a large workforce as they transition out of the military and into the next career field."

Under the initiative, qualified veterans with heavy-vehicle experience gained during military service can apply to waive the CDL road-skills test, allowing them to avoid duplicating training they received in the military.

Certain veterans in participating states — 34 of them so far — may also qualify for a waiver of the written knowledge test. Veterans without military truck-driving experience will be eligible for expedited training that administration officials said could be completed in several weeks.

TRUMP PROMOTES FREEDOM HAULERS INITIATIVE TO FAST-TRACK MILITARY VETERANS INTO TRUCKING JOBS

"Data shows that truck drivers who are veterans account for 42% fewer accidents. Think of that, 42%," Trump said at the event. "And that number, they say, is their very minimal number, even as they drive double the number of miles of non-veteran drivers."

Jacques said the trucking industry is always in need of new drivers, and discussed the important role that truckers play in the everyday lives of Americans.

"If you take a look at the trucking industry, the behind the scenes, that's what gets the commodities where they're at," he said.

He also noted that during COVID-19, when non-essential workers were furloughed and much of America worked from home, truckers didn't have that option. Americans depended upon their work in order to have access to necessities, otherwise the country could have "shut down," he said.

"There's no shortage of positions for truck drivers," said Jacques. "It's an aging workforce. It's something that people need to understand that we've got to be continually replenishing that workforce, and [it's] a great opportunity getting our veterans ... into a good, highly-paying job right out of the service. It's going to be really nice to see more service members behind the wheel."

That truckers are paid well is a fact not lost on Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who also spoke at Wednesday's event.

"These are great paying jobs. They're anywhere from $80 to $100,000 plus a year," he said. "And it's important because you have men and women who drove big rigs in the military who would then get out and have to go through a months-long training for their skills and their knowledge test to drive this vehicle over here."

The initiative has another component — getting illegal alien truck drivers off the roads.

"For many years, American highways and roadways have been terrorized by unqualified illegal aliens dangerously driving big rigs," Trump said, pointing out that many illegal alien drivers can't speak English or read the road signs. "You have to have a talent for it, and these people don't have that. They're driving big rigs, semi trucks and tractor trailers, all because radical left maniacs at the state level have issued them commercial driver's licenses, even though they're not entitled to have them."

He said that last year alone, at least 30 Americans were killed at the hands of illegal alien truck drivers, and that 24,000 illegal aliens drivers have already been taken off the streets.

"So to end this, very simply, the radical left wants more jobs for illegal aliens and more migrants in 18-wheelers, Trump said. "And the Trump administration wants safer roads and more jobs for the American veteran."

Shark Week warnings as experts reveal 6 ways to reduce your risk of a shark bite

Shark sightings are common each summer from coast to coast — and though attacks are rare, they do happen.

In August, shark activity begins to ramp up as they migrate and feed along the way, often bringing different species close to shore, according to experts.

Dr. Chris Lowe, professor of marine biology and director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), confirmed there has been an increase in white shark activity so far this year.

"We expect by August, September or October to see even more sharks off the Southern California coast," he told Fox News Digital.

Wyatt Wernath, national spokesperson for the American Lifeguard Association and a retired ocean rescue chief based in Cocoa Beach, Florida, said they've seen typical numbers for this time of year, although there have been "a couple little nibbles" where people were "bit on the heels or the toes."

For those swimming or surfing in the ocean, the experts shared the following six tips to avoid a dangerous shark encounter.

No. 1: Know before you go

Before visiting a new beach, experts advise locating lifeguards and checking for shark sightings, rip currents, jellyfish and other hazards.

It's important to recognize and understand the flag systems on the beach that can signal certain conditions, Wernath noted. Red flags typically indicate high hazard, yellow flags mean heed caution and green flags mean low hazard.

A purple or blue flag indicates the presence of marine life. Combination red and blue flags signal hazardous marine life, such as a shark or dangerous jellyfish.

"If you can prepare yourself by knowing before you go, you’re going to have a much safer and enjoyable vacation or trip to the open water where the sharks live," Wernath said.

No. 2: Avoid other animal activity

Other suspicious animal activity in the water — such as fish, birds and even seals — could mean a shark is nearby.

"If you see the water percolating on the top, that's the fish running from the predators," Wernath said. "Don't go in the water, get out of the water."

"If you see birds diving into the water, and they're feeding kind of erratically, don't go into the water."

Lowe, who runs the California Shark Beach Safety Program, also recommends avoiding dead marine life that could attract sharks.

"If you're out on your surfboard and a seal climbs on your board, that seal isn't trying to bond with you. It's probably trying to get out of the water because it knows there's a big shark around," he said.

Avoid bait balls, which are dense schools of fish targeted by predators, Lowe advised. If one forms beneath your surfboard, move away to avoid an approaching shark.

No. 3: Don't stray too far from shore

While some "toe nibblers" in Florida have been known to attack on the shoreline, deep-water predators pose a risk as well, the experts warned.

California has about three shark bites per year and a fatality about every third year, according to Lowe — but numbers change as the population increases and more people seek out offshore recreation.

"When people start going out into the open ocean ... they may be encountering shark species that haven't been around people before," he said. "And therefore, you're a novelty."

Ocean spear fishing and kayak fishing are examples of "risky" excursions that have gained popularity in the last few decades, Lowe noted.

"Not only do you have a bloody fish on the end of your spear, but you're out around sharks that might not have been around people before," he said. "So, we just don't know how those sharks will react."

"If you're kayak fishing, and you've got your legs in the water, and you’ve got a bloody fish, your leg could get mistaken by an excited shark trying to steal your fish."

When diving or snorkeling, it’s important not to present yourself "as prey," Wernath warned.

No. 4: Skip dawn and dusk swims; never swim alone

Dawn and dusk are peak feeding times for many sharks, increasing the risk of encounters.

Because sharks can mistake people for prey, Lowe recommends avoiding murky water and shiny jewelry that can mimic fish scales.

The chances of being bitten are statistically lower when swimming in a group than alone, Lowe said — and if trouble arises, others are there to help.

No. 5: React quickly

During a close encounter, it's important to confirm that the animal is actually a shark, as dolphin and stingray fins can look similar in the water.

Unlike dolphins and stingrays, which typically show a single fin before disappearing underwater, sharks often reveal both their dorsal and tail fins.

"Tail fins will be moving more in a sweeping motion," Wernath said. "It won't go under gradually like a submarine. It won't arc like a dolphin in a rolling fashion."

If a shark is identified, give it space and calmly exit the water.

"Don't splash, don't cause a commotion, which will attract the shark, but just get out," Lowe said. "If you're on a surfboard or a boogie board, try to pull yourself up onto it, and just don't present yourself as prey."

"If you see the shark, always keep your eyes on it," he advised. "Follow it, track it, let the shark know you see it, turn your body toward it."

"If the shark comes closer, you can just slowly back up and keep watching it. If you lose track of it, the first place you should always look is behind you."

A shark approaching from behind is usually trying to investigate without being noticed. Once it realizes it has been spotted, however, "most of the time, the gig is up," Lowe said.

If it continues to approach, he recommends giving it "a good bop in the nose" to discourage it from coming closer.

"If the shark gets really close, I'm always an advocate of striking out at them. I think humans need to let sharks know that they're not supposed to get close to us," he added.

No. 6: Respect the species

Experts say the key to safely coexisting with sharks is respecting their habitat and behavior while avoiding actions that could make people appear to be prey.

"They're much more intelligent than we give them credit for," Wernath said, noting that they carefully assess potential prey before attacking. "They’re hunters. They're going to look around and make sure they can get to a prey without getting hurt."

The biggest misconception about sharks is that if they’re nearby, they’re going to bite you, Lowe said, adding that research proves this "simply isn't true."

Although human and shark populations have grown thanks to conservation efforts, shark bites haven't increased as expected.

"They might occasionally bite a person, but we don't really know why," Lowe went on. "We don't know if they're biting because they mistake us as food ... [or] because they feel we're a threat."

"Based on our last six years of data using drones, we see white sharks around people pretty much every day, and they seem to largely ignore people," he added. "What that clearly tells me is that humans are not on any shark's menu."

Medicare is one of America’s greatest successes — and a fiscal time bomb

Anniversaries are a time to celebrate accomplishments. They are also a time to take stock. As Medicare turns 61 this month, we should do both.

Start with the celebration, because it is deserved. When Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law on July 30, 1965, only about half of Americans over 65 had hospital insurance and nearly a third lived in poverty. Growing old in this country carried a real risk of being sick and broke at the same time. Today, coverage for older Americans is essentially universal, and 69 million people depend on the program. It is one of the most successful things our government has ever done — and I say that as someone who spends most of my working hours cataloging things our government does badly.

Now the taking stock, which is harder. Medicare has two major problems: the part of Medicare that can run out of money is about to, and the part that can't is quietly taking over the federal budget.

First the basics. Most Americans believe they prepaid for Medicare through a lifetime of payroll taxes. It is a reasonable belief. It is wrong.

All in, payroll taxes, premiums, and other dedicated receipts cover only about half of what Medicare costs. Part A, hospital insurance, is the only part of Medicare financed by the payroll tax, through contributions to the Hospital Insurance trust fund. Parts B and D are not. By statute, beneficiary premiums are set to cover roughly a quarter of those costs — in practice they covered about 22% last year — and general revenue covers nearly all the rest. Because Washington borrows heavily, a meaningful share of that general revenue is actually debt.

The more pressing problem is that the Hospital Insurance trust fund is going to run out of money. Because it has a fixed revenue source rather than an annual top-up from the Treasury, depletion triggers automatic cuts in what Medicare can pay providers. The trustees put depletion in the second quarter of 2033; the Congressional Budget Office's assumptions stretch it to 2040. Under the trustees' timeline, incoming payroll taxes would then cover 89% of scheduled Part A benefits — an immediate 11% cut in what Medicare pays hospitals.

3 STEPS THAT COULD STOP FRAUD AND MAKE HEALTHCARE MORE AFFORDABLE FOR ALL AMERICANS

Seniors' benefits are not what gets cut. The hospitals they depend on are, and some hospitals, particularly in rural and underserved parts of the country, already operate on an extremely thin margin. The trustees price out the fixes as well, for 75-year solvency: raise the Medicare payroll tax from 2.9 to 3.46% today, cut Part A provider reimbursements by 12% today, or blend the two. Waiting does not make that menu easier or cheaper.

Meanwhile, the overall cost of the program is projected to balloon. Medicare spent about $1.2 trillion last year. The trustees project roughly $2.5 trillion by 2035 — a climb from 3.9% of the entire American economy today toward 6.5% by 2050. Part of that is demographic: 4.5 workers paid in for every beneficiary at the program's start, and fewer than three do today. But the larger driver is the cost of caring for each individual beneficiary, which is growing faster than the economy that funds it. In the Congressional Budget Office's latest outlook, enrollment growth adds 20 percentage points to Medicare's spending growth over the coming decade, while rising cost per beneficiary adds 41.

That is what the second problem looks like from inside the federal budget. Over the next decade, Medicare will be the single largest source of growth in federal spending other than interest on the national debt. Every other major federal health program shrinks as a share of the economy. Medicare does not.

None of this is a surprise to anyone in Washington. The Medicare trustees have formally notified Congress and the president, in writing, nine years running — and Congress and the president have done nothing.

In 2003, Congress built itself an alarm system to warn when Medicare spending and revenues were getting dangerously out of balance. If the trustees ever project that general revenues — not payroll taxes, not premiums, but the government's ordinary tax dollars — will have to cover more than 45% of Medicare's costs within seven years, they are required to say so formally. Two such determinations in a row trigger a "Medicare funding warning." And the warning is not advisory. By statute, the president must send Congress remedial legislation within 15 days of his next budget, and Congress must take it up on an expedited basis.

The trustees issued that warning again in June. And this year the 45% line is not crossed somewhere out in the seven-year window. It is crossed now, in fiscal 2026, the first year of the projection.

Exactly one president has ever answered the letter. That was in 2008. No legislation responding to any of these warnings has ever been enacted.

The answer is not simply a bigger check or a smaller one. Medicare's finances will need both additional revenue and slower cost growth, because neither alone closes the gap — and slower cost growth means confronting what actually drives spending per beneficiary, including how we pay providers, what we pay for drugs, and what we pay for Medicare Advantage plans. Protecting Medicare and practicing fiscal responsibility are not competing goals. They are the same goal.

None of this is easy, and governing was never supposed to be easy. But we have now spent nine years treating a statutory alarm as background noise. Medicare has kept its promise for 61 years because the people who built it were willing to do hard arithmetic in public. The best birthday present we could give it is to heed the warning and do the math.

Radio host Charlamagne tha God argued Thursday that Dr. Anthony Fauci, repeatedly invoking the Fifth Amendment during his Senate hearing this week after being pardoned, was "suspicious" if he did nothing wrong.

"Now, listen, I'm stupid, OK? I just want y'all to know that. I will say I never understood why Dr. Fauci needed a pardon if there was no crime committed or nothing was done wrong," Charlamagne said during "The Breakfast Club" show.

"And when you think of every conspiracy theorist that accused him of everything from creating or covering up the virus, the profiting from mandates and vaccines, it does look suspicious that he won’t answer questions," he added. "And the language. How can somebody trap you if you’re not doing nothing wrong? Like, you can’t trap me if I’m not doing anything wrong. What am I gonna say?"

Charlamagne's co-hosts defended Fauci's use of the Fifth Amendment, pointing out that it was on the advice of his legal counsel and that he didn't have "malicious intent."

"Y’all don’t think it’s fishy that he got a pardon? Why did he need a pardon?" Charlamagne fired back.

"I just feel like no one can trap you if you’re not doing anything wrong, you know what I’m saying?" he later added. "I’ll sit down and answer any question if I know that I’m clean."

His co-hosts argued that former President Joe Biden pardoned Fauci, along with members of his family and the Jan. 6 committee, out of concern that they would be prosecuted by incoming President Donald Trump. Charlamagne conceded the point but remarked that it won't stop critics.

Fox News Digital reached out to Fauci for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

Biden issued Fauci, who served as the chief architect for the government's COVID-19 guidelines, a full and unconditional pardon for all actions taken between Jan. 1, 2014, and Jan. 19, 2025. Biden's broad pardon protected Fauci from prosecution for the actions being investigated by the committee, leaving only the possibility of charges if he lied under oath.

Because of this sweeping pardon, legal experts have debated whether Fauci had the right to refuse to answer more than 100 questions during Wednesday's Senate hearing.

KFC founder's personal belongings fetch thousands at Kentucky auction

More than 70 personal belongings once owned by KFC founder Colonel Harland Sanders sold at auction Tuesday in Shelbyville, Kentucky, drawing collectors from across the country and online bidders eager to own a piece of fast-food history.

The collection included items from Sanders' personal and professional life, from handwritten notes and recipe cards to his signature clip-on bow tie and the 1964 planner that sparked one of the night's biggest bidding wars.

"They had all of this in basements and closets and everything, and decided it was time to let the world, who loves the man, have an opportunity to buy the memorabilia," Bill Menish, owner and lead auctioneer with The Menish Group, told Fox News.

Among the night's top-selling items was Sanders' 1964 planner, which sold for $30,000.

One collector and former employee of the Colonel said the planner stood out as the most fascinating item in the auction.

"Probably that planner, I would imagine," the buyer said.

Menish said the planner generated additional buzz because of a handwritten note on the back.

"But then on the back, for some unknown reason, there's 11 herbs and spices," he said.

While collectors came for the memorabilia, many of the items also documented how Sanders built Kentucky Fried Chicken into one of the world's best-known restaurant brands.

"When he introduced the pressure cooker, which was never intended for fried chicken, he turned it from 30 minutes to 10 minutes," Menish said. "And that's what really revolutionized his ability to service the fast food growing industry."

Colonel Sanders' family member Elizabeth Pitchford attended the auction to watch pieces of her grandfather's legacy find new owners.

"I really wanted to see the people who were going to be purchasing my grandpa's stuff," Pitchford said. "The items that have been around for so many years, and it's just been overwhelming."

KFC PLANS TO TEST A NEW PROTOTYPE CALLED OPEN HOUSE

The memorabilia auction may be over, but another part of Sanders' legacy is still up for grabs.

His former home, Blackwood Hall, and his wife's restaurant, the Claudia Sanders Dinner House, are being offered through a sealed bid process, with offers due Friday at midnight.

The restaurant opened after Sanders sold Kentucky Fried Chicken and remains one of the landmarks tied to the family's history.

Kate Middleton is 'indispensable' to royal family as slimmed-down monarchy faces mounting pressure: expert

Kate Middleton has become one of King Charles' most beloved family members, with one royal expert calling her the "monarchy's greatest asset."

The claim came from Vanity Fair royal correspondent Katie Nicholl, co-host of "The Royals Uncensored." After more than 20 years covering the royal family on tours and engagements, Nicholl said she has spoken to countless palace insiders, many of whom are enchanted by the Princess of Wales.

"I think Catherine, the Princess of Wales, has always been a very valuable asset to the royal family," Nicholl told Fox News Digital. "She is the commoner who married into the royal family ... [She has made] a seamless transition into that unique world of royalty. It's not easy ... There's a huge amount of sacrifice that goes into being a member of the royal family."

"Catherine's had to give up a huge amount, and yet she does it all with a great deal of grace and dignity, always with a smile," Nicholl said. "So she is absolutely the monarchy's greatest asset."

Nicholl also noted that "the king adores her, and the queen adores her."

Royal experts told Fox News Digital that Charles and Kate have forged an even deeper bond since both were diagnosed with cancer. Buckingham Palace announced the king's diagnosis in 2024. In December 2025, Charles shared the "good news" that his treatment would be scaled back in 2026.

Just weeks after the king's announcement, Kate revealed in March 2024 that she was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. She completed chemotherapy that September and announced in January 2025 that she was in remission.

British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard told Fox News Digital that the king, 77, had been greatly inspired by the Princess of Wales' strength.

"King Charles sees enormous value in Princess Catherine," Chard said. "Not just as the wife of his heir, but as the cornerstone of the monarchy itself. He genuinely loves his 'darling' daughter-in-law. His face lights up when he is with her. They share similar interests, and they have shared a similar cancer journey, one that has created a deep bond and understanding that goes beyond duty."

Chard argued that it hasn't just been Charles who quickly realized that Kate represented the monarchy's future.

"The late queen saw it too," Chard said. "She recognized Catherine's superpowers early on — her ability to listen, find solutions and bring calm to difficult situations."

"King Charles fundamentally views his time on the throne as stewardship," she said. "He sees himself as the caretaker of the institution and is acutely conscious of preparing the next generation. Collaborative preparation between the king and his heir is essential. Having Princess Catherine as the wife of his heir, Charles has struck gold."

Royal author Sally Bedell Smith previously told People magazine that Kate is "like the daughter he never had."

"He has always had a very strong bond with her," Smith told the outlet. "He shares with William an impulse to protect her. They are in this together, Kate and the king."

When Kate made her diagnosis public, Buckingham Palace said Charles was "so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as he did."

Author Christopher Andersen previously wrote in his book "Kate!" that the king was by Kate's side "to lend his cherished daughter-in-law moral support" during her health battle.

Kate's advocacy work following her cancer diagnosis continues, Nicholl told Fox News Digital.

"Thankfully, despite a serious health issue, she has overcome that," Nicholl said. "We've just seen her climb the three highest peaks in the United Kingdom to raise money for the Royal Marsden. She's turning her experience into something positive, and I think that's earned her a great deal of respect among the British public, along with a lot of love and affection. People are very much behind her and William."

Chard echoed those sentiments.

"Princess Catherine connects with people in a way that restores faith in the monarchy," Chard said. "She has learned every aspect of the institution over many years and has blended in carefully without fuss. Princess Catherine is central to the institution's success, and King Charles knows this."

With a slimmed down monarchy, Charles needs key allies now more than ever. His younger brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, stepped back as a working royal in 2019 following his controversial ties to late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Charles has since formally removed Andrew’s princely title and HRH style.

In 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, stepped back as senior working royals and later settled in California.

"Princess Anne and other senior working royals are all stretched thin — and none of them are young," author Catherine Mayer previously told People magazine. "William and Catherine carry the whole thing."

Sources told the outlet there had been "even greater attention and expectation on the Waleses." Still, royal experts told Fox News Digital that Kate is well-positioned to support the king.

"Naturally, King Charles recognizes the value of Kate, who is indeed the monarchy's greatest asset," Richard Fitzwilliams told Fox News Digital. "We should add, 'together with her partnership with William and their family.' While we praise Catherine's many strengths, William is the future king. She will one day be queen consort. They see themselves as a close-knit couple."

"William is currently at the center of reports that he and the king differ over how to handle Prince Harry, in particular," Fitzwilliams said. "As she showed when the Sussexes met with the king and Queen Camilla, she fully supports William's approach."

As William and Kate prepare for their future roles, they are likely to remain under close public scrutiny. With Charles' support, royal experts believe the couple is well-positioned for the years ahead.

"It’s not at all surprising King Charles and Princess Catherine have bonded," British royals expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News Digital. "One can tangibly feel the public also values her wonderful assets from the reception she always receives when in public, as well as in opinion polls. She has become indispensable and has won the public’s trust."

"Charles can depend on Catherine because she is consistent, steady and modern in her approach to family, shaped by her upbringing and dedication to duty," Fordwich said. "She handled the strain of her cancer battle with dignity, without any indication of self-pity."

"One can observe from the body language between Charles and Catherine that they are so comfortable together, derived from the time they spent together during their cancer battles."

Bombshell voting scandal adds to pattern of noncitizen voters as Trump warns of threat to ‘heart' of democracy

New Jersey Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s recent announcement of 6,600 ineligible voters found on the state’s rolls is only the latest in a decades-long string of cases involving noncitizens registered to vote in U.S. elections, records show.

Sherrill said that the ineligible voters were registered due to a "serious software error" in New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle System. Her announcement came within a week of a major address from President Donald Trump in which he warned that digital election interference posed a "cyber threat aimed at the very heart of our democracy."

While New Jersey is the latest documented failure, it is not an isolated anomaly. New Jersey's error adds to a 25-year record of state reviews, software failures and prosecutions that found noncitizens on voter rolls and, in some documented cases, casting ballots. Experts say the episodes establish a recurring vulnerability. However, due to the lack of a national standard for identifying and reporting errors, reviews are sporadic and use different methods, making it impossible to determine how widespread the problem truly is.

"It's a major vulnerability," Jason Snead, executive director of the conservative think tank the Honest Elections Project, told Fox News Digital. "And we have seen just within the last couple of years many states that have checked their voter rolls and found non-citizens on them … So, this is a big problem."

NEW JERSEY REMOVES 6,600 PEOPLE FROM VOTER ROLLS WHO WERE ELIGIBLE TO CAST A BALLOT FOR 2024 ELECTION

According to New Jersey’s preliminary findings, fewer than 400 individuals who were improperly registered ended up voting. Sherrill said they lived all across the state and mostly lacked a party affiliation, though there were some registered as Democrats or Republicans.

Fox News Digital reached out to the New Jersey Secretary of State Division of Elections, state Attorney General Dale Caldwell and the chairs of several key legislative elections' oversight committees for clarification on which elections the 400 ineligible voters participated in and to request details on the state’s auditing protocols. Fox News Digital did not receive a response from any of the state officials mentioned above.

Snead explained that though states are required by law to ensure their voter rolls are up-to-date and accurate, there is no uniform federal requirement for a state to disclose its findings. He said that this has led to differences across states in how the law is enforced and how errors are reported.

"There are federal requirements to maintain clean and accurate voter rolls. And of course, it is a federal crime for a noncitizen to register and to vote, but there's no requirement that a state report how many non-citizens that they have found up to the federal government. That's entirely a state law question," he explained.

He argued that problems involving noncitizen voting are greater in blue states due to policies he said make it easier to cheat.

"When you look at the policies that are pushed in blue states by the left, things like automatic voter registration, giving driver's licenses to illegal aliens, banning voter identification laws, no proof of citizenship to vote on and on and, this is the inevitable outcome of all of those policies," said Snead, adding, "This is not the first time that we've seen a state with automatic voter registration add potential non-citizens to the rolls."

After the president’s speech, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin released a statement announcing that preliminary DHS reviews of state records found "as many as" 250,000 noncitizens registered to vote in four states: 35,152 in New Jersey, 190,832 in California, 15,903 in Nevada and 14,576 in Pennsylvania.

Fox News Digital reached out to DHS for clarification on its preliminary findings. However, DHS did not answer Fox News Digital’s questions and instead sent a statement from Mullin reiterating the number.

In the statement, Mullin emphasized to Fox News Digital that "this shouldn’t be a red or blue state issue: ONLY Americans should elect American leaders." He added that "we’ve put these governors on notice. States must work with us to ensure free, fair, and honest elections."

Charles Stewart III, a professor of political science specializing in elections at MIT, explained that the controlling federal law governing voter registration, the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), is "silent on the issue of noncitizens on the roll."

He told Fox News Digital that because "this was not an issue in the early 1990s … one of the ambiguities right now and controversies is over precisely what sort of obligations states have to audit their rolls for noncitizens."

"This is really at the crux of the matter and two of President Trump's executive orders. It's the crux of the matter in the Save America Act. It is the crux to the matter in the current efforts, well, back to the executive orders and a lot of the lawsuits. And the states are pointing out, when being pressed by the federal government, that yes, it is illegal for noncitizens to vote, for sure, and states should have an obligation to make sure noncitizens are not registering, but there is no federal law that compels states to do investigations, nor is there a federal law to compel them to report.

Meanwhile, states that have published review results have reported concerning findings. Besides New Jersey, state reviews conducted since 2020 have found evidence of significant numbers of noncitizens registered to vote in Louisiana, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio and Illinois, a Fox News Digital review found.

Earlier this year, the Louisiana secretary of state said that using the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database, which was rolled out by the Trump administration last year, the state identified 403 noncitizens on its voter rolls, 83 of whom had voted in elections, American Press reported.

In 2025, an audit by the Iowa secretary of state confirmed that 277 noncitizens were registered to vote and that 35 successfully voted in the 2024 election while five attempted to vote but were rejected.

The same year, the Michigan Department of State published its findings from a review of the 2024 election, which it said proved that "credible cases of noncitizens casting a ballot in Michigan elections are extremely rare." The review found that 15 people, who it said "appear to be non-U.S. citizens," cast a ballot in the election. Additionally, the department identified a Chinese national who allegedly voted illegally.

The Ohio Secretary of State's Office announced in 2024 and 2021 that it had identified 597 and 117 apparent noncitizen voter registrations, respectively, and referred the cases for further investigation.

According to findings cited in Illinois legislation and testimony by secretary of state officials before the general assembly, a programming error in the state's automatic voter registration system allowed the records of 574 people who identified themselves as noncitizens to be transmitted to election officials between 2018 and 2019.

Further, officials in Pennsylvania, Texas, Maryland, Colorado, Florida and North Carolina have also reported cases of noncitizens being registered to vote as far back as 2000.

In testimony given to the Pennsylvania House State Government Committee in 2017, then elections commissioner Jonathan Marks revealed that the state had found 1,160 records of apparent noncitizens who self-reported and canceled. Marks said that a deeper analysis of the years 2000 through 2017 found 544 ballots were cast by the identified registrants.

In Texas, authorities discovered a resident alien named Rosa Ortega registered in 2002 and voted five times from 2004 through 2014, according to Attorney General Ken Paxton.

In another case, a Ghanaian national named Michael Nana Baako registered to vote in Maryland, swearing that he was a U.S. citizen in 2005 and subsequently voted in 10 federal elections between 2006 and 2018, according to the DOJ.

A 2012 report by the Colorado Department of State revealed that the state identified 3,903 registered voters whose citizenship status was "in question." An additional 430 Colorado voters were found to have identified themselves as ineligible to vote because of citizenship requirements.

The report noted that in Colorado "no proof is required to validate the status indicated on a registration form." It said that individuals can register to vote at a driver’s license office, state public assistance office, county office, private voter registration drive, or even online, none of which verify citizenship.

Three reviews conducted by the Florida Department of State for the years between 2013 and 2017 identified 821 noncitizen registrations and 126 people with voting histories.

Meanwhile, a 2017 state audit in North Carolina concluded that 41 legal-status noncitizens cast ballots.

Fox News Digital also reached out to the Justice Department to ask how many individuals the agency has charged with noncitizen voting or unlawful voter registration since 2000. However, a spokesperson for the DOJ did not offer specifics. Instead, the spokesperson sent Fox News Digital a statement assuring that the department’s Civil Rights Division "is investigating and will keep pressing states to clean their rolls" and is "prosecuting cases where the law and evidence support it."

The DOJ spokesperson reiterated that "it is illegal for any noncitizen to vote in a federal election" and that "every unlawful vote dilutes the voice of American citizens."

"Whether or not a case is prosecutable doesn't change the fact that the wrongful vote happened — DHS found over 250,000 likely noncitizens on voter rolls nationwide, and New Jersey's own Governor confirmed 400 noncitizens voted there," the spokesperson said.

"The fact of the matter is that election after election after election after election happened and no one did anything about it," remarked Gene Hamilton, president of America First Legal.

He pointed to a letter sent by the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division to election officials in all 50 states which he said, "reminded them of their obligations and the possibility of legal consequences for not taking action."

Since President Donald Trump's return to office, the Civil Rights Division has filed lawsuits against 30 states and the District of Columbia seeking to compel the production of full voter registration lists under the NVRA, according to the Brennan Center for Justice.

"There are ways to fix it," said Hamilton. "It's just a matter of desire."

The family of Tyler Wilkin is exhaustively trying to track down the person responsible for killing him in what was described as an execution-style shooting.

The 35-year-old Ohio native was found shot dead with a gunshot wound to the back of his head while on a camping trip on Playa La Selva in Luquillo, Puerto Rico.

His body was found on July 10.

"The howling struck me as possible stalking behavior," Copenhaver told Fox News Digital. "If you're camping and hear those noises in the middle of the night, you're naturally going to grab a flashlight and investigate. I think it's possible someone intentionally lured him away from his campsite."

Taco Bell offers $1 Mexican pizza, other lettuce-free deals to win back customers after outbreak

Taco Bell is offering steep discounts on lettuce-free menu items as the fast-food chain works to recover from the business impact of the cyclospora outbreak.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite known to cause cyclosporiasis, the hallmark symptom of which is diarrhea, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Cases linked to the multistate cyclospora outbreak began surfacing in May.

The FDA said its traceback investigation identified shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms and sourced from central Mexico as the likely source of the outbreak.

Although the FDA later said a laboratory test on one lettuce sample was a false positive, the agency said its epidemiological evidence continues to support the recall of Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce.

Nine states reported cases of cyclosporiasis linked to Taco Bell.

Taylor Farms announced that it was "voluntarily removing all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market," the FDA reported, and Taco Bell announced in mid-July that it completed the removal of affected Taylor Farms lettuce from its restaurants.

Foot traffic at Taco Bell has dropped each day since July 13, Reuters reported.

Shares of parent company Yum! Brands have fallen nearly 10% since July 10, according to reports.

In the wake of the outbreak, Taco Bell has been offering discounted items that exclude shredded lettuce, the ingredient tied to the outbreak investigation.

Earlier this week, Taco Bell announced on Instagram that it would be offering its fan-favorite Mexican pizza, which is lettuce-free, for $1 for one day at participating locations. The promotion followed a $1 deal on Enchiritos and $1 regular nacho fries (for rewards members using the app), both lettuce-free menu items.

A Mexican pizza typically costs about $5.69 and contains seasoned beef, refried beans, two crispy flour tortilla shells, Mexican pizza sauce, diced tomatoes and a blend of mozzarella, pepper jack and cheddar cheese, according to Taco Bell's website.

An Enchirito is priced at $4.29, though prices vary by location. The item is made with a warm flour tortilla filled with seasoned beef, refried beans and diced onions and is smothered in a red sauce and melted shredded cheddar cheese, according to Taco Bell.

Taco Bell has been using social media to communicate with customers about the outbreak. Taco Bell CEO Sean Tresvant wrote a letter posted on LinkedIn "to every Taco Bell fan."

Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, doubled down Thursday on his criticism of Dr. Anthony Fauci after the former top health official declined to answer questions during a Senate hearing, calling him Democrats' "hero."

Appearing on "Hannity" Thursday evening, Moreno argued Fauci's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic was driven by a desire for power rather than public health.

"This is about controlling American people," Moreno said. "He treated us like lab rats."

Moreno said Fauci's approach to the pandemic reflected what he believes Democrats ultimately want from government.

Moreno and Fauci clashed during Wednesday's Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing after Fauci, on the advice of counsel, invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and declined to answer questions from committee members.

Asked Thursday whether he stood by those remarks, Moreno argued Fauci's influence set back children's health for decades and devastated small businesses.

"The reality is this guy damaged a lot of things in this country," he said.

"This is one of the most depraved bureaucrats," Moreno said, adding that Fauci should face prosecution over his handling of the pandemic.

Although Fauci received a pardon from former President Joe Biden, Moreno noted that state investigations remain possible. On Thursday, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced his office would open an investigation after Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right during Wednesday's hearing.

"We know what he was actually thinking," Moreno said. "We know he lied to the American people. State attorneys general, like the one in Florida—I hope the one in Ohio does the same thing. We got to pursue this guy."

Moreno said the moment that bothered him most during the hearing came when he asked Fauci to apologize to audience members who said they were harmed by or disagreed with pandemic policies.

Trump admin cannot refuse detained illegal immigrants a chance for release on bond, appeals court rules

A federal appeals court on Thursday ruled that the Trump administration cannot deny migrants detained inside the U.S. a chance for release on bond as part of its expanded mandatory detention policy.

In a 2-1 decision, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled against the administration.

Four other appeals courts have also rejected the policy, although the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans and Eighth Circuit in St. Louis have ruled in favor of the federal government.

The deepening circuit split raises the chance that the U.S. Supreme Court will eventually take up the case. The administration asked the high court last month to consider the case.

The Department of Homeland Security said it "strongly disagrees with the Ninth Circuit panel and is confident in its legal position regarding mandatory detention."

"President Donald Trump and Secretary Mullin are now enforcing the law as it was actually written to keep America safe," the department said in a statement.

Under previous administrations, most illegal immigrants with no criminal record who were arrested inside the U.S. were allowed to seek a bond hearing while their immigration cases were pending, and mandatory detention was typically reserved for those detained at the border.

But last year, the government issued guidance expanding mandatory detention to include illegal immigrants inside the U.S. The move was part of the president's mass deportation plan, leading to several lawsuits by immigrants pursuing a release from custody.

Some federal judges who ordered bond hearings criticized the administration for repeatedly violating their orders.

The administration has said that Congress changed immigration law in 1996 to allow mandatory detention past the border and that previous administrations failed to enforce that measure.

But Ninth Circuit Judge Daniel Bress, who was appointed by President Donald Trump, rejected that argument.

"Although no reading of the complicated and interrelated textual provisions at issue here is without some shortcomings, the historical understanding of the statute is the better one," said Bress, writing for the majority.

ICE lodges detainer for illegal immigrant accused of trying to disarm Virginia police officer

Federal immigration officials have lodged a detainer against a Honduran national accused of attempting to disarm a police officer during an encounter in Northern Virginia.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is asking Fairfax County officials not to release Nehemia Noel Fuentes-Banegas after authorities said he ambushed a Fairfax County police officer Tuesday.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), officers responded to a report of a man who left a home in Annandale following an argument while allegedly armed with two knives.

Fairfax County police said the man also stabbed himself before leaving the residence and fleeing into a nearby wooded area.

As officers searched a wooded area, Fuentes-Banegas allegedly emerged from the brush, grabbed an officer's firearm and attempted to disarm the officer, DHS said.

Fairfax County police said one officer fired his service weapon while a second officer simultaneously deployed a department-issued Taser. The bullet grazed Fuentes-Banegas' shoulder, police said.

Fuentes-Banegas was arrested and charged with attempted disarming of a law enforcement officer. ICE has lodged a detainer requesting that Fairfax County notify federal authorities before his release.

According to DHS, Fuentes-Banegas entered the United States illegally through Texas in 2022 and was later released under the Biden administration.

"This criminal illegal alien from Honduras attacked a law enforcement officer and attempted to take the officer's gun," DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.

"He has now been charged with attempted disarming of a law enforcement officer," she continued. "ICE is calling on Governor Abigail Spanberger and her fellow sanctuary politicians to commit to not releasing this dangerous criminal from jail."

DHS blamed Virginia's sanctuary policies for limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities, arguing they have made the commonwealth "a magnet for illegal alien crime."

The department noted that Spanberger signed executive orders at the start of her administration ending former Gov. Glenn Youngkin's 287(g) agreements and limiting state cooperation with ICE.

DHS also pointed to the recent arrest of Raul Genesis Ortiz Moran, a Mexican national charged with second-degree murder and aggravated sexual battery in connection with the death of a 2-year-old girl in Louisa County.

"This horrific tragedy was completely avoidable because this illegal alien should have never been in our country. Governor Spanberger’s sanctuary policies have made Virginia a hotbed for illegal alien crime," DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis previously told Fox News Digital.

We naturally seek out people who agree with us. That's comforting but it's also dangerous. The best financial decisions are often sharpened by someone willing to ask, "What if you're wrong?"

Someone with nothing to gain

Good advice is easiest to trust when the person giving it isn't earning a commission, selling a product or benefiting from your decision. Every major financial move deserves at least one truly objective opinion.

Someone with experience

Financial markets change. Tax laws change. Human behavior doesn't. Someone who has lived through multiple recessions, bull markets, housing booms and crashes has perspective that no spreadsheet can provide.

A professional who knows what you don't

Even successful people have knowledge gaps. Tax planning, estate strategies, insurance, investments and business succession all require specialized expertise. Knowing when to ask for help isn't weakness. It’s wisdom.

Behavioral finance has repeatedly shown that emotion is one of the biggest enemies of good decision-making. Fear causes people to sell at the bottom. Greed convinces them to chase investments after they've already skyrocketed. Pride keeps them from admitting a mistake.

The problem usually isn't intelligence. It's emotion. That's why perspective is so valuable.

One of the biggest myths in America is that financial independence means doing everything yourself.

It doesn't.

It means building a team that helps you make better decisions.

John Adams, our second president, wrote those words more than two centuries ago, yet they are relevant today. Adams understood that free societies are not destroyed only by foreign enemies. America's Founders spent years studying history and learning from the greatest political, economic and philosophical thinkers who came before them. They deliberately created a constitutional republic built upon limited government, fiscal responsibility, individual liberty and the protection of the unalienable rights to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

That framework produced the most prosperous and powerful nation the world has ever known. For nearly 250 years, it has survived wars, economic crises, political upheaval and countless challenges because it rested on principles that valued freedom and restrained government.

Looking only at today's economy, it is understandable why many Americans see little cause for alarm. Jobs remain plentiful. Financial markets have reached impressive highs. Millions of Americans have accumulated substantial wealth. While inflation and high interest rates continue to strain many families, the United States remains the dominant force in the global economy. America still appears remarkably strong.

So, what is the problem?

The greatest threat to our future is hidden in plain sight. It is discussed by economists, fiscal experts, scholars and government officials, yet it barely registers with most voters. The danger is our ever-expanding national debt, which grows larger every year while Washington takes no meaningful action.

The warning signs have been visible for years. Long before the debt reached today's staggering levels, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen warned in 2010 that, "The most significant threat to our national security is our debt." Every year the federal government's own financial reports acknowledge that America's fiscal path is "unsustainable." The experts recognize the danger. The numbers confirm it. Yet elected officials continue spending trillions of dollars annually we do not have, as though there will never be consequences.

Today, the national debt is approaching $40 trillion, and annual deficits continue to add another $2 trillion to $3 trillion each year. This is not merely an accounting problem. It is the slow accumulation of obligations that eventually become impossible to honor. Like the victim of a thousand cuts, the damage appears manageable. Each year of borrowing seems OK. Eventually, however, the cumulative effect becomes fatal.

History repeatedly demonstrates that no great nation remains strong after abandoning fiscal discipline. Empires have risen and fallen throughout history, and financial collapse has been the key reason for their decline. More recently, Greece ignored similar warnings until its debt crisis spiraled into economic disaster. Greece was fortunate because the European Union possessed both the capacity and the willingness to provide assistance, which saved it.

The United States will have no such rescue. Our economy represents such a large share of the world's financial system that if confidence in U.S. debt were to collapse, there would be no outside institution capable of rescuing us. The consequences would extend far beyond our borders and would be far worse devastation than the Great Depression.

America's debt now exceeds 125% of Gross Domestic Product, a level that economists have long viewed as dangerous. Each year the federal government must refinance trillions of dollars in maturing debt while simultaneously borrowing trillions more to cover annual deficits. In 2025 alone, roughly $10 trillion in borrowing will be required to roll over maturing debt and finance ongoing deficits, making the debt ratio climb further. That strategy depends entirely on lenders continuing to purchase U.S. debt at affordable interest rates.

The day investors lose confidence and begin demanding significantly higher interest rates, or worse, begin questioning America's ability to manage its finances, there are no good options. The fiscal crisis that follows would unfold rapidly and would be catastrophic.

This outcome is not inevitable. It can still be avoided, but only if the American people understand the magnitude of the threat and insist that Washington act before the crisis arrives. When the next crisis comes, it will be too late.

Citizens must understand what the numbers mean, why the current trajectory is unsustainable, and why delaying action will cause irreparable harm. America has overcome enormous challenges throughout its history when we had responsible leadership. We citizens must demand that now or vote for someone who will address this problem.

Adams warned that democracies would eventually commit suicide. Whether his warning becomes America's future depends not on politicians, but on every citizen willing to listen, think, learn and act before the thousand cuts become one too many.

There’s a moment in the homebuying process that always stands out for me. It’s at closing when, after countless pages have been signed, my clients take their new keys and start the next chapter of their lives. I’ve helped clients buy and sell thousands of properties during my real estate career. Yet that moment never loses its meaning because it’s the embodiment of the American Dream — of unlocking opportunity and a brighter future.

At the 250th anniversary of our founding, however, the path to homeownership has grown far harder than it should be. From inventory to insurance and regulatory hurdles, there are very real affordability barriers preventing buyers from entering the housing market.

Making the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act a law is a massive step in the right direction, but there is more work to do, and we need to maintain momentum. Homeownership puts families on the path to intergenerational wealth, strengthening our economy and the social fabric of our nation. The most important part is to now act on the opportunity.

THE AMERICAN DREAM NOW COMES WITH A ZIP CODE: HERE'S WHERE STARTER HOMES ARE STILL WITHIN REACH

Americans across the board increasingly recognize the importance of homeownership. A recent national poll of voters commissioned by NAR found that 85% of respondents say owning a home is part of the American Dream, up from 79% who were asked that same question in 2013. It’s understandable why: homeowners have 40 times the net worth of renters. In fact, home equity and retirement accounts represent over 60% of American households’ net worth.

Yet, too many barriers to homeownership exist. Sadly, this isn’t new. My father had to contend with redlining and discriminatory covenants, conditions and restrictions. But his persistence in the face of prejudice laid a groundwork of intergenerational wealth through homeownership and real estate investment. In doing so, it expanded what was possible for our family.

My father built a business as a REALTOR®, bringing that transformative power to others, and my brother and I followed suit. We saw firsthand how homeownership strengthens families, communities and the economy. This is the thread that ties my family’s story together and countless others.

THE SURPRISING HIDDEN COST QUIETLY ADDING NEARLY $132K TO NEW HOME PRICES REVEALED

Now, to fix today's problem, it helps to identify it clearly. Ten years ago, there were 1.65 million available homes, and buyers could lock in a mortgage rate at 3.7%. Today, inventory stands at just 1.18 million homes, despite 20 million more people living in the United States, and mortgage rates are hovering north of 6%.

This is a concerning reality. As president of the National Association of REALTORS®, I’ve watched the path to homeownership grow longer and steeper. Our 2025 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers shows that the median age of a first-time buyer is 40, the highest on record in the United States.

This is also personal for me. My own children are in their 20s, I know the struggles of first-time buyers trying to break into the market due to the lack of affordable homes. I see it when I counsel young people looking for a pair of house keys to call their own.

There is no quick fix. But there is a path forward — one that requires taking on the full set of forces shaping the housing market. This means addressing financing, expanding supply, tackling rising insurance costs, zoning restrictions, protecting access to inventory and breaking down barriers that keep Americans from owning a home.

This is one of the reasons why NAR was such a full-throated supporter of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. It took immense effort on the part of many stakeholders, representing the kind of comprehensive action that can expand the dream of homeownership to more Americans.

In every ZIP Code across the country, this law gives communities new tools and resources to plan and build for growth, streamlining federal processes that delay construction, and updating financing options for manufactured and rural housing. It’s a package of nearly 50 individual bills that together will make an impact for years to come.

But now is the time to step on the gas when it comes to addressing federal, state and local policies that have adverse effects on homeownership. Take rent control as an example: we know that affordability is a real concern, but these rent control measures do not work, discouraging investment and limiting housing supply.

That’s why we worked alongside state and industry stakeholders to successfully challenge the statewide rent control ballot measure in Massachusetts, advocating instead for policies that expand housing availability and improve affordability over the long term.

A similar rationale underpins our ongoing advocacy against the "Home Equity Tax" that is freezing our housing market. Current capital gains exclusion levels haven’t been updated in nearly 30 years or indexed to inflation.

The result is that more and more middle-income Americans fall victim to this tax each year and choose to stay put, with first-time buyers and families facing higher prices. Through new original research, polling and advocacy with policymakers, we're making the case that modernizing these thresholds would help unlock existing housing supply and improve opportunities for buyers. This legislation would have immediate effect and is the fastest way to get more homes on the market now.

At its core, homeownership is about more than having a place to call your own. It’s a foundation for financial stability, wealth building and community well-being. It drives economic strength. The numbers back this up; real estate represents nearly one-fifth of U.S. GDP, and each home sale produces $125,310 in local economic activity and generates two jobs. It’s that straightforward.

At our nation’s 250th anniversary, I am clear-eyed about the challenges that homebuyers and sellers face. But I’ve never been more optimistic about the power of real estate and the impact it can have. It’s time to make homeownership more accessible and affordable. The keys are within reach.

The San Francisco 49ers’ receiving corps took an early training camp hit as Ricky Pearsall’s knee injury became a growing concern.

That uncertainty led San Francisco back to a familiar name. Former All-Pro wide receiver Deebo Samuel agreed Thursday to return to the 49ers on a one-year deal worth up to $7 million, ESPN reported.

Samuel's NFL career started in the Bay Area after the 49ers spent a second round draft pick on the South Carolina standout in 2019.

Mystery stranger vanishes after family says frantic warning saved their lives during devastating house fire

A mysterious stranger is being hailed as a hero after waking a sleeping Las Vegas family, helping them escape a predawn house fire and then disappearing before anyone could learn his name.

The family is now searching for the man they say pounded on their front door, screamed "Fire!" and even grabbed a garden hose to battle the flames before quietly leaving, hoping to thank the person they believe saved not only their lives, but their neighbors' lives as well.

The fire broke out shortly before 5 a.m. on July 5 at the family's home in the Las Vegas Valley.

Speaking with Fox News Digital, homeowner Danna Shabtai said she had gone to bed after asking children across the street to stop setting off fireworks near her home on the night of July 4. Hours later, at 4:51 a.m., she woke to someone frantically ringing the doorbell and pounding on the front door.

"My dog started barking, so I woke up, and I stumbled to the door," Shabtai said. "I opened the door and the gentleman was yelling, 'Fire! Fire!'"

"He pointed toward the back of the house, and I turned around, and I could see the French doors to the backyard. I just saw orange — like a wall of orange."

After realizing the fire was far more serious than she initially thought, Shabtai said her sister grabbed the family's garden hose and rushed outside to fight the flames while she scooped up her 14-month-old son and ran next door to wake her neighbors.

"I started banging on their windows and their door, trying to make noise, like, 'Wake up! Wake up!'" Shabtai said.

She said two women joined her in pounding on the neighbors' door until everyone inside made it out safely.

Meanwhile, the stranger grabbed a hose from the neighboring home and tried to keep the flames from spreading.

"He went to those neighbors' house and grabbed their hose from the front yard, and he was trying to put out their fire," Shabtai said. "So not only did he wake us up, he was trying to put out the fire with my sister."

Shabtai believes the man's actions prevented an even greater tragedy.

"If he wasn't driving by at that time, I don't know. It would have been a lot worse before we would have even noticed or woken up that there was a fire," she said.

The family has since taken to social media in hopes of identifying the mystery man so they can thank him in person.

"You're an angel. You saved our lives, and I'm really thankful for everything that you did," Shabtai previously told Fox 5 Las Vegas. "You didn't have to stop. You could have driven by and said, probably someone already called it in. But no, you took the time, and you woke us up, and you're a hero."

Speaking directly to the mystery man, Shabtai thanked him for stopping when others may have driven by.

"You saved probably two households and a bunch of pets because it would have been way too far gone before we would have realized," she said. "You saved our lives. You're a hero."

Shabtai said she believes the fire began after children across the street continued setting off fireworks despite being asked to stop.

She said she heard debris landing on a neighbor's gazebo and believes she saw a glowing ember drift over a roof toward the neighboring property before everyone went to bed. She believes the ember may have smoldered for hours before igniting the fire, though officials have not determined an official cause.

In a Facebook post after the fire, Shabtai credited the unidentified passerby with saving multiple families and expressed frustration over what she believes caused the blaze.

"This is why you leave fireworks to the professionals," she wrote. "This guy who just happened to drive by saved our lives and our neighbors' lives. Next year I'll be standing outside with my garden hose and hosing down any feral kids lighting up fireworks in my neighborhood."

She later shared a video of the aftermath, writing that while her family was fortunate to remain in its home, others were not.

Spain deploys military after thousands of migrants overwhelm border enclave, at least 18 dead

Spain is deploying its military to the North African enclave of Ceuta after thousands of migrants overwhelmed the territory's border with Morocco, prompting a major security response as officials confirmed at least 18 people died during the crossings.

The Spanish government said the armed forces will support the Civil Guard in restoring order after local officials warned the city could no longer handle the influx. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska are expected to visit Ceuta as Madrid scrambles to contain the crisis.

The surge marks one of the largest migrant waves to hit Ceuta since 2021, when more than 8,000 people entered the Spanish territory over two days, triggering a diplomatic dispute between Spain and Morocco.

"The situation is absolute chaos," Rachid Sbihi, who heads an association representing Spain's Civil Guard officers in Ceuta, told The Associated Press. "It's not possible to give precise numbers, but there are thousands of migrants crossing."

Video from the area showed large groups of migrants entering Ceuta through the Tarajal border area, with many arriving by swimming around coastal barriers separating Morocco from Spanish territory. Most appeared to be young men, though families with women and children were also among those crossing.

Spanish authorities said Morocco is cooperating with efforts to regain control of the border. Spain's Interior Ministry said Moroccan police have intercepted numerous migrants attempting to cross and that both governments are working to return those who entered the territory illegally as quickly as possible.

Authorities have not identified a single cause for the sudden surge, though Ceuta officials have pointed to a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling that limits the immediate return of migrants who arrive by sea without due process. Some migration advocates, however, questioned whether the ruling alone could explain the dramatic increase, arguing many migrants would likely have been unaware of the decision.

The crisis has reverberated beyond Spain. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni threatened to suspend Italy's participation in the Schengen open-border agreement with Spain, saying the move would be necessary "to defend our borders and ensure the safety of our citizens."

Spain's Interior Ministry said nearly 3,000 migrants had entered Ceuta by land or sea this year through mid-July, before this week's crossings dramatically increased those figures.

Houston Rockets forward Tari Eason has filed for a domestic violence restraining order against his ex-girlfriend, 32-year-old Marilyn Maritza Melo Rodriguez, alleging she physically assaulted him, destroyed roughly $92,000 worth of his clothing and threatened to kill him.

According to court documents obtained (via TMZ), Eason says he drove Rodriguez home at her mother's request. After arriving, the two got into an argument, during which Eason alleges Rodriguez punched him in the face with a closed fist.

According to the filing, Rodriguez didn't leave the dispute behind. Eason alleges she went to his Airbnb residence and poured liquid bleach over his prized designer garments, causing roughly $92,000 in damage.

The filing also describes an alleged phone call from one of Rodriguez's associates. According to Eason, the caller warned that Rodriguez would "break both of my legs" and "kill me."

The 25-year-old has averaged 10.4 points and 6.3 rebounds over his career.
