Popular pastime sending more Americans to ER with devastating injuries

The Detroit, Michigan, metro area is reporting an uptick in serious incidents related to electric bikes (e-bikes).

Fox 2 Detroit reported that police are seeing a rise in e-bike crashes, while doctors say they're treating a growing number of related injuries.

These incidents have reportedly led some communities to seek restrictions on e-bikes or to ban them altogether.

Some e-bikes can reach speeds of up to 28 miles per hour, increasing the potential severity of crashes on sidewalks and streets.

Fox 2 Detroit spoke with emergency room doctor Robert Sherwin of the Detroit Medical Center, who reported seeing everything from minor injuries to major trauma related to e-bike incidents.

"These Class 3 bikes are probably more like motor vehicles," he said. "They travel up to 28 miles an hour, and a lot of riders aren't expecting that, might not be experienced in that."

"These e-bikes are heavier than regular bikes, and they travel much faster, but the human body doesn't change just because a bike has a motor."

Fox 2 Detroit also spoke with local bike shop owner John Hughes, who suggested the "real issue" has always been sharing the road with cars.

"Cars aren't looking out for bikes ... people don't respect bikes as a form of transportation, and that's where it gets dangerous."

Hughes continued, "There's a ton of traffic out there. Everyone is on their cell phones. They're texting and driving constantly."

E-bike rider Cam Cason told Fox 2 Detroit that he takes his e-bike to work and school, crediting it as a "very efficient way" to get around.

"Way better than a car, in my opinion," he said. "When you don't have to spend $30 or $40 just to get some gas, use the electric bike to get where you need to go."

As concerns over e-bike safety grow nationwide, states are beginning to tighten regulations. In New Jersey, a new law enacted this year requires e-bikes to be registered, and riders must be at least 15 years old and possess either a valid driver's license or an e-bike license to operate one.

The law was enacted amid growing concerns about e-bike crashes, including the death of a New Jersey teenager. Supporters argued that licensing, helmet and registration requirements would promote responsible riding and reduce bodily harm.

NYU Langone Health released an advisory in April on the surge in brain and spine injuries related to e-bikes and scooters among riders and pedestrians in New York City.

According to a study published in the journal Neurosurgery, medical emergencies involving pedal-powered and electric bikes and scooters accounted for nearly 7% of trauma patients admitted to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.

One-third of the 914 patients treated for injuries involving pedal-powered and electric bikes and scooters suffered a traumatic brain injury. More than two-thirds required hospital admission and about 30% needed intensive care.

Physical harm linked to electric bikes and scooters increased from less than 10% of cases in 2018 to more than half by 2023, according to the study. The most common cause of injury, accounting for about half of all cases, was a collision with a car or truck.

Fewer than one-third of riders wore helmets, which was linked to a "significantly higher rate" of brain and facial injuries. The study found that 20% of patients tested positive for alcohol, which was associated with more severe head trauma and lower rates of helmet use.

Pedestrians struck by electric vehicles suffered brain injuries at nearly twice the rate of riders, according to an analysis of 69 pedestrian cases.

Corresponding author Hannah Weiss, MD, a resident in the Department of Neurosurgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, commented in a statement that these findings suggest "micromobility injuries are producing serious brain and spinal trauma that demands neurosurgical care at a scale we haven’t seen before."

"In a busy urban setting, we are seeing more and more of these injuries firsthand," she went on. "The data point to actionable solutions – helmet use, safer bike lane design and enforcement – that could prevent many of these injuries and better protect both riders and pedestrians."

Paul P. Huang, MD, associate professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and chief of neurosurgery at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, added that the study highlights that "urban infrastructure must continue to improve to keep pace with the rapid rise of electric bikes and scooters."

"Future studies should track these injuries across multiple cities and measure whether protected bike lanes, helmet programs and speed enforcement actually reduce the number of brain and spine surgeries we perform," Huang said.

Berlin Pride attack suspect killed in police confrontation: AP

A suspect in the attack at Berlin's Pride festival that left one person dead and at least 29 others injured was killed during a confrontation with police in a nearby suburb, The Associated Press reported, citing authorities.

German authorities on Sunday launched an intensive manhunt for Abdul Ballout, a German citizen with Lebanese roots. Ballout was killed following a nearly 24-hour search. Prosecutors said he had previously sought to join the militant Islamic State group.

"Everything we see here points to us dealing with an Islamic terror attack," German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said.

The minister said the suspect had previously come to the attention of authorities for multiple crimes, as well as his "radicalization and belonging to the Islamist scene."

Dobrindt said Ballout was born in Germany and that his mother became a naturalized German citizen in 2002, three years before he was born. He said the suspect previously received a suspended prison sentence of one year and 10 months but did not disclose what he had been convicted of.

Police said a white van drove into a crowd in Berlin's Tiergarten park around 10 p.m. on Saturday before crashing into a tree. Authorities say the suspect then attacked several people with a machete before fleeing.

A woman was killed, while three people suffered life-threatening injuries and eight others were seriously hurt, according to Berlin's fire service. Dobrindt said at least 29 people were injured.

The attack happened a few hundred yards from Berlin's annual Christopher Street Day Pride celebration — one of Europe's largest LGBTQ+ events — but not on the parade route or at the festival's closing event near the Brandenburg Gate. Investigators said the victims appeared to include both Pride attendees and other people who were in the park.

Organizers stopped the celebration shortly after the attack, cutting off a live performance and urging people to leave the area.

Police spokesman Florian Nath earlier said the suspect was known to investigators because of his alleged ties to Islamic groups in Berlin.

He is known to us as a member of Islamic circles here in Berlin, and our search for this person is proceeding at full speed," Nath said, according to The Associated Press. "We still have no information whatsoever regarding his specific motives, the exact sequence of events, or his role in the crime itself."

Police searched several locations across Berlin overnight and into Sunday, including an apartment in the Schöneberg district. It was not immediately clear where the confrontation happened.

CNN panelist blames 'culture war' retribution as reason for Ryan Clark's ESPN departure

After it was first reported by OutKick that Clark would be among a collection of on-air talents let go by the four-letter network Tuesday, July 21, the story shifted focus to a combination of cause and blame around the situation, and not the termination itself.

Clark was told the news on Monday during a taping of ESPN's 'NFL Live' after OutKick had obtained the information and had asked the network for comment. ESPN acted in such a manner, telling Clark during a taping, in an attempt to keep OutKick's Dan Zaksheske and Bobby Burack from breaking the story.

In his first public comments following his ouster, Clark accused ESPN of intentionally leaking the news to OutKick. The fact that OutKick obtained the information hasn't exactly sat right with at least one CNN contributor.

During 'CNN This Morning' on Sunday, Jason "Jah" Lee raised questions about the situation as a whole while also pointing to Clark getting caught up in a "culture war" leading to his demise at ESPN.

"OutKick is owned by Fox News Corp and was established by Clay Travis. If you know Clay Travis, he is not a bleeding-heart liberal. I feel a lot of this was purposefully done to embarrass Ryan Clark. ESPN has taken a lot of heat for being a liberal bastion lately, and I feel like perhaps [Clark's] bosses thought this was a time to push the other direction."

TikTok influencer who accused estranged husband of pedophilia found dead in possible murder-suicide

TikTok influencer Sara Gilson, also known as Sara Duffey, posted weeks ago alleging that her husband was a pedophile. The estranged couple has since been found shot to death in the woman's Oklahoma home in what is reportedly believed to have been a murder-suicide.

Gilson, who had recently filed a protective order against her husband, 48-year-old Jeremiah "Shawn" Duffey, posted the TikTok video on July 11. It was captioned, "Preparing for when Netflix drops a documentary about my soon to be ex husband who I just found out is a pedophile." The video was still visible on her account as of Saturday.

Thirteen days after she posted that video, police reportedly responded to a domestic call on July 24 at 41-year-old Gilson's home. When officers arrived, they found Gilson and Duffey dead from apparent gunshot wounds, according to local outlet KTUL.

KTUL cited an extended family member who identified the pair as the dead bodies in the home and said that Jeremiah, who went by Shawn, allegedly broke into the home, killed Sara and then himself. Police insisted there was no threat to the public at this time, according to KRMG.

Authorities also said that the 911 call came from a juvenile in the house, the local media outlets reported.

On the same day she filed her protective order, another woman filed for a separate protective order against Duffey after he was allegedly spotted "kissing and fondling" her 15-year-old daughter, who played on the youth basketball team Duffey coached, according to The Oklahoman.

Gilson had also filed two previous protective orders against Duffey, though both were dismissed after Gilson failed to appear at the hearings, People reported.

The latest Internal Revenue Service (IRS) migration data show billions of dollars in taxpayer wealth flowing into Texas, while Census figures show the state's largest metropolitan areas continue to outpace much of the country in population growth, strengthening a decades-long shift in America's economic center of gravity.

What's more, Texas isn't relying on a single boomtown. Dallas-Fort Worth added more residents than any metropolitan area in the country over the past year, while Houston, Austin and San Antonio also ranked among the nation's fastest-growing metros.

That unusual breadth gives Texas multiple engines of economic growth, providing businesses with larger labor pools, diversified industries and a broader customer base than states anchored by a single dominant city.

BILLIONS IN TAXPAYER INCOME ARE LEAVING TWO ICONIC STATES — AS A NEW ECONOMIC MAP EMERGES

The population boom has been accompanied by an influx of wealth. IRS migration data analyzed by the Tax Foundation show the Lone Star State gained more than $5 billion in adjusted gross income from interstate movers, while California and New York recorded multibillion-dollar losses.

Black bears invade Lake Tahoe homes as break-ins surge and locals fortify defenses

Black bears are increasingly breaking into homes around Lake Tahoe, leaving residents to spend thousands of dollars protecting their properties from hungry wildlife.

So far this year, South Lake Tahoe police have received 174 bear-related calls, compared with 97 during the same period last year, according to The Wall Street Journal. Several incidents involved bears making their way into homes.

One local couple told the publication they were washing dishes when they looked up to find a bear standing in their living room.

The animal wandered through the house, sniffed a tube of toothpaste in the bathroom and urinated on the floor before leaving. It was the couple's second bear break-in within the span of a month, the publication said.

As encounters become more common, some homeowners have begun installing electric mats, reinforced doors and other deterrents that can cost thousands of dollars.

Resident Margaret Deanesly Ziegler has installed everything from electric deterrents to a steel door to protect her summer cabin from bears, spending about $7,500 in the process, WSJ reported.

"I heard the most god-awful noise," the retired physician told the publication. "I heard the house being wrenched, the wood being torn apart."

"The bears are winning," Ziegler said. "I'm the one that's spending the money."

Similar encounters have occurred across the Lake Tahoe Basin in recent weeks.

Fox News Digital previously reported that a California man deployed bear spray after a black bear charged toward him outside his vacation home over the Fourth of July holiday. He spotted the animal rummaging through a garbage can inside his garage.

Video of the encounter captured the bear rushing toward the homeowner before he deployed the spray, sending the animal running away.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife notes on its website that black bears are "highly food-motivated" and naturally investigate attractive smells in search of food.

The department recommends eliminating food attractants and blocking access to them with bear-proof containers, electric fencing or electric mats. It also warns that bears accustomed to human food can become increasingly bold and destructive, while cubs often learn those behaviors from their mothers.

The increase in encounters has also sparked debate among Lake Tahoe residents over whether bears or people are driving the problem.

"We don't have a bear problem, we have a people problem," one Reddit user wrote.

Another resident shared that a bear broke into their home earlier this year despite keeping trash secured, writing that they eventually installed bear mats because "it's just the price we pay to live side by side with bears."

Others said bears have remained a routine part of life around Lake Tahoe and that conflicts can often be avoided.

"Bears have been fine in my neighborhood," one user wrote. "Don't leave food or trash out and they just wander through."

Mamdani's politics linked to Muslim Brotherhood ideology as New York violence escalates: report

On Tisha B'Av, the saddest day in the Jewish calendar marking the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem and the long history of catastrophes that followed, an assailant armed with a knife walked up to two men on Manhattan's Upper West Side and stabbed them. One wore a yarmulke.

Witnesses said the assailant shouted, "Allahu Akbar." The victims, ages 50 and 57, survived. A suspect is in custody, and police are examining the motive. But New York City did not need to wait for a formal designation to understand the gravity of the crime that had been perpetrated.

Only a day earlier, Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of the city with the largest Jewish community in the Diaspora, released a video accusing Israel of war crimes and genocide — and declared that Benjamin Netanyahu, the elected leader of the region's only democracy, should be arrested.

SUSPECT ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY YELLING ‘ALLAHU AKBAR,' STABBING 2 MEN IN NYC ATTACK

The mayor of an American city has no such power. Municipal leaders are forbidden by law from carrying out their own foreign policy. Nevertheless, Mamdani’s public relations stunt, amplified not only on social media but by the media of record, used language decrying the Jewish state as a criminal enterprise and suggesting that its defenders are fair game, setting the stage for bloodshed.

Jewish organizations had warned that the climate in the city was becoming dangerous. Their prescient warnings became prophetic as police officers cleaned up the crime scene.

It would not be appropriate to claim that any politician placed the weapon in the hands of the man who allegedly stabbed two innocent New Yorkers while attempting to terrorize the American Jewish community.

JEWISH LEADERS FAULT MAMDANI RHETORIC AS UPPER WEST SIDE STABBING, HATE CRIME PROBE CONTINUES

I contend something far more uncomfortable and dangerous: words and ideas lead to such actions, and a public culture that brands the Jewish state as genocidal or apartheid and treats "resistance" as a virtue normalizes a permission structure — in the dockets of justice and in the halls of power — in which such violence becomes thinkable.

This is the argument of a report that the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism & Policy (ISGAP) published on Mamdani in 2025. It is the argument that the events of this week have tragically underscored.

The report traces the origins of Mamdani’s worldview. As a student at Bowdoin College, Mamdani co-founded a chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine. In the aftermath of Oct. 7 — the largest single-day massacre of Jews since the Holocaust — he downplayed the atrocity while characterizing Israel's legally justified defensive response as genocide.

FAR-LEFT STREAMER HASAN PIKER DEFENDS HIMSELF FROM ANTISEMITISM ACCUSATIONS IN INTERVIEW WITH JEWISH OUTLET

He repeatedly declined to condemn the slogan "globalize the intifada," offering only that he would "discourage" its use, as though a call to export anti-Jewish violence to the streets of America were merely a matter of etiquette. He introduced legislation to punish New York charitable institutions that support Israel. His first act as mayor, before addressing police unions and garbage collection, was to remove the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism from the city’s lexicon.

He accepted a $100,000 donation from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, an organization identified by federal prosecutors as an unindicted co-conspirator in a terrorism-financing case, and he has associated with figures such as Imam Siraj Wahhaj, who served as a character witness for the man convicted of masterminding the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

These are not stray data points. His close friend, influencer Hasan Piker, and political candidates Mamdani has openly endorsed assert that the United States deserved what it got on Sept. 11, 2001 — a travesty as we prepare to honor the 25th anniversary of the attack on New York City itself. Mamdani’s words and actions form a dangerous pattern, and that pattern has a name: the Muslim Brotherhood.

ISGAP research on the Brotherhood's strategic entryism into North America describes a century-long campaign that its own internal documents lay out plainly. "The Project" of 1982 and the "Explanatory Memorandum" of 1991 — evidence entered in federal court — describe a strategy the authors call "civilization jihad": to exploit the freedoms of Western democracies to hollow them out from within, patiently, over generations, until the host society no longer recognizes what has been done to it.

Front organizations advise governments, shape civil-rights policy, embed themselves in universities and cultivate media, all while presenting a moderate face. Qatar underwrites much of it. Students for Justice in Palestine and American Muslims for Palestine sit within this ecosystem, and Hamas, which calls itself the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood and which the U.S. has designated a foreign terrorist organization, is what the ideology produces.

The Brotherhood is Sunni; the revolutionary regime in Tehran is Shia. On almost everything else, they are rivals, yet they converge on one project: the destruction of Israel and the humiliation of the West. When an American mayoral candidate adopts the same moral and political map, in which Israel is the aggressor and its enemies are the aggrieved, he is not dissenting bravely from consensus. He is translating a dangerous ideology into the fluent, sympathetic idiom of Western progressivism, where it does its most effective work precisely because it no longer seems foreign.

This is why the antisemitism at the center of Mamdani's politics cannot be waved away as a mere progressive ideology. Antisemitism is the oldest early-warning system a society has. It begins with Jews, and it never ends there. The same worldview that marks Jews as obstacles also marks pluralism, free exchange and the liberal democratic order itself as enemies. An assault on the Jews of New York is an assault on the idea of New York, on the essence of the American democratic experiment.

Listen closely to how Mamdani talks about his own city. The wealthy, landlords and the "billionaire class," in his telling, are a shadowy few who hoard the city and lock everyone else out. The language is reminiscent of Der Sturmer and the films produced by Joseph Goebbels. Presented as economic justice, this is familiar and dangerous rhetoric.

The oldest antisemitic libels have always relied on the image of a rich, rootless minority pulling the strings while ordinary people suffer. When a politician's economic populism runs on the same rails as his hostility toward the Jewish state, the two are not unrelated. They draw from the same well. This is why the assault is not merely on Jews or Israel. It is on the very fabric of the U.S. — on the idea that a free society is built through commerce, contract, and pluralism rather than resentment, expropriation and the search for an enemy within.

A man was knifed outside a synagogue on the saddest day of the Jewish year in a city whose mayor spends his energy accusing the Jewish state of genocide. We must say clearly what connects the rhetoric to the risk, refuse the normalization of hatred dressed up as social justice, and insist that words that prepare the ground for violence be named for what they are before the next knife is drawn.

It was a bit of a dull weekend on the diamond. I haven't been all that impressed with the matchups. Usually, baseball has some really good pairings for the weekend, but now and then, there aren't too many impressive series. I do like the Seattle and Texas one, but we've covered them once, and I don't have a great read on the game today. So, I'm going with the other game that I like - New York vs. Philadelphia.

The New York Yankees are just two games back in their division, but for whatever reason, it feels like this team is on the verge of a collapse. Maybe I'm exaggerating here, but something about the conversation from the media is that the Yankees are falling apart. I don't quite see it, but they do have a very talented roster on the injured list, so maybe that's the issue. The good news for them is that Ben Rice is having a fantastic season, their players could all return healthy in plenty of time, and they are still a likely playoff team.

The Yankees are looking for a sweep today, and they send out Will Warren to get the job done. Warren has been fine this year. He has been reliable, tossed a reasonable number of innings, and hasn't missed any time due to injury. He did, for some reason, pitch for less than an inning in relief on Wednesday. His numbers are seven wins and four losses, with a 4.00 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. Philadelphia hitters have seen him 31 times and gotten eight hits, with only Kyle Schwarber launching one over the fence.

The Philadelphia Phillies have been one of the better teams in baseball this season. They are 5.5 games back of the Braves at the moment, but this was a division that looked like Atlanta would lock up by the end of May, so this has been some progress. Looking at the team and players' statistics, the one thing that has stood out to me is that Schwarber leads them in homers, Brandon Marsh leads in average, and Bryce Harper leads in RBIs. It isn't just that three different guys lead them in three different categories; it is that there are even more on the team having really strong years. They have six guys hitting .240 or better.

It shouldn't be surprising that a good team has players performing well. Part of what makes the Phillies so dangerous is their ability to not need just one guy to carry the load. In the rotation, I will say one guy, tonight's starter, does seem to be carrying his weight and then some. Christopher Sanchez is having another solid year with a 12-4 record, 2.64 ERA, and a 1.19 WHIP. Sanchez has been fantastic at home with a 1.03 ERA as well. Honestly, the only bad home start he has had was the All-Star Game. Yankees hitters are hitting just .200 against him in 45 at-bats.

I'm sure we can find a player prop if you're looking for that sort of thing. Ever since sports betting became legal basically everywhere, I feel like the daily fantasy stuff is not as popular. Maybe it is, and I'm just not paying attention. Either way, Cody Bellinger is someone you might want to add on the team, and Ryan McMahon is someone to fade.

For the game, there are two options here - the Phillies, despite losing the first two games of this series, should win tonight. Sanchez has been great in Philadelphia. Paying -193 for them to win is not something I'm interested in. Instead, I am going to take the Phillies on the Run Line tonight. I've made this point before and need to follow it more. The Yankees have had 25 1-run games this year, and the Phillies have had 27. In 105 games, that's less than 25% of their final scores being decided by a run. Give me the Phillies -1.5.

Everyday Revolutionary War heroes take center stage in Trump's 'Spirit of '76' exhibit

EXCLUSIVE: Beneath a towering 23-foot bronze figure holding the Declaration of Independence aloft, designer Matthew Taylor stopped beside an equestrian statue that many Americans have likely never seen, or even heard of.

"Most Americans have never heard of Caesar Rodney," Taylor told Fox News Digital during an exclusive tour of the new Spirit of '76 exhibition at Freedom Plaza. "But we owe this man an enormous debt of gratitude."

The temporary installation, unveiled as part of America's 250th anniversary celebration, transforms Freedom Plaza into an open-air gallery honoring Revolutionary War figures whose names rarely appear in history textbooks.

Commissioned by President Donald Trump, the exhibition features 22 statues and sculptural installations, including a restored equestrian monument of Rodney, a towering "Spirit of Liberty" centerpiece, bronze figures representing Revolutionary soldiers, and an immersive memorial honoring Americans who died aboard British prison ships during the Revolution.

According to the National Park Service, the exhibit was created to honor the "heroes and martyrs of the Revolution" during America's semiquincentennial and is intended to celebrate the enduring "Spirit of '76' that continues to live on in every American heart."

The centerpiece installations include the Caesar Rodney equestrian statue, the "12 Soldiers of the Revolution," the Prison Ship Martyrs memorial and the 23-foot Spirit of Liberty statue.

Rather than beginning with George Washington or Thomas Jefferson, however, Taylor chose to introduce visitors to Rodney.

The Delaware statesman, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, is remembered for his legendary overnight ride from Dover to Philadelphia in July 1776. Suffering from severe illness, Rodney rode roughly 80 miles through a storm to cast the vote that broke Delaware's deadlock in favor of independence.

"Of all the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Caesar Rodney is one of the most exciting," Taylor said. "When Delaware's delegation was deadlocked, he rode through the night to cast the vote that helped secure American independence."

THE REVOLUTIONARY LANDMARKS WHERE WASHINGTON, ADAMS AND JEFFERSON CHANGED AMERICA

For decades, the bronze statue stood in Wilmington's Rodney Square before being removed in 2020. It now occupies one of the most prominent locations in the nation's capital, just blocks from both the White House and the Capitol.

From Rodney's ride, Taylor naturally guides visitors into the next chapter of the American story.

Arranged around the plaza are bronze sculptures representing 12 Revolutionary War soldiers. Rather than depicting famous generals, the statues celebrate ordinary Americans whose individual stories reflect the sacrifices of the Revolutionary generation.

"These are ordinary citizens who did extraordinary things," Taylor said. "Every one of these statues tells the story of someone who answered the call during the Revolution."

Among them is Samuel Whittemore, who fought British troops at age 78. According to Taylor, Whittemore was bayoneted multiple times, shot in the head and left for dead before surviving and living into his 90s.

Another figure, Simon Knowles, enlisted at just 15 years old and served alongside George Washington throughout much of the Revolutionary War before returning home to live as a farmer.

Taylor said those stories represent the exhibition's central message.

"Unlike monuments to George Washington or Thomas Jefferson, these statues honor ordinary Americans who did extraordinary things," he said.

Nearby, another installation tells one of the Revolution's lesser-known tragedies.

Designed as visitors physically walk through its narrow bronze panels, the Prison Ship Martyrs memorial recreates the outline of a British prison ship. According to the National Park Service, nearly 12,000 Americans died aboard prison ships during the Revolutionary War; even more than were killed in combat during the conflict.

Taylor said the memorial is meant to immerse visitors in that experience.

"As you walk inside, you hear the water from the fountain," he explained during the tour. "It helps place you inside the story."

The fountain itself has also become part of the experience. Taylor noted it was recently restored to operation after years of sitting idle, providing the soundscape surrounding the memorial while complementing the plaza's redesign.

Towering above the entire exhibition stands the Spirit of Liberty, a new bronze figure inspired by iconic American monuments while looking toward the country's next 250 years.

Standing 23 feet tall, the statue holds an exact bronze replica of the Declaration of Independence in one hand while raising a sword skyward with the other. Around its base are reliefs depicting three defining moments of the Revolution: the signing of the Declaration of Independence, George Washington crossing the Delaware River and the British surrender at Yorktown.

"The Spirit of Liberty represents the sacrifices that gave birth to this nation," Taylor said.

During Fox News Digital's visit, visitors gathered around the plaza to photograph the statues against the Washington skyline. Low-angle views of the bronze figures framed them against bright summer skies, while Rodney's horse appeared frozen mid-stride as though continuing the historic ride that helped shape the nation's founding.

For Taylor, whose career has largely been spent both behind the camera and behind the scenes designing historical works, the exhibition is about more than commemorating famous names.

Instead, he hopes visitors leave thinking about people they had never encountered before arriving at Freedom Plaza.

If you watched the Super Bowl last year, you were probably a bit disappointed. I’m sure you weren’t if you were a Seahawks fan, and I know that I was happy about some of the outcomes, but the game itself was a bit boring. That was a lot different than the NFC Championship game, which was a fantastic back-and-forth battle between the Seahawks and the team we break down here, the Rams.

Last Year

As mentioned, the Los Angeles Rams made it to the NFC Championship before falling short against the Seahawks. It was a good run, but the Rams did look vulnerable in each of their playoff games. They started against the Panthers and seemed like they were going to lose until they had some Matthew Stafford heroics. Speaking of Stafford, he ended up with one of the best seasons of his career and the MVP award. In the Divisional Playoffs, he capitalized on a bad route or bad throw (depending on who you ask) from the Bears and stole a 20-17 overtime win. He was great against the Seahawks, but the Rams defense couldn’t get a stop.

Offseason additions and subtractions

That inability to get a stop may be part of the reason that Los Angeles went out and made a major splash this offseason. They traded for Myles Garrett, arguably the best defensive player on the planet at the moment. It was so big that even Aaron Donald is considering coming back to the team, and out of retirement. Stafford is coming back after contemplating retirement, so they shored up that concern. They added Trent McDuffie, one of the better cornerbacks in the league, and grabbed Jaylen Watson from free agency to address the other side of their secondary. Their defense should be even better.

Roster

If Donald comes out of retirement, he probably won’t be quite as elite as he was in the past, but I have to imagine he is still in shape and would be ready by the time the season starts. It doesn’t look like he is coming, though. Still, this defense, which was solid but not great last season, could be amazing this season. I don’t know that Stafford will lead the league in touchdowns and yards, but he still has Davante Adams and Puka Nacua. If his offensive line protects him and gives him time, he will carve up even the best defenses he faces.

Betting Outlook

I am all in on the Rams this year. I think they are the best team in the NFL and have very few exploitable weaknesses. They are in a tough division – the Seahawks will still be good, the 49ers are always a tough team – but I think 11.5 wins is an over for them. I have them at 13 wins for the year. I also like them to win the Super Bowl at +550. Maybe I’m overconfident in their defense with Garrett or a 38-year-old quarterback, but I think the Rams have all the pieces and will close the deal this season.

Witness recounts Fourth of July weekend Bigfoot sighting in Connecticut, says 'there were no boobs'

In the early morning hours of July 5, a man saw a Bigfoot shortly after leaving a cabin a friend of his had rented in Voluntown, Connecticut, presumably for the Fourth of July weekend. The man was making his way back home to Rhode Island at the time.

After leaving the cabin's long dirt driveway and crossing a bridge on the road, he wrote to The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization that he "witnessed something jump into the road from my right heading to the woods on my left."

He had to hit his brakes so that he wouldn’t hit the "bipedal, 8-8½ foot tall creature." The presumed Bigfoot didn’t stop and never looked at him as it crossed the road in front of him.

"It had coarse, matted, and greasy looking long brown hair covering every part of its body I could see," wrote the witness who went on camera with an investigator a few days after the sighting.

"Its legs were shorter than its torso and its arms literally hung down to right around knee height. Must have had an 8 - 9ft 'wing span' if it fully outstretched its arms."

He was a skeptic before the sighting, but is not a skeptic anymore. It took him "a minimum of 60-90 seconds to regain control of my faculties" and continue his drive home.

This wasn't a bear caught in his high beams, he insists. It was a cryptid that walked in front of his car. That he is certain of. He spoke to two BFRO investigators and went on camera from the spot where he claims to have seen the Bigfoot.

While recalling his sighting, he was asked if he thought the Bigfoot he saw was male or female. He responded, "I, you know, I don't know... I'll say this, if the females are that big, I don't want to see a male."

Someone off camera, we can assume from the response he gave, asked if the Bigfoot he saw had boobs. The witness replied, "No, there were no boobs."

Sometimes you have to ask the tough questions. Are we any closer to knowing the truth about Bigfoot based on this sighting?

I don't think we can answer that. Not at the moment anyway.

However, as long as we have people out there willing to investigate reports and ask the questions no one else is willing to, that includes whether the Bigfoot had boobs or not, we're headed in the right direction.

'Shark Week' host Forrest Galante explains why crushing beers in the ocean is a bad idea

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: "Shark Week."

That annual stretch when Americans collectively gather around their TV sets to learn everything there is to know about the ocean’s apex predators and to ask ourselves why we are dumb enough to swim in the ocean in the first place.

But lucky for those of us who don’t want to end up the subject of a future "Shark Week" documentary, wildlife biologist, conservationist and TV host Forrest Galante has some simple advice.

Galante recently joined OutKick Outdoors to talk about shark attacks, shark behavior and his upcoming Discovery special, "Alien Sharks: Untamed America." And while he stressed that the chances of having a negative shark encounter are already extremely slim, he said beachgoers can make those odds even better by using some common sense.

"You know, the best thing you can do is educate yourself," Galante said. "Think about where you're going. Learn what the species are."

If you are looking for some blanket rules before your next beach trip, Galante offered a few.

Do not swim during feeding time

"Don't go in the water at dawn or dusk," Galante said.

Sharks are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. That is when they are more likely to be feeding closer to shore, which is also exactly where people tend to be splashing around during summer vacation.

Stay away from river mouths

"Don't swim near river mouths," Galante said. "That's when sharks are feeding."

River mouths can attract baitfish and other food sources, which can also attract sharks. If there is a place where sharks are naturally more likely to congregate, that is probably not the spot to float around with a drink in your hand and your guard down.

Do not swim alone

"Don't go swimming by yourself," Galante said.

This is one of those tips that applies to pretty much every outdoor activity. Hiking alone, boating alone, swimming alone — all of it adds risk.

And Galante said there is another simple clue beachgoers should pay attention to.

"If you see no one on the beach, that's usually not a good place to go swimming," he said.

Do not swim where people are fishing

"On the flip side of that, don't go swimming where people are fishing and throwing bait in the water and things like that," Galante said.

This one should be obvious, but apparently we need to say it anyway. If people are actively tossing shark food into the water, you can probably bet sharks will be there, too.

Be careful with shiny jewelry

Sharks are not hunting humans, but they are curious predators. And sometimes, something as simple as a flash of light can get their attention.

"Wearing something highly shiny, like jewelry or sequins or anything with those little mirrors that put out light, can look like a school of bait fish," Galante said.

That matters because, according to Galante, shark attacks on humans are usually because the shark thinks you're something else.

"They say that something like 99% of shark bites are a case of mistaken identity," he said. "You see a flash from a sparkly bit of jewelry or something, and the shark goes, ‘Oh wow, is that food?’ Unfortunately, when a shark asks the question, ‘Is that food?’ they do so by taking an investigative bite."

And that is where things can go very wrong.

"They don't have hands," Galante said. "They can't feel it, so that investigative bite can be very, very damaging and, in some cases, fatal."

Leave your beverages on dry land

This is the one that might surprise people. According to Galante, even certain sounds can draw a shark's attention.

"The crackling of a water bottle, or even the crunching of a beer can, sounds a lot like the crunching of fish bones to a shark, and it can make them come and investigate," he said.

Relax... sharks still do not want to eat you

Galante made it clear that most sharks are not looking for humans as prey.

"Most of the time, we're not even on the menu," Galante said. "They're just trying to figure out if we are."

So no matter what horrors you see on your TV screen this week, there is no need to cancel your beach trip.

"Just taking a few very simple precautions can greatly reduce your already very slim chance of having a negative encounter," Galante said.

Galante’s Shark Week special, "Alien Sharks: Untamed America," premieres Wednesday on Discovery and Max. The special follows him across the United States in search of some of the strangest and least-known shark species living in American waters — including glow-in-the-dark swell sharks, seagrass-eating bonnethead sharks, massive basking sharks and sawfish that look like something out of Star Wars .

"We have some of the coolest, the largest, the smallest, the weirdest and the most bizarre and incredible sharks right here in the United States," Galante said.

Toronto police investigate gunfire, vandalism targeting Jewish-owned bakery chain

A Jewish-owned bakery chain in Toronto, Canada, was targeted in two separate incidents on Sunday morning, including one location that was struck by gunfire, authorities said.

No injuries were reported and investigators are working to determine whether the incidents are connected, Toronto Police said.

One store location was struck by gunfire, while a second store sustained damage to a window, police said.

The popular new adaptation of "Little House on the Prairie," which began streaming on Netflix earlier this month, has caused a resurgence of interest in the original 1974 television series starring Melissa Gilbert and Michael Landon.

But what happened to the original cast?

Melissa Gilbert

Melissa Gilbert is best known for her portrayal of Laura Ingalls in the original series, which she began in 1974 at just 9 years old.

The 62-year-old had already been on shows like "Gunsmoke" and "Emergency" when the show started.

Also serving as the narrator of the show, Gilbert stayed on "Little House on the Prairie" for all nine seasons, until 1983.

During her time on the show, she made several TV movies, including "The Miracle Worker," "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "Splendor in the Grass."

She also reprised her role in the TV movies "Little House Years," "Little House: Look Back to Yesterday," "Little House: The Final Farewell" and "Little House: Bless All the Dear Children."

Gilbert continued to act after the show ended on dozens of TV movies and she also voiced Barbara Gordon on "Batman: The Animated Series" from 1992 to 1994.

Gilbert also made TV appearances on shows like "Touched by an Angel," "Providence," "7th Heaven" and "Nip/Tuck." She had a recurring role on Hallmark’s "When Calls the Heart," but recently revealed in an Instagram post that she would not be returning to the show. She said she was told that was due to "budget issues."

The news came after her husband Timothy Busfield, who she married in 2013, was charged with two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of child abuse in January. He was indicted by a federal grand jury in February on four counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor.

Busfield has denied the charges and Gilbert has continued to support him, telling ABC in April that he is the "last person in the world who would hurt a child."

"I trust him with my children's lives, with my grandchildren's lives, my nieces and nephews," she added. "He is an honorable, caring, generous human being."

Gilbert also defended the new reboot after she said she’d seen fans debating on social media whether the new version or the original were historically accurate and faithful to the books.

"The short answer is no, neither are entirely accurate to the times nor the books," she wrote in a Substack essay.

After giving several examples of inaccuracies, she wrote: "My hope is that folks realize that these are all perfect examples of dramatic license. Even the real Laura took dramatic license in writing her books. For example, in the book, ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ all three Ingalls girls are older than they were in real life."

She added, "So rather than getting all twisted up in what’s real and what’s dramatized, maybe just sit back and go for the ride the creative minds behind these shows want to take you on. If you like it, stick with it. If you don’t, you don’t have to watch."

Michael Landon

Michael Landon, who played Laura’s father Charles Ingalls on the show, began acting in the 1950s, appearing on shows like "Cheyenne," "Suspicion" and "The Rifleman." He was also in the movie "I Was a Teenage Werewolf."

Landon directed many of the show’s episodes and wrote and produced the show.

Before "Little House," he starred as Little Joe Cartwright on the long-running series "Bonanza."

Landon continued to work on several TV movies after the show ended, and he starred as angel Jonathan Smith on the 1984 to 1989 series "Highway to Heaven."

He also reprised his role as Charles Ingalls in four TV movies.

Landon died at 54 years old in 1991, just months after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Gilbert called Landon a "mentor and father figure" in a Fox News Digital interview in 2024. She said she saw her TV dad a week before he died.

"There were always funny moments with Michael," she said. "Even as sick as he was, he still maintained his incredible sense of humor."

Gilbert frequently posts memories of him on her Instagram, writing earlier this month, "I’ve always felt like the luckiest girl in the world because he chose me to be his ‘Halfpint.’ Working with him was more than formative. I learned most of what I know about our industry from him."

Karen Grassle

Karen Grassle, who played Laura’s mother Caroline, was mainly a theater and Broadway actress before landing the role on "Little House."

After the show ended, the 84-year-old continued to act until 2021, starring in the movie "Not to Forget."

Grassle had a contentious relationship with Landon while on the show, which stemmed from a salary dispute in Season 2 and prompted her to leave a year before the show ended.

She formed a special bond with her onscreen children "so they felt comfortable doing scenes with me as their mother," but her relationship with Landon, whom she called an "amazing, multi-talented person," soured, according to People magazine.

"I felt insulted as his co-star on a hit series," Grassle told the New York Post about his refusal to grant her a raise, arguing she should be paid the same as her onscreen children. "I didn’t want to gouge anybody, but I expected a fair wage."

She said Landon also cut her onscreen time during the dispute and made sexist jokes on set.

The actress reconciled with Landon before his death, telling the Post: "I am very grateful that we mended our fences."

Grassle is also very proud of her time on "Little House," calling her character "an incredibly strong woman with a nature full of texture. Her spirit is one to live by."

Melissa Sue Anderson

Melissa Sue Anderson played Laura’s older sister Mary Ingalls on the show.

The 63-year-old was the only member of the cast to be nominated for an Emmy for an episode about her character going blind.

Two years older than Gilbert when she started on the pioneer show, Anderson had only done a little TV work — including as Bobby Brady’s first kiss — before "Little House."

Anderson made her film debut in the horror movie "Happy Birthday to Me" in 1981 and after the show ended, she made TV appearances on shows like "Hotel," "Murder She Wrote," "The Equalizer" and "The Love Boat."

She met her husband, Michael Sloan, while appearing in the 1980s reprisal of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." The couple welcomed two daughters and Sloan died in 2025.

Anderson and Gilbert famously didn’t get along.

"We were very, very different," Anderson told the Atlanta Constitution-Journal.

Anderson also published a memoir about her time on the show called "The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House."

Gilbert felt that Anderson acted like the boss on set.

"From the moment we walked onto that set, Melissa Sue Anderson was the boss of me," she said in an interview, according to Parade. "She took that absolutely seriously. She was two years older than me, which, you know, when you’re 9 and 11 is a big deal."

Gilbert added, "She was tough on me both off and on camera, but on camera especially."

Anderson explained that she was just very shy, telling Harry Brownstone on his podcast last year: "I wish I had been more outgoing so I could have enjoyed it more and been more easygoing about everything."

However, the pair reunited last year at Gilbert’s off-Broadway play "Pen Pals."

"Reconnection with a sister," Gilbert wrote. "Long, healing talks. Lots of reminiscing. Lots of catching up. Lots of laughter and a few tears."

Twins Rachel Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush were just 3 years old when they were cast as younger sister Carrie Ingalls.

Sharing the role for eight years, they chose to leave after the eighth season when they were 12 years old.

"Everybody separated, and I didn’t see anybody," Rachel Lindsay said at a 50th anniversary reunion, according to Entertainment Weekly. "And that was really hard for me personally because I didn’t realize how connected I had been to everybody until years later."

"You make these really deep, intense bonds working with each other every single day, and then when it’s over, you’re just supposed to be like, ‘Okay, that was nice. Bye,’" she told the outlet. "And it’s really hard that way."

Both sisters retired from acting in 1983 to focus on their education.

In 2014, she married Daniel Sanchez, whom she first met when he lived near the set and used to sneak on to hang out with the cast and crew, according to People magazine.

She also has a grown daughter from a previous relationship.

Sidney acted in "Hambone and Hillie" in 1983 and Rachel Lindsay was in an episode of "Matt Houston."

"They all did screen tests, and for the silliest of reasons, they chose another girl over her," she said. "Of course, we all know there can only be one choice in the end, but it's a lot of pressure for children. So I decided I was going to explore other things because sometimes you go to what they call 'cattle calls,' where there are so many people competing for the same role. The casting directors aren't always nice."

The two sisters were credited as "Lindsay Sidney Greenbush" on the show.

Nellie Oleson, the daughter of the mercantile store owners who bullied Laura, was played by Alison Arngrim.

"It's so completely bonkers," Arngrim said. "Here's Melissa Gilbert and I playing mortal enemies, beating each other senseless all week. And then on the weekends, we'd go to each other's house for a slumber party, and we were hanging out."

She is also the author of "Confessions of A Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated" and had a one-woman show called "Confessions of a Prairie Bitch."

In 2002, she was honored with the Young Artist Former Child Star Lifetime Achievement Award for her work on the show.

Aside from "Little House, Arngrim also made appearances on shows like "Fantasy Island," "The Love Boat," the TV movie "Life Interrupted" and she recently made a cameo on the "Little House" reboot.

Katherine MacGregor played nasty gossip Harriet Oleson on the show.

After she died at 93 years old in 2018, Gilbert called her "outspoken and hilariously funny" in an Instagram post.

"A truly gifted actress as she was able to play a despicable character but with so much heart. Her Harriet Oleson was the woman our fans loved to hate. A perfect antagonist," she added.

"The thing people outside of our prairie family didn't know, was how loving and nurturing she was with the younger cast."

Before "Little House," MacGregor acted on shows like "Mister Peepers," "Mannix," "Emergency!" "All in the Family" and "Ironside."

Bull began acting in the 1950s, landing parts on shows like "Perry Mason," "Highway Patrol," "The Virginian," "The Fugitive," "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour," "Gidget," "Gomer Pyle: USMC," "The Andy Griffith Show," "Bewitched," "Mission: Impossible" and "Bonanza" before the show’s run.

He also starred as the doctor on "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" from 1964 to 1968.

He continued to act until 2011 on shows like "Lou Grant," "Knots Landing," "Hillstreet Blues," "Designing Women" and "ER."

Bull died at 89 years old in 2014.

He also reunited with Landon on three episodes of "Highway to Heaven."

Dean Butler

Dean Butler played Laura’s eventual husband, Almanzo Wilder, who came onto the show in the sixth season.

From 1986 until 1988, he starred on "The New Gidget" as Jeff "Moondoggie" Griffin.

That is what makes a new invention from South Korea's KAIST and Stanford University worth watching.

Researchers have created self-dressing clothes with soft, air-powered robots built into the fabric. Once activated, the garment moves along the body and helps guide itself into place, even while the wearer moves. The technology remains an early research project, but it shows how future clothing could help older adults get dressed with less assistance and stay independent at home longer.

How self-dressing clothes could support independence

Getting dressed ranks among the basic activities that often determine whether someone can live independently. When mobility or dexterity declines, people may need a spouse, family member or professional caregiver to help with a deeply personal routine.

The researchers behind the project say dressing challenges can reduce autonomy and increase reliance on caregivers. They designed the system for people with limited mobility, including older adults and those recovering from injuries. Stanford researchers have also identified dressing assistance as an important use for future home robots. The university says assistive technology could help older adults remain in their homes as caregiving needs increase.

Why dressing can become physically difficult

Dressing requires more movement than many people realize. You need to reach behind your body, lift your arms and shift your weight while handling fabric. Arthritis may make gripping or pulling clothing painful. Meanwhile, shoulder problems can limit your reach. Recovery from hip or knee surgery can also make bending difficult.

Balance adds another concern. Pulling on pants often requires someone to stand briefly on one leg or bend toward the floor. For a person who already feels unsteady, that familiar routine can become stressful. Self-dressing clothes could eventually reduce some of that reaching and pulling. However, researchers still need clinical studies to learn how well the system works for people with real mobility limitations.

How KAIST and Stanford's robotic clothing works

The researchers call their system SWAG, which stands for Self-Wearing Adaptive Garment. Instead of placing a large robotic arm next to the person, the team built flexible robotic tubes into the clothing. Air pressure causes these soft structures to unfold and grow along the body.

The movement turns the garment inside out as it advances. That approach allows the clothing to follow the person's shape while reducing friction between the fabric and skin. Think of ivy growing around a wall or tree. The plant advances from its tip rather than dragging its entire length forward. The soft robot uses a similar motion, which helps it follow curves and move across different surfaces.

A rainy bike ride sparked the robotic clothing idea

The idea began when KAIST postdoctoral researcher Nam Gyun Kim was riding his bike when it began to rain. As he kept moving, he wondered how helpful it would be if a raincoat could put itself on.

That simple idea led to a much bigger thought. Instead of making your body do all the pulling, reaching and twisting, what if the clothing could move into place on its own? From there, Kim and the research team began developing garments that use soft robotics to help dress the person wearing them.

How fast self-dressing clothes can work

Kim says putting on a full suit takes about 10 seconds. The published paper provides additional timing from individual demonstrations. A jacket moved into place in about 13 seconds, while the pants demonstration took roughly 21 seconds. A sleeve prototype took about 14 seconds.

The researchers tested sleeves, jackets and pants. Their results showed that the garments could unfold along the body while keeping contact forces within the team's safety limits. The system also relies on its physical design instead of a complicated control program. That could eventually help simplify the hardware needed for dressing assistance.

Why soft robotic clothing could feel more natural

Many existing dressing robots use rigid mechanical arms. Those systems must handle loose fabric while carefully avoiding uncomfortable contact with the person. They may also require the person to hold a fixed pose while the robot completes the task. That setup could feel awkward inside a bedroom or bathroom.

The KAIST and Stanford design takes a different approach by placing the robotic mechanism inside the garment. The clothing becomes the helper. Because the system uses soft materials, it can bend around the body rather than approaching it with a hard mechanical structure. KAIST says this design reduces physical strain and supports safer contact.

Where self-dressing clothes could be used first

Older adults and people with disabilities represent a major potential use for the technology. KAIST also sees possibilities for rehabilitation patients who need temporary assistance after an injury or medical procedure. However, industrial workplaces may adopt the idea sooner.

Semiconductor employees frequently put on protective cleanroom clothing. Emergency workers may also need to suit up quickly while carrying other equipment. The researchers believe air-powered garments could help people put on protective clothing without relying heavily on their hands. The published study also discusses possible medical uses, such as helping healthcare workers apply protective coverings or compression bandages. Those applications remain potential future directions.

What self-dressing clothes still need to prove

The current system remains a research prototype connected to a pneumatic base station. Researchers have yet to announce a consumer price or release date. Several everyday questions remain unanswered. The garments would need to fit different body shapes and movement patterns. Designers would also need to address washing, storage and portable air power.

The research team says future versions may use adjustable sheaths or elastic materials to fit a wider range of bodies. The researchers also want to automate the garment-loading process and improve the controls.

Most importantly, the team says clinical trials involving people with mobility impairments will be essential. Those tests could show whether the clothing feels comfortable and works reliably outside the lab. Researchers also need to explore how the garment comes off. The current work concentrates mainly on dressing, while automated removal remains a future possibility.

What this means to you

You probably will not find robotic clothing hanging in a local store anytime soon. Yet this research gives us a useful preview of where assistive technology may be heading. For you or someone you care about, the biggest benefit could be control over a private daily routine. Clothing that handles part of the pulling and positioning could make mornings less tiring.

It could also delay the point when someone needs another person present simply to get dressed. That possibility still depends on testing, affordability and a design people feel comfortable wearing.

When speaking to Fox News Digital at Fanatics Fest, the 57-year-old businessman shared that to have a successful business, you have to build it around "something that you love."

"If you're starting something that you love, you have to want to do it for free. I always say to kids, you know, you got to get paid for what you'd do for free, you'd be able to sell whatever you would buy. So, any business is a great business. Emptying garbage is a great business if you really love it. If you're doing it just for money though, you'll be screwed. Even Kevin O'Leary, you think he does it for money? No, he just likes complicated structures that manage his downside. But at the end of the day, he likes the chess game."

The reality TV star began working at a young age, developing his entrepreneurial spirit before founding FUBU ("For Us, By Us") in 1992 along with three of his childhood friends.

Hikers face $25,000 fine after off-leash dog barked at grizzly bear on Banff National Park trail

Two hikers are facing charges after their off-leash dog repeatedly ran toward and barked at a grizzly bear during an encounter in Banff National Park.

The incident unfolded on the Taylor Lake trail, about nine miles south-east of Lake Louise, as Washington residents Brook and Kraig Koski backed away from Bear 142, a well-known female grizzly in the park.

According to reports, Kraig initially encountered the bear while jogging ahead of his wife on the trail. Brook recorded the roughly 90-second video as the bear slowly followed Kraig, who walked backward while facing it and carrying bear spray.

Meanwhile, their small dog, Lola, ran freely between the hikers and the grizzly, at times barking at the bear.

"Back off!" Kraig can be heard yelling.

"You’re too close!" Brook says from behind the camera.

The hikers also repeatedly call for Lola, but at no point in the video do they appear to leash the dog or simply pick her up — despite having ample opportunity to do so.

It’s one of the most frustrating videos you’ll ever watch.

Eventually, Bear 142 leaves the trail and disappears into the woods. The encounter fortunately ended without anyone being injured, but Parks Canada wardens were able to identify the hikers after the video was posted online and racked up millions of views.

The pair now face regulatory charges under the Canada National Parks Act for having an off-leash dog in a national park. Pets are required to be secured on a leash no longer than three meters, and the hikers could face fines of up to $25,000 if convicted.

"Failure to keep your pets leashed in the national parks poses risks to pets and wildlife," Parks Canada spokesperson James Eastham said in a statement. "Bears and other wildlife may react aggressively toward dogs they view as threats, resulting in their injury or death."

Nick de Ruyter, program director of WildSmart for the Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley, praised Parks Canada for filing charges because "there was so much time in the video to grab the dog and put it on a leash."

"The safety of them, their pets and other people is far more important than getting that video," he said.

Exactly.

As someone who hikes with my dog all the time, this is the kind of behavior that makes responsible dog owners want to pull their hair out.

Keeping a dog leashed in bear country is not an arbitrary rule designed to ruin anyone’s fun. It protects the dog, the wildlife and every other hiker who may encounter an already-agitated animal farther down the trail.

Instead, Lola was allowed to run around barking at a grizzly while her owners repeatedly yelled her name and continued filming.

This is how dogs get banned from trails. It's how responsible owners who follow the rules end up losing access.

"Off-leash dogs can also cause wildlife stress, leading to them avoiding important habitats and sources of food," Eastham said. "Always keep your pets on leash when visiting national parks."

ROBERT MAGINNIS: The Pentagon's plan to seize Iran's uranium isn't a raid. It's an invasion

The Pentagon has reportedly revived an extraordinary option for President Donald Trump: Send thousands of American troops deep into Iran to seize enriched uranium from damaged and buried nuclear facilities, according to a new report.

It is being described as a raid. It would be nothing of the sort.

This would be a temporary invasion of hostile territory, launched without real surprise, against an enemy that has spent months expecting us, at sites whose defenses and contents remain uncertain. American troops might seize the objective only to become trapped in a mission with no reliable timetable and no clean exit.

A modern Desert One

The historical parallel is Operation Eagle Claw, the failed 1980 attempt to rescue American hostages in Tehran. President Jimmy Carter had exhausted diplomacy and sanctions after a hostage crisis that had humiliated the United States for six months, as mounting political pressure pushed him toward a complex rescue operation.

It ended at Desert One, where mechanical failures and a collision between a helicopter and a transport aircraft killed eight American servicemen before the rescue force ever reached Tehran.

Today's military is far more capable, with mature special operations commands and decades of combat experience. But technology does not repeal geography, logistics or enemy action, and a president's need for a decisive result does not make a fragile plan sound.

Trump has shown the Carter analogy concerns him. When asked in June about a uranium-seizure mission, he said he considered it early and rejected it. "I didn't want to be Jimmy Carter," he said.

Harder than 1980

The reported mission would dwarf Eagle Claw in complexity. Carter's force knew roughly where the hostages were. In Iran today, we may not know precisely where the enriched uranium sits, whether it has been divided among sites, or whether Iran has already moved it. Some officials believe international inspectors have not verified its location in nearly nine months.

The Pentagon plan reportedly contemplates securing Iran's Fordow and Isfahan facilities, along with the deeply buried Pickaxe Mountain complex near Natanz, where Iran is believed to have moved centrifuges.

Thousands of troops could be required, including Army Rangers, special operations forces and combat engineers. One version reportedly calls for flying in excavation equipment and building a runway to fly out roughly 450 kilograms of highly enriched uranium, some enriched to 60 percent.

Pickaxe Mountain alone shows the scale of the problem. Analysts believe it sits more than 300 feet underground, deeper than the Fordow plant the U.S. struck last year. Open-source evidence does not place uranium there at all; the mountain may hold centrifuges instead, and American forces could fight their way inside only to discover the objective had already disappeared.

No element of surprise

Iran knows the likely targets and has spent months preparing entrances, roads and defenses. At Isfahan, tunnel entrances believed to hold much of Iran's enriched uranium reportedly remain backfilled with dirt, reinforced with mines and roadblocks to complicate any ground approach. As one former National Security Council official noted, the sites are fixed and both sides know which facilities American forces would likely approach.

American aircraft might suppress Iran's air defenses and deliver an assault force. That is only the first step. Troops would then have to control roads, tunnel portals and an airfield for heavy cargo aircraft, while engineers bring in heavy equipment and other troops secure a wide perimeter. Inside, they could confront collapsed concrete, mines, poor ventilation and armed defenders in confined passages. Every hour favors Iran.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps would likely respond on multiple fronts: striking American bases, disrupting shipping through Hormuz and activating proxies in Iraq, Syria and Yemen. Tehran would not need to defeat American forces outright, only deny them the objective by collapsing tunnels, contaminating the site or trapping personnel inside.

The longer our forces remain, the more dangerous the mission becomes. What began as a raid becomes a defended American lodgment hundreds of miles inside Iran. The moment American engineers begin building an airstrip on Iranian soil, the raid becomes an invasion.

Why not seal it instead?

That raises the question Washington should ask before sending a single soldier underground: Why not deny access to the facilities rather than occupy them?

If the uranium is trapped inside damaged tunnels, the wiser course may be to collapse every known entrance and access route, then maintain surveillance and strike any effort to reopen the site. Iran might carve a concealed entrance or move the material first — but seal, monitor and re-strike may be far more sustainable than sending thousands of Americans into an underground maze.

The goal should be making reopening slow, visible, costly and vulnerable to another strike, not pretending the mountain can never reopen.

Washington should keep demanding International Atomic Energy Agency access and verified accounting of the material as the price of any further relief, paired with sanctions, interdiction and verified international custody of the stockpile.

The Carter trap

Trump is not Carter, and this is not 1980. But both presidents confronted an adversary that refused to yield and mounting pressure to deliver one dramatic operation that could break the stalemate. I will not call Trump desperate; that claims knowledge of his state of mind outsiders lack. But the administration plainly faces pressure to convert tactical success into a visible strategic victory, and seizing Iran's uranium for display in American custody would offer precisely that image. Wars punish leaders who confuse a powerful image with a durable outcome.

Wars are not won by counting targets destroyed, but by producing a durable political outcome. American forces have punished Iran and badly damaged its military, but an open-ended ground commitment could still turn success into failure.

Before proceeding, the administration owes the country answers: Do we know where the uranium is? Can we reach it? How many troops are needed to hold the perimeter? What happens when Iran counterattacks? And before placing thousands of Americans on Iranian soil, has Washington secured the legal authority and public support for a ground war?

Most importantly, how do we get our troops home?

Desert One failed before the rescue force reached Tehran. A uranium-seizure mission could reach the mountain, breach the tunnels and still fail because getting in is not the same as getting out. The real test is not whether America can reach the objective. It is whether the objective justifies the cost when a less dangerous strategy may achieve the same strategic result.

Missing Grand Canyon hiker, 83, rescued after getting separated from companion

An 83-year-old hiker who vanished in a remote stretch of Grand Canyon National Park after separating from his companion was found alive after an intense all-night search across rugged burn-scarred terrain, officials said Thursday.

Gerald Guinn, an experienced outdoorsman from Kanab, Utah, was found around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday during a National Park Service helicopter search, about 2.5 miles from where he was last seen on the park's North Rim, according to the National Park Service and the Kane County Sheriff's Office.

Guinn disappeared Monday after he and his hiking companion intentionally split up while taking a short hike around 12:30 p.m. in search of a nearby historic object in a remote area near the park's northeastern boundary, the sheriff’s office said. While his hiking partner found the object, Guinn never showed up. After several hours of searching, the other hiker called for help.

Search crews from Grand Canyon National Park, Coconino County Search and Rescue , and Kane County Search and Rescue spent the night looking for Guinn. Teams searched on foot through burned forest, the sheriff’s office said, while drones, search dogs and helicopters helped cover the remote area.

On Tuesday, investigators were able to narrow the search after receiving a cellphone ping from Guinn's phone. When a National Park Service helicopter later spotted him, Guinn waved to the crew overhead, the sheriff's office said.

The helicopter couldn't land because of the steep, rugged terrain, so a Kane County Search and Rescue team hiked about 1.5 miles to reach him. Deputies said Guinn was in good spirits but was cold and unable to walk. Rescuers gave him water and warm clothing while deciding how to get him out safely.

With darkness setting in, a helicopter rescue was no longer an option. Instead, a paramedic was flown to the scene, and about 20 rescuers took turns carrying Guinn through the rough terrain in a rescue stretcher, clearing fallen trees and marking hazards along the way until they reached a nearby road around 1:30 a.m. — a day and a half after Guinn first set out on the hike.

Guinn was checked by emergency medical personnel and released, according to the sheriff's office.

The National Park Service thanked Coconino County Search and Rescue and Kane County Search and Rescue for helping bring the search to a successful end.

I don't want to alarm anyone and I certainly don't want to encourage any disrespecting of summer, because I'm all in on summer every year and I have been since I was a child. You don't give away a minute of it.

Having said that, we're only a few days away from August. With August comes football. The Hall of Fame Game is a couple of Thursdays away (Aug. 6) with the Arizona Cardinals taking on my Carolina Panthers. It's on after that.

We can have the best of everything for a few weeks. We can have summer and all that comes with it. We can have baseball as teams start eyeing the postseason. And we can have football before fall arrives.

I'm getting the ball rolling on the final Sunday Screencaps of July with a story about tan lines. It's the perfect tribute to summer if you ask me.

It's not just any story of tan lines, it's that of golf's newest star, Emily Tanner. She made the most of boyfriend Wyndham Clark's week off by doing a Q&A on Instagram where she was asked about her relationship with the golfer.

When asked how the two met, she replied, reports the NY Post, "Online/mutual friends[.] We met end of January and fell pretty fast. We’re super similar and get along so so well."

This love and golf story isn’t without some personal sacrifice on Tanner's part. She was asked about what the best thing about being Clark's girlfriend on tour is, and whether she's had "any pinch me moments."

She replied, "One thing I didn’t know is that I too would get sock tan lines."

She shared a picture of her feet showing the tan lines. She had no idea she would be heroically battling tan lines as the girlfriend of a golfer. It's an aspect of standing out in the sun for days on end that many overlook.

"Cyclospora skinny" or "diarrhea diet"

Evidently using the Cyclospora outbreak as weight loss isn’t a good idea. Don't take my word for it. I'm not a doctor.

But this guy is, and he's aware that there have been some suggestions on social media to get on the diarrhea diet.

"Getting any kind of illness to purposely cause something like that is just a bad idea," said Chandler physician and IntraCare President Dr. Andrew Carroll, reports FOX 10 Phoenix.

"With diarrhea, if you’re not able to control that part of it, you’re going to lose a lot of electrolytes, so you’re going to have problems with muscle cramps and headaches and all those sorts of things," Carroll said.

"But dehydration, and we’re really aware of dehydration in this state, you don’t want to get to the state where your heart just can’t pump enough blood because there is no water in there."

None of that sounds like any fun and it doesn't sound like people are lining up trying to get on the so-called "diarrhea diet." There are 41 states reporting more than 4,000 confirmed cases.

Viewers of Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" may be surprised by how many mythological creatures are packed into Homer's ancient epic.

Filled with A-list stars, the major box-office hit takes audiences from one mythical encounter to the next as Odysseus fights to make it home.

"The movie is visually stunning. It needs to be seen in the theater," said Joel P. Christensen, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the CUNY Graduate Center and a professor of classics.

EXPERTS STUNNED AFTER UNCOVERING HOMER'S 'ILIAD' ON EGYPTIAN MUMMY IN UNPRECEDENTED FIND

Christensen, a Homer scholar, told Fox News Digital that audiences don't need to read "The Odyssey" beforehand because Nolan provides enough context to follow the story.

Unlike many modern blockbusters with a single central villain, nearly every stop on this journey brings a new monster or supernatural threat.

As Christopher Nolan's adaptation introduces new audiences to the ancient epic, here's a look at the legendary creatures that define Odysseus' journey in the book, according to Encyclopedia Britannica.

Spoiler alert: Plot details from "The Odyssey" are noted below.

Polyphemus

The most famous of the Cyclops, Polyphemus traps Odysseus and his crew in his cave before devouring several of the men.

The name Polyphemus roughly translates to "rich in songs and legends" or "widely talked about," per Britannica.

In Greek mythology, sirens are half-bird and half-woman creatures who lured sailors to their deaths.

In Book 12 of "The Odyssey," the sorceress Circe warns Odysseus about the Sirens' irresistible song.

In the book, Scylla and Charybdis trap Odysseus in a narrow strait, with Scylla waiting on one side to snatch sailors from passing ships and Charybdis creating a massive whirlpool on the other.

A scholar's perspective

Like any adaptation of a sprawling ancient epic, Nolan's film condenses parts of Homer's story for the big screen, Christensen noted.

While visually stunning, the expert said the film's adaptation of some mythological figures falls short of Homer's original.

He pointed to changes in the portrayals of Polyphemus and Circe, arguing that the film makes the Cyclops "more of a monster than a man," while depriving Circe of agency.

Nolan "impl[ies] that she turns men into pigs because she has been sexually assaulted before," said Christensen.

"This is one of the film's weaknesses: Traditional gender roles become a shorthand for actual story."

"Nolan had to reduce some of the repetitions we see in the Homeric ‘Odyssey’ and had to limit the length of some scenes," he said. "He also made the choice to limit the depiction of the divine."

"For people who do know ‘The Odyssey,’ remember that film is a very different medium than epic poetry is: It is shorter and visual, so many changes are required to allow the story to work as a movie," he said.

Christian school chaplain wins settlement after firing over LGBTQ sermon

A school chaplain in the United Kingdom who was fired and blacklisted after preaching a sermon on LGBTQ issues has reached a confidential settlement with his former employer, ending a seven-year legal battle.

The Rev. Bernard Randall, an ordained Church of England minister, worked for five years as chaplain at Trent College, an independent school for K-12 students in Derbyshire, England. In 2018, Randall grew concerned when the school partnered with Educate and Celebrate, an outside group whose stated goal was to "smash heteronormativity" and embed queer theory in school culture. The group has since dissolved.

"I objected to [it] at the time it started, and tried to discuss it with the senior leadership, [but] they weren't interested," Randall told Fox News Digital.

The following year, a student asked Randall why pupils were required to accept LGBTQ ideology at a Christian school. Randall said that question, along with similar concerns raised by other students and staff, prompted him to deliver a sermon on freedom of belief and conscience.

In his chapel address, Randall told his young students they were entitled to hold traditional Christian beliefs on marriage and biological sex, while emphasizing that they must show respect to those with whom they disagree.

Days later, school administrators summoned Randall to a meeting, interrogated him, suspended him and launched an investigation. He was also reported to local law enforcement and Prevent, the U.K. government's counterterrorism program. Prevent ultimately determined he did not pose a terrorist threat.

In addition, the Diocese of Derby blacklisted Randall as a safeguarding risk to children.

Trent College eventually fired Randall for gross misconduct. He was reinstated on appeal, but under strict conditions that restricted his sermon topics and required prior administrative approval for chapel content. Furloughed during the pandemic, Randall was ultimately made redundant, or laid off, on Dec. 31, 2020.

CARRYING A BIBLE IN NORTHERN IRELAND HOSPITALS COULD BE A CRIME UNDER ABORTION BUFFER ZONE LAWS

Randall challenged his dismissal with the support of the Christian Legal Centre. Following an initial employment tribunal ruling against him, the Employment Appeal Tribunal set aside the judgment, ordered a full retrial and required Trent College to pay £20,000 in costs. Shortly thereafter, Randall and Trent College reached a confidential settlement.

After seven years being barred from ministry, an independent Church of England review conducted by the Diocese of London finally cleared Randall of all safeguarding allegations, ruling the concerns were "unsubstantiated" and finding no evidence of harm.

In a statement shared by his legal team, Randall said he was relieved by the ruling but said that nothing could replace the seven years he's lost from being shut out of ministry.

"I encouraged pupils to think, to debate, and to love their neighbors whatever they believed. No minister, teacher or chaplain should be punished for upholding Christian teaching in a Christian setting," Randall said.

Randall told Fox News Digital he was deeply troubled by the Church of England’s handling of his case, noting that officials spent years disciplining him for teaching orthodox church doctrine.

"The people who should support you most are the ones doing you harm," Randall said.

He added that standing up for freedom of speech and belief was worth the personal toll. "It's as Jesus said, what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul? And I sort of feel I'm in that position that it matters to stand up and be counted and tell the truth. And that was more important than just an easy, comfortable life."

Randall also voiced broader concerns about the future of free speech in the United Kingdom.

"Oh, I do worry," he told Fox News Digital. "There are groups that are fighting back, and we're not going to let them roll over us. But there are times when I wish we had the First Amendment."

"I think most people in Britain still value free speech," he added. "It used to be in this country, when somebody said something that we thought was a bit strange or odd, [we'd say], 'Oh well, it's a free country.' I don't hear people saying that anymore."

Vice President JD Vance criticized growing restrictions on speech in the U.K. while visiting Munich last year. The U.S. State Department has also raised concerns over the prosecution of peaceful religious expression under British buffer zone laws.

"I know that our American cousins and the people in the White House are looking at Britain and raising the question of free speech, and in Europe too as well," Randall continued. "That has to be a good thing because it doesn't hurt to have our friends from across the Atlantic offer a bit of advice about why it matters that free speech is so important and freedom of conscience, that these things really, really matter. So yes, I'm worried, but I'm not without hope."

While Randall has completed mandatory safeguarding training and is eligible to return to public ministry, he is waiting for the bishop of Derby, Libby Lane, to grant him permission to officiate, according to The Christian Legal Centre.

Clint Black says Billy Joel's 'Uncle Daddy' warning changed his life

When Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black welcomed their only child, Lily, in 2001, the country star made fatherhood his top priority to avoid becoming an "Uncle Daddy."

Black opens up about that decision in his new memoir, "Killin' Time," named after his triple-platinum 1989 debut album. The Grammy winner reflects on his upbringing, his meteoric rise to fame and a career that has included more than 20 million records sold.

The 64-year-old singer told Fox News Digital he came across an interview with Billy Joel, and the "Piano Man" singer's words stayed with him.

"I saw an interview with Billy Joel, and he was talking about being gone too much. He said he'd come home... and he called it being 'Uncle Daddy,'" said Black. "That was long before we knew we wanted a child, but I remember it sticking with me."

In "Killin' Time," Black recalled Joel saying life on the road often left him feeling more like an "Uncle Daddy" than a father. The comment stayed with Black for years and ultimately reshaped how he balanced his career and family.

"I didn't cut out activities completely when Lily was born," said Black.

"I did about 15 shows a year just to take care of the band and crew members.... I read a book or two, and I can't remember which one, but the author was talking about secure attachment for a child — who the child feels is their secure attachment, the person they look to in moments of fright. And if you want to be a secure attachment for your child, it's something you earn in the first three years of their life."

"So that was the number," he continued. "Three years of mostly being home, only going out and doing these small bits of work. I did some work at home, working on music... but I was around to be a dad. It wasn't great for my career, but I wouldn't change a thing. I wouldn't trade a better career for that attachment or the closeness I have with my daughter."

For Black, fatherhood came after years of heartbreak. In the book, he revealed that he and the former "Knots Landing" actress suffered four pregnancy losses before welcoming Lily.

"Trying to have a baby was not something that we had set out to do," he said. "And then, at one point, we realized we had better talk about this and find out where we both stood. And once we decided we wanted to have a child, we really, really wanted to have a child. So when we ran into problems with the miscarriages, it started to hurt. But we kept our hopes up."

"It was still scary getting through it," he admitted. "It wasn't smooth sailing, but it was sailing. We have a 25-year-old daughter now, and she is just a joy."

Black said that when Lily was born, he embraced fatherhood without hesitation.

"I think the biggest lesson I've learned from fatherhood is — I'm tempted to say patience — but I don't think that's it," he explained. "I think it's that I can do a lot more than I thought I could. I could have a career, travel, do all of that, come home, be active as a dad, go to basketball practice, volleyball games and school events."

"Taking her to bouncy playhouses, [watching] 'The Wiggles,' 'Bear in the Big Blue House' and 'Wicked,'" he said with a smile. "All the plays and all that stuff. I wouldn't have thought that I could do it all. But I have, and I've surpassed my own expectations. And that's through devoting myself to her, my wife and being present."

These days, Black is back on the road, and every so often, fans can catch Lily sharing the stage with him.

"I'm still doing 80 to 90 cities a year on tour, taking Lily and Lisa with me at times," he said. "They have toured with me. Those are the best tours."

"It's surprising," he reflected. "I went into fatherhood ready to do whatever it took. But the fear I had was, 'Is this going to be too much? I won't be able to do it all.' But I did."

Even today, Black said he's still in awe when he watches his daughter perform alongside him.

"Watching Lily perform right next to me on stage took me a while to adjust to," he admitted. "For a while, I was just the adoring father. I had to learn to be a guy in the band playing to an audience and enjoy what she’s doing and seeing her perform so well without having that be my focus on stage. I think it becomes distracting to the audience if they’re watching us, and they’re watching me with a shifted focus."

"But seeing her beside me, it's a gift," he added.

Ryan Fox details how he had to negotiate the Claret Jug onto his flight after Open Championship victory

Traveling with one of the most iconic trophies in all of sports isn't as easy as one might imagine. Ryan Fox, the Champion Golfer of the Year, quickly found that out while trying to board a commercial airplane with the Claret Jug after winning The Open at Royal Birkdale.

It goes without saying that the morning after becoming a major champion is a hectic one, and then having to deal with the unavoidable headaches at the airport only adds to the stress levels.

To set the scene on the Monday after Fox's stunning victory, the New Zealander jumped on a plane in Manchester bound for London before jetting back home from Heathrow Airport.

After making it through security with the Claret Jug in a protective case, he arrived at his departure gate and realized that he would have to do some finagling to get the hardware onto the plane as a carry-on as opposed to gate-checking it.

Handing over the oldest trophy in professional golf to a stranger and having them toss it underneath the plane isn't exactly an ideal situation, even for a very short flight from Manchester to the country's capital. During an appearance on 'The Smylie Show,' Fox detailed the conversation he had with the gate agent to 'sneak' the Claret Jug onto the plane as an additional carry-on.

"I meekly got up to the check-in agent with these two boxes and go, 'So, yeah, I've got some special cargo here, is there any chance I can just take these on the plane?'" Fox recalled telling the gate agent. "She goes, 'What's in it?' You know, I'm like, 'The Claret Jug, it's the oldest trophy in golf.' [She says] 'Did you win it?' I'm like, 'Uh, yeah. Can I just take it through?' She's like, 'Yep, no problem.'"

Fox also went on to explain that a number of different travelers recognizing him as he made his way through security likely helped his cause.

To make the already incredibly unique situation even more so, Fox made his way on the plane with the Claret Jug and just so happened to be seated directly behind Cameron Young, who finished runner-up at Birkdale after Fox made birdie on the 72nd hole.
