Doctors thought man had brain cancer — they found live tapeworms instead

Doctors thought a 60-year-old man had metastatic brain cancer after scans revealed multiple tumors – but further testing revealed a shocking diagnosis.

The Spanish man, who was not named, was found to have a parasitic tapeworm larvae lodged in his brain — a case of neurocysticercosis, a parasitic infection of the central nervous system caused by the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium).

The patient, a lifelong resident of Castellón, Spain, had not traveled to any regions where the disease is endemic, according to the case report published in the CDC journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

The man had initially come to the hospital after suffering two weeks of progressive headaches and mild behavioral changes.

CT scans showed multiple abnormal spots that looked like tumors that had spread from cancer elsewhere in the body, leading doctors to suspect advanced brain cancer.

However, whole-body scans, a colonoscopy and specialized imaging failed to identify cancer anywhere in the patient's body, the case report stated.

When doctors performed a more detailed MRI, they discovered several fluid-filled cysts in the brain, some of which contained the head of a tapeworm. A blood test confirmed the diagnosis of neurocysticercosis.

The man was treated with a combination of albendazole and praziquantel (two antiparasitic medications), as well as corticosteroids to reduce inflammation. He successfully recovered with no complications, according to the case report.

The authors suggested that the patient may have gotten the infection after accidentally ingesting microscopic tapeworm eggs years earlier.

The exposure may have occurred while working a construction job with migrant coworkers from regions where neurocysticercosis is endemic.

People can catch the pork tapeworm in two different ways. Eating undercooked infected pork usually leads to an intestinal tapeworm, but accidentally swallowing the parasite's eggs — typically through food or water contaminated with feces — can send the larvae into the bloodstream, where they may form cysts in the brain and other organs. This can cause the disease the patient in the case report acquired.

As this was just a single case, the source of transmission could not be proven, the researchers acknowledged, and the findings cannot be generalized to a wider population. The report shows that there is a possibility of local transmission in non-endemic settings, but cannot establish how often this occurs.

In the United States, less than 2% of neurocysticercosis cases are considered domestically acquired, according to the case report.

A prior systematic review identified only 18 confirmed locally acquired cases in Western Europe between 1990 and 2011.

In some cases, NCC can cause serious symptoms, including seizures, stroke, neurological deficits and cognitive decline.

"Our case emphasizes that the absence of travel history should not preclude NCC from the differential diagnosis of multiple ring-enhancing brain lesions, even in regions where metastatic cancer is statistically much more likely," the researchers concluded in the case study.

Detecting the worms earlier could have prevented "unnecessary invasive oncologic procedures and led to prompt, targeted antiparasitic therapy," they added.

NJ public school pulls yearbook after Hitler photo found among student baby pictures

A New Jersey middle school recalled its recently released yearbook when administrators learned that a photograph of Adolf Hitler had appeared in the publication’s baby pictures section.

"Earlier today, after students had already received their yearbooks, we learned that the baby pictures section of the yearbook contained an image that was later identified as an infant photograph of Adolf Hitler," East Brook Middle School Principal Ryan Aupperlee wrote in a June 25 letter to parents, according to a report by NorthJersey.com. "We immediately collected the yearbooks so the image would not remain in circulation."

East Brook Middle School serves students in Paramus, a Bergen County borough in northern New Jersey.

"I am aware of the unfortunate incident, involving the year book, at East Brook Middle School yesterday and have been in communication with both the Superintendent of Schools and Chief of Police," Paramus, New Jersey, Mayor Chris DiPiazza wrote Friday in a Facebook post. "Our borough’s strength has always been because we are a town welcoming to all faiths and home to numerous houses of worship. Any examples, like yesterday’s, does not reflect Paramus. God bless"

The incident prompted an investigation in Paramus. It was not immediately clear how the image was submitted, who was responsible for including it, or how it made it through the yearbook review process before the final copies were distributed.

The district is expected to determine next steps after reviewing how the photo appeared in the student publication. Law enforcement is investigating, too, according to the report.

"I want to be direct with you: the presence of this image is unacceptable," Aupperlee's said in his letter to parents. "Even if the image was not immediately recognizable to those paging through the book, its inclusion in an official school publication is a severe breach of our values. Adolf Hitler represents hatred, antisemitism, and the horrors of the Holocaust, including the murder of six million Jews. An image of him has no place in a yearbook created for our students. It does not reflect who we are or what East Brook stands for, and we condemn its inclusion without reservation."

The returned yearbooks had already been signed by students and school staff, so those recalls will require some consideration on how the personal messages are kept.

Conservatives revolt after Trump-appointed Barrett joins liberals in ‘shockingly wrong’ mail ballot ruling

Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett faced the wrath of conservatives on social media on Monday after she authored the majority opinion ruling in favor of a Mississippi law allowing mail-in ballots to be counted in elections even if they are received after Election Day.

The court was split 5-4 on the ruling with Barrett, appointed by President Donald Trump, writing the majority opinion joined by Chief Justice John Roberts, as well as justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Barrett's opinion held that Election Day, in the context of federal law, set a deadline for when voters must make a choice regarding their preferred candidate but said that relevant laws have no standard for when ballots must be received to be considered valid.

Barrett was quickly criticized by conservative commentators and politicians.

"A shockingly wrong opinion," Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt posted on X. "Barrett is the biggest conservative judicial disaster since Souter," conservative author Hans Mahncke posted on X. "The difference is that few conservatives expected much from Souter whereas Barrett was supposed to be the future of the Court. The worst part is that she’ll be there pushing leftist policies for another 40 years."

"Amy Coney Barrett continues to disappoint in far too many high-profile cases," political commentator Josh Hammer posted on X.

"Remember Election Day?" Republican Rep. Abe Hamadeh’s office posted on X. "This disastrous SCOTUS decision, authored by Justice Barrett, guarantees we’ll keep drifting away from it — as our sacred elections get bogged down by endless mail-in ballots and never-ending counts."

"Amy Coney Barrett is the worst choice ever among all GOP justices," retired U.S. Army captain Seth Keshel posted on X. "And that includes Roberts. What a disappointment she is."

"She quotes Alexander Hamilton in Federalist No. 59, speaks of the Framers' intent, and repeatedly invokes history as its guide," Constitutional attorney Krisanne Hall posted on X. "But when the historical evidence becomes inconvenient, Barrett quietly sets it aside. Barrett engages in judicial activism disguised as selective originalism."

Jason Snead, executive director of Honest Elections Project, said in a statement that the ruling is "deeply disappointing and misses the mark."

"Federal law is clear: all ballots must be received by Election Day to be counted," Snead wrote. "The Court missed a major opportunity to reinforce election integrity and instead sides with California-style chaos. As Justice Alito makes clear in his dissent, watching ballots trickle in after Election Day and flip races does nothing but damage public trust in our system of government."

Hans von Spakovsky, a former Federal Election Commissioner and Senior Legal Fellow in AAF’s Edwin Meese III Institute for the Rule of Law, said in a statement that the ruling is a "grave disappointment."

"As Justice Samuel Alito says in his dissent, joined by three other justices, not only is Justice Amy Comey Barrett’s opinion inconsistent with the plain text of those laws and historical practice and precedents, it ‘risks further undermining Americans’ confidence in election integrity,’" von Spakovsky wrote.

The ruling prompted many to reiterate the importance of the SAVE Act, Trump’s long-sought voter ID and citizenship verification legislation, including Republican Rep. Greg Steube who posted on X, "The Senate filibuster is the only thing standing in the way. Nuke it!"

Trump reacted to the ruling on Truth Social, calling it a "tremendous loss" and stressing the importance that all voters must show a photo ID and proof of citizenship and that there should be "no mail-in" ballots except for specific exceptions.

"There is no excuse for a politician, or otherwise, to be against the above three requirements," Trump wrote. "There is only one reason to oppose — CHEATING!"

Trump added, "The House of Representatives has approved this vital Act, THREE TIMES. The United States Senate seems unable to do so. In a time when there is a powerful Communist Movement taking place in our Country, one more dangerous than World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor, or September 11th, all Dumocrats, and our five Republican Senate Hold Outs, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, Thom Tillis, Bill Cassidy, and Mitch McConnell must vote to SAVE OUR COUNTRY. There can be no more excuses!"

Argentine YouTubers arrested after allegedly bypassing security at World Cup game: cops

Two YouTubers from Argentina are facing felony charges after they were arrested at a World Cup match as authorities say they allegedly tried to bypass security using bogus credentials.

Pato Perrotta, 26, and Beni Marmol, 20, were arrested on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium after they allegedly bypassed three layers of security for the Colombia-Portugal match with credentials that weren't valid.

In an arrest affidavit obtained by Fox News Digital, a Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office deputy wrote that Perrotta said he was "hired by a media company to review the event and has credentials."

However, the deputy wrote that the credentials were from a previous event and weren't supposed to be used for Saturday's match.

Marmol allegedly "stated that he was a media influencers (sic) trying to get in to stream the game."

Both men were arrested on charges of felony interference with a sports/entertainment event, which has a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Perrotta and Marmol were held at a local jail on a $2,500 bond.

During a live video, streamer Momo Benavides said he heard from Walter Costabel, who is the YouTuber's manager, Todo Noticias reported.

"I have been with Mármol y Pato since yesterday. We already paid bail, they will be released in a few hours. The cause is still not entirely clear. The judge just set bail and nothing more. All that is said are rumors about it," Momo said.

Momo said the YouTubers will remain in the U.S. until the matter is resolved.

"I imagine that, obviously, the fact that they have paid bail is not going to allow them to return. They are going to have to stay there until it is resolved," he said. "In any case, they are not deported, they just do not have to be near the stadiums where the World Cup matches are played. The crime charged is interference in sporting events."

The duo's videos span lavish shopping sprees and 24-hour challenges. Perrotta boasts more than 500,000 YouTube subscribers, with Marmol close behind at more than 270,000.

ICE arrests 15 illegal immigrants with convictions including homicide, rape and child sex crimes over weekend

EXCLUSIVE: Federal immigration authorities arrested more than a dozen illegal immigrants with criminal histories over the weekend, many of whom had convictions for charges including homicide rape, child sex crimes, and drug trafficking.

The 15 arrests came as the Trump administration continues to ramp up its deportation agenda through sweeping interior enforcement, while simultaneously removing protections for hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants and drastically expanding detention capacity.

"Over the weekend, while Americans attended the Great American State Fair and enjoyed their summer weekends, the men and women of ICE were hard at work arresting criminal illegal aliens convicted of homicide, child sexual abuse, assault, rape, and drug trafficking," said Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis. "Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, ICE will continue to protect Americans by arresting and removing criminal illegal aliens from our country."

Carl Winston Ellis, a Jamaican national with convictions in Las Vegas for possession with intent to distribute and illegal re-entry into the United States.
Jose Daniel Lara-Zavala, a Mexican citizen previously convicted of driving under the influence and homicide (willful killing with a gun) in Wilson, North Carolina.
Odelio Lopez-Lopez, a Mexican national convicted in California of burglary, possession of burglary tools, cruelty toward a child, cruelty toward a wife, and aggravated domestic assault.
Natanio Jimenez-Garcia, an illegal immigrant from Mexico with convictions for aggravated rape and fraud in Louisiana.

Nine others arrested had criminal convictions for a range of offenses, including child sex crimes, assault with a deadly weapon and witness tampering.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin recently stated that the agency is on track to surpass deportation figures from 2025, a year that saw 442,000 formal deportations and removals, with DHS reporting over 605,000 total removals overall.

Three people were killed and a dozen more hurt following numerous shootings throughout Chicago over the weekend.

Fox News Digital compiled data from the Chicago Police Department beginning at 5 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

In total, 15 people were shot within the three-day period. The shooting victims range from 17 to 57 years old.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order creating the "Office of Gun Violence Reduction" on Thursday.

He said, "From day one in office, my number one priority has been driving down violence and breaking the cycles of trauma and despair which have disrupted the lives of countless Chicagoans—with this executive order we are bringing together every tool at our disposal to save lives and build safer communities."

Less than two hours after Johnson's executive order was signed last week, Chicago police said two people were killed after an unknown suspect opened fire; the shooting is still under investigation.

Supporters attending President Donald Trump's rally on the National Mall acknowledged feeling the pinch from higher gas prices, but they largely declined to blame Trump — instead pointing to the Iran conflict and lingering frustration with inflation under former President Joe Biden.

"My least favorite president ran gas up to about $5 a gallon for no reason, and that was Mr. Biden," said Billy of North Carolina.

Fox News Digital spoke with Americans who gathered on the National Mall Wednesday evening for President Donald Trump's rally kicking off the "Great American State Fair" celebrating the nation's 250th anniversary, where attendees weighed in on whether they are feeling pain in their pockets as affordability concerns loom over the war with Iran and midterm elections in November.

"Affordability has a lot to do with just interest rates that went up the highest in 48 years under President Biden, so it's going to take some time to get those prices back down to where we were before that," said James McNair of Maryland.

Lisa and her husband, Matt, both served in the Army and expressed diverging opinions on affordability and Trump’s handling of Iran.

Ospreay vowed to live up to his dream of competing at Wembley Stadium in London. Strickland was hoping to play the spoiler in order to get the AEW world title back around his waist. The match would be a bloody affair between two of the top stars in the company.

Strickland knew what the gameplan was. He needed to slow Ospreay’s attack down to a snail’s pace and bring the match to him rather than trying to match the agility of his opponent. Both men gave it their all. With blood dripping down their faces, Osprey and Strickland stared each other down in the ring. Ospreay had The Death Riders cheering him on at ringside while Strickland had Prince Nana in his corner. It was coming down to the end.

Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio defended a socialist "insurgency" inside the Democratic Party on Monday, insisting the change ushered in by figures like Mayor Zohran Mamdani is "bluntly needed" and evidence of disillusionment with the status quo.

"We needed a change because [of] what happened in 2024," de Blasio told "America's Newsroom."

"People saw the Democratic Party [as] part of the status quo that they did not like. Ironically, Trump seemed like the guy who was ready to break the status quo. Now the tables have turned. Trump is the status quo guy."

"He's [Trump is] constantly talking about how great things are when people don't feel great... [he] seems out of touch with the day-to-day kitchen table reality of Americans, and he's doing things that, obviously, people are not into, like the war in Iran," de Blasio said.

In New York alone, a trio of Mamdani-backed candidates notched key victories, further signaling the leftward shift.

In Washington, D.C., Democratic socialist Janeese Lewis George defeated a more moderate opponent to claim the Democratic nomination in the race to succeed Mayor Muriel Bowser.

Black vultures are increasingly invading neighborhoods across the United States, bringing foul-smelling droppings, property damage and outrage among residents, according to a new report.

Hillsborough, North Carolina has been ground zero, with countless complaints about the droppings, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The problem is more widespread, however. Black vultures have pushed farther north in recent years, with growing numbers fueling complaints over property damage, livestock attacks and other conflicts, according to the University of Georgia’s Kohl Wildlife Lab.

Experts say warmer winters, easy food sources, and the birds’ ability to thrive around people have all likely contributed to the expansion.

Bryan Watts, director of the Center for Conservation Biology at William & Mary, told Fox News Digital that feeding vultures can attract unexpectedly large numbers of birds.

"Feeding vultures can attract a following of hundreds — and more importantly, can create a bond to the site that is very hard to break," Watts said.

The phenomenon is not limited to residential neighborhoods, he noted. Vultures are often around landfills, community dumpsters and boat ramps where food is readily available.

"Once the birds are fixed to the site, they will often spend large amounts of time loafing," Watts said.

While vultures provide an important environmental service by consuming animal carcasses and other decaying material, their presence can create challenges when large groups gather in one place.

Black vultures have been known to damage property, according to Watts.

"They are attracted to other materials like windshield wipers and car trim, parts of house roofs ... and they will damage those," he warned.

The birds can also behave aggressively toward pets and livestock.

Complaints from residents have included reports of droppings accumulating on homes, vehicles, sidewalks and driveways. Some have described the vultures' waste as foul-smelling and capable of damaging surfaces over time, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The issue has sparked debate online, as many commenters have defended the birds despite the complaints.

"Vultures are incredibly important," one Reddit user wrote. "They are nature’s cleanup crew, and they help keep the world from becoming a much nastier place."

Others argue that vultures often gather in residential areas even when nobody is feeding them.

"We have a ton of vultures living in the pine trees behind our house in South Carolina," another commenter wrote. "None of us feed them."

Some commenters took a middle-ground position, saying vultures play an important role in the ecosystem but that intentionally feeding wildlife can create problems.

Texas data breach hits 3M license customers

Buying a hunting or fishing license should feel like one of the safest things you do online. You pick the license, pay for it and get ready for your next trip outdoors. But now, a cyberattack tied to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has put personal information for more than three million license customers at risk.

The agency says the attack hit a vendor that handles the sale of hunting and fishing licenses. Texas Cyber Command detected the incident, and the state says an unauthorized actor may have obtained personal data from customer profiles. That is the part that should get your attention. Even when credit card numbers and Social Security numbers are spared, your license details, phone number and home address can still give scammers a lot to work with.

What happened in the Texas Parks and Wildlife data breach

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says its license system vendor was hit by a cybersecurity incident.

The agency says the investigation found that an unauthorized actor may have obtained data tied to 3,087,721 Texas hunting and fishing license customers.

TPWD did not identify the vendor in its public notice. However, it says it has strengthened access controls for customer profile data and plans to add more security features.

In other words, this involved a state license system connected to millions of people.

What information may have been exposed

TPWD says the exposed information may include:

Driver license information
Passport numbers, if provided
Email addresses
Phone numbers
Residential addresses

That mix of data can help criminals sound convincing. A scammer who knows your name, phone number, home address and license-related details can make a fake call or email feel very personal.

The agency says Social Security numbers, dates of birth and financial information, including credit card details, were not obtained. TPWD also says there is no evidence that customers under 18 were involved or that any specific group was targeted.

Still, this breach should not be brushed off. Driver license information and passport numbers can create serious problems if they fall into the wrong hands.

Why this breach can still put you at risk

You might hear that hackers did not get credit card numbers and breathe a sigh of relief. I get that. But scammers do not always need your full financial file to cause trouble. Personal details can help them impersonate a state agency, a license vendor or even a bank. One message may claim there is a problem with your license account. Another may ask you to "verify" your identity. A fake link can also look official enough to trick someone who is moving fast.

That is where this kind of breach gets dangerous. The more a scammer knows about you, the easier it becomes to lower your guard. A fake message that includes accurate personal details can feel legitimate, especially if it shows up right after a public breach.

What Texas Parks and Wildlife says it has done

TPWD says immediate steps were taken to strengthen access controls for customer profile data. The agency also says it is working with the license system vendor to add more safeguards and enhanced monitoring.

In a statement to CyberGuy, TPWD said, "We recognize the seriousness of this issue and have identified and implemented additional security options to better protect customer information. Many of our staff are hunters and anglers and were affected by this incident. We are committed to working with the license system vendor to implement increased safeguards."

TPWD also said license sales will continue on schedule for August and the next license year, adding that it believes "current and future customer data are not at risk."

That means customers should be able to buy hunting and fishing licenses as planned while the state works through the fallout from the breach.

Who should take action now

If you bought a Texas hunting or fishing license, use this breach as a reason to check your accounts and tighten your identity protections.

Affected customers can confirm eligibility for one year of free credit monitoring by calling the dedicated response line at 844-959-7123.

The enrollment deadline is Sept. 14, 2026. The call center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CT.

Do not wait for a suspicious charge or strange letter to show up. Breach cleanup works best when you act before someone tries to use your information.

3) Add a fraud alert

A fraud alert tells lenders to take extra steps before opening new credit in your name. You can place a free one-year fraud alert by contacting one of the major credit bureaus. That bureau should notify the other two. This is a good option if you want extra protection but are not ready to freeze your credit.

4) Report identity theft if something looks wrong

If you see signs that someone used your information, report it right away. That could include new accounts you did not open, strange letters about benefits, unfamiliar bills or credit checks you do not recognize. The FTC's IdentityTheft.gov can help you create a recovery plan based on what happened.

5) Remove your personal information from people-search sites

Your name, address and phone number may already appear on data broker sites. A breach can make that exposure feel even more personal. 6) Watch for driver's license misuse

Because driver's license information may have been exposed, pay close attention to anything tied to your ID. Do not use a phone number or link from a surprise message.

7) Be careful with passport-related scams

If you provided a passport number, be extra cautious with calls or emails that claim there is a problem with your passport or travel documents. Do not give out personal information to someone who contacts you first. Go directly to the official agency website or call a verified number instead.

8) Watch for fake TPWD messages

Scammers may use this breach as bait. Be careful with any email, text or call that claims to come from Texas Parks and Wildlife, a license vendor or a credit monitoring service. Do not click links from surprise messages. Go directly to the official website or call the dedicated response line instead.

9) Use strong antivirus software

Scammers may use this breach to send fake emails, texts or links that look official. Strong antivirus software can help block malicious links, detect phishing attempts and warn you before you download something dangerous. Even though TPWD says financial information was not obtained, you should still review your bank and credit card statements. Look for small test charges, unfamiliar subscriptions or anything that seems off. Report suspicious activity right away.

12) Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication

This breach does not appear to involve passwords, but scammers may use exposed personal details to target your other accounts. Use a password manager to create strong, unique passwords. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) for important accounts, especially email, banking and shopping accounts.

Malik Beasley indicted on federal charges for allegedly fixing his own NBA performances for bettors

Former NBA guard Malik Beasley has been indicted on federal charges stemming from an alleged sports betting scheme. Prosecutors say he intentionally altered his performance in games to benefit bettors.

A federal grand jury in the Eastern District of New York returned the indictment on June 24, charging Beasley, former NBA player Ed Davis, current player agent Paolo Zamorano and three other men with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, sports bribery, honest services wire fraud conspiracy and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

According to the indictment, Beasley and the others allegedly participated in a scheme between December 2023 and April 2024 that involved using inside information about Beasley's intended performances to place profitable wagers. Beasley played for the Milwaukee Bucks at the time.

"Bribery and insider betting schemes like this one involving former NBA players and a current NBA player agent who exploited inside NBA information for profit erode the integrity of American sports and victimize the sports-watching public," U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. said.

PISTONS' MALIK BEASLEY FACES FEDERAL PROBE OVER GAMBLING ALLEGATIONS: REPORT

The indictment details several Bucks games that prosecutors say were manipulated.

Ahead of a Jan. 26, 2024, game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, prosecutors allege Beasley told Davis he planned to underperform in rebounds. Co-conspirators then allegedly placed thousands of dollars in wagers on Beasley's "under rebounds" prop bet. Beasley finished with 3 rebounds, one fewer than the betting line.

The indictment also references games against the Charlotte Hornets on Feb. 27 and the Los Angeles Clippers on March 10. Prosecutors allege Beasley provided inside information about his intended performance in points and rebounds before those games as well.

Court documents state that four of the defendants were arrested Monday morning and will be arraigned in Brooklyn at a later date. Beasley and Zamorano were not in custody as of Monday.

According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Beasley's attorney, Steve Haney, said the government is coordinating a voluntary surrender this week.

Beasley, 29, last played in the NBA during the 2024-25 season with the Detroit Pistons, averaging 16.3 points per game. He has not appeared in the league since his name surfaced in gambling investigations last year.

Bill Maher, a comedian known for his political commentary, said Democrats are "well on their way" to blowing the November midterms after voting for three "outright really crazy" socialists in New York's primary elections rather than their more establishment Democrat counterparts.

Three socialists, Darializa Avila Chevalier, New York State Assembywoman Claire Valdez and former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander all won Democratic primaries in New York City congressional districts last Tuesday.

BILL MAHER CALLS MAMDANI-BACKED SOCIALIST ‘PATIENT ZERO’ OF THE ‘WOKE MIND VIRUS’

In the wake of the socialist sweep, Maher was asked Sunday during an event in Washington, D.C. about comments he made claiming the 2026 midterms are the Democratic Party's to lose.

"I did say that, it was about two months ago, and you see how quickly the news changes in just two months, because that was before the Supreme Court made a ruling on voting rights," said Maher, referencing the April Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais, which said congressional districts in that state had been illegally racially gerrymandered.

Maher, who has recently become a voice for moderate Democrats, made the comments just before accepting the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Maher hosts "Real Time with Bill Maher" on HBO and is a late night comedian icon.

"So, that has changed just in the last two months and then the Democrats just elected three very far-left democratic socialists in New York who are crazy — like outright really crazy — so like, how are they gonna blow it? I don't know but they seem to be well on their way."

Maher's comments echoed those of a growing list of Democrats who are concerned about a far-left socialist takeover of the party.

Avila Chevalier, in particular, is a rabid anti-borders activist, and has argued for completely abolishing police and prisons. She also made a series of anti-American posts on a since-deleted X account.

She trashed the United States on multiple occasions — one time calling her home country "a f---ing disgrace."

"I forgot to get napkins so I just wiped my hand on the American flag behind me," she said in yet another deleted post.

Avila Chevalier has called for the abolition of prisons and police and mocked black and Arab men for "fetishizing ugly colonizer women," referring to white women.

Valdez's socialist bona fides, on the other hand, include outwardly calling for the abolishment of ICE, which she described as a "fascist agency" and accused them of "terrorizing" the community and "kidnapping" people.

Lander, meanwhile, left the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in 2023 over their response to the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas terrorist attack that killed 1,200 Israeli concertgoers.

Still, he has also called for the abolition of ICE, the defunding of the NYPD and has spewed anti-white rhetoric, even intimating that he could be a white supremacist simply because of his skin color.

Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville said Avila Chevalier shouldn't be able to serve in Congress under the Democratic Party name.

"I don't think that the congressional Democrats should seat her as a member of the Democratic Party. She actually describes herself as a democratic socialist," he said in an interview with Fox News’ Kayleigh McEnany on "Saturday in America."

"I don't have anything in common with someone that says that they're against interracial dating or doesn't want to have any incarceration for convicted felons."

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., has also spoken out about the socialist takeover in his own party.

Baseball is one of those sports where anything can happen. Any given day a bad team can beat a powerhouse. I always advocate for bettors to be extremely cautious when playing big favorites. Just because a Cy Young winner is on the mound doesn't mean we should be betting on them automatically. Obviously, it gives you a better chance to win, but it guarantees nothing. I do think we have a great opportunity with one on the mound today as the Miami Marlins play the Colorado Rockies.

The Marlins have been doing a solid job this season of making it all work out. Despite being in a top market for desirability, the team tends to avoid paying players. They are constantly retooling and don't really want to invest in players. That doesn't mean they have no talent on the roster. Actually, it is quite the opposite. They have a lot of good young talent, and when it clicks, they can make deep runs into the postseason. Overall, they are 44-40 for the season, but they need to learn how to win on the road at 16-23 for the year.

It will be interesting to see if the team keeps their players at the deadline, seeing as how they are above .500. Sandy Alcantara takes the hill tonight, and he will be dangled in trade talks regardless of how well the Marlins are doing. They don't want to pay him, and he is going to look for a good contract. He is 8-4 for the season with a 4.01 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Those aren't his Cy Young numbers, but they are decent enough. He has also shown flashes of his dominant form. He has thrown five straight quality starts for the Marlins, and his first start of this season was a seven-inning, one unearned run on four hits performance against the Rockies.

The Rockies are in the midst of yet another losing season. There are very few franchises in worse spots than the Rockies and the Los Angeles Angels. They are almost 20 games under .500 at 33-51, but they are surprisingly good at home this year. They are 18-22 for the year in Colorado. I'm interested to see how they act at the trade deadline because there aren't a ton of guys you'd want to go after, and a lot tend to be viewed as having inflated numbers from playing at Coors Field. Their pitching remains a problem and the team has an ERA of 5.47.

Tonight, the team turns to Sean Sullivan, who is 0-2 with an 8.25 ERA in three starts. His first one wasn't terrible as he went three innings against the Athletics and allowed just two hits. He then allowed eight runs to the Chicago Cubs in four innings of work. His third start was against the Boston Red Sox, and this was the first start of his career in Colorado. He went five innings, allowed three earned runs on five hits and five walks. It probably should've been a worse start for him.

The total is one I have mixed feelings about. The 11.5 is a reasonable number, but I think it could be a sweat either way. Sullivan is going to give up some runs, but you just don't know if it will be three or if it will be ten. I think Alcantara will allow just a few runs.

I think the best play is to grab the Marlins on the moneyline. Looking at the team, they are in solid form at the moment, having won four of the past five. I would advise not playing it if it gets much higher than the -140 I've taken it at. We aren't getting the best number anymore, so just be cautious. I also like Alcantara at 5+ strikeouts at -116.

Mark Briscoe and his five team members were hoping to beat AEW world champion MJF and the five members that had been forced to support him in a steel cage match. If Briscoe’s team won, Briscoe would receive an AEW World Championship match against MJF.

AEW debuted a circular cage to keep all 12 men housed in. The unique setup brought its own type of dangerous fun for each of the competitors. Thumbtacks were introduced into the mix, Kyle O’Reilly used a Nintendo Entertainment System as a weapon, Kevin Knight was shocked at the top of the cage and fell through a few tables and even Lio Rush made an appearance.

It all came down to whether Team Briscoe would be able to conquer the Don Callis Family and MJF. Andrade El Idolo, who was supposed to back MJF, had his own chance to put Briscoe away. Luigi Mangione's federal trial pushed to next year in assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO

NEW YORK — Luigi Mangione's federal murder trial in the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been moved back to make room for his state-level trial on related charges — a delay that had been expected.

The 28-year-old Mangione returned to court Monday for a hearing on jury selection — days after reports that a potential plea deal had fallen apart.

The former Ivy Leaguer is also facing a separate state-level murder case in the December 2024 shooting of Thompson, 50.

Since April, Justice Department prosecutors and Mangione's defense team have been working on the jury questionnaire for his federal trial. Judge Margaret Garnett said Monday that there was no way to conduct jury selection in September as scheduled with his state trial expected to be underway at the same time.

The state trial is expected to begin on Sept. 8.

The federal trial was tentatively scheduled to begin in October and widely expected to be delayed due to the conflict in timing. Jury selection in the federal case has been pushed back to Jan. 5, 2027, with opening statements expected on Jan. 25.

Aside from the scheduling issue, the sides both agreed with the court's proposed jury questionnaire.

The proposal has not been made public and is not expected to be unveiled until after jury selection is complete to ensure fairness.

Garnett also set an Oct. 23 deadline for prosecutors to disclose their expert witness list and agreed to have to extra alternate jurors seated in the high-profile case. The federal trial is expected to run two to three weeks, she said.

Mangione entered in a brown jail jumpsuit around 11:50 a.m., escorted into the courtroom by U.S. Marshals. His hands were behind him, uncuffed. They brought him through the door on the right side of the courtroom, opposite the defense table, so he had to walk in front of prosecutors before joining his lawyers. Judge Garnet kicked off the hearing around noon.

The sides had argued about specific questions in prior court filings over the past few months. Prosecutors filed a letter with the court in May listing their objections to some of the defense's proposed questions, calling some overly intrusive or duplicative.

Some things the defense is looking to learn about prospective jurors include their living situations, including whether they own or rent a home, their employment status, and if they have worked toward a goal as a part of a group, whether they have children and background information on their children, and details about their faith.

The defense also seeks to ask jurors about their background in the context of jails, firearms and law enforcement, the type of television shows they watch, and any prejudices with the criminal justice system. The defense wants to know if a juror regularly stays at the Hilton on 6th Avenue, the scene of the crime — and whether the potential juror works for or holds stock in UnitedHealthcare.

Last week, reports citing anonymous sources claimed that Mangione's attorneys and federal prosecutors were having discussions about a plea deal but were unable to come to an agreement.

In a statement to Fox, Mangione lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo called information attributed to anonymous sources, "a troubling, deliberate pattern by prosecutors and law enforcement to prejudice Luigi." A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York declined to comment on the reported plea negotiations.

Separately, Mangione's lawyers floated and then withdrew a potential psychiatric defense in the state case.

They sent a one-sentence letter to the court, telling Judge Gregory Carro that they were withdrawing a notice made public just a day earlier that signaled plans to pursue an extreme emotional disturbance defense in his state case.

The move would have required Mangione to concede that he shot Thompson, a father of two, at his state trial. If he were later convicted under New York's extreme emotional disturbance law, the murder charge would be reduced to manslaughter, and the potential sentence would be reduced from 25 years to life in prison to five to 25 years.

With his federal trial not scheduled to begin until early next year, it's unclear how such a defense in the state case would have impacted that one. The federal case carries stiffer potential sentences, and there is no federal equivalent to New York's emotional disturbance law.

Alex Murdaugh retrial fight begins as judge weighs DNA test, shackles and trial date

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — Alex Murdaugh returned to South Carolina court Monday morning in the shadow of the clerk of court scandal that unraveled his convictions and gave one of America’s most notorious defendants a shot at a second trial.

Murdaugh, the disgraced former South Carolina attorney convicted in the 2021 murders of his wife and son before his convictions were overturned, appeared at the 10 a.m. status and scheduling hearing in Lexington County, South Carolina.

South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Debra R. McCaslin said she is considering April 5 as the new trial date, though she said the timing could depend in part on how long requested DNA testing takes.

McCaslin warned both sides that once she sets a trial date, she does not grant continuances without a strong reason.

"Please do not think that this case is going to be tried a year later, because it's not. We're going forward," McCaslin said.

The potential trial date was one of several issues discussed on Monday as both sides prepare for round two of Murdaugh's murder case, which continues to attract significant attention from the media and public.

"I see we have a full house," McCaslin said as Murdaugh entered the packed courtroom dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit, and shackles around his waist and hands.

The hearing marked Murdaugh’s first court appearance related to his potential retrial since he was sentenced in his sweeping financial crimes cases in 2023 and 2024.

The hearing did not dive into the grisly murders of his wife, Maggie, 52, and their younger son, Paul, 22, who were found shot to death near the dog kennels at the family’s hunting estate, known as Moselle, in June 2021.

Instead, the proceeding focused on scheduling, discovery and other procedural matters as prosecutors and defense attorneys began mapping out what could become Murdaugh’s second murder trial.

As the hearing kicked off, prosecutors and the defense team sparred on evidence and scheduling.

"There's absolutely no evidence that Maggie Murdaugh is in a struggle with anyone, that she had any sort of defensive wounds that she was scratched from, sort of attacker," lead prosecutor Creighton Waters said.

"And we also know that it's very common with how sensitive DNA is. We're constantly shedding DNA and picking up DNA from others by shaking hands and door knobs and all the rest of it. So, you know, this is a bit of a red herring, but that doesn't mean that we are not willing to discuss with the defense anything that they want to do that would be reasonable."

Murdaugh's lead defense attorney, Dick Harpootlian, said that the team has eight experts lined up for the retrial, saying that a retrial by the end of year "cannot be done."

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has indicated he hopes to try the case by the end of the year, previously telling Fox News Digital that he plans to try it "as quickly and expeditiously as possible."

"Look, I'm being aspirational when I say this, but we would like to try to get this case up before January 2027. That would be our goal," he said.

McCaslin also addressed the dissemination of state grand jury material and whether Murdaugh could have access to a computer in prison as his defense team prepares for a possible retrial.

Waters argued that Murdaugh had already had his prison tablet taken away and claimed he was caught receiving contraband from a family member. Waters also pointed to Murdaugh’s fraud convictions as a reason for caution.

Harpootlian countered that denying Murdaugh access to a laptop would slow the trial process.

"The idea of bringing him in here, chained up, the idea of not letting him have access to a laptop, the idea of opposing everything we're trying to do is expedite this process. I understand it's Mr. Waters' job to legally prejudice the defendant, but this is beyond the pale," Harpootlian said.

McCaslin said the prison warden would not allow Murdaugh to have a laptop in his cell because of safety concerns. The judge said Murdaugh is entitled to all of his discovery materials, but said the court must also account for prison security issues.

The judge said defense counsel may bring a laptop and review materials with Murdaugh in a conference room, but someone must remain with him. She said she would not allow Murdaugh to keep a laptop in his cell.

The hearing then turned to whether Murdaugh could dress in street clothes and appear unshackled during court proceedings.

"Potential jurors are watching this right now. It's going to be wherever this goes. It's going to be difficult to get it there. And to the extent that they're parading him around in a jumpsuit, shackled like an animal, impact their view, it's going to make it more difficult for us to get a jury," Harpootlian said.

The court later turned to a defense motion seeking further DNA analysis.

Defense attorney Jim Griffin said Murdaugh’s team wants to use advanced DNA technology that he said did not exist in 2021 but is available now. Griffin said the Houston-based DNA lab, Othram, is the lab the defense wants to use. Othram helped solve the Idaho student murder case.

Waters said he was willing to facilitate conversations with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) about the defense request.

Griffin said the DNA at issue came from Maggie Murdaugh’s left fingernail and had previously been tested by SLED. He said the result showed the DNA was not Alex Murdaugh’s and instead came from an unknown male.

Griffin argued the issue was worth examining further, saying a shell casing from the gun that killed Maggie Murdaugh was found under her body.

"I haven't said no," McCaslin said.

The judge then moved to the defense motion for a change of venue. She gave prosecutors time to review the motion and asked both sides to present suggestions before she makes a decision. If the parties cannot agree, McCaslin said she will decide.

McCaslin said future pretrial hearings would likely be held in Lexington County because the courthouse has a large courtroom, established security and space to accommodate attorneys, the public and the media.

The next pretrial hearing was set for Aug. 14. McCaslin asked attorneys to file motions by Aug. 7 so she has time to review them.

The hearing concluded shortly after 11 a.m.

Murdaugh’s defense team has pushed for a venue change out of the circuit, arguing that the legal circus surrounding the case and the misconduct allegations tied to the original trial make it impossible for him to get a fair retrial.

Venue changes are typically a steep climb, criminal defense attorney Donna Rotunno told Fox News Digital, because courts often find that wall-to-wall publicity follows a notorious defendant no matter where the case is moved.

"A change of venue is always a difficult task because the court’s position is, no matter where you live, you know about this," she said. "You can read about it. You can watch these trials when they’re televised. So a lot of times courts will say it doesn’t matter if we change the venue."

But Murdaugh’s case, she said, is different.

His murder convictions were overturned after the South Carolina Supreme Court found improper comments by former Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca "Becky" Hill, whose conduct became the basis for Murdaugh’s bid for a new trial.

"I think in this situation, it’s a little bit different, given the fact that you had a clerk in that county basically cause the whole reason we’re having a new trial," Rotunno said. "So I do think, given the appearance of impropriety here, it would probably behoove the court to make the decision for the change of venue."

Rotunno said keeping the case in the same county could create problems down the line if Murdaugh were convicted again.

"I think if you’re looking at the thought of appeals down the line, if he were to lose in that same county, you may open yourself up to more scrutiny," she said.

Murdaugh, once a powerful Lowcountry lawyer from a prominent legal dynasty, was convicted in March 2023 of gunning down Maggie and Paul. Prosecutors argued at trial that Murdaugh killed them to gain sympathy and distract from a collapsing web of financial crimes, stolen client money and lies.

The case was thrown back into turmoil after allegations surfaced that Hill made improper comments to jurors during the trial. Murdaugh’s defense argued she tampered with the jury to secure a guilty verdict and boost publicity for a book.

The court found that Hill was drawn by the "siren call of celebrity" and allowed public attention to overcome her duty. Hill co-authored a book about the proceedings, "Behind the Doors of Justice: The Murdaugh Murders," which the lawsuit says earned roughly $100,000 before being withdrawn amid plagiarism allegations.

In December 2025, Hill pleaded guilty to four charges: obstruction of justice and perjury for showing a reporter photographs that were sealed court exhibits and then lying about it, plus two counts of misconduct in office for taking bonuses and promoting a book she wrote on the trial through her public office.

A rare filing from prominent economists and former government officials highlighted the high stakes in the Supreme Court's decision allowing Lisa Cook, a top official at the Federal Reserve, to remain in her role while her legal challenge to President Donald Trump's firing moves forward.

In a 5-4 ruling, the justices concluded that the Federal Reserve occupies a unique constitutional position among independent federal agencies, allowing Cook to remain in office as her lawsuit proceeds.

A Florida tattoo shop that went viral after refusing service to active-duty military members and veterans is now offering customers a 20% discount if they can prove they are not in the military or law enforcement, further inflaming critics who accuse the business of discriminating against those who serve.

A Sunday post on Facebook from Revival Tattoo Collective in Largo, Florida, read, "I see a lot of shops supporting the military and law enforcement offering deals locally. I’ve got one as well, 20 percent discount on any tattoo if you can prove you’re not law enforcement or military."

"And don’t get all in the comments ‘he really needs the work’ blah blah blah," the post continued. "This is just giving back to people who aren’t hateful like yourselves, and can see things for what it is."

"You can’t start sh-- and then play victim," the user continued. "I’m so confused by the amount of hatred and hypocrisy. Anyways … since we are out here clout chasing because you run a sham business and all your artists left … I am a veteran and I own a local handyman business. If anyone needs work done in the Tampa area. I’m offering 20% off for my brothers and sisters in any public or federal service uniform."

Wiener’s office released a lengthy statement about the two incidents, posting online that Wiener was "harassed, threatened, and physically intimidated while attending public events to engage with the San Francisco community."

"I have no objection whatsoever to anyone disagreeing with me, opposing me, or protesting me," Wiener said in the statement. "All of that is core to democracy. I also have no issue when people talk to me on the street and ask questions or express opposition. That’s democracy, even when the people engaging in this conduct misrepresent my views."

"But when opposition and disagreement transition to harassment, including cornering me, touching me, or trying to physically bully me out of a public event, that crosses a line. We’re living in a time when violence is all too often threatened or used against people in public life. In San Francisco, we’re better than that."

Wiener, who had previously stopped short of using the word "genocide," reversed course in January and said he believed Israel’s actions in Gaza qualified as genocide. The California Post editorial board commented on the shift in a recent piece ,saying, "The irony: It wasn’t enough," the outlet wrote. "Nothing is ever enough. Wiener remains a target, even though he changed his mind, because he is Jewish."

Spanberger's latest 'gun-grabbing nonsense' prompts action from Trump DOJ: 'Stay tuned!'

A top DOJ prosecutor responded to concerns raised by a Virginia resident and fellow Trump administration official over alleged slow-walking of background checks after a judge temporarily blocked a sweeping "assault weapons" ban that otherwise was set to take effect Wednesday.

The uproar comes as Richmond becomes the latest Democrat-run capital to pursue restrictions on Second Amendment-related activities. The Supreme Court's recent rulings against New York's and the District of Columbia's gun laws have given conservatives major legal victories in their efforts to challenge similar measures.

Amid Virginia's legal fight, critics accused state police of intentionally slow-walking background checks to effectively backdoor-enforce the law while it is litigated. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon responded that her office is "all over this" case and other instances of "gun-grabbing nonsense nationally."

Joined by Gun Owners of America, a Virginia resident seeking to purchase firearms from a dealer in Kilmarnock, Virginia, sued to block Richmond's new law imposing criminal penalties for selling or purchasing "assault firearm[s]," which critics said is a sweeping violation of the Second Amendment.

The inclusion of the Kilmarnock gun store established legal standing in GOP-friendly Lancaster County in Virginia's Northern Neck, where Judge John Martin blocked enforcement of the law through Dec. 31.

After the ruling, FTC Commissioner Andrew Ferguson tweeted that he encountered what he called an "en masse" delay in background checks after visiting his local gun store. The checks are handled by the Virginia State Police.

The top cop at VSP, Col. Jeffrey Katz, is both a Spanberger appointee and listed the defendant in the Lancaster case.

"The Virginia State Police is is delaying background checks en masse in one of the most flagrant violations of our rights that I've seen. This is outrageous," Ferguson said.

"Our police are aiding radical leftists to disarm Americans."

When asked about the allegation, VSP suggested there was no intentional slow-walking and said troopers have seen a spike in applications over the past month.

"The Firearms Transaction Center is seeing a large number of transactions. The [center] has processed over 100,000 transactions in June alone and have been averaging over 5,000 transactions a day," said Matthew Demlein, an ombudsman for the state police.

"The [center] is working diligently to complete each transaction."

Philip Van Cleave — whose Virginia Citizens Defense League is a co-plaintiff in the case — also said he was not convinced VSP was intentionally holding up background checks in light of the Lancaster decision.

"I don’t want to be unfair to the Virginia State Police," Van Cleave tweeted. "I’m not convinced that the delays are intentional."

"I just don’t think VSP and their computer system is geared up to handle the immense volume that the gun-control idiots in the general assembly have created."

Another critic of the ban shared a section of the Code of Virginia that appeared to allow firearm transfers to proceed despite background check delays.

If a dealer fulfills the requirements laid out by VSP but police do not respond within five business days, the dealer may complete the sale or transfer of the firearm without violating the law.

Fox News Digital reached out to DOJ to determine what actions are being taken or planned, given allegations from Ferguson and others.

Martin’s ruling stated that the firearm characteristics identified in the ban lack a rational basis because handguns are excluded despite fitting the lawmakers' stated military-style rationale.

The ban was originally authored in the House by Del. Dan Helmer, D-Fairfax, and in the Senate by Sen. Saddam Salim, D-Dunn Loring.

In comments reported by Courthouse News Service, Van Cleave separately noted that a commission set up by Democratic then-Gov. Tim Kaine following the Virginia Tech massacre found that gun-magazine limits like those focused on in the new law would have "made no difference in the outcome."

Attorney General Jay Jones, arguing for the state, said in a statement that "gun violence is the key driver of violent crime in this commonwealth and nation, and assault weapons are designed intentionally to inflict maximum damage in a matter of seconds."

During his 2025 campaign, text messages surfaced showing Jones had envisioned the shooting of the former Republican speaker of the Virginia House.

"The assault weapons ban passed by the General Assembly and signed by the Governor will save lives in the Commonwealth and is compliant with the Constitution of Virginia," Jones said.

When she signed the law in May, Spanberger lamented that the legislature declined to accept her proposed changes that would have carved out commonly used hunting firearms.

"I am signing this bill into law because firearms designed to inflict maximum casualties do not belong on our streets. We are taking this step to protect families and support the law enforcement officers who work every day to keep our communities safe," she said, adding that she would work with Salim and Helmer to clarify the law’s language to assuage hunters.

Fox News Digital reached out to Virginia's Republican legislative minority for additional comment. The House was expected to go into session late Monday, where the subject could come up.

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook's legal battle against President Donald Trump centered, in part, on a trio of mortgages she obtained before joining the nation's central bank.

The loans, tied to properties in Michigan, Georgia and Massachusetts, drew scrutiny regarding whether Cook misrepresented how the homes would be used — as primary residences or otherwise. Trump cited those allegations in his effort to boot her from the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, arguing they constituted cause for her removal.

The Supreme Court ultimately ruled 5-4 that Cook can remain on as a Fed governor while her separate lawsuit challenging her firing proceeds.

Cook challenged Trump's attempt to oust her in federal court, arguing that the move was unlawful and threatened the Federal Reserve's independence. Her lawsuit, filed Aug. 28, did not address allegations that she listed two homes as a primary residence on mortgage documents.

The allegations originated with Bill Pulte, a Trump appointee who oversees the federal agency that regulates Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Pulte, who is now acting Director of National Intelligence, linked Cook to the trio of properties in referrals sent to the Justice Department, which later confirmed it had opened a criminal investigation into allegations of mortgage application fraud.

The mortgages cited in the Justice Department probe were issued in 2021, before former President Joe Biden nominated Cook to the Federal Reserve Board.

At issue were the preferential terms that come with primary-residence loans, which lenders typically view as lower risk than mortgages for vacation homes or rental properties.

Cook disclosed all three mortgages in a financial filing with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics in June 2025, listing them alongside her income, retirement accounts and investments.

The filing also showed that Cook earned more than $50,000 a year in rental income from her Cambridge, Massachusetts, condominium. Pulte alleged in his DOJ referral that Cook represented the Cambridge condominium as a second home rather than an investment property, despite reporting rental income from the unit.

Cook bought the condo in 2002 when she was a professor at Harvard University. For this property, she obtained a 15-year loan for $361,000 at a rate of 2.5% in April 2021.

Two months later, Cook secured a mortgage for a three-bedroom home in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The 15-year loan for $203,000 at a 2.87% rate through the University of Michigan Credit Union covered the 1,800-square-foot property. At the time, she taught economics and international relations at Michigan State University, roughly an hour’s drive away.

She also obtained a $540,000, 30-year mortgage for a luxury condo above the Four Seasons Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.

The loan, issued by the Bank Fund Staff Federal Credit Union, carried a 3.25% interest rate.

In that loan agreement, Cook "affirmed that this property would serve as her primary residence within 60 days of the execution of the mortgage and would serve as her primary residence for a full year," according to Pulte's referral letter to the Justice Department.

Cook has not publicly explained why both the Michigan and Georgia properties were designated as her primary residence.

Her attorney, Abbe Lowell, denied the allegations in a Sept. 2 filing, writing that Cook "did not ever commit mortgage fraud."

A Houston meteorologist said she was fired from KRPC-TV last week after a viral Instagram post in which she criticized the station, complained that traffic reporting had been overlooked for Emmy Awards and accused the newsroom of tolerating poor workplace standards.

"No longer with KPRC — and for that, I’m truly grateful. Maybe you’ve read the headlines?" Brittany Begley said, according to Chron.

Brittany Begley, 44, confirmed her departure from the NBC affiliate in a Wednesday Instagram post after her earlier comments drew national attention. She told the Houston Chronicle that she was fired and said she did not agree with how weekend scheduling had been handled.

"I do disagree with how the weekends were handled after several attempts to make it better for all," she said.

Begley’s departure came less than three weeks after a June 7 Instagram post in which she said she felt worn down by the industry and frustrated by what she viewed as a lack of recognition for her work.

In the post, Begley said traffic reporters were often overlooked despite covering wrecks, road closures and other information tied to public safety.

"Never won an Emmy because the markets I worked in never thought traffic reporting was worthy of one," Begley said.

She said the experience left her questioning whether the industry valued her work, while arguing that she still believed she had taken a stand.

Begley also criticized KPRC's newsroom culture, accusing some coworkers of being late and unprepared before broadcasts while management allegedly allowed that behavior to reach the air.

"Consistently late, not even mic’d up ten minutes before a show, then put it on air as a segment," she said.

After the post spread online, Begley said she was not trying to insult colleagues but wanted to raise broader concerns about accountability, workplace culture and mental health in television news, Chron reported.

"I believe in accountability. This conversation won’t be going away anytime soon," Begley said.

KPRC News Director Ana Lastra confirmed Begley's exit to the Houston Chronicle and wished her well, but said the station would not discuss the circumstances of her departure further.

"As a matter of policy, we do not comment on personnel matters," Lastra said.

Sean McLaughlin, KPRC vice president and general manager, previously told the New York Post that the station was aware of Begley’s post and treated employee concerns seriously.

"Our station takes issues raised by employees seriously and is committed to fostering a positive workplace. As this matter involves an individual employee, we have no further comment," McLaughlin said.

Begley said in her follow-up post that she planned to continue speaking publicly about the media business and wanted a larger platform to advocate for people who built careers from entry-level roles, according to Chron.
