Alanis Morissette says websites were built to plot her murder after 'Jagged Little Pill' success

Alanis Morissette became one of music’s biggest stars with "Jagged Little Pill," but behind the blockbuster success was a frightening wave of hostility that she says included websites plotting her murder.

Morissette, who skyrocketed to fame after the release of her 1995 album, opened up on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast about the hostility she faced at the time, including death threats and attacks from some fellow musicians.

"There was terror and resistance, but that's just normal," the singer recalled of the response she received from her lead single "You Oughta Know."

"But you know, at that point, project onto me all you want," Morissette said. "Project that I'm the Antichrist. Project that I'm terrifying or ... basically too much. My whole life I've just heard that I'm too much."

But the backlash Morissette described went far beyond criticism of her music or personality. As her fame intensified, she recalled the hostility escalating to a chilling level.

"There was a lot of hate," she told host Alex Cooper. "There were websites constructed to figure out how to murder me most elegantly.

"Well, there was a lot of hate, and it was very, very out there. And a lot of people, a lot of artists whom I respected and lived for, were disparagingly speaking about me. Later, Sinéad apologized, which was really classy. But, yeah, I mean, it was not a girl squad. There were no girl squads."

Morissette said the hostility was particularly painful when it came from fellow artists, including musicians she admired. Among her vocal critics at the time was Courtney Love.

"I think Courtney Love was calling me fake, which is so funny," she recalled. "And she also apologized later and said very kind things."

Decades later, Morissette said she views the reaction through a different lens. She compared the resentment she encountered to modern-day jealousy surrounding Taylor Swift and argued that women were often made to feel there was room for only one at the top.

"They were upset. I was, you know, it's like people being jealous of Taylor Swift," she explained. "And I think the implication there for me was that the presupposition on the planet was that there's one throne. 'Only Alex can sit in the throne, everybody. Everyone else, you fail. You lose. You're ugly. Bye.' What? That's patriarchy. That's scarcity mindset."

Morissette started performing at a young age, including an early stint on the Canadian children’s television series "You Can’t Do That on Television." She initially found success as a dance-pop singer in Canada, but her career changed dramatically with the 1995 release of "Jagged Little Pill."

The album shot to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and turned Morissette into an international star.

"Jagged Little Pill" also earned her Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album, while "You Oughta Know" won Best Rock Song and Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.

Morissette was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2026.

Woman says her life flashed before her eyes as a grizzly bear charged at her and group of hikers

A woman out on a hike had her life flash before her eyes after turning around and noticing a grizzly bear running toward her and a group of hikers. She does everything you're not supposed to do in that situation, but she did avoid being attacked by the bear.

"Almost didn’t make it to this birthday… 'Go on a hike,' they said. 'It'll be fun,' they said… Life flashed before my eyes….," she wrote in the caption of the video of her too close for comfort encounter with a grizzly bear in the wild.

The woman and a group of hikers were walking down a trail at Glacier National Park when all of a sudden a grizzly bear came charging toward them out of the woods.

The woman who posted the video on Instagram can be seen turning, looking, then running away. She knew she wasn't supposed to do that when a grizzly is charging at you, but couldn’t help herself.

Plus, she joked, "I knew I could outrun SOMEONE…! JK! But seriously…. No…I would never!"

She technically did, but to be fair to her, she also warned the others as she ran by about the charging grizzly bear. In the end, she happily reports, "No dumb tourists were harmed."

Only after reviewing the footage a few times did she notice that the grizzly wasn't actually charging at them. Yes, it was in their direction. And yes, that is reason enough to freak out.

But the bear was actually chasing a chipmunk, which you can see if you look for it, she pointed out in the comment section of the clip and in an unedited version of the encounter.

"Still, learned a VERY valuable lesson: I desperately need to work on my flight response," she admitted in the caption of the unedited video. "10/10 experience. Would NOT recommend."

A panel on MS NOW’s "Morning Joe" mockingly prayed Thursday for Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., after he gave a fiery speech at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas.

The Republican Party is holding its first-ever midterm convention in Dallas to rally voters as the GOP fights to keep control of Congress in November.

During the convention, Scott gave a fiery speech, declaring, "The only way to keep dangerous, radical, weird out of the Senate is a united Republican Party, standing with our President, Donald J. Trump! Stand for the president, Donald J. Trump!

"No, no they don’t," he responded to Scott’s rhetoric about Democrats. "But they are genuinely worried about you, Tim. Really worried about you, Tim."

He then turned to fellow MS NOW host Rev. Al Sharpton for his thoughts.

"And to play to Trump like that, you’d only do that if you were in fear of facing, you know, a firing squad or something."

Sharpton went on to blast Scott for demonizing Democrats, saying he does not do so to Republicans or even Trump.

Scarborough agreed, saying while he laments that Republicans have changed in that they are no longer in favor of "melting pot" ideals of welcoming immigrants, he does not argue that they hate America.

Trump administration accuses prestigious law school of favoring Black applicants over White, Asian peers

The Trump administration on Wednesday blasted the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law for allegedly favoring Black applicants while discriminating against Asian and White students, marking its latest federal action targeting race-conscious admissions policies at universities.

The Department of Justice (DOJ), along with the Department of Education, found Berkeley Law in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits racial discrimination in programs and activities receiving federal funds.

"The data produced by Berkeley Law demonstrates a strong bias against Asian and White applicants, with a corresponding bias in favor of Black applicants," the DOJ said.

The findings came after officials launched a compliance review of Berkeley Law in March 2025, roughly two years after the Supreme Court struck a major blow to affirmative action programs many universities used in admissions for decades. California had already banned affirmative action in public education under Proposition 209, enacted in 1996.

According to the DOJ's analysis, Black applicants in 2025 had "5.8 times higher odds of admission than comparable white applicants."

An analysis of LSAT scores for admitted students in 2024 and 2025 found that 37% of Black admitted applicants scored below 99% of admitted White applicants.

In addition, half of the school's admitted Black applicants had LSAT scores "below 95% of the admitted white applicants."

According to figures cited by the DOJ, median LSAT scores from 2021 through 2025 showed a persistent disparity between racial groups, with Black admits scoring around 165. Asian and White admits scored around 172, while Hispanic admits had median scores around 169.

"The median Black admit consistently has an LSAT score about 5 points lower than the median white or Asian admits," the department said in a letter to attorney Tania Faransso, who is representing the law school.

DOJ OPENS PROBE INTO PRESTIGIOUS COLLEGE OVER ALLEGED DISCRIMINATION FAVORING MINORITY STUDENTS

As of October 2025, Berkeley Law had 1,128 students enrolled. Of those, 516 were White, 293 were Asian, 51 were Black and 130 were Hispanic.

In a statement to Fox News, Berkeley Law firmly rejected the allegations, saying its admissions decisions comply with federal law and Proposition 209.

However, the school noted that the laws still allow institutions to build diverse student bodies by considering race-neutral factors, which can include socioeconomic status and personal experiences.

"Our admissions policy is clear that race is not considered in any way in admissions decisions," the school said. "Proposition 209, federal statutes and the Supreme Court’s decisions do not preclude schools from pursuing diversity so long as they give no preferences based on race. Berkeley Law does not do so."

UC Berkeley’s central administration also said the school is "committed to ensuring that every student is admitted based on their merit, and not on their race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin."

ICE arrests Peruvian national accused of illegally voting in 2024 election as DHS cites similar cases

A Peruvian national was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after authorities say she falsely claimed to be a U.S. citizen and illegally voted in the 2024 general election in Kansas, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Thursday.

Mariana Alexandra Dewey, a lawful permanent resident and citizen of Peru, was arrested by Homeland Security Investigations special agents after authorities determined she unlawfully voted in the Nov. 5, 2024, election in Sedgwick County, according to DHS.

The arrest comes as the Trump administration continues its crackdown on noncitizens accused of illegally voting in U.S. elections.

"This alien violated the sacred right of every American citizen," DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in a news release.

"If even one noncitizen votes, that steals the voice of a U.S. citizen," Mullin continued. "Only American citizens have the right to participate in our political and election processes, and DHS will continue to investigate, seek criminal prosecution and ultimately remove aliens who vote to ensure free, fair and honest elections."

According to DHS, election records showed Dewey submitted a Kansas voter registration application and cast a provisional ballot after certifying, under penalty of perjury, that she was a U.S. citizen.

NONCITIZEN CHARGED WITH VOTING IN MINNESOTA 2024 ELECTION AFTER ADMITTING ‘MISTAKE’ TO INVESTIGATORS

During a subsequent interview with investigators, authorities said Dewey acknowledged she was a lawful permanent resident, not a U.S. citizen, and admitted voting in the 2024 general election. DHS said she later pleaded guilty to disorderly election conduct under Kansas law.

The department said Dewey was taken into ICE custody Sept. 1 after HSI agents located her at a residence in Wichita.

DHS described the arrest as the latest in the administration's effort to crack down on noncitizens accused of illegally voting in American elections.

The department pointed to several recent cases, including enforcement actions involving noncitizens from Colombia, Slovakia, Australia, Mexico and Mauritania, as well as charges against four noncitizens in New Jersey accused of illegally voting in federal elections or falsely claiming U.S. citizenship.

Trump signs act clearing the way for Medal of Honor monument on National Mall

President Donald Trump signed legislation Thursday authorizing the future National Medal of Honor Monument to be located within the Reserve of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., near the Lincoln Memorial, during a ceremony honoring Medal of Honor recipients in Arlington, Texas.

Trump signed the Hershel "Woody" Williams National Medal of Honor Monument Location Act at the National Medal of Honor Museum after touring the museum and meeting more than a dozen recipients.

The legislation does not create the monument itself, which Congress previously authorized in 2021. Instead, it allows the future monument to be located within the Reserve, a protected area of the National Mall that includes some of Washington's most prominent monuments and memorials.

Trump greeted and shook hands with recipients before taking the stage for the signing ceremony.

"We're privileged to have with us 15 of the 65 living recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor," Trump told the audience.

"When I see the recipients of the Congressional Medal, those that are living, many are dead. They died. And they died in battle. Some of the battles are … I read inscriptions of what took place. That level of bravery is incredible," Trump said.

The act is named for Williams, a Marine who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Iwo Jima and was the last surviving World War II Medal of Honor recipient when he died in 2022.

Trump recounted Williams' heroism before recognizing members of his family who attended the ceremony.

"In the Battle of Iwo Jima, he carved a path to American victory, literally carved a path so soldiers could get in and win through a deadly gantlet of enemy strongholds," Trump said.

"And back and forth, he went. He just kept going back and forth," Trump continued. "And one machine gun nest after another. He knocked [them] out, and he did it for hours and hours. People said they've never seen anything quite like it."

National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation Chairman Charlotte Jones said 16 of the nation's 65 living Medal of Honor recipients were present at the museum Thursday.

"This is not a war museum. This is a museum about heart, about courage, about sacrifice and patriotism," Jones said.

Jones said that bipartisan support reflected the significance of the Medal of Honor and the values associated with it.

"That is the inspirational power of the Medal of Honor," Jones said. "And that is why this project matters."

The future monument will be located near the Lincoln Memorial, though its precise site has not yet been selected. The National Park Service will award the specific site, after which the foundation said it will launch a design competition.

Trump also reflected on the sacrifices represented by the recipients gathered for Thursday's ceremony.

Trump said the future monument, together with the museum, would provide a permanent way to preserve those stories.

We knew another plane had been hijacked somewhere over Pennsylvania, but we did not know where it was or where it was headed. Then came the news from Shanksville — and, later, the story of what its passengers and crew had done.

Less than an hour after United Flight 93 left Newark, four al Qaeda terrorists seized the plane and forced the passengers and crew to the rear of the aircraft.

Flight 93 was different from the other hijacked planes that morning because a ground delay gave its passengers time to learn of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. When the plane turned toward Washington, they knew that Flight 93 had become another weapon of terror.

Through calls to loved ones and people on the ground, they learned what had happened in New York and at the Pentagon. They understood that the hijackers did not intend for them to survive and that countless more innocent lives were at stake.

C.S. Lewis wrote that courage is "the form of every virtue at the testing point." For the ordinary Americans aboard Flight 93, that testing point came without warning — and within minutes they responded in an extraordinary, distinctly American way.

They took a vote and made a plan. At 9:57 a.m., Todd Beamer, an account manager for Oracle, uttered the now-famous words, "Let’s roll," and they charged the cockpit and the knife-wielding jihadis. For six minutes, they fought to retake the plane. At 10:03, the plane flipped upside down and plowed into a farmer’s field near Shanksville. Their sacrifice denied the terrorists their target.

Twenty-five years later, their example offers lessons not only about who we were then, but also who we must continue to be.

We must remain vigilant in the face of evil. At home, that means rejecting the poisonous idea, voiced by Hasan Piker, that America "deserved 9/11." Abroad, it means taking seriously enemies who chant "Death to America" and mean it. We Americans do not go looking for a fight; but when called upon, we show the strength and courage that should make our enemies think twice. Even now, the men and women of the United States military are reminding the world that threats against America have consequences.

Vigilance must be backed by strength. When the time to act arrives, the time to prepare has passed. The passengers and crew of Flight 93 had only minutes and whatever strength they could summon. Today, advances in AI, robotics and other technologies are transforming both the threats we face and the tools we have to defeat them. America needs the strongest military in the world, equipped with the best technology and ready to give those who serve every advantage when called to fight.

Yet because evil is real, we must not blur the distinction between genuine evil and ordinary political disagreement. In those decisive minutes aboard Flight 93, no one asked who was a Republican or Democrat, where anyone came from or how anyone worshiped. They acted together as Americans. That same sense of common purpose swept the country after September 11 as strangers helped strangers, communities grieved together and a generation raised its hand to serve.

Today, that unity can seem distant. Our politics too often turns disagreement into enmity and fellow Americans into adversaries. September 11 reminds us that before we are Republicans, Independents or Democrats, we are Americans.

From Gettysburg to Normandy to Shanksville, ordinary Americans have shown the spirit, courage and character that define America at its best. President George W. The passengers and crew were students and retirees, an ironworker and an attorney, business travelers and flight attendants — ordinary people who answered an extraordinary call.

But we cannot take that spirit for granted. Only 39% of Americans say they are "extremely proud" to be American, down from 70% in 2003, and pride is even lower among younger Americans. At the same time, too many boys and young men are struggling to find purpose and a path into adulthood. Character must be taught and cultivated. We must tell these stories, call the next generation to service, and teach them that courage means self-command, responsibility and putting others before themselves.

That is why I encourage every American to visit the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, where I will join others in remembrance today. Bring your children and grandchildren. Stand at the crash site and listen to the calls made in the flight’s final minutes — some to say goodbye, others to explain what was happening and what they intended to do about it. You cannot hear their voices and leave unchanged.

Most of us will never face such an extraordinary test. But all of us are called, in ways large and small, to serve our country and leave it better for those who come after us.

Trump faces reckoning as GOP figures label $5K promise a 'socialist vote-buying scheme'

President Donald Trump’s proposal to send $5,000 checks to American adults if Republicans win both chambers of Congress is forcing Republicans to debate an idea more commonly associated with the Democratic side of the aisle: sending direct government payments to voters.

Called a "socialist vote-buying scheme" by former GOP Rep. Bob Good of Virginia, the so-called Trump Dividend would only be handed down if Republicans keep the House and Senate in November, the president announced at the party's midterm convention in Dallas.

Good warned that the checks would add to the national debt, which has topped $40 trillion.

The plan could cost more than $1.2 trillion, based on estimates of roughly 240 million eligible adults. The president cannot direct the Treasury to issue the checks without a law providing that authority, so Congress would need to authorize the spending plan.

"If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them … I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000," Trump said during his keynote address Wednesday night.

He compared the payment to a cash distribution from a successful company to its shareholders and said the money would have to be spent domestically.

"The only caveat I have is that the dividend that we're making must be spent in the United States of America," Trump said. "We don't want you going to Canada to spend the money."

"If you keep us in power and allow us to continue to do these things, then you’re going to share in some of the benefit of this incredible wealth that we’re creating in the United States of America," Vice President JD Vance said after Trump unveiled his new idea.

Conservative commentator Matt Walsh called the plan "flagrant bribery" and said Republicans could help working Americans by allowing them to keep more of their own money through tax cuts.

"Holding it as a carrot on the stick for after the election is just shameless," Walsh wrote.

Vance and Trump both pointed to tariff revenue as a potential funding source for the payments, and questions emerged over where the money would come from to fund the dividends.

"The reason the Democrats can’t do that is because they don’t do tariffs. They don’t take in money. All they know is poverty," Trump said Wednesday night.

Treasury data show the federal government collected about $154.4 billion in customs duties from Oct. 1, 2025, through July 31, 2026, which would cover roughly 13% of the estimated $1.2 trillion cost of sending $5,000 checks to about 240 million adults.

The administration has not provided an income threshold for the proposed middle-class payments or explained how much tariff revenue would be dedicated to the program. The remaining cost would have to be covered through other federal revenue, spending reductions or additional borrowing.

Vance also suggested in an interview after the president's speech Wednesday that the proposal could be limited to middle-class Americans rather than every adult citizen, potentially lowering the cost.

The VP defended the idea as "fundamentally a dividend for American workers," arguing that tariffs have generated revenue from foreign companies and countries that have taken advantage of American workers.

The proposal’s funding and eligibility questions have fueled criticism from fiscal conservatives, who say the plan would create a new government benefit while adding to the national debt.

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, said the estimated $1.2 trillion cost of the dividend proposal could instead be used to eliminate taxes for married parents with dependents earning up to $200,000.

"Or maybe some of us think dependency is evil & soul-sucking in all its forms," Roy wrote in a follow-up post.

That criticism from Republicans reflects a broader conservative argument that tax cuts are preferable to direct payments because they reduce the government’s role rather than create a new reason for Americans to rely on it.

James Fishback, a former Florida gubernatorial candidate who previously proposed a $5,000 DOGE dividend, said his plan would have returned savings generated by spending cuts. Meanwhile, he argued Trump’s proposal would add to the debt without a comparable reduction in government spending.

Investor Joe Lonsdale called the idea "bread and circus bribes." Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson urged Republican leaders to reject it and focus on reducing the debt.

Other Republicans and Trump allies are moving in the opposite direction.

Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, said he would prepare legislation to pass the dividend after the election, while Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., asked voters how they would spend their $5,000.

DALLAS — There’s a push in the Senate to turn President Donald Trump’s pitch of $5,000 checks for Americans into a reality, with a couple of caveats along the way.

Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, plans to introduce legislation that would codify the dividend checks and wants it done as soon as the upcoming midterm elections are over, when the balance of power could tilt in favor of Democrats.

But the money, Moreno told Fox News Digital, wouldn’t come from taxpayers’ coffers. Instead, he wants to approve certain structural tariffs to act as a "market access fee" that would find its way back into the pockets of Americans.

And it can only be spent in the U.S.

"This dividend would be something that is allowing working Americans to share in the prosperity of this country," Moreno said. "The money would be used only here in the United States, so it's not to be used outside the United States. I think it would provide a big economic boost to our economy."

"So, if you're a company out there, anywhere in the world, you want to sell your products in America, you either make it here in the United States, or you pay a fee to enter our market," he continued. "That money goes to funding this one-time dividend."

Trump floated the plan Wednesday night during the Republicans’ midterm convention in Dallas, where the GOP and several — but not all — vulnerable incumbents and candidates flocked to energize their base and pitch why they should maintain control of Congress.

The cost, however, could be an eye-popping $1.2 trillion. Moreno argued that the cost was worth it and noted that despite the steps Republicans have taken to lower costs, Americans are still feeling the crunch.

"It's about providing relief," Moreno said. "It's acknowledgment that during the Biden years, it was so bad for working families, that, despite what we've already done in 18 months, it just isn't enough to get working families to basically so that they're level, right?"

"Because they're underwater right now," he continued. "I think it's extremely important for us to understand in elected office that working families are struggling."

For the plan to work, Republicans would need to maintain their control of both chambers of Congress, and it comes as the nation’s federal deficit skyrocketed to $40 trillion last month and as the GOP has consistently pitched itself as the party of fiscal responsibility against Democrats’ wanton federal spending.

Trump's plan scored one unlikely ally in House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris, R-Md., leader of a pack of fiscal hawks who routinely scoff at Congress’ inability to tackle the nation’s debt.

"Hardworking American taxpayers probably deserve a tax rebate. We're gonna have to discuss, you know, how large a rebate that would be. But I think, again, American taxpayers deserve relief from taxation. I think that's a good idea," Harris told Fox News Digital in an interview during the GOP midterm convention.

REPUBLICAN SOUNDS ALARM ON RISING DEM STAR: 'THIS GUY’S GOING TO BE A PROBLEM'

Harris said such a plan "would have to go through Congress," and he suggested that the party-line budget reconciliation process would be needed to skirt Democratic opposition.

The Senate’s top Republican agreed with Harris.

"It smells very much like a reconciliation issue," Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., told Fox News Digital.

Thune said Senate Republicans would be willing to work with Trump and his team to get the dividends done, but noted that until Wednesday night it was a proposal that "we hadn’t heard before." He argued that the idea showed the difference between the GOP and Democrats seeking power.

"I think it illustrates the clear contrast between us and the Democrats about how you want to, how you see government functioning," Thune said. "And one is in giving more power, control, money in the pockets of the American people, and the other, giving more power to, you know, for people in Washington to tell you how to run your life."

And Republicans will likely have to rely on reconciliation to do it, given that Democrats are already slamming the idea.

"Donald Trump is a known liar. This is the biggest liar to ever serve in government, period. And look, the dividend is not happening," Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., told Fox News Digital. "He promised a dividend on tariffs, that didn't happen. He promised a dividend on Doge, that didn't happen. He promised some strange new dividend from Air Force One, what, six months ago. That never happened."

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., recoiled and slammed the move as emblematic of Trump’s presidency being "so failed and broken, he is resorting to trying to bribe the American people for their votes."

"An insult to Americans, to democracy, and an admission of how absolutely screwed he is," Schumer said on X.

Moreno countered that when it comes to dumping tens of billions of dollars outside the U.S., Democrats were all on board but didn’t show the same vigor when it came to seeing money flow back into America.

"So look, at the end of the day, these politicians are all hypocritical. They love helping anybody on earth except for working Americans," Moreno said. "They love giving money to foreign countries. They love funding endless wars. They love having us solve the entirety of the world's problems. When it comes to helping working Americans, all of a sudden, there's no money. What we're saying is no."

I think it’s bad, in the first case for Israel, what’s happening, and I think it’s really bad for the United States, what’s happening," Clinton told MS NOW's "Morning Joe."

"This was a failure of protecting the people of Israel. He’s been told what was going to happen. So, if the Israelis want to vote for that again, then I think the United States has to take a very tough position."

"President Trump has a strong relationship with Prime Minister Netanyahu, and Israel has always been a great ally to the United States. The Israel Defense Forces were incredible partners throughout Operation Epic Fury, which decimated the Iranian regime’s military capabilities in 38 short days," a White House official told Fox News Digital.

Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed warned Netanyahu 10 days before the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks that the terrorist group was planning a major offensive. Netanyahu's office has denied the report.

"The press reports are false. No warning was given to the Prime Minister from the United Arab Emirates before October 7th. If there was any relevant information, it was passed through intelligence channels between the two countries," the prime minister's office posted to X.

Netanyahu's office did not immediately return Fox News Digital's request for comment.

Anytime you let people have that level of violence in a society that you don’t stop, that creeps into the whole society."

Family of 9/11 hero to retrace his steps in final Tunnel to Towers stop

The family of 9/11 hero Stephen Siller will mark the 25th anniversary of the attacks by retracing the FDNY firefighter's steps as he ran through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel toward the World Trade Center.

Frank Siller and other members of the Siller family will participate in the private walk before joining hundreds of friends and supporters at the FDNY Ten House.

The event will conclude the Tunnel to Towers "Steel Across America" tour, which has traveled since May bringing Siller's story and a 21-foot steel beam from the South Tower all across the nation.

On the morning of 9/11, Siller had just concluded his shift with the fire department when he received word that a plane had struck the World Trade Center.

The case is the latest in a string of controversies involving illegal immigrants plaguing the Democrat-led county adjacent to Washington, D.C., where sanctuary policies run up against the Trump administration’s heavy-handed approach to removing people who do not belong in the U.S.

He had been released into the nation’s interior during the Biden administration and enrolled as a junior at Fairfax High School, according to ABC’s Washington affiliate.

Despite facing several years in prison, Flores-Ortiz was released after only about nine months. Several days before his ultimate release, a DOJ immigration judge reportedly ordered him removed from the U.S.

It was then that DHS agents arrested Flores-Ortiz.

A spokesperson for Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney Steve Descano said Flores-Ortiz’s custody and transfer were the responsibility of the sheriff's office, not the commonwealth's attorney.

Fairfax County Sheriff Stacey Ann Kincaid's office told Fox News Digital on Thursday that the agency released Flores-Ortiz into ICE custody, citing a Virginia law that allows for transfer up to five days before a release.

In Flores-Ortiz's case, the existence of a court order may have influenced the decision, but her office did not immediately elaborate.

Descano and Kincaid were grilled by congressional lawmakers over their general noncooperation with ICE earlier this year.

ICE told Fox News Digital that the agency arrested Flores-Ortiz Aug. 31 and deported him Wednesday.

"He just sneakily walked up behind them and put his hand in between their legs. It was not just a butt smack or a butt grab. It was a groping of a private area. It had been occurring for several months," the mom said.

In a letter to parents earlier this year, Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid wrote that such behavior is "unacceptable" and that the district hired outside counsel to "conduct a comprehensive review of the matter."

"How do we distribute goods in a fallen world? And so, I was asked by the people at Turning Point USA to be their dean of the prep year program in Fort Worth. Charlie Kirk's first book in 2022 was called ‘The College Scam.’ In 2026, he implemented his idea for education.

"On Sept. 2, the first class met in Fort Worth. He was assassinated eight days later on Sept. 10. What we're trying to do at prep year is to implement Charlie Kirk's idea for education."

Yet, Dr. Arnott emphasizes that the purpose of prep year is not to dissuade young people from pursuing a college education, but to ensure that they are prepared to do so if they make that choice.

"We're having this interview at FreedomFest. So I think people should have the freedom… they should have the freedom to go to college. They should have the freedom to go into the trades. The problem is the government puts their thumb on the scale by supporting the price of college and, of course, forgiving the debt, which they shouldn't do anyway. If the government would just leave it alone, we'd be happy."

TPUSA's prep year program recently graduated its first class.

"We just dismissed our first class of 34, our inaugural class of prep year. It started Sept. 2, 2025, and ended May 22, 2026. Thirty-four students, about a third will be in college this fall. About a third will go into the trades. I just filled out an application the other day for one of the students to get a Mike Rowe scholarship. And about a third will go on to other things that we don't know yet.

"We are trying to implement what Charlie Kirk wanted. Which is the economic freedom to do with your life as you wish."

The launch of the program was immediately prior to Kirk's tragic assassination on the campus of Utah State University.

"He started [the program] on Sept. 2, just eight days before he was assassinated, and so Charlie Kirk's ideas are really old ideas… they're not new, and so they encompass these things: Christian, liberal arts, classical and a Socratic teaching method. So that's what we do. We'll take in 35 to 50, maybe as many as 80 students in Elgin, Illinois, and Fort Worth this fall. They'll be with us for nine months and we'll teach them those four ways of teaching.

"We'll teach them the disciplines of the Great Book, which is the Bible, of course, great books by people like Dante and Virgil and Homer. We'll teach also how to get along in life, meaning how do you prepare yourself for life. And by the way… that's why we call it prep year. We're actually in the gap year industry. We take in 18-year-olds who have just graduated from high school. But we call it prep year because we are preparing them for life, more than just that education.

"AI can't teach character, and that's what we teach at prep year and that is what Charlie Kirk wanted us to teach. He realized that there would be something coming along like AI that would answer all the technical questions of life, but it won't answer the important questions of life.

"Wisdom is what we want these students to have. It's hard to teach wisdom, but that's what we're attempting to do. But as you said, David, that's why the traditional colleges have failed. They can teach people facts. They can't teach them wisdom.

Less than a week after the closely watched Lindsay Clancy murder trial ended in a mistrial, another Massachusetts case involving a mother accused of killing her children returned to court Thursday.

And the defense sought to have charges dismissed after prosecutors said they were still awaiting a medical examiner's findings.

Prosecutors told the court they are still awaiting the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner's official determination of the children's cause and manner of death, prompting defense attorney Joseph Krowski to ask that the case be dismissed or that Janette MacAusland be released on bail, WCVB reported.

A judge denied both requests, ordering MacAusland to remain held without bail.

Before we start ... man, do I miss TV dinners. The best. Obviously, I grew up in the 90s, so Kid Cuisine was my weapon of choice.

I feel like my mom fed me at least four of those a week. If I tried to even sneak one into my house nowadays for the kids, my wife would have me arrested.

MAHA moms are built different.

Hungry Man was great, too. That's the one that started it all, right? Those things weighed a literal ton out of the freezer. You could kill a man with one of those boxes.

But Lordy, they were good:

Amazing. What a commercial. They just don't make 'em like that anymore. Nowadays, it's all Big Pharma ads and insurance. We had it so good, and we just pissed it all away.

Sad.

Anyway, let's go ahead and get this class started with Donald Trump declaring last night's midterm party vs. NFL opener a triumphant SUCCESS!

Boston radio is handling the loss well today

"The Republican Midterm Convention last night, in Dallas, was a major, sold-out hit, far bigger, better, and more important than anyone thought possible," Trump said via Truth Social.

"It was really something, streaming all over the place, and really big numbers, despite going up against the NFL. The overall numbers beat the NFL. The Arena, which was really nice, beat its own attendance records. The place was packed! There were thousands of people outside who couldn’t get in. Screens were provided. I guess people LOVE TRUMP POLITICS! I’ll be there again tonight to close out the show."

Amazing. Between that declaration and the $5,000 we're all getting in a few months if we play ball, it was a great night!

Look, I have no clue if that's true. Did Trump's convention speech beat the NFL opener ... on NBC? I doubt it. I do know that those numbers aren't even out yet, so I'm not sure they're accurate regardless.

I will say ... he didn't miss much. What an awful game. A great game, because it's football, but a pretty horrible game for three quarters.

Drake Maye was a disaster. AJ Brown got hurt. Sam Darnold played five snaps and then missed the rest of the game.

Maybe stop shoving Pats-Seahawks down our throats, NFL? Ever think about that?

Lordy. Rodgers, of course, wasn't done! Apparently, Danica tried to co-sign the mortgage with him on a new house in Malibu, and he wasn't having it.

Trump defends $5,000 dividend proposal, praises 'beautiful' tariffs on 'Ingraham Angle'

President Donald Trump discussed his promise for economic payouts for every adult U.S. citizen in an interview with Fox News, promising that record trade revenue will build long-term national wealth.

Speaking on "The Ingraham Angle" in an interview airing before he closes out the first-ever Republican midterm convention Thursday, Trump discussed his promise to offer a $5,000 "Trump dividend" if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate. The president explained why the payments hinge on Republicans retaining control of both chambers.

"Because – they can't – I'll tell you what, because the Democrats can't do it," Trump told host Laura Ingraham. "Because with them, it's negative growth. with us, it's so positive."

"We're taking in $21 trillion. No country has ever taken in anywhere near that," the president added. "That's four-five times more than the next. That's all because of that beautiful word you and love more than most others – tariffs."

The president said the dividend would have to be "spent in the U.S." Trump said tariff revenue would help fund payments to adult U.S. citizens if Republicans retained control of Congress.

Republicans hold a narrow House majority with 218 seats to Democrats’ 214, with one independent and two vacancies.

CBC TELLS JOURNALISTS NOT TO CALL 9/11 ‘TERRORIST ATTACKS’ IN INTERNAL GUIDANCE

"To me, that's not exactly what we need to do. We need to make sure that the kids have learned a lesson here. And that's not going to happen if we try to shave the facts to the point where it's hard to figure out what we're talking about."

A digital content analysis reveals that about half of the 1,740-word document is devoted to tips for creating "safe spaces for Muslim and Middle Eastern students," about 15% spells out specific 9/11 instruction and the rest of the document tip-toes around managing "emotional responses" to the lesson.

The guide by the school district, which sits only a few miles from the Pentagon and several military bases, mentions military families only three times and first responders only once, saying at one point, "Many families of military personnel and first responders experienced loss and hardship."

Meanwhile, it has 30 references to Islam, "Muslim families," "Muslim students," "anti-Muslim racism," "anti-Middle Eastern" rhetoric, "Islamophobic rhetoric" and "Middle Eastern students" and families. It includes a bulleted list of "critical considerations" to challenge anti-Muslim bias.

The curriculum guidance speaks to a wider tension about how the 9/11 attacks are described by influential figures from teachers, journalists and politicians to social media influencers as a network of powerful Muslim organizations have built educational programs over the past 25 years downplaying discussions about the extremist interpretations of Islam that motivated al Qaeda and the 19 hijackers involved in the 9/11 attacks.

On Thursday, New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch called for "moral clarity" about what happened on 9/11, saying in a speech, "The men who attacked this city were terrorists. The men and women who ran into the towers to save innocent lives were heroes.

"Twenty-five years cannot be allowed to blur that distinction, and shame on those who do."

Last month, after a major public backlash, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reversed earlier guidance that instructed journalists to avoid calling 9/11 a "terrorist attack."

In a statement provided to Fox News Digital, Fairfax County Public Schools said the school community has a "deeply personal connection to September 11 because of our proximity to the Pentagon and the many military-connected families we serve.

"On the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, we remember the nearly 3,000 people who were killed, including 184 at the Pentagon. We remember the victims, their families, the survivors, and everyone whose lives were forever changed. We honor the first responders whose courage and sacrifice continue to inspire us," the school district said.

"FCPS remains committed to creating an inclusive environment in our schools where all students feel welcome and respected as we strive to provide a world-class education and workplace."

Crenshaw saw the effects on military and civilian families impacted by the attack. On the fateful morning, Crenshaw was stationed on the Pentagon’s E Ring. He watched the TV footage of two airplanes crashing into the World Trade Center.

"I thought, 'This is not a good thing,'" Crenshaw recalled.

He then continued with a scheduled appointment, but as it began, the Pentagon was struck.

"Just about the time they sat down, and we started the interview, there was tremendous noise," Crenshaw said. "Bang! The entire building shook, and we knew right away that something bad had happened."

Crenshaw, who served in the Navy from 1974 to 2007, was on the fourth floor of the Pentagon on the same side of the building hit by the plane. His work area did not immediately collapse, although he said it was later destroyed by fire.

He looked outside and saw smoke billowing from the area where the airplane had hit. He also remembered seeing a chief petty officer crying as windows shattered and glass scattered across the floor.

The reality of the attack soon became clear to Crenshaw and the rest of the country. Al Qaeda, an extremist terrorist organization led by Usama bin Laden, had carried out a coordinated assault. The group used an extremist interpretation of Islam to justify the attack, portraying it as retaliation for the presence of U.S. forces overseas and American foreign policy. Bin Laden associate Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who took credit for planning the attack, awaits a trial in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

Crenshaw said students should understand that 9/11 was not simply "a coordinated terrorist attack on the United States," as the FCPS script describes it, but a strategic act of war.

"What we saw in 9/11 was a religious extremist group, al Qaeda, who did not tolerate what the United States was doing around the world and decided to react violently," Crenshaw said.

Teachers should be prepared to discuss the Islamist extremism behind the attack without collectively blaming all Muslims, he said, noting that he agreed it is important to make sure Muslim students aren't shamed.

"They are a branch of Islam, but they certainly do not espouse any of the values that we know of Islam worldwide," said Crenshaw. "And, therefore, they really shouldn't be considered to be part of that mainstream religion."

The guide includes a section titled "Responding to Racism, Hate, and Bias against Muslims and Middle Eastern People," telling teachers that Muslim students experience "the worst anti-Muslim racism" during Sept. 11 lessons.

FCPS instructs teachers the anniversary "may intensify anti-Muslim and anti-Middle Eastern rhetoric." They are told that speaking out against anti-Muslim bias is part of their "sacred role as teachers."

The guide also says that if educators hear students or colleagues using "Islamophobic rhetoric," "it is up to you to disrupt."

Under a list of "Do" and "Don’t" instructions, FCPS explicitly tells teachers don't "associate the 9/11 attacks with Islam or Muslims" and don't "center the extremists or the acts of the extremists."

The guide says the commemoration should focus on "those whose lives were lost and those who sacrificed to help others – not those who attacked the United States."

The guide says teachers should not focus a commemorative lesson on "an examination of Islam." It argues that doing so could send the "harmful message" that "Islam, or all Muslims, are responsible for these terrorist attacks."

Crenshaw said not explaining the ideology of the hijackers and how al Qaeda interpreted Islam to justify the attacks means the guide fails to deliver "a sense of urgency or the evilness of what actually happened."

Iran-backed terror group’s latest territorial grab threatens second global shipping chokepoint

Iran-backed Houthi forces seized Yemen’s strategic port city of Mocha on Thursday and pushed toward positions overlooking the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, opening a potentially dangerous new front for global trade as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains severely constrained.

The advance threatens the southern gateway to the Red Sea just as Saudi Arabia has increasingly relied on that route to bypass Hormuz — putting pressure on critical shipping lanes on both sides of the Arabian Peninsula and raising the risk of further disruptions to oil and commercial traffic through a key global trade choke point.

"Now you have Iran on one side of the Arabian Peninsula controlling Hormuz, and now the Houthis controlling Bab el-Mandeb on the other side of the peninsula," Hisham Al-Omeisy, senior Yemen advisor at the European Institute of Peace, told Fox News Digital. "Which basically is going to drive prices — oil prices, goods and everything else — up exponentially."

On background, a senior administration official told Fox News Digital: "The United States is focused on protecting our core national security interests — such as ensuring freedom of navigation in the Red Sea — while empowering our regional partners to take the lead in managing and resolving regional security challenges. We are in continuous dialogue with Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Yemen Government regarding regional stability."

Yemeni government sources said Thursay the Houthis captured Mocha and reached the Hanish Islands, while Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces withdrew south toward Dhubab, which sits directly on the Bab el-Mandeb opposite the strategic island of Perim. Control of Dhubab and Perim would be critical to gaining a stronger hold over the strait, Yemeni government sources told Reuters on Sept. 10.

Bab el-Mandeb is only about 18 miles wide at its narrowest point and connects the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden with the Red Sea and, farther north, the Suez Canal. It is a major artery for goods moving between Asia and Europe as well as energy shipments.

Its importance has grown dramatically during the Iran conflict.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported Sept. 9 that crude oil and petroleum liquids moving through Bab el-Mandeb averaged 8.1 million barrels per day in the second quarter of 2026, up from 5.4 million barrels per day in the final quarter of 2025. At the same time, flows through Hormuz plunged from 21.6 million barrels per day to just 4.9 million. The EIA attributed the increase at Bab el-Mandeb in part to Saudi Arabia rerouting crude through its East-West pipeline to the Red Sea port of Yanbu to avoid Hormuz.

Al-Omeisy said the danger extends beyond the Houthis’ geographical gains. He said retreating government forces left behind military materiel that could strengthen Houthi forces on other fronts.

"People are focused on taking Mocha and those outposts on the Red Sea," Al-Omeisy said. "But the military side is terrible, particularly the equipment, the munitions, the vehicles, the drones that were at those military camps, which they can now, in turn, use against the government forces elsewhere."

Reuters separately reported Thursday that Iranian arms and direct guidance from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards helped the Houthi advance, citing Yemeni government, Iranian and regional sources. Two Iranian sources told Reuters that Tehran had instructed the Houthis to intensify attacks on Saudi Arabia and promised additional funding, weapons and senior officers. Iran has publicly denied directing Houthi operations.

The seizure comes amid what conflict-monitoring organization ACLED described Sept. 9 as the most serious escalation between the Houthis and the Saudi-backed camp since hostilities resumed in mid-July.

ACLED recorded at least 276 fatalities between Sept. 3 and 7 as clashes spread across al-Dali, al-Bayda, Marib, Shabwa, al-Jawf, al-Hudayda and Taizz, according to an analysis published Sept. 9.

Sherwan Hindreen Ali, ACLED’s Middle East research manager, said fighting along the Red Sea coast had become particularly intense as both sides sought control over territory with direct strategic importance to Bab el-Mandeb.

"Fighting will remain focused on the fronts of the Red Sea coast in al-Hudaydah and Taizz, where both the Houthis and the Saudi Arabia/IRG have a vested interest in claiming the whole territory to deprive the other side of effective control of the strait of Bab el-Mandab," Ali said in an analysis.

Saudi Arabia itself has also become more deeply involved.

Ali said Saudi forces launched at least 15 strikes against the Houthis between Sept. 3 and 7, mostly around Taizz, marking the highest number of Saudi strikes since Riyadh resumed military engagement against the Houthis in July.

The Houthis responded Sept. 8 with what Ali described as their largest wave of direct attacks on Saudi territory since March 2022, launching dozens of drones and ballistic missiles toward Abha, Jizan, Najran and Khamis Mushait. Ali said the attacks injured 73 people.

The widening fighting is now posing an early test for a new joint defense agreement between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey.

Al-Omeisy said the international response allowed the Houthis to exploit divisions among their opponents.

"The Houthis are also good in exploiting divisions and delays, they move rapidly on the ground to force a status quo while the international community debates merits, responsibilities and costs of an intervention."

The escalation also raises questions about Saudi Arabia’s newly signed defense agreement with Pakistan and Turkey.

IRAN-BACKED HOUTHI THREAT IN RED SEA COULD LEAD TO MAJOR US POLICY SHIFT, ANALYSTS SAY

The agreement, signed last month in Mecca, states that an armed attack against one member will be considered an attack against all three, Reuters reported Sept. 10. But after Houthi drones and ballistic missiles struck Saudi cities and energy infrastructure this week, Pakistan said Thursday that no military response under the pact was currently being discussed.

"There is no such thing under discussion right now," Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan said, according to Reuters. "When time comes [we] will act under the agreement."

The Houthis, meanwhile, have said international navigation through the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb remains safe, while maintaining that Saudi vessels are subject to their previously announced blockade, Reuters reported Thursday.

Al-Omeisy warned that reversing the Houthis’ latest territorial gains could become increasingly difficult.

"The Houthis are really good at capturing a position, they entrench really well," he said. "They send these massive reinforcements, and then it’s going to be extremely difficult to push them out of those areas."

Oil markets were already responding to the widening regional threat Thursday. Brent crude jumped more than 5% to $106.60 a barrel by late Thursday morning, while U.S. crude climbed above $100 for the first time since May, according to Reuters.

YouTube now offers a $64.99-per-month Sports Plan that includes local channels, ESPN, TNT, TBS, FS1, Big Ten Network, SEC Network and more. New users can subscribe for $49.99 per month during their first six months.

Fans can also subscribe to each service individually.

They can bundle Fox One and ESPN Unlimited for $39.99 per month, providing access to games on Fox, ESPN and ABC. Paramount+ costs an additional $8.99 per month for CBS games, while Peacock costs $12.99 per month for the games on NBC.

That option costs roughly the same as the YouTube TV Sports Plan. Both routes would still require separate Netflix and Amazon Prime subscriptions.

In total, fans are looking at spending at least $450 to $500 to watch all the nationally televised games this season.

Fans who seek games that are not nationally televised in their area will need NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube. The package costs $336 for the year, or $240 for new subscribers.

That is the context behind the memes suggesting it will cost roughly $800 to watch the NFL this season.

NFL teams have already priced some working-class families out of attending games through surging ticket prices. Now, streaming those same games from home has become prohibitively expensive.

While rising costs have not yet diminished the NFL’s popularity, that does not mean they will not eventually.

The NFL product is hardly operating at peak efficiency. The addition of more windows and days of the week, including Wednesday and Friday games, has further diluted the product.

It has also contributed to shorter rest periods, sloppy play, and, potentially, more injuries.

Trump administration proposes ending 60-day grace period after job loss for H-1B, other visa holders

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are preparing to propose a rule that would eliminate an existing grace period for visa holders who can't find a job, according to an unpublished document posted to the Federal Register.

Under current immigration laws, holders of certain visas, particularly H-1B visas, which are non-immigration visas that allow employers to sponsor skilled workers with Bachelor's degrees or higher, get a 60-day grace period to find a new job if they lose the employment tied to their visa.

The new rule proposal would eliminate that grace period, according to the document.

"This proposal restores a direct relationship between an alien’s nonimmigrant status and the specific employment or activity that formed the basis of his or her admission or grant of status in the United States and reduces administrative burden," the document reads.

A noncitizen would have to immediately leave the U.S. if no longer working for an employer linked to a visa status if the rule were to be implemented.

US STATE DEPARTMENT HAS YANKED MORE THAN 175K VISAS UNDER TRUMP ADMINISTRATION SO FAR

"DHS believes that restoring the expectation that aliens depart the United States upon cessation of the employment or activity upon which the alien’s status was based, would better promote program integrity and be more consistent with statutory purpose," the rule proposal reads.

The agency also claimed that eliminating the grace period would greatly reduce administrative burden "as the process of determining when the up to 60-day grace period may apply, reviewing the information submitted, and determining whether to shorten or eliminate the grace period may be time consuming and complex for the agency and confusing or unpredictable for the petitioner, alien and the alien’s dependents."

AMERICA’S BROKEN LEGAL IMMIGRATION SYSTEM IS REPLACING US WORKERS BY DESIGN

Before 2017, the document states, there was no 60-day grace period. But in 2016, DHS established the grace period in a rule that came into effec Jan. 17, 2017, three days before President Donald Trump first took office.

DHS also wrote that the rule's elimination would favor U.S. workers because employers who previously filled jobs with foreign workers would have less foreign-born labor to choose from.

"DHS assumes that almost all these entities would offer the same jobs to equally qualified U.S. workers, go through the I-129 petition process to sponsor nonimmigrant workers, or reassign the work to other current employees. DHS acknowledges that some of these petitioners may incur a temporary loss of productivity due to labor turnover," the rule proposal reads.

The unpublished rule is scheduled to publish Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, according to the Federal Register. It will then be subject to a two-month period of public comment before becoming law.

A scammer doesn't need to hack your homeowners association. They may only need to look at information your community already makes available.

Meeting minutes, membership records and other association documents can contain details about the people who live in a community. Depending on the HOA and state law, some records may be available to association members while others could appear on an association website or another online system.

You probably didn't put the information there yourself. You may have no idea how much someone can learn about you. Yet a name tied to an address or community can give a scammer useful details for making a call or message sound legitimate.

What your HOA puts online could reveal more about you than you realize. Here's what to look for and what you can do about it.

How HOA records can expose your personal information

HOA records can contain details about homeowners, association business and community disputes. What members can access and what an association can publish depends heavily on state law.

What HOA meeting minutes can reveal

HOA meeting minutes and other association records can reveal more than homeowners expect. How much information appears depends on the association and state law. Some states give HOA members broad rights to inspect association records. Sensitive disciplinary, collection and payment issues can receive additional privacy protections.

California provides a useful example. State law treats board meeting minutes as association records available for member inspection but excludes minutes and other information from executive sessions. Those closed sessions can cover matters such as member discipline, certain payment issues and other sensitive association business.

California law also allows an association to withhold or redact information when releasing it could reasonably lead to identity theft or fraud or compromise a member's privacy. The privacy concern grows when an association includes unnecessary personal details in records or makes information available more broadly than required.

How HOA membership lists can expose contact details

HOA membership lists can contain information that scammers and data brokers would find useful. In California, state law defines the membership list as including a homeowner's name, property address, mailing address and email address as collected by the association. Members can request access to association records under state law.

Homeowners also have an important privacy option. California law allows members to opt out of sharing their name, property address, mailing address and email address through the membership list by notifying the association in writing. The law also restricts association records from being sold, used for commercial purposes or used for purposes unrelated to a member's interests as a member.

Rules differ from state to state, so check the laws where you live and ask your HOA exactly what information it collects, who can access it and whether you can opt out. The concern extends beyond the HOA itself. Once personal information appears publicly online, it can be indexed or copied and combined with information already collected from public records and other sources. Data brokers and people-search sites build profiles using many of those sources.

How HOA information can make scams more convincing

Personal information gives scammers context they can use to make a fraudulent message feel legitimate. The Justice Department has already prosecuted companies that supplied consumer information to fraud operations.

Epsilon Data Management, one of the largest marketing companies in the country, agreed to pay $150 million after federal prosecutors said it sold consumer data to operators running fraudulent mass-mailing schemes involving fake sweepstakes and astrology solicitations. The government said many victims were elderly and vulnerable. A related company, Macromark, pleaded guilty after lists it provided to fraudulent clients resulted in at least $9.5 million in victim losses.

Those cases involved marketing databases rather than HOA records. Still, they demonstrate why personal details can become valuable to criminals. Names and addresses helped fraudsters identify and target potential victims.

HOA information can give scammers another source of context. A scammer who learns your name, street address and community can weave those details into a phone call, text or email. A message claiming to involve an assessment or another issue connected to your property can sound far more believable when the person contacting you already knows where you live.

Why 55+ communities deserve extra caution

Older adults remain especially attractive targets for financial scammers. The FBI says criminals may target older Americans because many have accumulated significant savings. Older victims can also be more likely to engage with unsolicited phone calls, texts or emails.

In 2025, Americans over 60 reported more than $7.7 billion in internet-enabled fraud losses. The FBI received more than 201,000 complaints from people in that age group, which reported the highest total losses of any age group.

Those numbers don't mean everyone living in a retirement or 55+ community will encounter fraud. They do show why reducing unnecessary personal information online deserves attention. The fewer details scammers can easily connect to you, the harder you make their job.

How to reduce your HOA privacy exposure

You may have more control over your HOA information than you realize, but your options depend on where you live and how your association handles its records.

1) Search for your HOA information online

Start by seeing what someone outside your community can find. Search your HOA's name along with terms such as "minutes," "directory," "membership list" or your own name. Check whether documents appear directly in search results without requiring a resident login. Pay particular attention to documents that connect your name with your address or other personal information.

2) Ask what your HOA makes public

Contact your board or management company and ask which records anyone on the internet can access. Find out which documents require a resident login and whether search engines can index anything posted on the association's website. If a document contains personal information that has no reason to appear publicly, ask whether the association can remove it, redact the information or restrict access.

3) Check whether you can opt out

Privacy rights vary by state, so find out what options apply where you live. California homeowners, for example, can opt out of sharing certain information through the HOA membership list. Other states may have different rules covering association directories and member records. Ask your HOA or management company how its opt-out process works and whether you can limit the contact information available to other members.

4) Remove your information from data broker sites

Even if your HOA removes information from a public page, your name, address and other details may already appear elsewhere online. People-search sites and data brokers gather personal information from public records, websites and other sources, then combine those details into profiles.

Start by searching for your name, phone number, email address and home address on major people-search sites. If you find a profile, look for the site's opt-out or removal process and submit a request to have your information deleted.

You can also use a data removal service to automate some of this work. These services send removal requests to data brokers on your behalf and may continue monitoring for information that reappears later.

Whichever route you choose, check back periodically. Personal information can resurface as data brokers refresh their databases or pull from new sources.

Laws vary by state, but there is no reason to make a scammer's research easier than it already is. And remember, removing something from an HOA website may only solve part of the problem. Once personal information spreads to people-search sites and data brokers, cutting down those profiles can help put some distance between you and anyone trying to build a convincing story around your life.

Lindsay Clancy's attorney asks judge to acquit her outright, ending case and barring a retrial

Lindsay Clancy's attorney is asking a judge to acquit her after a mistrial was declared on Friday, arguing the trial evidence was legally insufficient to prove she was criminally responsible for killing her children.

Clancy, 36, faced three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the slayings of her children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan — who were discovered strangled at the family's home in January 2023. Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial Friday after jurors could not agree on a unanimous verdict, with the panel split 11-1.

"The argument by Mr. Reddington is not based on the holdout juror — it is that the evidence was insufficient to support a finding that the defendant, Ms. Clancy, was criminally responsible," says retired Massachusetts Judge Jack Lu, who breaks down the filing below.

The motion, filed by defense attorney Kevin Reddington on Thursday, asked Sullivan to enter a finding of not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility on each charge. He wants the motion to be heard at a hearing on Sept. 29.

"A hung jury is not a verdict; jeopardy does not terminate on a hung jury, and a mistrial ordinarily permits retrial," Reddington conceded in the filing.

However, he argued that 11 of the 12 jurors "applied the reasonable doubt standard" and concluded that the prosecutors hadn't proven Clancy was criminally responsible. The holdout, the filing suggests and other jurors have alleged, allegedly ignored his own doubts and insisted on a guilty verdict.

In particular, Reddington targeted the prosecution's witnesses.

"Taken at their strongest, these show that Ms. Clancy could perform familiar tasks and act in sequence," he wrote of the Commonwealth's rebuttal experts. "They do not show that she could appreciated wrongfulness or conform her donut to the law. That is the element. Nothing else counts."

Prosecutors short-circuited their own case when the Commonwealth's forensic experts agreed that Clancy had a serious mental illness on the day she strangled her kids, Reddington argued.

"The treating clinicians who saw Ms. Clancy in the weeks before January 24 testified that she presented with postpartum depression and anxiety and that they did not observe psychosis; that testimony bears on which illness she had, not on whether she had one, and depression and anxiety of the severity that led to psychiatric admission are themselves a mental disease or defect," Reddington wrote. "No rational jury could find beyond a reasonable doubt that she had no mental disease or defect when the Commonwealth's own proof established that she did."

Reddington cited Rule 25 under the Massachusetts Rules of Criminal Procedure, which Lu said governs motions like the one filed Thursday.

"This translates to the defendant moving for a court-ordered not guilty claiming that the defendant is entitled to a not guilty as a matter of law," he told Fox News Digital. "In this case it is based on the claim that the prosecution witnesses were insufficient to prove that the defendant was criminally responsible."

Such filings are routine, he said, but seldom prevail. In his own time on the bench, he said he could not remember granting one.

"I cannot remember ever seeing one of these motions acted on," Lu said. "Mr. Reddington is asking to wipe the entire case out and that is a big ask."

What the other jurors are saying:

Nick Dargie, 25, told ABC News that the lone holdout juror at one point attempted to mimic the way Clancy killed her three kids with an exercise band and water bottle.

"He took the exercise band out of the bag, grabbed an empty water bottle and tied the band around the water bottle and pulled it," Dargie said. "I was just so shocked that he did that."

"I was shocked, it didn‘t make any sense to me. Like, we‘re not in here to play detective or it‘s not a game of Clue. like, this is serious. I asked him why," he added.

Dargie said the holdout juror refused to explain how witness testimony helped prove his stance.

"There was several times I would ask him to show us evidence or, you know, describe a witness testimony that helped to prove what he was saying, and ... he couldn't," Dargie said. "There wasn't a single piece of evidence or witness testimony that he used to prove why he was thinking the way he was, which is why we ultimately sent in that note."

He was referring to the note sent by the jury foreperson, who reported that one juror was refusing to follow the court's instructions on reasonable doubt.

After several jurors came forward about what went on in the deliberation room, Clancy's defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, told "CBS Mornings" Wednesday that he would be filing a new motion to dismiss based on double jeopardy.

"I would defend that person's right to be a holdout for a month," Reddington said. "That's what the system is based on, but when the forelady indicated clearly and unequivocally in the jury question that this person had doubt, reasonable doubt as we know now, and just refused to listen to the judge's instruction on the law, that's when I was upset."

While Plymouth County District Attorney Timmothy Cruz hasn't indicated what he will do with Lindsay Clancy's case after the mistrial, Sullivan set a status hearing for Sept. 29.
