Husband stands by wife accused of killing son, plotting to poison him after Clancy trial obsession: attorney

The husband of an Illinois mother accused of strangling their 2-year-old son during a "psychotic episode" is standing by her, even as prosecutors say she also plotted to poison him amid an fixation with the Lindsay Clancy trial, according to her attorney.

Corie Walsh, 38, told officers that she killed her 2-year-old son Barrett on Sept. 1 because she believed he was the "devil" and "anti-Christ," according to documents obtained by Fox News Digital. He was found hanging in the basement from a rafter, officials said.

A neighbor found the toddler and administered CPR while calling 911, with court documents noting he was "cold and had no pulse." The 2-year-old was pronounced dead later that day at New Lenox Hospital. Barrett's cause of death was determined to be "asphyxia due to ligature compression of the neck." Walsh was treated at a local hospital for self-inflicted wounds to her wrists and thighs.

Defense attorneys for Walsh said her husband and mother "have unwavering love and support" for her.

Walsh's husband and mother weren't at her detention hearing on Sept. 8 because that was the same day as Barrett's funeral.

Andrea Lyon, a defense attorney for Walsh who previously served on Casey Anthony's defense team, told Fox News Digital in a statement that Walsh's actions were driven by mental illness.

"This is a tragedy for the Walsh family, all of whom are mourning the loss of this child," Lyon said. "It is also a tragedy in that Corie herself was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time this happened."

Lyon acknowledged that Walsh was "psychotic" but denied that her client's interest in the Clancy case had any connection to the alleged killing.

"They are not correlated at all. It's just accidental," Lyon said, describing as "baseless and cruel" any suggestion that Walsh's actions constituted a copycat crime.

Court documents indicate that Walsh had "recently become very invested" in the murder trial for Clancy, who was accused of murdering her three children. Clancy acknowledged she killed her children, but argued she was experiencing postpartum psychosis.

"Cases like this are, with children involved, because of the publicity and just the pain it causes the community are what we call heaters. There's a lot of media focus on them. Saudi Arabia facing 'biggest threat' ever to oil production as Iran-proxy Houthis launch attacks, expert says

Saudi Arabia is currently facing "the biggest threat" ever to its production of oil as the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen are launching cross-border attacks and seizing territory near the Red Sea’s Bab el-Mandeb Strait, an expert told Fox News Digital.

Hussain Abdul-Hussain, a research fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said Thursday that the situation is escalating in the Middle East as Iran "likely instigated the Houthis to force a blockade on Saudi Arabia."

"I think this situation is really precarious for the Saudis. This is the biggest threat to their production of oil since their kingdom was founded in 1932. And this is almost existential," he said.

"We see that the Saudis are trying to shop for some force to fight their war for them. And I think along the lines, they also called President Trump. It doesn't look to me that Washington is going to get involved in this one," he added. "We'll probably offer them advice and tell support, but I don't think we, the United States, will get involved with this war over Bab el-Mandeb."

Saudi Arabia was forced to temporarily close its East-West oil pipeline last week following a drone attack launched from Iraq, which Trump said he believes Iran was behind. Then on Tuesday, Saudi Arabia destroyed a Houthi drone that attempted to enter the airspace near Mecca, among other recent provocations.

"We know that the United States imposes a blockade on Iran, so Iran is unable to export any of its oil, licitly or illicitly. What the Iranians are trying to do is that they're trying to telegraph to the other oil exporters in the region that either we export, all of us export oil, or none of us will export oil," Abdul-Hussain told Fox News Digital. "This is why you see Iran shutting down the Strait of Hormuz. This forced Saudi Arabia to switch its oil production from east to west, from Hormuz to the other side to the Red Sea. Tankers started picking up oil at the port of Yanbu in Saudi Arabia on the Red Sea and sailing south through the Bab al-Mandeb all the way to the Asian markets.

"Iran didn't like this because clearly all or none didn't work," he said. "So they likely instigated the Houthis to force a blockade on Saudi Arabia."

Fox News Digital, citing a source familiar with the matter, reported on Friday that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged Trump to take military action against the Houthis.

Trump then said the next day during a visit to Ireland that "the Houthis called us and they don’t want to fight with us."

"They let us know, they don’t want to fight with us...they don’t want us to go after them," Trump added. "But they have called and they have talked to us, and they don’t want us to, they would much prefer not having us involved."

Abdul-Hussain told Fox News Digital that "Our expectation as Washington is that the Saudis, with all these arms that we've sold them over the past few decades, with all the military support and advice we give them, that they should be able to protect their own tankers and ships in this waterway and keep it open.

"The Houthis announced that they're only going after Saudi ships and Saudi navigation and they made it clear that they are not going after international shipping, whether [they] are U.S. ships or European ships," he continued. "So this forces a choice on us. Do we go to war with the Houthis out of nowhere, even though they're not willing to, or at least they didn't wage war on our ships and our navigations through Bab el-Mandeb?"

"Or we ask the Saudis to handle this, you know, after all the Houthis are not really a state, they're a non-state actor and Saudi Arabia should be able to deal with them," Abdul-Hussain added. "Unfortunately, the Saudis don't seem to have been able to deal with the Houthis."

A senior administration official told Fox News Digital on Thursday that the U.S. remains focused on protecting core national security interests such as the freedom of navigation in the Red Sea while simultaneously empowering allies in the region to manage and resolve security challenges.

The Trump administration also remains in continuous dialogue with Saudi Arabia and Yemen over regional stability , the official added.

Nearly 3 in 4 Americans are battling the same exhausting health problem, CDC reveals

Exhaustion has become the default state for a vast majority of Americans.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics shows that more than seven in 10 U.S. adults experience fatigue over any given three-month period — a drain that public health officials say is taking a heavy toll on work and daily life.

The report, based on the 2024 National Health Interview Survey of roughly 27,000 adults, revealed that exhaustion is one of the most common health complaints nationwide.

COMMON BEDROOM MISTAKE COULD BE QUIETLY TAKING A TOLL ON YOUR HEALTH, EXPERTS SAY

The CDC defines fatigue as a state of physical or mental exhaustion that does not improve with rest, distinguishing it from simple sleepiness.

Overall, 71.5% of respondents reported feeling fatigued on at least some days, with 16.6% reporting "frequent fatigue" — defined as feeling exhausted most days or every day.

"Fatigue can be caused by numerous issues," Dr. Earnest Lee Murray, a board-certified neurologist at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, Tennessee, told Fox News Digital.

While underlying hormonal, cardiac or neurological conditions can play a role, "a vast majority of fatigue people experience is probably related to poor sleep quality as well as psychosocial stress, which a lot of times go hand-in-hand."

Frequent fatigue is significantly more common among women (20%) than men (13%).

The data also shows that younger adults ages 18 to 34 reported the highest rates of frequent exhaustion at 19.5%, while adults 65 and older reported the lowest rate at 12.9%.

Fatigue also increases among lower-income households, residents in rural areas and those living in the South and Midwest.

About 50.9% of adults with frequent fatigue reported having difficulties in three or more functional areas, including mood, mobility and memory. More than one-third of frequently fatigued adults said exhaustion limits their ability to work, while 29% reported cutting back on social activities.

"Quality of sleep is very important for restoration of both the mental and physical body," Murray said. "The fatigue that results from poor quality of sleep contributes to slower thought processing, decreased concentration, and a less productive and happy workforce."

Although the report doesn't identify specific causes, experts say workplace culture and constant digital connectivity may contribute to fatigue.

"The advancements of instant communication technologies certainly have benefits; however, we are not able to disconnect from our work life any longer," Murray said.

"There are now expectation issues from work that can be dealt with quickly over our phone, even late at night. Also, social media and constant scrolling have certainly contributed to a reduced quality of sleep."

Experts say constant interruptions and digital multitasking can leave people feeling mentally drained. Research has found that frequently switching between emails, chat messages and other work tasks forces the brain to repeatedly refocus, contributing to mental fatigue.

To combat the growing exhaustion, Murray stressed the need for setting boundaries and seeking medical evaluation as needed.

"It is important to disconnect from work and our electronic devices in the hours leading up to sleep," he advised. "Also, if fatigue is becoming a problem, it is important to seek medical attention to ensure there's no underlying medical reason contributing to the fatigue."

Falcons goofy quarterback drill sparks hilarious reactions from fans on social media

Just when you thought you'd seen it all when it comes to practice drills on a football field, the Atlanta Falcons decide to put their quarterbacks through a warm-up exercise that one would assume is reserved for ballerinas or cartoon characters.

The Falcons welcome the Carolina Panthers to town on Sunday for their home opener, and during practice on Wednesday, the squad's trio of quarterbacks showed off the spring in their steps. Literally.

In the video shared across social media, Michael Penix Jr., Cooper Rush, and Jack Strand each take a snap and proceed to take a dropback. The dropbacks, however, aren't exactly typical; instead, the signal callers hop backwards with elongated strides.

Penix and Strand appeared to have bought into the drill a bit more than Rush, as they are seen hopping around like rabbits. Rush, who was QB1 for the Falcons' in their season-opening loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, was going through the motions, and you can't really blame him for doing so.

AI hysteria has a Y2K problem — and the stakes this time could be far higher

Washington’s growing alarm over artificial intelligence is beginning to echo Y2K, experts say, when dire warnings of technological catastrophe prompted a massive scramble to avert failures that ultimately proved far less severe than feared.

"You could draw all sorts of scary scenarios with Y2K as well. The financial system was just going to collapse because people had not written their programs for the year 2000. I had been writing programs in the 1980s for the government, so I'm well aware of the program," Junk Science publisher and founder Steven Milloy told Fox News Digital.

"But of course, the tech industry knew about the problem, and to the extent that was a real problem, took action to fix it. The same can happen with AI," Milloy added.

Y2K was a computer bug that raised fears systems could fail when the calendar changed from 1999 to 2000. The U.S. spent an estimated $100 billion, $200 billion adjusted for today's inflation, in preparing for the problem, according to a 2000 Senate report.

When the new millennium arrived, there were few major disruptions.

President Donald Trump has made rapid AI development and the data centers needed to power it a priority, while the administration promotes the technology’s potential economic benefits and Democrats cry foul before midterm elections.

"Democrats are capitalizing on the fears of Americans that angst over AI," Heritage Foundation technology analyst Annie Chestnut Tutor told Fox News Digital.

Democrats are increasingly calling for government guardrails on AI, citing potential threats ranging from job losses and inequality to risks to democracy and humanity. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, for instance, wrote in April that AI "kills jobs, equality, connection, democracy and maybe the human race."

But the apocalyptic warnings are not coming only from Washington.

Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon quit the company over concerns about the race toward self-improving AI, warning that its developers are "gambling with our lives" and that such systems could potentially "kill us all by the end of the decade."

Y2K sparked similar fears, as warnings spread of potential power-grid failures, disruptions to air travel and air-traffic control, and even predictions that planes could fall from the sky.

The Trump administration has backed targeted safeguards, including AI-powered cyber defenses for critical infrastructure, criminal enforcement against AI-enabled hacking and proposed measures to limit AI-driven child exploitation.

Tutor offered a nuanced Y2K comparison, arguing that the episode showed how technological risks can be addressed before they become potentially catastrophic.

"The reason now, like, we all laugh about Y2K is because actually software engineers and, like, financial analysts, they've worked really hard to ensure that the catastrophic incidents [didn’t] happen," Tutor said.

"I think the same thing could happen with AI," she added. "If AI is built right, it can be more beneficial to Americans than the doomsday scenario."

Milloy said the Y2K comparison also fits a pattern he sees with climate change, with dire warnings of an existential threat followed by calls for sweeping government intervention.

Climate warnings have likewise been framed in apocalyptic terms, including predictions that entire nations could be wiped out by global warming, Arctic summer ice could disappear within years and Glacier National Park’s glaciers would vanish by 2020.

"There are a lot of parallels between climate hysteria and AI hysteria," Milloy said. "Climate was existential. It was going to destroy the planet, and by implication, humanity. As we learned last week, AI is going to destroy humanity also on a very short time frame."

Milloy argued that while lawmakers are crying foul, they have not established enough specific evidence of catastrophic AI scenarios to justify sweeping restrictions.

Trump has responded to AI warnings by calling them a "hoax," reviving the language he has used for years to dismiss climate change concerns.

"Give me a real-life practical scenario of how this can happen," he said. "And then if you know what the scenario is, then you can stop it."

Milloy warned that overly broad regulation could carry its own cost by slowing technological advances before their benefits are fully understood.

"The opportunity costs are potentially huge," Milloy said, pointing to potential AI-assisted advances in medicine and productivity while acknowledging that their ultimate scale remains unknown.

Scandal rocks Utah campus as student who celebrated Charlie Kirk’s death sparks online firestorm

A college student photographed with a cake mocking Charlie Kirk's death is at the center of a campus controversy that has prompted the University of Utah to investigate two College Republicans for charges of misconduct after one posted the photo online.

On Sept. 10, 2026, the one-year anniversary of the conservative activist's public murder, a woman approached a group of College Republicans at an event on the school's campus and presented them with a cake. The words "Happy Kirkiversary" were written in red icing on the white cake.

Students Riley Beesley, the chairman of the school's College Republicans chapter, and Rylie Barnes, also a member of the group, took exception to the stunt on a campus less than an hour's drive from another college campus where Kirk was assassinated last year.

Barnes posted a photo of the cake to her X account, and it quickly went viral and led to an anonymous X user identifying the student as Sara Larsen.

The school's College Democrats responded by saying Republicans are "waging a campaign of hate" against them.

On Tuesday, the university sent emails to Beesley and Barnes requesting closed-door meetings Wednesday morning with its Student Rights and Responsibilities office.

"We received information that, if accurate, may go against this priority and the policy on Student Rights and Responsibilities, and I would like to meet and hear your perspective," says a copy of one of the emails, obtained by Fox News Digital. "The report is regarding an incident that happened on or about September 11, 2026 and allegedly involves you attempting to doxx another University of Utah student over a political issue."

The email was sent by the office's assistant director, Jose Morales Diaz.

"Doxxing" is the act of publicly revealing, usually online, the personal information of another person, typically with the intent of causing harm to that individual.

"We will talk about the information our office received, and you will have an opportunity to give your perspective of the incident if you wish. We will also talk about possible next steps, such as resolutions and educational or restorative measures if appropriate," the email said.

The emails also prohibited the students from recording the meetings. But shortly before the meetings were scheduled to take place, the university abruptly canceled them, according to Beesley.

Diaz did not respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

"We found it distasteful, vile, and disgusting. Parents, alumni, students and donors deserve to know about the radical political ideologies festering on college campuses in Utah," Beesley told Fox News Digital of the cake incident.

"Given today's political climate, mocking or expressing support such as this should be taken incredibly seriously and the public sphere has a right to know about the lack of morality being observed among young Democrats and those on the left."

He strongly condemned doxxing, and said his group had nothing to do with the release of Larsen's information. He also condemned political violence.

"We're observing patterns where those on the left find it comical to make threats, have normalized silencing opposing political viewpoints, and avoid accountability or consequences for glorifying murder," he said. "This must end."

The university told Fox News Digital it can't comment on student disciplinary action, citing federal law.

But Wednesday night, the school released a statement about the ongoing controversy, which has been going viral online for days and has become a national news story.

"In recent days, a dispute between political groups on the University of Utah campus has resulted in allegations of harassment, threats, and the inappropriate sharing or amplification of personal information. The University of Utah is reviewing these accusations consistent with established policies, due process and applicable law," the statement said.

"As we conduct this review, the university will continue to simultaneously protect freedom of expression and the safety of our students. Calls to harm someone, including electronic harassment and inappropriate sharing of information, are not protected by free speech," it continued.

The school also urged the College Democrats and College Republicans groups on campus to convene with leadership in an attempt to better understand one another.

It also condemned violence.

Beesley was subject to an alleged violent threat on campus earlier this year, when a person threatened to "Kirk" him.

"It was January 12, we were outside tabling and engaging in debates in a format similar to those organized by, let's say, Turning Point USA," Beesley told Fox News Digital at the time. "And soon after [he] declared to us, 'you should die,' followed by, 'I am going to Kirk you,' which you could only think that means I'm either using your imagination going to shoot you or kill you."

Dean Stewart, then 21, was arrested following the incident. Criminal proceedings against him are ongoing, Beesley said.

An X account with the name Sara Larsen made a post on Sept. 11, 2026, apologizing for the cake stunt. Fox News Digital could not independently verify whether the account owner is the student embroiled in the controversy.

"Upon reflection, it was wrong for me to celebrate, or perpetuate the celebration of, Charlie Kirk’s death. I apologize for doing so sincerely. Nobody should be murdered or persecuted for their speech," reads the tweet — the only post present on an account with 311 followers that was created in February 2017.

Former GOP whip, Arizona Sen Jon Kyl dead at 84

Former Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., is dead at the age of 84, his family announced Thursday.

Kyl was first sworn in to the Senate in 1995, retiring in 2013. He briefly returned to the Senate in 2018 after former Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., died.

Kyl announced he was stepping away from public life in December 2025 after receiving a diagnosis of a neurological disease that resulted in his development of dementia.

Before his election to the Senate, Kyl was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995.

Former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, who appointed Kyl to fill McCain's seat in 2018, paid his respects to the former senator in a Thursday post on X.

"Jon Kyl gave Arizona nearly three decades of principled, thoughtful leadership — and he gave me something just as valuable: his mentorship and friendship. I'll miss him deeply. Rest in peace, Senator Kyl," Ducey posted.

Former Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., who served in the Senate with Kyl, also paid homage to the late lawmaker.

"Arizona has lost a giant. Jon Kyl was one of the most diligent and effective public servants Arizona has ever had. I was honored to follow him in the U.S. Senate, where his example of seriousness, integrity and devotion to public service was known to all. Cheryl and I send our deepest condolences to Caryll and the entire Kyl family," Flake posted on X.

Flake also gave remarks to reporters at the Capitol on Thursday.

"I admired him from the get-go, when he was back in the house, and I was in Arizona. When I ran for office, he gave me the best advice I ever got. He said that, when you get back to Washington, make sure your family is aware of what you're doing, is involved in it. He said they will either resent it or revel in it. And that was the best advice I got, because we tried to follow that. And he was just… in addition to being an extremely effective public servant, he was a good man. And I think that, that shined through," Flake told reporters.

"And then also, in terms of his legal mind and his, you know, concern about the Supreme Court. And he was asked after he had left Congress to sherpa certain nominees through, and he was extremely effective in that because he had the respect of his colleagues."

Flake also revealed that he last spoke with Kyl just before the late Senator announced his dementia diagnosis

"December of last year he put out a statement, I had talked to him just before that. And, it was a wonderful conversation. He was very much aware of all that the state had gone through, and I made sure to tell him how appreciative all Arizonans are of what he did for the state and what he did for the country. And, he was so devoted to his wife, Carol, and his family, and the state of Arizona," Flake said.

Flake also commented on the unique situation that arose when Kyl was appointed to replace McCain.

"When Senator McCain passed away, there was an appointment and he served out that term for the last few months. So I got to serve with him in the Senate and also jokingly be the senior Senator to him, which I didn't deserve. But it was just a wonderful relationship throughout," Flake said.

LSU was embroiled in controversy before a single snap of the season was played when Kiffin attempted to add former Ole Miss players Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris to the roster.

Kiffin relied on ChatGPT to justify how adding pro players would be okay, attorney Tom Mars – a friend of the LSU head coach – revealed to the outlet.

Mars explained, "Usually, when I would express an opinion about what LSU was doing, Lane would reply with a screenshot from ChatGPT that supported LSU's position, which was almost always wrong. Lane ignored most of my unsolicited advice, but I don't think he'll be using ChatGPT anymore for legal advice."

"Eventually, I told him that a guy with a $91 million contract ought to have a top-notch lawyer on speed dial and not be using ChatGPT for legal advice," Mars further told the outlet.

Fraud mastermind behind multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme that victimized Travis Kelce is illegal immigrant

The mastermind behind the multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme that even victimized NFL star Travis Kelce is an illegal immigrant from India.

Thirty-eight-year-old Siddharth Jawahar was sentenced to 11 years in prison this week for running a $35 million investment wire fraud scheme. At his sentencing, Judge Zachary Bluestone said that through his investment company, Swiftarc Capital LLC, Jawahar "weaponized" investors' trust, resulting in "massive" losses for the victims.

Jawahar raised more than $35 million from investors between 2016 and 2023 and only invested roughly $10 million of that total. He spent the remainder funding personal luxuries, including private jet charters, upscale apartments in Austin and New York, high-end dining, shopping sprees at clothing stores and exclusive private club memberships. He has now been ordered to pay $31.35 million in restitution to his victims.

But that is not the end of Jawahar’s legal issues. He may also be subject to deportation. According to the Department of Justice and a court document reviewed by Fox News Digital, Jawahar is an illegal immigrant from India who has been living in the U.S. since 2005.

Further, the DOJ said that after his indictment on three counts of wire fraud and one count of investment-adviser fraud in 2023, Jawahar tried to obstruct justice by coaching a victim into giving a favorable statement to the FBI while lying about his immigration status and finances. He also tried to get his sister to remotely wipe his iPhone to hide evidence, the DOJ said.

Jawahar pleaded guilty to three counts of wire fraud in January 2026.

Among Jawahar’s victims was Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end who recently married pop superstar Taylor Swift, and several NBA players, including Gary Harris, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Mason Plumlee. The DOJ said Jawahar’s victims resided in Missouri and elsewhere.

Instead of managing a diversified portfolio for his investors, Jawahar allocated roughly 99% of client capital into a single stock, Philip Morris Pakistan. As that position tanked, Jawahar hid the losses, issued falsified statements and used funds from new investors to pay out earlier clients.

Jawahar also managed 17 additional entities that he utilized during his scheme.

Historic newspaper gives El-Sayed a savage rebuke for hiding his past while endorsing his opponent

A top newspaper in battleground Michigan is skewering left-wing Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed over past radical rhetoric as it endorses Republican rival former Rep. Mike Rogers in a crucial midterm showdown.

The race between El-Sayed and Rogers to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters is a must-win battle for the Democrats as they try to recapture the Senate majority from the GOP.

The Detroit News, which has the second-largest newspaper circulation in Michigan, charged in its endorsement of Rogers that El-Sayed "has worked so hard covering his tracks leading up to this Senate race that it's impossible to know who he really is or where he would stand in the Senate."

WHO'S UP AND WHO'S DOWN IN THE LATEST FOX NEWS MIDTERM POLLING

"He has deleted social media posts that reportedly called into question his attitude about America in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He's taken down roughly 100 YouTube videos that paint an unflattering picture of him and his cultural views," the conservative-leaning newspaper argued. "A candidate who feels the need to hide his past from voters is not someone who can be trusted to be the same person after Election Day as he was on the campaign trail."

As he runs for the Senate, El-Sayed has removed or archived thousands of past social media posts and older podcast/YouTube videos.

Some of those past comments include floating the idea of abandoning fireworks on July 4th, suggesting replacing the nation's Second Amendment with the "right to have health care," and one-time support for the "defund the police" movement.

El-Sayed, who was captain of his high school football team, also criticized football's ties to toxic masculinity and a "bro culture."

The Rogers campaign and other Republicans have blasted El-Sayed for many of his past controversial comments.

The El-Sayed campaign said this summer that some of the past comments were removed "to prevent any old posts from being taken out of context."

And last week, around the 9/11 25th anniversary, the El-Sayed campaign emphasized that "Abdul has always unequivocally condemned terrorism and the September 11 attacks."

Fox News Digital reached out to the El-Sayed campaign for additional comment on the Detroit News' criticisms, but didn't receive a response at the time this story was published.

The newspaper praised Rogers, calling him "the prototype of a United States Senator."

"He spent 14 years in the House of Representatives, rising to chair of the vital Intelligence Committee. The 63-year-old Republican left Congress at the end of 2014, having been elected to his House seat seven times by his mid-Michigan constituents. Rogers then embarked on a successful career in private industry, becoming an expert in cybersecurity," the newspaper noted as it referred to his career.

Powerful teachers' unions share striking link with states struggling to teach kids to read

States with stronger teachers' unions tend to have weaker literacy performance and have adopted fewer of the policies credited with improving reading outcomes, according to a new analysis from a center-left think tank.

Eight of the 10 states to score among the worst in the Progressive Policy Institute’s (PPI) assessment of early-literacy policies were home to powerful teachers' unions. Among the top 60% of states in terms of early-literacy policy scores, only four had strong teachers' unions.

Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina and Indiana, all Republican-leaning states with weak unions, were among the states with the best literacy outcomes. Maine, New York, Illinois, Hawaii, Washington and Rhode Island, blue states, were among the worst.

ARKANSAS STUDENTS OUTPERFORM NATIONAL AVERAGE AFTER UNIVERSAL SCHOOL CHOICE EXPANSION, GOVERNOR SAYS

The pattern isn't universal. Maryland, a blue state with a strong teachers' union, has posted strong reading results, while South Dakota, a red state with a weaker union, has struggled. The differences suggest union strength and party control alone don't explain states' reading performance.

Rachel Canter, PPI’s director of education policy, conducted the analysis with colleagues by comparing teacher-union strength rankings with states’ early-literacy policy scores. Canter is also one of the people behind the slate of educational reforms in Mississippi that propelled the state from among the worst in the country for educational outcomes to among the best.

"Democrats, however, don’t often ask me how to replicate Mississippi’s success," Canter said. "They ask if it’s possible at all, given the power of teachers’ unions in their home states."

Teachers' unions, according to Canter, exert massive amounts of influence over both educational policies and how those policies are implemented in the classroom. This can make schools in states with stronger unions slower to adapt to challenges or to adopt new, better methods.

Mississippi’s reforms, among other things, added kindergarten-through-third-grade screenings, literacy coaches, individual reading plans and held back third-graders who failed the state reading test. The state reinforced those measures with science-based reading instruction, increased teacher training and tougher licensing requirements.

Tweaks to teaching like these can be difficult to achieve in states with influential teachers' unions, with labor reps arguing that the changes place undue burdens on educators.

Bill Belichick's son resigns as North Carolina's defensive coordinator as investigation into culture closes

Steve Belichick is no longer the defensive coordinator at North Carolina. The university announced Belichick's resignation in conjunction with the conclusion of an internal investigation into the football program's culture under his father, Bill Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach.

On July 27, the Tar Heels announced that general manager Michael Lombardi had been placed on administrative leave following a human resources complaint filed against him, which sparked the internal investigation into the football program.

Lombardi stepped down from his role on Sept. 3, but the internal investigation was not wrapped up until Thursday's announcement. North Carolina's statement explained the investigation found that "actions were isolated in scope and not a systemic failure."

"The University has concluded a thorough and independent investigation into allegations related to culture and climate within the Carolina football program," the statement read.

"The investigation determined that certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina's values and standards of conduct. The investigation also found that these actions were isolated in scope and not a systemic failure."

The university did not directly connect Steve Belichick's resignation to Lombardi's or the investigation into the football program.

Bill Belichick announced in early August that Steve was away from the team on medical leave.

"It’s a medical situation, so I really can’t make any further comment on that," Bill Belichick told the media in August.

Steve Belichick's resignation will go into effect on Oct. 27, 2026, following the conclusion of his ongoing medical leave, the school said in its announcement.

The Tar Heels' announcement also included a note that wide receiver Keeyun Chapman has been suspended from the team indefinitely in connection with "an incident" that occurred Tuesday night.

President Donald Trump's latest cash promise to Americans is unlikely to come to fruition, just like others before it, an economist and former congressional budget hawk told Fox News Digital.

"So the president has promised a lot of checks, the most recent being $5,000 to every American if Republicans hold on to the House and Senate. We ever going to see these? Well, I don't think so," said Douglas Holz-Eakin, president of fiscal policy think tank American Action Forum.

Holz-Eakin previously served as the director of the Congressional Budget Office and as the director of domestic and economic policy for late Republican Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign.

"The DOGE checks were never realistic because DOGE was never going to save that much money," said Holz-Eakin in reference to the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency's sweeping layoffs and budget cuts to federal agencies.

He continued: "And the tariff checks were never that realistic because [Trump] didn't have the authority to issue the checks, and that's actually true of all of these promises."

Holz-Eakin also mentioned the Trump administration's recently proposed plan to give $9,000 checks to stay-at-home mothers likely won't come through either.

"Trying to get money to stay at home moms for childcare, there's a route to that, but it's gonna be tough ... we'll see if they actually pull it off," he said. "So, I would be skeptical that any of these checks are gonna be in your mailbox very soon."

The internationally-known economist likened the Trump administration's fiscal policy to that of former President Joe Biden's Democratic administration.

"I think we've seen two successive administrations get themselves in the following position: inflation is too high and wages aren't keeping up with it. Well, that's failing at the American dream," Holz-Eakin explained.

He said that getting inflation under control was the first step in restoring order, as well as being "utterly supportive" of the Federal Reserve, which Holz-Eakin says is working to achieve that goal.

The Fed hiked interest rates Wednesday for the first time in three years, and signaled that more rate increases could be coming. This comes despite Trump's push to have the world's most powerful central bank lower interest rates to lessen the monthly burden on Americans seeking home and auto loans.

"Inflation remains elevated," the Federal Open Market Committee said in a post-meeting statement. "Today’s policy action will support a timelier return to the Committee’s 2 percent goal. The Committee will deliver price stability."

"You need to have, I think, a more vibrant economy, and this economy is doing okay, but it's putting up with a lot of headwinds," said Holz-Eakin.

He named specific Trump administration policy decisions he says are to blame for the lackluster economy, which has burdened the middle class as grocery prices continue to rise.

"The first headwinds were tariffs, second headwinds were the oil prices and fight with Iran, and we need to get past those battles, and let the economy just go, and ... that would be a better environment for the families," he told Fox News Digital.

As for overall fiscal policy, Holz-Eakin says he's worried that the country is going in the wrong direction when it comes to economic and fiscal policy.

"I'm a former director of the Congressional Budget Office. I have to every day get up and look at the books and wonder, 'how's this going to add up?'" he said. "And right now it doesn't add up."

"We're $41 trillion in debt. The deficit is $2 trillion every year and it's getting larger. You can't just keep putting people on the on government programs. It won't add up."

He proposed a fix — reverting to "old-school conservative" politics.

"I'd like to see a bit of a U-turn that got the debt under control, didn't spend quite so much money, and got through this without having to raise our taxes. So, that sounds like an old-school conservative plan to me, but that's not what we're seeing right now."

Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comment on Trump's economic promises, but did not hear back at time of publication.

Idaho prosecutors accuse Bryan Kohberger of 'fishing' to find better arguments for bid to withdraw guilty plea

Idaho prosecutors are accusing Bryan Kohberger's new legal team of attempting a "fishing expedition" and trying to buy time to find better arguments for his bid to withdraw his guilty plea.

"Unfortunately for [Kohberger], that is not how discovery in post-conviction proceedings works," Deputy Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Keith Scholl wrote in a response to the convicted killer's request for more time to file an amended petition.

The deadline is currently set for Nov. 13 — four years to the day since the Idaho student murders in Moscow.

Kohberger's lawyers argue that the deadline would force them to irrevocably waive any claims not included in the amended petition, which is due before discovery deadlines set for next year. They want to see discovery materials before filing it.

"Post-conviction discovery is supposed to assist you and your lawyers in proving a legitimate constitutional claim, in this case, ineffective assistance of counsel," said Randolph Rice, a Maryland-based attorney and legal analyst who has been following the case.

"It isn't supposed to be a fishing expedition to help you invent a new one," he added. "You don't get to throw a fishing net into the discovery ocean and hope you pull up a constitutional violation."

Falcons star Bijan Robinson wants every NFL team to play indoors one day: 'That would be sick'

Atlanta Falcons superstar running back Bijan Robinson knows how much of a blessing it is to play in the NFL.

He also understands the blessing of playing home games inside a domed stadium each season.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Falcons, doesn’t have to worry about the elements outside when it’s time for kickoff. It is one of 10 NFL stadiums with domes or fixed/retractable roofs, as it fits into the latter category. The Falcons are one of 11 teams lucky enough to not have to brave any elements when they see a home game on the schedule, but Robinson believes the entire league should experience that someday.

Robinson had quite the suggestion for the NFL during a recent interview with OutKick.

"I wish one day the NFL can make every team indoors. I think that would be sick," he said, while also discussing his partnership with Sonic.

In theory, it would be sick. No matter what the outside weather says, whether it’s heavy rains or snows, strong wind gusts, or freezing cold temperatures, the climate and conditions will always be the same inside a domed field. Every team gets the same conditions to work with and no excuses in terms of elements can be used to blame a poor performance.

However, Robinson’s dream of playing a 17-game-plus schedule in all domes isn’t very likely to come to fruition.

In every sport, there are purists, and football fans are very much at the top of the list. Seeing the winds in Cleveland coming off the lake, or braving the snow in Buffalo in the winter is what traditional football fans look forward to. It’s football – no element other than thunder and lightning will stop what goes on.

"I can’t speak for people in Buffalo," Robinson said. "I know they love the snow, they love to be in it. But I feel like there would be a lot of people, too, that might enjoy not having to shovel it out. I know that’s a part of the culture, but if you could just go inside, go there and enjoy the game. Hopefully, we’ll see. Maybe in 10 years we could make that happen."

While it’s highly unlikely every team will play in a domed stadium, those building new homes already have it in mind.

Almost all seven of the new NFL stadiums currently under construction or planned feature a dome, retractable roof, or a skylight structure. The exception was actually in Buffalo, as the new Highmark Stadium, which gets its debut on Thursday night between the Bills and Detroit Lions, has an open-air roof.

But teams like the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns are building enclosed venues. Also, the projects involving the Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs all feature plans to enclose the field in some capacity.

It would be about one-third of the stadium where domes come into play, and sure, players may feel just like Robinson after not having to power through the elements if they don’t have to.

For now, though, it’s a privilege Robinson is well aware of.

"It’s definitely awesome to get to play inside. That’s a huge advantage because you don’t have to worry about the elements," he explained. "The sun, like, dragging down your energy, or the cold. … For us, we just embrace it. We still practice outside in that heat, and I think it really helps us a lot practicing outdoors. It’s one of those things where it’s not cold here, so the weather changes in Atlanta all the time. One day it could be sunny, one day it could be gloomy, or rain and stuff like that.

"For us, it doesn’t really matter what the elements are like during the week. It could pour rain all day and we’re going right inside on Sunday. It’s definitely a blessing to play inside and play a lot of teams that are inside."

Robinson and the Falcons are a very lucky group this season, as they have only five outdoor games remaining on their 2026 schedule. They will face the Green Bay Packers on "Thursday Night Football" in Week 3, followed by games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Week 8, Nov. 1), Browns (Week 14, Dec. 13), Commanders (Week 15, Dec. 20) and Carolina Panthers (Week 18, TBD).

With football season officially back, Robinson highlighted his favorite food pairing if he were the one sitting down to watch the Falcons and the rest of the NFL slate on Sundays.

Federal judge ties ICE agents' hands with ruling on warrantless Southern California arrests

A federal judge with the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California issued a preliminary injunction to block the U.S. government from conducting warrantless civil immigration arrests in the district unless the arrestee is deemed likely to escape before a warrant can be procured.

"Defendants are enjoined from enforcing their policy and practice of making warrantless civil immigration arrests in this District without a prearrest individualized determination by the arresting agent or officer of probable cause that the person being arrested is likely to escape before a warrant can be obtained, as required by 8 U.S.C. 1357(a)(2) and 8 C.F.R. § 287.8(c)(2)," the order signed by U.S. District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong reads, in part.

Frimpong was nominated by former President Joe Biden during his White House tenure.

Los Angeles NBC helicopter seen plummeting toward ground in dashcam video

Dashcam video from a Los Angeles driver captured an NBC and Telemundo news helicopter rapidly descending toward the ground moments before a fiery crash that killed three people.

The video, captured by driver Year Valencia, shows the helicopter dropping from the sky Tuesday while its crew was covering a separate deadly collision involving an SUV and a city bus.

"I downloaded the video of my dashcam. It’s a little dot on the video. It’s a crisp video, and it just goes down," Valencia told KTLA, which first obtained the footage. "God, it’s so close, it could have happened to anyone. My parents walk down the street."

NBC REPORTER, PILOT AMONG THE VICTIMS IDENTIFIED IN DEADLY LOS ANGELES HELICOPTER CRASH

The helicopter crashed in the Chatsworth neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley, killing NBC4 and Telemundo 52 reporter Eliana Moreno, pilot George Marciniw and 29-year-old Edy Gutierrez Mejia, who was on the ground.

The aircraft went down near a storage facility and caught fire, with the blaze spreading to at least four vehicles and two storage containers.

The crash came roughly two hours after the SUV slammed into the city bus in a separate collision that killed two people and injured six others, according to authorities. Police said the SUV had been traveling the wrong way, ran a red light and struck another vehicle before hitting the bus.

VICTIMS IDENTIFIED IN FATAL AMAZON CARGO JET CRASH AT MIAMI AIRPORT

Police arrested the SUV's driver, 36-year-old Bailee Lynn Rios, on murder charges Tuesday night. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office was reviewing the case to determine what charges, if any, would be filed in court.

The cause of the helicopter crash remained under investigation Wednesday. Video broadcast from the helicopter before it went down captured an alarm sounding inside the aircraft as it began losing altitude.

National Transportation Safety Board investigator Fabian Salazar said Wednesday that the helicopter's final video could provide investigators with critical evidence as they work to determine what caused the crash. The sounds captured on the recording appeared consistent with changes in engine speed and likely cockpit advisory tones, he said.

GOP congressman presses WNBA to define ‘women’ after Enes Kanter Freedom, Royce White ruled ineligible

Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-Ind., is pressing WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert for answers about the league’s eligibility rules, including one very basic question: How does the WNBA define "women"?

In a follow-up letter to Engelbert obtained by OutKick, the Indiana Republican and other members of Congress question the league’s handling of player safety, fan confrontations and, now, who is actually eligible to play in the WNBA.

The letter comes as Engelbert prepares to leave the league. She announced Sept. 4 that she will retire at the end of 2026 after more than seven years as commissioner, and the WNBA has already begun the process of searching for her successor.

That timing adds another layer to Stutzman’s request, which asks Engelbert to answer several questions about league policy before Oct. 16.

The WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement says that "only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA." But it does not go any further in defining what that means.

That became a bigger issue this summer after Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham said female athletes should not have to compete against biological men.

Former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White later announced that they identified as women and planned to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft, seemingly forcing the league to address the issue directly. League sources later told media outlets that neither man was eligible for the draft.

Now Stutzman wants to know why.

"How does the WNBA define ‘women’ for purposes of Article XIII, Section 1(a) of its collective bargaining agreement?" the lawmakers ask in the letter.

They then follow with: "If the WNBA has no definition of ‘women,’ why were Freedom and White deemed ineligible to join the 2027 WNBA draft?"

The letter argues that by ruling Freedom and White ineligible, the league has already shown that it recognizes a distinction when deciding who can play.

"As a women’s sports league, the WNBA must ensure the League remains exclusively for biological women," the lawmakers wrote. They also cited Cunningham’s comments and raised concerns about fairness and player safety.

But the eligibility question is only part of the letter.

Stutzman and other Republican lawmakers previously wrote to Engelbert over concerns about player safety and the treatment of Caitlin Clark. Engelbert responded by outlining the league’s review process and its efforts to create a safe environment for players.

The lawmakers now argue that the league’s actions since then have not matched those assurances.

They point to Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington’s Aug. 8 Flagrant 2 foul on Sophie Cunningham and another incident involving Golden State’s Tiffany Hayes just four days later.

The letter also compares the WNBA’s handling of Carrington to the NBA’s past discipline of Draymond Green, who received suspensions after repeated physical incidents.

Stutzman also raises concerns about how the league handles confrontations between players and fans.

The letter cites Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud’s confrontation with Freedom during an Aug. 23 game at Wintrust Arena. It compares the lack of discipline for Cloud with the five-game suspension given to Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton after a separate confrontation with fans.

The lawmakers are asking whether the WNBA has a consistent policy for players, coaches and team officials who get into verbal confrontations with spectators.

Altogether, the letter asks Engelbert to answer four questions by Oct. 16: what the league has done to address repeated physical play, how it handles confrontations with fans, how it defines "women," and why Freedom and White were ruled ineligible for the draft.

"The WNBA has an extraordinary platform and influence," the lawmakers wrote. "We urge the League to use that platform responsibly by ensuring that rules are enforced equally to protect the safety of women playing the game and fans in the stands."

CONCORD, N.H. - A Republican running to flip a blue Senate seat in a crucial battleground state is flipping the script on the Democrats' anti-incumbent argument.

Former Sen. John E. Sununu, the GOP Senate nominee who's running to return to Capitol Hill after 18 years away, charges that his Democratic rival, Rep. Chris Pappas, has "been in Washington for 8 years and hasn't delivered for New Hampshire."

Sununu and Pappas are facing off in the midterm election in the battle to succeed retiring longtime Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen in a race that's one of roughly a dozen that will determine if Republicans hold their control of the Senate.

"He has attempted very little in Congress. He's accomplished even less," Sununu said in an exclusive Fox News Digital interview this week, as he blasted Pappas, a four-term congressman.

Sununu was interviewed ahead of a move by the Cook Political Report, a top nonpartisan campaign handicapper, to shift the race in New Hampshire from lean Democrat to toss-up. Earlier this month, another leading nonpartisan handicapper, Inside Elections, also changed their rating to a toss-up.

It was a rare move in favor of the Republicans amid a political cycle where the GOP is facing traditional political headwinds for the party in power in D.C.. Republicans are also confronting an extremely rough political climate fueled by persistent inflation, soaring fuel prices due to the ongoing war with Iran, and President Donald Trump's underwater approval ratings.

So what's Sununu's secret sauce?

Part of it is his last name, which is a political brand in New Hampshire. Sununu's father, John E. Sununu, served six years as governor before heading to Washington, D.C., as then-President George H.W. Bush's White House chief of staff. And one of his younger brothers, Chris Sununu, recently served eight years as governor before taking a break from politics.

But also boosting Sununu, his strategy to blast Pappas as a do-nothing member of Congress during another anti-incumbent election cycle, which is a turn of the tables on the Democrats' playbook.

"He's been on the Transportation Committee for eight years, and New Hampshire is dead last in highway funding in New England. That hurts New Hampshire. His ineffectiveness is doing damage to the state because we're not getting the support we need from Washington," Sununu claimed.

While it doesn't rank dead last in every single metric or category, New Hampshire receives some of the lowest total and per-capita levels of federal funding for roads, highways and bridges of any state in the country, according to federal and state figures.

Pappas, earlier this year, introduced the Highway Fair Share Act, a bill to increase federal funding for infrastructure and transportation projects for New Hampshire by requiring that each state receive at least 0.5% of the total federal-aid highway formula funding.

Pappas and the rest of the all-Democratic congressional delegation in June highlighted $9 million in federal funding for New Hampshire projects.

"Chris Pappas has led efforts to expand healthcare benefits for 3.5 million veterans, bring high-speed internet to towns across New Hampshire, put more money back in the pockets of working parents, and secure millions of dollars to improve and repair roads, bridges, and buildings," Pappas Campaign Manager Rachel Petri told Fox News Digital, as she shared a long list of funding accomplishments by the congressman.

Petri said, "Chris is rated among the most effective and bipartisan lawmakers and his record stands in stark contrast to John Sununu’s record of voting to cut Medicare, leading efforts to privatize Social Security, and backing Donald Trump’s tariffs and war with Iran."

Sununu's anti-incumbent argument is a bit ironic, considering he spent six years in the House and a term in the Senate before losing a rematch with then-former Gov. Shaheen in the 2008 election.

Looking back at his years on Capitol Hill, Sununu touted his record "of writing and passing legislation under Democrat presidents, Republican presidents, a Democrat Congress, Republican Congress."

But he also emphasized, "I've been in the private sector for the last 16 years. That's a good thing, working for tech firms and small businesses, the Waterville Valley ski area [the Sununu family has had a controlling interest in the resort since 2010], teaching college. It's... a perspective that I think is missing from Washington."

Pappas, in a recent Fox News Digital interview, highlighted that New Hampshire is "a state of voters who are pragmatic, who want their lives to be better and want problems to be solved, and I can demonstrate the ways that I've been working on those issues."

"It's expanding access to health care, building more affordable housing in New Hampshire, and ensuring that we're standing up to an administration that's ignoring the day-to-day concerns of Granite Staters," he added.

But Sununu wasn't the only one taking aim at Pappas as a do-nothing incumbent. Even his long-shot socialist rival in last week's primary took a shot.

First-time candidate and scientist Karishma Manzur, in a recent Fox News Digital interview, charged that "all [Pappas] wants to do is just get his little cushy job and go to D.C., go to all these parties and these restaurants and just do whatever the bare minimum is."

Pappas ended up crushing Manzur in the primary by a two-to-one margin, and Sununu defeated former Sen. Scott Brown in a landslide to capture the GOP nomination.

With the general election sprint underway, Republican-aligned outside groups are now pouring millions into the state to target Pappas. And Pappas is using this week's Cook Political Report race rating to ring an alarm.

"MAGA super PACs are pouring millions of dollars a week into New Hampshire to try to flip this seat. And this race is officially a Toss Up," he warned on social media.

And Pappas told Fox News Digital recently that Sununu is "backed up by out-of-state special interests and dark money in this campaign. They're outspending us 3 to 1 on TV."

Firing back, this week a Democrat-aligned super PAC started running ads charging that, after he left the Senate, Sununu cashed in by working for lobbying firms.

Sununu was endorsed earlier this year by Trump, and since then Democrats have repeatedly tied the president, whose approval ratings are well into negative territory in New Hampshire, to Sununu.

Pappas called Sununu Trump's "hand-picked candidate."

Asked about the full-court press by Pappas and Democrats to anchor him to Trump, Sununu told Fox News Digital, "I've never even met the president."

But contrasting himself with Pappas, Sununu added that "there's no question I'll be a much more effective voice with this administration."
