Two dead, 2-year-old boy among 5 others injured in Seattle Center mass shooting

A suspect was taken into custody after two people were killed and multiple others were wounded Sunday in a mass shooting at the Seattle Center, according to Mayor Katie Wilson and police.

Wilson called the shooting "an act of horrific violence."

"Impacted families are living through the worst moment of their lives, and an entire community is trying to understand how a gathering built around culture, connection, and joy ended in gunfire," Wilson said in a statement. "No one should have to weigh the risk of being shot before attending an event, gathering with friends, or experiencing their city."

Police and emergency crews began arriving at the center shortly after 6 p.m. The venue was hosting the Bite of Seattle food festival over the weekend.

"Please avoid the area," Seattle Police wrote on X.

The Seattle Fire Department said two people were pronounced dead at the scene after attempting life-saving procedures.

Three other victims, including a 2-year-old, were transported to a hospital in stable condition, while a fourth victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

A fifth victim with minor injuries declined to be transported to a hospital.

"Our first responsibilities are supporting grieving families, caring for the injured, and providing clear and accurate information for the public," she added.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Seattle Police Department for additional information.

Kayla Carris, 22, said she was sitting outside the Armory at the Bite of Seattle when people began to scream and run for cover inside the Seattle Center Armory.

"Everyone was just throwing stuff and running," Carris told The Seattle Times. "Like everyone."

Todd Behrends, 59, said he heard what appeared to be several rounds of shots.

People began running and jumping over each other to escape, Behrends told the outlet. One woman fell, and someone stepped on her leg.

Behrends said he saw a woman on the ground and a man on a stretcher as he ran toward an exit.

Harborview Medical Center is on lockdown due to increased police activity in the area following the mass casualty incident, according to an email sent to staff, The Seattle Times reported.

The Seattle Center Monorail was also closed for the remainder of Sunday.

Judge limits BBC from relitigating Jan 6 in Trump lawsuit over misleading documentary edit

A federal judge last week drew a sharp line around President Donald Trump's $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC, ruling the broadcaster can probe how Trump's Jan. 6, 2021, speech was understood by the public — but cannot relitigate the riot at the U.S. Capitol itself.

The ruling was handed down by U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett as the BBC faces continued scrutiny over a 2024 "Panorama" documentary about Trump’s speech on Jan. 6.

The documentary — titled "Trump: A Second Chance?" — was subsequently labeled as misleading by critics who noticed it omitted Trump’s call for supporters to protest peacefully at the Capitol. The documentary stitched together remarks Trump made nearly an hour apart during his address that made it appear as if he had told his supporters to "fight like hell" down at the Capitol — the comments were actually out of context — shortly before the Capitol riot that day.

"All of the impressions that were received by President Trump’s statements on Jan 6 are at issue," Lett said at the hearing, according to reports. "The full relitigation of Jan. 6 is not at issue."

A source close to Trump's legal team, which has accused the BBC of a "fishing expedition," said the judge's decision on that specific item was significant.

"It's important because this case is about a very limited splicing that consisted of nine seconds of a more than 50-minute speech and, rather than focus just on that, the BBC is trying to distract the judge, ultimately the jurors in this case, from that very limited scenario, and what they're trying to do is expand the scope of this case to litigate January 6 simply to take the attention off of them for their own wrongful conduct," the source told Fox News Digital.

"And so when the judge made that determination that that's not going to happen, that eliminated the primary defense that the BBC was seeking to employ in this case, which was to create a distraction, to make this case into something that was just going to be unmanageable and unnecessary, which is, 'We're going to try the whole January 6 case here.' The BBC has no standing, legal standing or any basis to bring such a defense."

Trump filed a lawsuit against the BBC in December in a personal capacity for both defamation and for a violation of Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act for $5 billion apiece, seeking $10 billion total.

At Tuesday’s hearing, Trump’s lawyers argued in a Miami courtroom that the president’s intent and third-party interpretations of his remarks were irrelevant because the lawsuit only points to the exact words Trump used in his speech, according to Politico.

"What matters is what he said relative to what was broadcast that he said. That’s it. There’s nothing more that needs to be examined," Trump attorney Alejandro Brito reportedly said.

Brito cited the written apology penned by BBC Chairman Samir Shah to Trump last year, in which Shah admitted that the documentary "gave the mistaken impression that [Trump] had made a direct call for violent action."

"He acknowledged the falsity," Brito told the judge, according to the outlet.

However, Sasha Dudding, an attorney for the BBC, noted that Shah had deemed the misleading edit as unintentional, and argued that the intent behind Trump’s speech is fair game for the outlet’s attorneys to investigate, Politico reported.

Dudding pointed to Trump’s own denial within the lawsuit, in which he asserted that he was not responsible for his supporters carrying out the riot at the Capitol, according to Politico.

Ultimately, Lett ruled that while the BBC can delve into the interpretation of Trump’s speech by his supporters, the trial will not re-examine the cause or legality of the actual riot.

The judge also determined that the BBC overstepped in some instances regarding requests to examine the findings of several investigations into Jan. 6, the outlet reported.

The issue surrounding the documentary’s editing integrity comes after a report from The Telegraph revealed excerpts from a whistleblower dossier compiled by Michael Prescott, a communications advisor hired by the BBC to review its editorial standards.

The whistleblower alleged the network’s documentary spliced two separate comments made by Trump nearly an hour apart on the day of the Capitol riot, which erroneously implied that the president was calling for violence from his supporters.

"We're going to walk down to the Capitol. And I'll be there with you. And we fight — we fight like hell," the documentary showed Trump saying, without noting that the statement had been edited.

In reality, Trump said, "We're going to walk down to the Capitol. And we're going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we're probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them, because you'll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong."

Trump called on his supporters 54 minutes later to "fight like hell" for election integrity.

The controversy ultimately led to the resignations of BBC CEO Deborah Turness and Director-General Tim Davie last year.

What drove the majority of media attention and headlines this week was Lett ordering Trump to hand over financial information as part of the suit, according to Politico.

"All of President Trump’s brand, properties and businesses are impugned or said to have been impugned. Reputational, economic damages, all of that is now at issue in this case," Lett reportedly said.

Lett reportedly based the ruling on Trump’s argument that his businesses were negatively impacted by the network’s coverage, thus presenting the opportunity for the BBC to delve into the financial records of over 400 companies controlled by a Trump family trust.

This was widely covered as a significant blow to Trump. Headlines included MS NOW's "BBC to access Trump’s financial records as his dubious lawsuit starts to backfire," The Daily Mail's "Trump suffers humiliating legal blow in $10 billion BBC lawsuit," and The Guardian's "Trump must divulge financial details about businesses in $10bn BBC lawsuit."

However, a source close to the Trump legal team says the judge's order is "far more limiting" than what's been reported, saying she still must enter an order specifying what she'd require as part of the discovery process.

"The judge made it abundantly clear that although she's going to require certain financial information to be disclosed relating to the trust and the companies that are operated by the trust, that's not as broad as the BBC would like," the source told Fox News Digital. "At the end of the day, the financial information that they're seeking with regard to the Trump Organization has nothing to do with this case … We simply are viewing this in a way that's going to be far more narrowed and tailored than what's being reported."

Trump's team is now arguing he's only seeking amends for damage to his reputation rather than to businesses under his umbrella.

"This case is not going to be about any damage caused to the Trump Organization. It's always been about the damage caused to President Trump," the source close to Trump's team said.

While Lett reportedly said she does not possess the power to drop the business damages allegations from the suit, Trump can appeal the decision to one of his own appointees, U.S. District Court Judge Roy Altman.

The BBC, meanwhile, has argued the case should be dismissed on the grounds that a Florida court has no jurisdiction over what the British broadcaster aired across the ocean.

Fox News Digital reached out to the BBC for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

Katy Perry blasts White House for using hit song 'Firework' she sold in $225M catalog deal

Katy Perry blasted the White House for using her hit 2010 song "Firework" in a TikTok video without her permission, years after the pop star sold the majority of her music catalog in a reported $225 million deal.

On Thursday, the White House TikTok account shared a video featuring black and white footage of recent military strikes on Iranian targets, timed to the "boom, boom, boom" lyric from "Firework."

"Iran has been warned," the caption read, along with a firework emoji.

In an X, formerly Twitter, post that she shared on Saturday, the 41-year-old pop star condemned the inclusion of her song in the clip.

"I am deeply appalled and angry to see ‘Firework’ used on the @WhiteHouse TikTok account as a backing track for video footage of military strikes," Perry wrote. "I did not approve this, I was not asked, and I absolutely do not condone it."

"I wrote this song to be an anthem of hope, healing, and inner strength for people going through their darkest personal moments," she continued. "To see a message of self-worth and upliftment weaponized to soundtrack destruction and violence is a complete violation of everything my song stands for."

"My music is for bringing people together, not celebrating warfare," Perry concluded.

The White House's post comes as President Donald Trump's administration remains locked in a tense standoff with Iran following recent U.S. military strikes and ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.

When reached for comment, the White House directed Fox News Digital to an X post by Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy Communications Director Kaelan Dorr.

In a reply to Perry's post, Dorr shared a montage of clips from the music video for the singer's 2012 song "Part of Me" in which the 13-time Grammy Award nominee was seen joining the U.S. Marines and undergoing military training alongside other service members.

"This you?" Dorr wrote alongside the video.

In September 2023, Perry sold her music catalog rights covering her first five studio albums to Litmus Music, a subsidiary of The Carlyle Group, in a deal reportedly worth $225 million. The agreement included her interests in the master recording royalties and music publishing rights for "One of the Boys" (2008), "Teenage Dream" (2010), "PRISM" (2013), "Witness" (2017) and "Smile" (2020).

Released in 2010 as the third single from "Teenage Dream," "Firework" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks and became one of the biggest hits of her career. The song's success helped "Teenage Dream" tie Michael Jackson's "Bad" as the only albums in history to produce five number one singles.

Along with "Firework," the sale also encompassed many of Perry's other mega-hit singles, including "I Kissed A Girl," "Hot N' Cold," "Roar," "California Gurls" and "Dark Horse."

Perry is the latest artist to clash with the Trump administration over the use of their songs in official social media posts. Other musicians who have recently objected include Ariana Grande, Kesha, Sabrina Carpenter, Céline Dion, Bruce Springsteen and others.

In June, Grande slammed the Trump administration for using her song "Bye" in a TikTok video depicting Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests, writing in the comments section: "please do not ever use my music in relation to this barbaric, inhumane, heinous nonsense. f-- ice."

The White House later fired back at the "Wicked" star in a statement shared with Fox News Digital.

"We’ll say this one last time: what’s actually barbaric, inhumane, and heinous are the criminal illegal aliens who have injured and murdered innocent American citizens," White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said.

However, the song was later removed from the video.

In March, Kesha denounced the White House on social media after it used her 2010 hit "Blow" in a TikTok video showing a fighter jet launching a missile at a naval target, saying the administration was using her music to "incite violence and threaten war."

"Trying to make light of war is disgusting and inhumane," Kesha wrote on X.

The "Die Young" singer said she "absolutely" does not "approve of my music being used to promote violence of any kind."

Newborn vanished after secret birth, parents allegedly claimed baby 'was a prank': cops

A Florida couple accused of claiming their missing infant never existed has been arrested in North Carolina after a yearlong investigation into the child’s presumed death.

Leon Alejandro Jr., 21, and Samantha Feliz, 20, both of Hollywood, Florida, were arrested Wednesday in Rockingham, North Carolina, where investigators say they fled while Hollywood police investigated the disappearance of their infant.

The pair were taken into custody by investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Marshals Service and booked into the Richmond County Jail on fugitive of justice warrants. They are being held without bond pending extradition to Florida.

Hollywood police began investigating the case in early 2025 after learning Feliz allegedly gave birth sometime between Dec. 6, 2024, and Jan. 5, 2025, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said the birth was concealed and happened somewhere other than a hospital.

Investigators said family members saw the couple with the baby during the child's first month of life. After that, authorities said, the infant was never seen again.

According to an arrest warrant obtained by WPLG, investigators believe the child, identified only by the initials A.F., was last photographed on Jan. 5, 2025. Detectives wrote that the infant appeared "visibly ill and malnourished" and showed "no signs of life" in what they described as the final known image.

The warrant also alleges investigators searched multiple locations with cadaver dogs but were unable to locate the child's remains, according to the outlet.

Authorities allege Alejandro and Feliz repeatedly denied the child existed, telling relatives the baby "was a prank" and later claiming the pregnancy had been a "hoax" intended to scam family members out of money, WPLG reported, citing the arrest warrant.

According to the outlet, investigators said photographs showed Feliz visibly pregnant, while text messages discussed the pregnancy and the baby.

Detectives also reportedly recovered baby clothing, a positive pregnancy test and what appeared to be blood-stained towels from a storage unit tied to the couple. DNA testing later determined blood recovered from the baby clothing and towels belonged to a biological child of Alejandro and Feliz, according to the warrant.

Despite the lack of a birth certificate or medical records, investigators said they developed enough evidence to charge both suspects with aggravated manslaughter of a child, tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, failure to report a death to the medical examiner, providing false information concerning a missing child and making false reports to law enforcement.

Authorities allege the couple fled Florida and were living on property belonging to one of Alejandro's relatives in Richmond County when investigators located and arrested them July 22.

Richmond County Sheriff Mark Gulledge praised the multi-agency effort that led to the arrests.

Brunson, who was alongside his wife, Ali, happened to arrive at a World Cup after-party hosted by Justin Bieber in New York City at the same time as Michael Porter Jr., who was with his former Denver Nuggets teammate Peyton Watson.

NY circus performer airlifted to hospital after colleague's arrow misses target, strikes his neck

A circus performer was airlifted to a hospital after his colleague missed her target and hit him in the neck with an arrow while performing in New York, according to authorities.

The incident happened as Edwin Cuervo Rangel, 38, and Ana Daza Tavera, 42, were performing at the Orange County Fair in the town of Wallkill at around 9:30 p.m. on Friday, New York State Police said in a press release.

Cuervo Rangel and Daza Tavera are married, according to News 12.

The two performers from Wisconsin were doing a stunt when Daza Tavera shot an arrow at a foam target that Cuervo Rangel was holding, according to police.

The arrow struck and injured Cuervo Rangel, police said.

"Well, last night, unfortunately, when she shot the crossbow, it caught him in his neck," Circus Murcia Ringmaster Benjamin Jackson told News 12.

"The good news is, she caught him right at the very corner of the neck. There was no blood, nothing," he added.

"Our thoughts remain with him during his recovery, and we sincerely appreciate the outstanding care provided by the first responders, medical team, and everyone who assisted," Murcia told the Hudson Valley Post.

The Orange County Fair opened on Thursday and is scheduled to be open daily through Aug. 2.

Nevada man dies at famed Sequoia National Park trail after sudden emergency

An elderly man reportedly died Thursday after suffering a medical emergency on a popular hiking trail in California's Sequoia National Park.

The victim was identified as 79-year-old John Francis Oliver of Henderson, Nevada, a suburb of Las Vegas, the Tulare County Sheriff's Office said, according to Your Central Valley.

Oliver was found along the General Sherman Tree Trail, a one-mile path that leads to the world's largest living tree, the General Sherman Tree, according to the outlet, citing the National Park Service (NPS).

First responders rendered emergency medical aid to Oliver at the scene, but the man was eventually pronounced dead in the park, according to SFGATE.

Elizabeth "Liz" Waddell, 44, was last seen Wednesday at Grand Anse Beach in St. George's, near where she was staying in the Grand Anse area, according to the Royal Grenada Police Force.

Waddell, a physical therapist, wife and mother from the Raleigh area, is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall with short blonde hair. Authorities also released a photo showing Waddell with pink hair as they asked the public for help locating her.

According to her professional website, Waddell is the founder of Art of Movement Physical Therapy and earned a doctorate in physical therapy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

According to a friend who said she has known Waddell and her husband for more than 20 years, Waddell traveled to Grenada for a vacation with another friend, WRAL News reported.

Waddell's friend reportedly lost sight of her after remaining at their Airbnb to take an online course while Waddell went outside, apparently for a swim.

"She had her swimsuit on, and she went outside their Airbnb," Amanda Romano-Harmon said, according to the local outlet. "They had a pool that overlooked the bay. Liz was set up out there just sightseeing from the pool, and her friend was taking her online course. When she got through with her course, she looked up and she didn't see Liz outside, so she went outside to walk around and see where she went, and she saw her towel down on the pier. So the only thing we can think is maybe she went for a swim."

The friend reportedly became increasingly concerned over the next several hours, knowing Waddell did not have her phone with her, and eventually filed a missing-persons report.

Waddell's husband, Cailen, was at work when he received the call about his wife's disappearance, according to the report.

He said on social media Friday that he was heading to the area to assist in the search and urged anyone with connections to the island to share information that could help locate her.

He also described Waddell as a kind-hearted person while speaking with local Grenada media outlets.

"My wife is a loving, free-spirited person. She could make friends with anyone. She often did," he told Grenada Broadcasting Network (GBN).

Police are urging anyone with information about Waddell's whereabouts to come forward, specifically asking fishermen, boat operators and residents along Grenada's southern coastline to report any sightings that could assist in the search.

According to GBN, an extensive search effort is underway with the assistance of police officers, divers and students from St. George's University.

The U.S. State Department told Fox News Digital on Sunday that officials are aware of reports of a missing American citizen in Grenada and emphasized that the Trump Administration has no higher priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens abroad.

The State Department declined to provide additional details due to privacy considerations but said it can assist families and friends with filing missing persons reports and help them understand local procedures.

Aradia Fitness, where Waddell also works as a fitness instructor, called the news of her disappearance "disheartening" in a social media post and said the community is praying for her safe return.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the South Saint George Police Station at 444-4454, the Criminal Investigation Department at 440-3921, the police emergency line at 911, or the nearest police station, the Royal Grenada Police Force said.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's remarks about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew criticism over the weekend from an unlikely source: Milwaukee Bucks forward Kyle Kuzma, who mocked the democratic socialist as a "mayor playing president."

Responding to the mayor's video on X, the nine-year NBA veteran suggested Mamdani was more concerned with appearances than governing, labeling the mayor's talking points as performative.

"This is 2026. People cosplaying as things they don’t have the authority, the talent, or the track record to actually be. Just for content," Kuzma wrote, quote-tweeting Mamdani's address.

The response came after Mamdani released a video calling for the arrest of Netanyahu under an International Criminal Court warrant ahead of the United Nations General Assembly.

"A mayor playing president. A founder playing operator. A content creator playing one-on-one, thinking he’s a pro. A 25-year-old with a ring light playing economist. Everyone auditioning. Days earlier, Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving and San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama were seen liking Mamdani's Instagram post, in which he called Netanyahu "the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people" and urged authorities to arrest him if he enters New York City.

Man faces murder charge after innocent 12-year-old is killed in Bronx street gunfire

A man has been charged with murder after a 12-year-old boy was killed by a stray bullet while riding his bicycle in the Bronx, as newly released surveillance video captures the desperate moments after he was struck.

William Ferrer, 45, was arrested Sunday morning and charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, manslaughter, six counts of assault and three counts of criminal possession of a weapon, the New York Police Department confirmed to Fox News Digital.

Police say Ferrer is accused of opening fire during a chaotic confrontation outside Wanda Deli Grocery on Elliot Place near the Grand Concourse in the Mount Eden neighborhood Saturday afternoon, killing 12-year-old Jacob Freytes, who investigators say was an innocent bystander.

According to police, Freytes had been riding his bicycle near the bodega when gunfire erupted shortly before 5 p.m. He was struck in the shoulder and rushed to NYC Health and Hospitals/Lincoln, where he was pronounced dead.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced Ferrer's arrest Sunday, calling Freytes' death "an act of senseless gun violence."

"Jacob was an innocent bystander on his bike when he was taken from his family yesterday in an act of senseless gun violence," Tisch wrote on X. "No arrest can ever ease the pain of this unimaginable loss, but the NYPD will continue to do everything in our power to seek justice for Jacob."

Surveillance video shared by United Bodegas of America shows Jacob exiting the neighborhood bodega after buying a ball and getting on his bicycle.

Moments later, as gunfire erupts, the video appears to show Freytes running back inside clutching his chest before collapsing to the floor as horrified customers look on.

The gunfire also wounded two other men. Police said a 34-year-old was shot in the foot, while a 25-year-old was struck in the buttocks. Both men were in stable condition.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani mourned Freytes' death in a statement posted to X following the shooting.

"My heart breaks for his family, friends and all those who loved him. Their loss is unimaginable," Mamdani wrote. "Our children should be able to ride their bikes on a nice summer day in their neighborhood without fear of being shot. We cannot accept this violence as normal."

The mayor also said he was praying for the recovery of the two surviving victims and thanked hospital staff and the NYPD "for their work to find those responsible for this heinous act."

New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams' office also mourned Freytes' death, saying "nothing could be more tragic."

"We mourn with 12-year-old Jacob Freytes' family," the Office of the Public Advocate wrote on social media. "Nothing could be more tragic: An innocent child on his bike, killed by a stray bullet."

The office added that "our children's safety is our collective responsibility" and called for "urgently implementing the strategies proven to make us safer."

Ferrer has had multiple prior run-ins with law enforcement dating back to 1999, according to the New York Post, which cited law enforcement sources. The outlet reported his record includes arrests on allegations of drug possession, drunken driving, possession of stolen property, menacing and criminal contempt.

Fernando Mateo, spokesman for the United Bodegas of America, called Freytes' death a devastating reminder of the toll gun violence continues to take on New York City during a Sunday press conference outside the bodega where the shooting happened.

"We're just tired of having these press conferences speaking about gun violence," Mateo said. "Whether it's in a bodega, whether it is in a cab, it's gun violence on our streets."

Mateo said surveillance video shows Freytes entering the neighborhood bodega to buy a ball before walking outside moments before the shooting erupted.

"He runs back into the bodega because he lives in the area, and he's a regular in that bodega seeking refuge," Mateo said. "But no, he didn't make it. Twelve years old."

One of MLB’s top trade candidates ahead of the Aug. 3 deadline might be out for the remainder of the season.

Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers, who was enjoying a career year behind the dish and in the batter’s box, suffered a torn meniscus that could force him to miss the rest of the season, per ESPN.

The 28-year-old hurt his knee while running on the basepaths, and now he and the team are deliberating over whether he should undergo surgery to repair the tear in the knee.

If surgery is the decision, ESPN reports it would be the end of Langeliers’ 2026 campaign.

But either way, teams that were interested in potentially trading for the All-Star catcher are very likely out of the running now. Langeliers is considered one of the best at his position in MLB, which is why the A’s had no plan to move him despite a 44-60 record on the year that puts them on the outside looking in at playoffs.

Langeliers is slashing .263/.332/.497 this season with a .829 OPS, 23 home runs and 51 RBI. These are the numbers the A’s were hoping Langeliers would post this season after a successful 2025 campaign that included 31 homers and a career-high .861 OPS.

He was on pace to break some more career highs, but this injury puts a damper in it all.

And those postseason contenders are just as bummed if they were hoping the A’s would change their position about moving Langeliers before the deadline. The New York Yankees, for one, are a team that’s expected to be in the catching market before the deadline, and calling the A’s about Langeliers would likely have occurred.

Now, catchers like Colorado Rockies’ Hunter Goodman and Baltimore Orioles’ Adley Rutschman could see an uptick in interest among teams hoping to bolster that position for a playoff push.

Hamas taps 'ultimate institutional survivor' as terror chief, sending message to Israel: expert

An old hand very familiar to Israel has emerged as the new political leader of Hamas following a secret insider election that took months to unfold, and one regional expert said the development signals the terrorist group will not be charting a new course.

Khalil al-Hayya, who has been a key negotiator for Hamas and who has survived multiple alleged assassination attempts, will now lead the group's political bureau. But Middle East Institute Senior Fellow Jaser AbuMousa told Fox News Digital his election is not exactly a passing of the torch.

"Expect more of the same, deliberately," AbuMousa said. "Al-Hayya is Hamas's chief negotiator and its ultimate institutional survivor, so you'll see continued engagement at the negotiating table, ceasefire talks, prisoner exchanges, but do not mistake that for moderation."

"Al-Hayya's victory is best understood as an act of institutional self-preservation: a battered organization reaching for the most familiar hand available," AbuMousa warned. "He is an experienced operator, and his elevation signals that Hamas, after the destruction of Gaza and the losses since Oct. 7, 2023, has prioritized organizational cohesion, armed continuity, and the preservation of its Iranian relationship over a genuine political reassessment."

Several members of al-Hayya's family, including four sons and other relatives, have also been killed in Israeli operations, according to reports.

In September 2025, Israel reportedly sought to kill al-Hayya in Qatar, striking a building where the Hamas delegation was staying.

"This is the paradox of Hamas leadership right now: the top job is essentially a death sentence, which is part of why the chair sat empty for nearly two years after Sinwar was killed," the expert said.

"Expect him to lead the way his predecessors did: rarely in public, moving between Doha and mediating capitals, communicating through statements and negotiators rather than appearances, with the real command decentralized so no single strike decapitates the movement," AbuMousa continued. "An organization that rewards who has suffered most, rather than who has led best, has no real mechanism to correct course after a catastrophe like this one. That's what should make anyone nervous."

"Al-Hayya lost his four sons, which is a real and profound loss for any father. But two things can be true at once," he noted. "His personal grief is genuine, and inside Hamas that sacrifice also functions as political capital that lifts him above criticism."

While Al-Hayya replaced Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces in October 2024, his rise to power followed a secret election that stretched over months.

"After the near-total destruction of Gaza and staggering losses since Oct. 7, Hamas had a moment to reassess, and it chose continuity instead," AbuMousa said. "It elevated a loyal survivor tied to Iran and the military wing rather than someone offering a different path."

"The real story," according to AbuMousa, "is that Hamas decided its safest bet was to remain exactly what it was: armed, aligned with Tehran, and unwilling to reckon with where its own decisions led Gaza."

He also cautioned against viewing the leadership vote as a mandate from Gazans.

"This was a closed vote by a leadership council, not an election by the roughly 2 million Gazans whose lives Hamas claims to represent and who haven't voted since 2006. Many of them blame Hamas for exposing them to this catastrophe," he said.

"And watch the likely governance model: not a return to running Gaza openly, but a Hezbollah-style arrangement where Hamas sheds visible responsibility while keeping its weapons, its security structures, and a veto over any political deal," he added.

Jackson Koivun holds off Scottie Scheffler to win first PGA Tour event just 24 days into pro career

At just 21 years old, and only 24 days as a professional golfer, Jackson Koivun can call himself a PGA Tour winner.

And he held off Scottie Scheffler, the world No.1 golfer, to do it at the 3M Open on TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota on Sunday.

Koivun shot 5-under in his final round to shoot 25-under to win the tournament, while Scheffler’s 8-under final round wasn’t enough as he finished three strokes behind a golfer that could become a household name quite soon.

Koivun propelled himself into prime position to win the tournament when he posted a 10-under 61 on Saturday in Round 3 to move to 20-under for the tournament. It was a tournament record during the round, too, as his 28 on the back-nine was the best score ever posted in those holes.

It was clear he was focused on winning it all during his final round, especially after going 3-under through his first six holes on the day.

Koivun would post two birdies on the back-nine, and finish with a bogey-free final round to put the icing on his breakout tournament of his very early PGA Tour career.

Now, after becoming a pro earlier this month, Koivun just cashed a $1.584 million check for winning what he hopes will be the first of many PGA Tour events.

"All throughout the crowd, I kept hearing, ‘Scottie’s coming, Scottie’s coming,’" Koivun admitted after his victory on the CBS broadcast. "I just tried to tone that out and keep playing the golf I knew I could."

It’s hard to block out when Scheffler’s climbing a leaderboard because it usually ends in his favor. After going 3-under on the front nine, Scheffler turned his putter into final-round gold on the turn, draining birdie putts on the first three holes of the back-nine. He cooled off, if you wish to call it that, before birdying two of his final three holes to give himself a chance.

Koivun didn’t blink, scoring par on his final two holes including the Hole 18 par-5, where he understandably pumped his fist after draining a final par putt to seal victory.

Winning isn’t anything new for the now-former top amateur in the world, but it’s a different feeling when it’s on the PGA Tour for the first time.

"I just love this game. I love golf, it’s everything I do. I have a tough time getting away from it," he explained. "…It’s been love at first sight."

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., rejected any regret Sunday on "Face the Nation" over his early support for former Maine Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner, saying he urged Platner to withdraw once a former girlfriend accused him of sexual assault.

Host Margaret Brennan asked Sanders whether he regretted not acting sooner in response to earlier warning signs, saying that could have given Platner's replacement, former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson, more time to campaign.

"No, I don’t think so," Sanders said. "When we heard the serious allegations made against him, I wanted to get on the phone. I wanted to talk to him. I did. I asked, along with virtually all his supporters, that he should get out of the race, and he did."

Brennan pressed Sanders on whether he was confident the other progressive candidates he had endorsed had been thoroughly examined.

"Well, look, I think, you know, there are hundreds of candidates. I don’t know who has been, quote unquote, fully vetted," Sanders said. "All I know is, Margaret, that the candidates that we are supporting are standing up for the working class of this country."

Sanders repeatedly campaigned with Platner and continued supporting him through controversies involving offensive social media posts, a Nazi-linked tattoo, allegations of abusive conduct and reports that he exchanged explicit messages with women while married. Platner denied serious wrongdoing while apologizing for some of his past posts and opinions.

When Sanders was asked in June whether he was reconsidering his endorsement following the report about the messages, he gave a two-word response.

"Certainly not," Sanders said, according to Fox News Digital.

Sanders later declined to answer when Fox News Digital asked whether he believed women who had accused Platner of abuse. He called Platner to step aside after the separate sexual assault allegation surfaced, and Platner formally withdrew earlier this month.

Maine Democrats selected Jackson by a 566-5 delegate vote Saturday, leaving him roughly 100 days to challenge veteran Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Collins is seeking a sixth term.

Before Jackson's nomination, Fox News Digital reported that his accelerated vetting had raised concerns about his past abortion position and reports concerning his temper, workplace conduct and mortgage history.

One Democratic strategist described the abbreviated examination of Jackson before delegates voted.

"This is a bit of a rocket vetting process," a Democratic strategist who works on Senate races, who asked to remain anonymous to speak more freely, told Fox News Digital.

The Maine turmoil comes amid a broader Democratic dispute over progressives challenging establishment-backed candidates. Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel warned in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece that "Bernie Bros" could damage Democrats in November by elevating candidates with unpopular positions, Fox News Digital reported.

Sanders said Emanuel’s criticism reflected an ideological and financial split within the party.

"There is a strong division within the Democratic Party," Sanders said on Sunday.

"You have an establishment like Rahm Emanuel, who are dependent on billionaire campaign contributors and want to maintain the status quo," Sanders said. "Then you have a progressive movement, which, by the way, what is getting these guys nervous is we are winning all over this country."

Newly released diary entries by Dr. Anthony Fauci offer an unfiltered look at what the nation's top infectious disease expert really thought of the politicians, television personalities and celebrities who filled his orbit during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Released by Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rand Paul, R-Ky., the diaries chronicle Fauci's day-to-day role during the COVID-19 pandemic through meetings, phone calls and personal observations. The release comes days before Fauci is scheduled to testify before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee after being subpoenaed by Paul.

The entries feature everyone from President Donald Trump to Julia Roberts, Steph Curry, Larry Ellison and Hunter Biden, offering an unusually personal look at the people who crossed Fauci's path during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Early entries portray a warm working relationship between Fauci and Trump. Fauci wrote that Trump repeatedly directed questions to him during White House meetings, called him "the smartest person in the world," told him, "We are counting on you," and later appeared "enamored" with him as Fauci's national profile grew.

Fauci, however, repeatedly described then-White House communications director Alyssa Farah as an ally during internal battles over media appearances. In one May 2020 entry, he wrote that Farah admitted White House staff had been "holding me back," said the situation had "gotten out of hand" and promised to begin clearing his television requests again.

Not everyone in the administration's communications operation earned Fauci's praise. In a July 2, 2020 entry, Fauci called then-HHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Michael Caputo "a con man who is completely full of sh--," writing that Caputo publicly claimed to support his television appearances while privately blocking them.

Television journalists also became recurring figures in Fauci's diary. CNN anchor Jake Tapper appears repeatedly, with Fauci documenting phone calls, text exchanges and dinners at the Tappers' Washington home.

After Fauci's heated exchange with Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, Fauci wrote that CNN's Dana Bash texted him, telling him he was "a better man" and relaying that fellow CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer had joked no one would have blamed Fauci if he had told Jordan to "go f--- yourself."

The following day, Fauci wrote that Bash texted him again, this time pointing him to a Vanity Fair headline mocking Jordan's performance at the hearing.

The diary also features colorful asides about billionaire Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, whom Fauci described as "a bit of a loose cannon" while discussing White House efforts to use Oracle technology during the pandemic.

Beyond politicians and White House aides, Fauci's diary reads at times like a Hollywood guest list. Actress Julia Roberts hosted Fauci on Instagram Live, sent him flowers and later presented him with an award, while Vogue editor Anna Wintour, comedian Trevor Noah, NBA star Steph Curry, actors Sean Penn and Matt Damon, and rapper Lil Wayne also make appearances as Fauci documented his growing celebrity during the pandemic.

The diary closes with another unexpected cameo. At the 2022 Kennedy Center Honors, Fauci wrote that he hugged Hunter Biden, who joked the internet "would explode" if someone photographed them together because they were both "being attacked by the far right GOP."

Cash-strapped DNC shelled out more than $800K to non-voting territories like Virgin Islands while in debt

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) entered the final 100 days before the midterm elections Sunday at its Washington headquarters with debts exceeding cash by more than $2 million and no plans for its customary transfers to congressional campaign committees, after an early-spending strategy raised questions about support for House candidates in decisive swing districts.

Federal Election Commission filings showed the DNC ended June with $16.3 million in cash and $18.5 million in debts, leaving liabilities approximately $2.2 million above its reserves. The Republican National Committee (RNC), by comparison, reported approximately $128.5 million on-hand and no outstanding debt.

The New York Times reported that the DNC had asked vendors to delay spending bills until after the elections and informed congressional leaders it would not make its traditional transfers to the House and Senate campaign committees.

The New York Times also noted that the DNC and an affiliated committee spent approximately $840,000 on Democratic organizations in five non-voting U.S. territories since last year.

Veteran DNC member Donna Brazile told The New York Times that DNC Chairman Ken Martin needed major assistance.

"Ken needs help — H-E-L-P," Brazile said. "And if he’s reluctant to say it, I’m here to help him ask. It’s hard. It’s very difficult."

The cash disparity extends to the committees directing resources into House races. The National Republican Congressional Committee ended June with $92.7 million, compared with $79 million for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Axios reported.

A recent Supreme Court decision allowing unlimited coordinated spending between parties and candidates made committee reserves more consequential in competitive districts. Control of the House could turn on fewer than 20 races, according to The Associated Press.

Despite the cash gap, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) Chair Suzan DelBene pointed to the committee's second-quarter fundraising and the performance of Democratic candidates.

"The DCCC's strong quarter of fundraising combined with the incredible results of our Frontliners and challengers show that across the battlefield," DelBene said, in a July press release. In a statement to Fox News Digital, DNC Executive Director Roger Lau disputed the characterization of the vendor discussions as evidence of financial distress.

"This is nothing more than standard negotiations with vendors over contracts and payment processes," Lau said.

Democrats are trying to win back control of the House for the first time since Republicans re-gained the majority in 2022. Republicans also control the U.S. Senate after winning the majority in 2024.

Midterm elections are historically difficult for the party of the incumbent president. President Joe Biden's Democrats overperformed expectations in 2022 and held onto Senate control, but still lost the House. President Donald Trump's Republicans lost the House in 2018, his first midterm, and President Barack Obama's Democrats were routed in both his midterms as well, losing the Senate in 2014 and the House in 2010.

The DNC said its territorial spending was part of a four-year State Partnership Program that transfers more than $1 million per month to 57 Democratic state and territorial parties. Each party receives $17,500 monthly, while parties in Republican-controlled states receive an additional $5,000 through the DNC’s Red State Fund. State parties also receive six figures’ worth of voter data and technology annually.

The agreement also provides for six regional training boot camps during each two-year cycle and five new regional directors.

Martin said last week that the investment reflected his strategy of moving resources beyond Washington and strengthening local party organizations.

"The current DNC has raised the most money of any DNC without the White House in the 198-year history of the Democratic Party," Martin said in a Substack post on Monday. "If the question is whether the Democratic Party will be ready to win — everywhere, at every level, in this election and for the decade ahead — the answer is a resounding yes."

The committee's financial position received additional scrutiny Sunday when digital news publication NOTUS reported that the DNC used its headquarters as collateral for a $15 million credit line. A DNC official said the building had also secured credit lines in several previous election cycles.

"This is not new," the official said. "The loan documents were publicly released in November, and the DNC’s building was also used as collateral in our prior lines of credit in 2019, 2018, 2014, and many other years."

The U.K.'s new defense secretary said Sunday that Europe will ultimately thank President Donald Trump for waking up the continent from its complacency and forcing NATO allies to take responsibility for their own security.

Speaking on Sky News, Wes Streeting also signaled a rebalancing of the U.K. government's transatlantic stance under new Prime Minister Andy Burnham while stating that Britain continued to refuse to back U.S. offensive military action against Iran.

"The first thing you do is you don't suck up, and… my impression is President Trump, his administration… that's not what they're looking for, actually," Streeting told Sky News anchor Trevor Phillips, stating his perspective on Washington.

"He's a straight talker. He says what he means and means what he says."

"I don't know him, but I do trust the United States," he added.

Streeting took charge of the U.K. Ministry of Defence on July 20, the same day Burnham became prime minister.

"I've not even been in the job a week. I've always been aware that the alliance between the U.S. and the U.K. is unlike any in the world, and of course, that's historic, it's cultural, it's political," Streeting said. "It's driven by self-interest as well as mutual shared interests."

During his first week in office, Streeting also had a call with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to discuss maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and broader NATO commitments.

"But just in my first week as defense secretary, I have had a unique insight into just how close and integral that relationship is when it comes to defense and security," Streeting explained.

"But there are plenty of things that we can and should do together when it comes to securing the Strait of Hormuz, in making sure that Iran doesn't develop nuclear weapons, in terms of investing in our capability and NATO's capability."

Trump has long criticized European NATO members for failing to spend enough on defense, arguing they should shoulder a greater share of the alliance's security burden.

Popular children's YouTube educator "Ms. Rachel" faced criticism Sunday after a federal filing showed she gave $3,000 to Abdul El-Sayed's Michigan Senate campaign, supporting the progressive Democrat in a nationally watched primary increasingly divided over Israel.

The donation prompted National Republican Senatorial Committee spokeswoman Samantha Cantrell to warn parents about both figures, The New York Post reported.

"Abdul El-Sayed and Ms. Rachel are one and the same, forcing their socialist, they/them, anti-America agenda on our children," Cantrell told The New York Post. "Parents should be worried when they head to the ballot box."

Rachel Griffin Accurso, who produces children's content under the name, "Ms. Rachel," was listed in a Federal Election Commission 48-hour notice dated July 19, according to the New York Post. The filing did not make clear whether the payment was a contribution or a loan.

The transaction connected Accurso, whose YouTube channel has more than 20 million subscribers, to El-Sayed, who has called for an arms embargo against Israel and accused the country of genocide in Gaza.

El-Sayed, who is backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., was asked during a July appearance on "Inside Politics Sunday" whether the United States should designate the Israeli government as a foreign terrorist organization.

When Fox News host Will Cain pressed El-Sayed about their association in May, the candidate rejected the suggestion that campaigning with Piker meant endorsing all his remarks.

"Because he said something one time, you think I automatically believe that," El-Sayed said.

Accurso has kept her Gaza advocacy largely separate from her children’s programming. During an August PBS NewsHour interview, she defended speaking publicly about Palestinian children while responding to accusations that her advocacy promoted anti-Israel messaging.

"I think it’s sad to take someone’s dedication and love for all children and try and make that wrong," Accurso said.

Accurso previously gave $3,500 each to Brad Lander and Darializa Avila Chevalier, two congressional candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani who defeated Democratic incumbents in June, the New York Post reported.

Accurso's husband, Aron Accurso, also gave $1,500 to Chevalier, according to FEC records.

The YouTuber has increasingly entered politics beyond campaign contributions. She told NBC News in March that she was working with lawyers and activists to close the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in South Texas after accusing the facility of "neglect and child abuse," Fox News Digital reported.

She embraced the political label during the interview while explaining her immigration advocacy.

"I am political," Accurso said. "It’s political to believe that children are worthy of love and care, and that every child is equal, and that our care shouldn’t stop at what we look like, our family, at our religion, at a border."

CoreCivic, which operates the Dilley facility, disputed Accurso’s allegations in a statement to Fox News Digital, saying it provides families with "safe, humane and compassionate care."

Accurso continued her immigration advocacy in June by meeting with families outside the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, before traveling to Washington with letters and drawings from children in ICE custody to urge lawmakers to end family detention, according to The Washington Post.

The alcohol industry has long relied on young adults eventually becoming regular drinkers. Now, Gen Z is forcing the industry to shift as they embrace "sober-curious" lifestyles and search for quality beverages.

A 2025 Gallup poll found that the percentage of U.S. adults who said that they consume alcohol fell to 54%, the lowest rate in the 90 years it had been tracking. From 1997 to 2023, Gallup found that at least 60% of Americans reported drinking alcohol. The figure fell to 58% in 2024 and again to 54% in 2025.

The alcohol industry faces a new challenge. Rather than simply getting young adults to become lifelong customers, they now must convince them that their product is worth the price.

GEN Z STILL DRINKS, JUST EARLIER AS THE 'DAYCAP' TREND BEGINS UPENDING NIGHTLIFE

Ryan Close, the CEO and founder of Bartesian, said he is seeing consumers choose quality over quantity. He said they are not looking to consume more or less alcohol, but rather they're searching for better and higher-quality beverage options.

"I'm not gonna argue with the data, you know, they probably are drinking less alcohol. I think they're drinking less, but with the expectation that 'I want better,'" he told Fox News Digital, regarding Gen Z's drinking habits.

Bartesian makes an automated at-home cocktail machine that allows users to create bar-style cocktails by inserting flavor capsules and adding their own spirits.

Close told Fox News Digital that before starting Bartesian, he noticed people were mostly drinking wine and beer at home, despite ordering cocktails while out at bars and restaurants. He said many found cocktails to be too difficult and that they did not want to gather all the necessary bitters and other ingredients. Despite having years of bartending experience, Close struggled to make a classic cocktail: the Old Fashioned, a flavor that is available in Bartesian pods.

Close said that his company was built around the idea that consumers wanted premium cocktails at home that are made with good ingredients.

"We only use real ingredients so we're not putting anything artificial, no artificial colors or flavors in the cocktails, so, you're just getting that true quality freshness," he said.

HIGH-ALCOHOL, READY-TO-DRINK COCKTAILS SPARK OVERCONSUMPTION CONCERNS FOR GEN Z DRINKERS

Industry research suggests Close is not the only one noticing the shift toward a search for quality. In a Jan. 2 report outlining five consumer trends shaping the alcohol industry, NielsenIQ (NIQ) identified a similar pattern among drinkers. NIQ found that 67% of spirits drinkers and around half (52%) of average drinkers said they would be willing to pay more for higher quality drinks. Though NIQ's report looked at on-premises patterns, not at-home drinking.

Close believes the shift is going beyond what consumers drink and expanding to why they're drinking in the first place. He argued that Gen Z consumers are not looking to "drink for the sake of drinking," but are instead seeking to have a shared experience. Bartesian not only allows users to pick different flavors of cocktails, but also what kind of spirits and how much alcohol goes into the drinks, something Close said leans into this idea of wanting an experience.

"I just think the younger generation is more intentional and it's not about, 'Hey, I don't wanna drink at all,' it's, 'I wanna drink better, less often, and more quality,'" Close told Fox News Digital.

Many older Gen Z consumers turned 21 during the COVID-19 pandemic, as restaurants and bars across the country were closed or operating under tight restrictions. Close said he believes younger consumers are increasingly viewing the home as "an extension of restaurants and bars," creating a demand for premium at-home cocktail experiences.

Close said rising cocktail prices have only accelerated that shift, as consumers become more selective about how they spend their money. He recalled that during a recent trip to New York City, he found himself paying around $24 for a martini that was missing a key ingredient — blue cheese olives.

"I'm not looking to spend $75 on martinis when I know — especially without the blue cheese — when I can go home and make that exact same cocktail for $3 or $4," he said.

The trend, according to Close, is not about replacing bars and restaurants altogether, but rather meeting consumer demand who are more deliberate about what they drink, where they drink it and the value of experiences.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to dramatically ramp up operations to locate and arrest Haitian nationals whose Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is expected to end imminently, multiple federal sources told Fox News.

The expanded operation is expected to begin as soon as this week.

The Supreme Court’s certified judgment is expected to be transmitted to the lower courts Monday, clearing the way for the Trump administration to proceed with ending TPS for more than 300,000 Haitians.

Federal sources told Fox News that Ohio will be heavily targeted because Springfield, Ohio, has a large Haitian population. ICE leadership has been notified of the operational plans, the sources said.

Last month, the Supreme Court reversed lower-court judgments that had postponed the administration’s TPS terminations for Haiti and Syria while litigation continued.

TPS was first granted to Haiti following the country's devastating 2010 earthquake. The designation allows eligible foreign nationals from countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disasters or other extraordinary conditions to temporarily live and work legally in the United States.

The anticipated enforcement operation follows the Trump administration's long-running effort to end Haiti's TPS designation, arguing that the program was never intended to become a permanent form of legal status.

Following the Supreme Court's decision, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson called the ruling "a tremendous win" for the administration.

"Today, the Supreme Court affirmed what President Trump has always maintained: temporary protected status is, by definition, temporary. It was never intended to be a pathway to permanent status or legal residency," Jackson told Fox News Digital. "The Trump Administration continues to lawfully end the egregious abuses to our immigration system that have hurt Americans for years."

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) General Counsel James Percival also praised the ruling in a post on X.

"The Court vindicates DHS yet again," Percival wrote. "The T in TPS stands for TEMPORARY, yet many of these designations became de facto amnesty. This is a win for the rule of law and common sense."

Skipping sleep may pack on pounds faster than you think, new study finds

Regularly cutting back on sleep could cause the number on the scale to creep up, according to new research.

A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that adults who got about 90 minutes less sleep each night for six weeks gained roughly one pound on average compared with periods when they got enough rest.

Researchers at Columbia University Irving Medical Center studied 95 adults who were already at risk for heart or metabolic disease, comparing six weeks of adequate sleep with six weeks of cutting about 90 minutes of sleep each night.

By the end of the sleep-restricted phase, participants weighed about one pound more on average and had slightly larger waistlines. They also spent more time sitting, although their levels of moderate and vigorous exercise remained about the same.

While participants gained weight, researchers did not detect significant changes in body fat or muscle mass. They also did not track how much participants ate, so it's unclear what drove the increase.

Dr. Somi Javaid, an Ohio-based OB-GYN and founder of HerMD who was not involved in the study, told Fox News Digital that sleep plays an important role in regulating the body's metabolism.

Javaid said chronic sleep deprivation can make it harder for the body to regulate weight, but noted that women going through menopause may be especially vulnerable because sleep problems become more common during that stage of life.

"We are destroying women's sleep at the exact life stage when their metabolism is [the] least able to absorb the hit, then telling them to eat less and exercise more," Javaid said.

She added that the American Heart Association now recognizes sleep as one of its "Life's Essential 8" for heart health and recommends adults get seven to nine hours of sleep each night.

"Chronic short sleep is not a lifestyle quirk," Javaid said. "We need to treat sleep as a vital sign of health."

While the findings suggest regularly getting less sleep may contribute to weight gain, the researchers noted several limitations of the study.

They said the six-week study may not have been long enough to detect meaningful changes in body fat, which can take longer to develop than changes in body weight.

The researchers also noted that the study's relatively small sample size limited their ability to compare results among different groups of participants. In addition, some hormone measurements were collected only in the morning and may not have reflected fluctuations that occur throughout the day.

Cardinals end Jacoby Brissett contract dispute with deal worth up to $21M for 2026 season: reports

The pay raise quarterback Jacoby Brissett was looking for was finally given to him by the Arizona Cardinals.

Unlike most hold-ins/hold-outs, Brissett wasn’t looking for a new extension from his club, but rather a raise heading into the 2026 NFL season where he figures to be the starting quarterback. He was set to make $4.88 million as his base salary.

Now, Brissett is set to make $15.5 million in base pay for 2026, according to multiple reports. The new 2026 contract could also get up to $21 million with incentives.

This stalemate between the journeyman quarterback and the Cardinals sparked some debate over whether it was even right that Brissett was asking for a raise.

But following the release of Kyler Murray , who eventually signed with the Minnesota Vikings, Brissett was in line to be a starter, and he wished to be paid accordingly. His new deal isn’t remotely close to top starter money, however, Brissett appears happy to finally get to common ground.

Brissett chose not to participate in the Cardinals’ spring workouts, though he did report to training camp on time. Because of the latter decision, it was expected he and the Cardinals would reach a deal soon.

It’s yet another regime change for the Cardinals, with Mike LaFleur assuming the head coach role left vacant after the firing of Jonathan Gannon. Brissett sits atop the depth chart after the Murray cut, while Arizona drafted Miami quarterback Carson Beck and signed Gardner Minshew II for competition at training camp.

Brissett took over starting duties during the 2025 season after Murray suffered a foot injury. It wasn’t soon before Brissett was operating the Cardinals’ offense more efficiently than his injured teammate, with players like tight end Trey McBride and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. seeing an uptick in their own stat lines.

Brissett is scheduled for free agency after this season, but perhaps he can remain in good favor with the Cardinals with another good year. The offense around him was also bolstered, especially with Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love being drafted third overall back in April.

Brissett has been working out with his teammates to begin training camp, including newcomers like Love, but he hasn’t been participating in 11-on-11 sessions of practice. That should change now after the raise agreement.

But the pay raise doesn’t necessarily mean Brissett is guaranteed the starting role come Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers. He will have to earn that spot over Minshew and Beck, though he has the rapport necessary with the team’s top pass game options to think he will do just that.
