AI backlash reaches major university with bold ban on laptops and phones for law students

A major university is taking aim at tech in a sweeping ban against electronic devices in an effort to "ensure students actually learn to think critically, strategically and independently without relying on AI," according to administrators.

The University of Chicago has issued a ban on first-year law students using phones, tablets and laptops in class, a statement released by school administrators said Thursday.

The ban is set to take effect this fall, with university officials saying the rule will combat the use of artificial intelligence in the classroom.

"With AI disrupting higher education, our commitment to rigorous legal education also must mean openness to even rapid adaptation," the statement said. "A willingness to rethink our practices is consistent with our law school’s long history of innovation."

According to the statement, administrators have worked throughout the past year to determine the best way to adopt AI within their curriculum and campus policies, and have sought feedback from the community, students, faculty, law firm leaders and legal technology executives.

"The feedback we have received throughout this process has been consistent," they added. "We need to ensure that our students actually learn to think critically, strategically, and independently without relying on AI; but we also must face the reality that AI tools are already widely available to our students, and our graduates will be expected to be prepared to use them in legal practice."

A PROGRESSIVE POPE TAKES AIM AT AI AND RISKS KILLING ITS MIRACLES

The school has opted to launch a "strategic vision" that encompasses three themes, in which students and faculty will "develop AI-resilient pedagogy and assessment," promote "essential human" skills that distinguish excellent lawyers" and teach "responsible, effective, and ethical use of AI."

Under the newly announced strategy, first-year law students will be barred from utilizing electronic devices in the classroom, and professors instead will designate "classroom scribes" to take notes for the group.

Professors are also granted authority to determine when electronic devices can be used "for specific tech-enabled activities," such as "in-class polling."

School administrators have also determined that students will be required to conduct legal research and writing assignments while using AI as a tool – but cannot use the technology to write the materials for them.

Any use of AI to complete assignments will be reviewed by faculty, with the school also offering upper-level elective courses specializing in the adoption of AI in the legal field and the adaptation of AI tools for work in the legal field.

"It is simply unrealistic to think that students and lawyers will not use AI," the statement said. "But legal technology is changing rapidly, and there is no guarantee that the specific AI tools or techniques that are ascendant today will be useful when current students enter practice. Thus, AI skills training requires more than producing students who can use the tools that are currently part of legal practice."

Florida Gators: Aaron Philo vs. Tramell Jones

First-year Florida coach Jon Sumrall may have inherited a team with a 4-8 record in 2025, but the wins and losses belie just how much talent was left on this roster.

The Gators boast one of the best running backs in the country in Jadan Baugh and will likely be in the conversation for best wide receiver unit in the SEC by mid-season.

The problem is that no one in Gainesville knows who will be throwing all those weapons the football come Sept. 5, not even Sumrall himself.

Will it be Aaron Philo, the Georgia Tech transfer who followed offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner south on I-75?

Or will incumbent backup Tramell Jones take that next step and wrestle the starting role away from him?

Jones has the higher ceiling and the bigger arm, but Philo has the familiarity in Faulkner's system and is a bit savvier as a runner.

That last detail could be the difference, as Florida's offensive line continues to be a question mark heading into 2026.

Based on everything coming out of the football facility in Florida, this is a battle that will likely continue into the start of the season, as the Gators open up with presumptive pushovers FAU and Campbell before a trip to Auburn in week three.

Whoever impresses in the first two "cupcake" games will likely be the starter when Florida travels to Jordan-Hare on Sept. 19.

Clemson Tigers: Christopher Vizzina vs. Tait Reynolds

Much like with Alabama, the Clemson Tigers have a quarterback conundrum on their hands in trying to decide between a veteran who has waited his turn and a talented freshman looking to take the job by force.

Coach Dabo Swinney has made it abundantly clear that the job is Vizzina's to lose, but Reynolds may have taken that a little too literally.

He may not have the recruiting pedigree that Keelon Russell had, having been rated a three-star in the 2026 cycle, but Reynolds has the size and playmaking ability that could be the difference in the QB competition.

Vizzina's seniority and passing pedigree could and should give him the edge, especially with a week one matchup against the LSU Tigers looming, but if Clemson and Swinney need a spark to save their season, they could turn to the dynamic, dual-sport athlete to lead the charge.

One factor that could help Vizzina's case is the wide receiver room, which could be argued as one of the best in the nation, returning a dynamite duo in Bryant Wesco Jr. and T.J. Moore.

His familiarity with those two can't be overstated, though it's worth noting that both quarterbacks will be dealing with a new offensive coordinator, as Chad Morris finds his way back to Clemson to replace Garrett Riley.

Unlike Alabama and Florida, the Tigers don't have any time to waste in deciding who will start, given the aforementioned showdown with LSU waiting for them to start the season.

California man picks up explosive device on a beach during July 4 cleanup, loses hand

A man lost his hand when an explosive device detonated as he was cleaning up Fourth of July fireworks debris on a beach in Northern California.

On Sunday, Jason Turner and his girlfriend, Pamala, were walking along Point St. George Beach in Del Norte County intending to pick up trash, according to a GoFundMe set up by his daughter Ashley Turner.

According to the online fundraiser, Turner picked up a "a bomb-like device that unexpectedly went off."

Pamala told CBS News Sacramento that she used her shirt as a tourniquet to stop Turner's bleeding before first responders arrived.

The Del Norte County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on social media that their deputies responded to reports of an explosion at the beach. When they arrived, they found Turner in the parking lot with a "significant injury to his hand."

Ashley Turner said her father had to have his hand amputated and is waiting to undergo more surgeries. He is also dealing with vision and hearing loss as a result of the explosion, according to the GoFundMe.

"My dad will be going into additional surgeries for his eyes. He has metal fragments stuck in his eyes," Ashley Turner wrote in a Wednesday update. "His right ear drum is blown and he has no hearing out of it."

The fundraiser also explained that Turner is the sole provider for his family of seven, and two of his children are still in school.

As of Friday afternoon, nearly $100,000 has been raised to help with Turner's ongoing medical costs. His daughter said his injuries may be permanent.

The Del Norte County Sheriff's Office searched the beach and launched an investigation into what caused the explosion.

He made the comments during an interview on "Deseret Voices" after host McKay Coppins jokingly asked Romney whether he would run for president in 2028.

Romney indicated he "would love" to run again, adding, "and this time I might get it right. You know, third time's a charm."

Coppins said, "80 isn't what it used to be."

Federal appeals court upholds controversial Illinois ban on semiautomatic guns

A federal appeals court upheld a controversial Illinois gun control law that largely bans assault weapons.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit decision issued on Thursday slapped down a district court decision that declared the ban unconstitutional.

"Among other things, the Act criminalizes the manufacture, sale, delivery, purchase, and possession of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines. A grandfather clause permits preexisting lawful owners of the regulated items to continue possessing them," the Thursday decision noted.

US JUDGE TOSSES ILLINOIS' BAN ON SEMIAUTOMATIC WEAPONS, GOVERNOR PLEDGES SWIFT APPEAL

"For reasons that follow, we focus on the Act’s application to AR-15s and thirty-round rifle magazines. The Act’s restrictions on these items, we hold, are consistent with the principles that underpin our Nation’s tradition of firearm regulation. Whether to adopt them is thus a decision reposed in our elected representatives, and we reverse," the decision declared.

Chief Judge Michael Brennan dissented from the panel's decision.

"Our Nation’s enduring traditions forbid governments from prohibiting firearms commonly owned for self-defense. Because the people have overwhelmingly chosen the AR-15 rifle and its magazine as their weapon of choice, they are protected by the Second Amendment," Brennan wrote.

"Illinois’s ban goes too far and should be enjoined as unconstitutional. I respectfully dissent," he noted.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a Democrat who signed the controversial law in early 2023, hailed the court's decision.

State Attorney General Kwame Raoul also celebrated the decision.

"This is a win that enhances public safety in Illinois. We have seen the damage that assault weapons and large-capacity magazines can inflict, and these weapons of war have no place in our communities," he said in a Thursday statement. "My office has successfully defended the state’s prohibition on these weapons in both state and federal court, and I am immensely proud of the hardworking attorneys in my office who have worked diligently to preserve this critical public safety measure."

For many liberal sports reporters, who make up the vast majority of sports media, unfortunately, the worst thing a championship team can do is visit the Trump White House.

On Thursday, LA times long-time reporter, Bill Plaschke, called the Los Angeles Dodgers "tone deaf," and considered them accepting the invitation to the White House to celebrate their World Series championship, "an insult to their fans."

From the outset of this virtue signaling piece, Plaschke paints accepting the invitation as an insult to the Dodgers' largely Hispanic fan base.

"… why in the hell do they insist on embracing the person trying to tear this city apart?"

No, he’s not talking about Karren Bass. No, he’s not talking about Gavin Newsom. He’s claiming that President Trump is the one responsible for the list of issues that the city of Los Angeles faces. Bill, you’re in denial.

He went on to state how multiple teams across multiple leagues, have refused to celebrate their championships at the White House while Donald Trump is in the Oval Office.

"The 2017 NBA champion Golden State Warriors wouldn’t go. The 2018 Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles wouldn’t go. The 2025 NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder wouldn’t go.

And now this group of Dodgers are going twice?"

And as I, and many of you rational, America-loving readers might have expected, Plaschke reached his inevitable conclusion. He claimed the Dodgers visiting the White House is an "insult to their fans" because President Donald Trump is actively deporting illegal immigrants.

"But what happened two months after that first visit altered even that flimsy bit of logic," Plaschke said while responding to Dodgers officials, claiming that visiting the White House was simply showing respect for the country, the presidency, and not an endorsement of Trump.

"The man inhabiting the office rained terror on Los Angeles with the midsomer ICE raids that changed the lives of thousands."

"Many impacted were the Dodgers fans, who filled the stadium every night for the team with arguably the largest immigrant fan base in sports."

Plaschke then went into further detail, trying to shame the organization for not immediately condemning the raids like other pro sports teams in town.

Ironically, he tries to condemn the organization and its players as some sort of political puppets, claiming that they are "serving as a cheap Trump photo op," so they can honor "a man whose policies have a ravage their fans more than any other group in America."

If anybody is a political pawn, holding water for a political party and its politicians, it’s Plaschke.

Also, funny enough, I couldn't find any evidence that Plaschke was critical of Golden State Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr and point guard Steph Curry endorsing Kamala Harris for president at the 2024 Democratic National Convention. Interesting. Liberal players and coaches can do what they want, even blatantly endorse political candidates, but heaven forbid a team accepts the honor for American people and the current administration to recognize and honor their championship achievement.

Easily the most idiotic claim from Plaschke throughout this lecture disguised as an article, was invoking the name of Dodgers' legend Jackie Robinson:

"An organization cannot boast of sharing a uniform with Jackie Robinson while sharing a very public afternoon with President Trump."

In my opinion, without saying it plainly, Plaschke is claiming that the Dodgers attending the White House are somehow supporting racism. It seems to me, making this asinine correlation is at very least, insinuating that President Trump and his administrations ideologies and policies would align with the racists that didn’t support Jackie Robinson and Black players in playing Major League Baseball. That’s inflammatory, unfounded nonsense.

Deporting illegal immigrants is not racist. It’s good policy. It’s what Barack Obama did, even at a grander scale.

Plaschke also stated it "doesn’t compute" that the Dodgers, who he claims "pioneer[ed] LGBTQ+ Pride Night" even "against the wishes of a conservative clubhouse" would normalize "the morality of President Trump" by attending the White House.

Imagine how lost in your liberal worldview you have to be to claim moral superiority, while promoting and defending LGBTQ+ Pride Night, which the Dodgers organization has used to insult Christians and Catholics, many of which make up their fan base.

As he wrapped up his lengthy liberal diatribe, Plaschke pleaded with the organization saying, "It’s not too late. The Dodgers still have time to change their minds and do the right thing." He claimed that the Dodgers should skip the visit for "common human decency."

In his final statements, Plaschke took one more shot at President Trump and went as far as calling the team "losers" if they went through with their visit to the White House.

"The president has treated the Dodgers fans with a careless disregard for their basic community, and the Dodgers need to let him know that is not OK…

Yeah, sure, in two weeks they could threat into the most celebrated residence in America as two time defending champions.

But they would leave as two-time losers."

Bill, maybe you’re the one that is tone-deaf.

Your profession is full of woke, intolerant, hypocritical, delusional, left-wing, political activists, and useful idiots, who think skipping the White House is somehow brave and powerful. It’s the opposite.

The Los Angeles Dodgers organization is correct when they say that visiting the White House is not an endorsement of the man that holds the office.

Platner collapse completes John Fetterman’s break from Sanders socialists who put him in Senate

Graham Platner’s political collapse did more than derail a scandal-plagued Senate campaign in Maine. It also completed Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman’s public transformation from a Bernie Sanders-backed progressive populist to one of the left’s most aggressive internal critics.

Fetterman was among the first prominent Democrats to call out Platner's mounting controversies, even as many party leaders continued backing the scandal-plagued candidate until a former girlfriend publicly accused Platner of rape, an allegation he denies. The accusation prompted the remaining pillars of Democratic support to collapse.

By Wednesday night, Fetterman laid into his onetime political ally Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., in an interview with Fox News’ Charles Hurt on "Jesse Watters Primetime."

"The trash took itself out," Fetterman said of Platner’s withdrawal, as Hurt asked who should be held most responsible for the Platner chaos.

"Absolutely, Bernie Sanders needs to apologize to the voters of Maine and to everyone that donated to that train wreck of a campaign," Fetterman said.

Sanders ultimately called on Platner to end his candidacy after the allegation surfaced, but Fetterman argued the Vermont progressive owed voters an apology for helping elevate him in the first place.

"More than anyone, he pushed ‘P. Hustle’ into the election. And now he keeps pushing these Communists and these kinds of awful, anti-American people."

Fox News Digital reached out to Sanders, Fetterman and Platner's campaign for comment.

The comments cap a remarkable political evolution for Fetterman, who recently acknowledged he is more popular with some Republicans than his own party.

"For some strange [reason], I am more popular with Republicans, which is confusing because I vote in the 90-[percentile] Dem-line," Fetterman told NewsNation in March, adding that he supports Israel and President Donald Trump’s "Operation: Epic Fury" against Iran.

Chris Borick, a professor at Lehigh University and former president of the Pennsylvania Political Science Association, called Fetterman's change in relationship with Sanders and the Democrats' progressive wing "dramatic."

"As someone that follows Pennsylvania politics, I can't find anything even close in comparison to the shifts that we've seen in Fetterman's positions on an array of matters over a short period of time," Borick said. "We've seen people switch parties, like Arlen Specter... but in terms of a quick departure on the most significant levels, Fetterman's changes are without precedent in the state."

Fetterman’s break with the left has not been limited to Sanders-world. In Pennsylvania, his increasingly independent posture has also put distance between him and parts of the state Democratic establishment, including breaking some partisan norms.

State Sen. Doug Mastriano, R-Gettysburg, who served in the Pennsylvania Senate while Fetterman was lieutenant governor and presided over the chamber, said the Democrat had "political differences" with him but was typically "gracious and respectful."

He spoke of an interaction on the Harrisburg Senate floor when Fetterman learned Mastriano accrued a record number of ballot signatures to qualify to run for governor against then-Attorney General Josh Shapiro.

"Senator Fetterman came down from the rostrum, congratulated me, and said, 'Doug, 30,000. That's really impressive. Great job.' It wasn't something he had to do," Mastriano told Fox News Digital.

"I can't speak for Sen. Fetterman's political evolution — that's something only he can explain. But I do respect anyone who is willing to speak their mind, think independently, and put what they believe to be America's interests first, even when doing so may not be popular within their own party," said Mastriano, who said Fetterman appears to be "put[ting] Pennsylvania ahead of politics."

Fetterman recently upstaged his home state’s Democratic standard-bearer, Gov. Josh Shapiro, by teaming up with Republican Sen. David McCormick to help secure a booth on the National Mall for the Great American State Fair after the governor’s office said there was too little time and too little vendor interest to assemble one.

Shapiro’s predecessor, Gov. Tom Wolf, with whom Fetterman served as lieutenant governor during Wolf’s second term, also appeared to have no love lost for his party’s new maverick.

"I have thoughts, but I don’t have to share them anymore," Wolf, who has largely retired from public life, said in March of Fetterman’s job performance.

When the two were in office in Harrisburg, Fetterman was closely aligned with Sanders and rode a wave of progressive populism to the lieutenant governor’s office — which is a separate primary-ballot line from the governorship.

Sam Chen, a Pennsylvania political analyst and chief strategist at the Allentown-based Liddell Group, told Fox News Digital that Fetterman’s evolution from Sanders ally to critic is a significant one while questioning whether the Democratic Party’s political environment helped cause the break.

"Fetterman was really helped by Sanders — even in Fetterman's first Senate run … and then against who we really thought was probably the frontrunner in Conor Lamb."

"Sanders really helped put Fetterman on the map and helped get him over the top," Chen said, calling the senator's recent condemnation of Sanders his "biggest break" with the progressive wing.

However, Chen questioned whether Fetterman’s break with Sanders over Platner was less about policy than about judgment, character and candidate quality.

"I wonder if Fetterman would have had this position if Platner had all his policy views that he has now but there was no Totenkopf tattoo or allegations from women."

During his 2018 lieutenant governor campaign, Fetterman touted Sanders’ endorsement as proof of his progressive bona fides, describing the Vermont senator as one of the few national politicians who had the "little guy’s" back. Fetterman was then still mayor of postindustrial Braddock, a working-class suburb outside Pittsburgh, but his populist profile was already drawing national attention.

Sanders in turn came to Pennsylvania to endorse Fetterman: "What John’s campaign is about … is that we are going to transform this country and create a government that works for all of us, not just wealthy campaign contributors," he said, according to PBS’ Philadelphia affiliate.

Since his election to the Senate, Pennsylvania Democratic groups, including the Monroe County Democratic Party in the Poconos, have branded him a "traitor," while Punchbowl described his current political standing as "tenuous" and reported that no member of the Keystone State’s House delegation would confirm support for a 2028 reelection bid.

"Squad" member Rep. Summer Lee, who represents Fetterman's hometown and is more ideologically aligned with Sanders, told the outlet the increasingly isolated senator would run "at his own peril."

Chen said Fetterman's progressive "bona fides" remain, noting he still is reliably liberal on LGBTQ rights, marijuana and abortion — adding that as mayor or lieutenant governor, foreign policy positions were a nonfactor. Still, he argued, the fight over Platner shows how far Fetterman has moved from the progressive coalition that launched him into national politics.

EXCLUSIVE: The Interior and Commerce Departments are scrapping a sweeping Endangered Species Act (ESA) rule that officials say past administrations "weaponized" to block energy production, logging, infrastructure projects and private citizens' land use.

Officials pointed to several ESA-listed species they say triggered undue or burdensome restrictions by treating habitat modification as potential "harm" to protected species, purportedly expanding the ESA's "harm" provision.

"For years, federal agencies abused the ESA to obstruct lawful land use and burden American families and businesses," Interior Secretary Doug Burgum told Fox News Digital.

"That approach turned routine activity into a regulatory trap, drove up costs that impacted people’s lives, and expanded federal authority beyond what Congress intended."

On Friday, the Interior and Commerce Departments announced they are rescinding the 'outdated' regulatory definition of 'harm' and returning the Endangered Species Act's interpretation to its original intent to end years of federal overreach.

The administration is relying in part on the Supreme Court’s 2024 decision in Loper Bright v. Raimondo, which overturned "Chevron deference" and held that courts must use independent judgment when interpreting federal statutes rather than deferring to an agency’s preferred reading of ambiguous law.

The rule change therefore aims to align regulations with the "single best" meaning of a statute rather than letting it be "contort[ed] to fit a political agenda," officials said.

Officials pointed to the dunes sagebrush lizard, which the Biden administration listed as endangered in 2024, as an example of what they view as speculative habitat-based restrictions.

Officials argued the change led to unnecessary restrictions on energy projects in Texas’ lucrative Permian Basin, most recently depicted in the acclaimed Billy Bob Thornton series "Landman."

Under Section 9 of the ESA, it is unlawful to "take" endangered wildlife, a term Congress defined to include actions such as harming, harassing, wounding or killing protected species.

Federal materials tied the species’ decline to surface-disturbing activities, including energy development and sand mining, which officials and industry representatives say can trigger costly permitting and compliance burdens.

Officials also cited the lesser prairie-chicken, a grassland bird whose federal protections have drawn opposition from farmers, ranchers and energy developers across New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado.

The fight over habitat-based "harm" dates back decades, including the northern spotted owl, whose 1990 ESA listing fueled a long-running battle over timber harvesting in the Pacific Northwest and was blamed for job losses.

A 2021 study in the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management estimated the owl’s ESA listing reduced timber employment by roughly 16,000 to 32,000 jobs in the Pacific Northwest and northern California.

Timber interests and landowners challenged the federal definition, arguing that "harm" should cover direct injury to wildlife, not habitat modification that indirectly affects a species.

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Clinton Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt in 1995, upholding a definition of "harm" that included significant habitat modification when it actually kills or injures protected wildlife.

Officials say the change is designed to narrow the regulation after Loper Bright and prevent agencies from using habitat-based theories to block lawful activity far beyond what Congress authorized.

The agencies argued the previously broadened definition of "harm" became an unlawful intrusion on private property rights.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick added that fishermen in particular have been burdened by the regulation for "too long."

Returning the ESA to its original purpose protects both the environment and economic development, Lutnick said.

Administration officials stressed that core ESA protections remain in place, including prohibitions on directly injuring or killing protected wildlife.

The administration said the change is intended to reduce permitting and compliance costs while providing greater legal clarity for landowners, energy producers and developers, advancing President Donald Trump's vision of domestic energy dominance and a regulatory state that works for, not against, the average American.

Norway World Cup team switches hotels in Florida after noise complaints: 'We must move'

Ahead of the biggest soccer match in the country's history, Norway had to make some last-minute logistical changes.

Norway is set to face England for a spot in the World Cup semifinals at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens on Saturday, but the Norway players apparently were not getting much rest.

According to The Independent, players requested a hotel change due to "noise and disruption from the road outside their original hotel as well as a nearby construction site."

The team had been staying at the Dalmar Hotel in Fort Lauderdale but has now moved to a hotel even closer to the stadium.

"It is brutal having to move, but we are satisfied with the new place and everyone is happy now," a team rep told Fox News Digital.

"Some people might fear that this will affect the players, but it was the players who wanted this more than anyone else. We have strong people in our support team and managed to move in two-and-a-half hours. The process of changing hotel is not ideal, but we wanted to take action as soon as possible. Having a good atmosphere is most important.

"We are going to stay for a week in Miami, and we have now been for six weeks in the United States and we are going to play in the biggest match in Norwegian history. We have avoided cabin fever so far and don’t want any risk of it now. FIFA have accepted that we must move to another hotel."

The Independent said that FIFA agreed to pay for 50 rooms and security at the new hotel, while the Norwegian Football Association will pay for any extra charges to accommodate the hotel switch.

Toronto Blue Jays reliever Braydon Fisher’s father, Normand Fisher, died at 65 during the team’s road trip to California on Monday.

The Blue Jays were playing the San Francisco Giants, and Norm Fisher, who grew up in Vanden, California, was visiting friends from his high school before the game. After the visit, as Normand was heading back into the city, he suffered a stroke.

Braydon Fisher, who has been on the bereavement list since his father’s death, spoke glowingly of his "amazing" dad on Wednesday.

"He was an amazing person," Fisher said, via MLB.com. "I’ve heard you say this about myself, and he always loved when you all said this, but there was never a bad day for Norm. His name was Norm. There was never a bad day for him."

"He was always happy, cheerful and willing to help anybody. He loved people. He did everything as perfectly as you could. He was very proud of what he had."

Normand was an officer in the Air Force for eight years. Braydon is in his second season with the Blue Jays and said his father was an ardent supporter of both his son and the team.

"He played baseball and he loved baseball. Growing up, if it had a score, it was on the TV. He loved watching it and he loves all the guys. I don’t think that for the last two years, you’d see him not wearing Blue Jays gear. Not ever. No matter the occasion."

"He always supported me in every single way," Fisher said. "He did everything he could to make sure I achieved the dream I’d talked about since I was five."

Braydon, 25, said that while his father played baseball, his mother said the Blue Jays reliever got his athletic ability from her.

"He liked to talk about being a good baseball player," Fisher said with a smile. "I always gave him (a hard time) for that. My mom always tells him that I got my athletic ability from her."

Braydon thanked the Blue Jays for their supporting not just him but his family as well.

"I just want to thank the whole Blue Jays staff for how amazing they’ve been supporting me and my family," Fisher said. "Getting flights, hotels, giving me as much time as I needed and all of the nice messages."

Fisher is expected to be activated from the bereavement list during the team’s series against the San Diego Padres. He made his MLB debut last season and has quickly become a trusted member of the Blue Jays’ bullpen.

Last season, Fisher went 7-0 with a 2.70 ERA over 52 games, striking out 62 hitters in 50 innings. This season, he has continued to be a stabilizing presence for manager John Schneider. In 43 games, he is 3-3 with a 3.33 ERA over 43 games, while striking out 46 hitters in 46 innings.

Trump administration expands 'Product of USA' label as push for American-raised beef grows

FIRST ON FOX — The Trump administration announced on Friday that 10 additional companies will put a "Product of USA" label on their meat and poultry products that originate from farms and ranches in the United States.

This push began earlier this year as a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) initiative aimed at making it easier for consumers to know whether they are supporting American meat producers at the grocery store.

"President Trump has made it clear that when American families buy American products, they should know exactly what they’re getting," Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins said in a statement first obtained by Fox News Digital. "The Product of USA label gives consumers confidence that the meat, poultry, and egg products they purchase come from animals born, raised, harvested, and processed right here in the United States."

The USDA finalized the updated standard of what qualifies as American meat in 2024, marking a shift from past labeling rules that critics said allowed some imported meat to say it was U.S.-made as long as it was merely processed domestically.

Rollins added that as more companies adopt the voluntary label, independent ranchers, family farmers, and small- and mid-sized meat processors will begin to reap the benefits.

"USDA will continue working every day to strengthen domestic food production and ensure American agriculture remains the strongest in the world," Rollins added.

The 10 new companies adopting the "Product of USA" label include Harris Ranch and One World Beef, both based in California; Upper Iowa Beef; American Foods Group; Agri Beef in Idaho; FPL Food in Georgia; Hadrick Farms in South Dakota; Fort Worth Meat Packers in Texas; Wholestone Farms in Nebraska; and Harrison's Poultry in Illinois.

The program will provide up to $500 million to help eligible small- and mid-sized beef processors to expand their domestic operations.

To be eligible, companies need to be U.S.-owned firms under federal inspection, according to the USDA. They also cannot hold a dominant position in the beef processing market.

A senior official in New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration planned to meet with Iran's ambassador to the United Nations before the State Department reportedly intervened, and the meeting was canceled.

Commissioner Ana María Archila, leader of the Mamdani administration’s Office of International Affairs, was scheduled to meet with Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir-Saeid Iravani, Tuesday, the City Journal first reported.

A U.S. official familiar with the matter confirmed to Fox News Digital that the meeting had been scheduled. The State Department did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

The reported intervention marks the second known instance in recent weeks in which the Trump administration has stepped in over the Mamdani administration's contacts with foreign leaders, highlighting growing federal scrutiny of New York City's international outreach under its new socialist mayor.

The Office for International Affairs coordinates closely with the State Department on many diplomatic matters because of New York City's role as host to the United Nations.

Once the State Department became aware of the planned meeting, it was called off and State Department officials met with Mamdani officials to clarify acceptable conduct, a State Department official told the City Journal.

The Iranian mission declined to comment on the meeting to Fox News Digital. "That meeting did not take place, it will not take place and I did not know about it until there was a press inquiry regarding it," Mamdani said during a press conference on Friday.

Pressed on whether he supported such a meeting, he added: "I've said that that meeting will not be taking place. Thank you all very much."

Trump has repeatedly said he is "No. 1" on Iran’s "kill list," and Israel recently shared intelligence with the U.S. president about an Iranian plot to assassinate him, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The reported Iran meeting would mark the second known instance in recent weeks in which the Trump administration intervened over the Mamdani administration's contacts with foreign officials.

She had no prior diplomatic experience before taking the role, and in 2022 ran for lieutenant governor of New York.

We grabbed another win yesterday as France advanced to the semifinals. It wasn't just a win, but a 2-0 victory as predicted. I didn't bet it, but the odds on that exact score had to be a decent payday for you. Today brings us just one game in the World Cup, and the winner will move on to play France in the semifinals. Let's try to grab a bit more cash as Spain takes on Belgium.

The Spanish team remains one of the better groups remaining in the World Cup. If you're considering the remaining teams, I think you have to assume that either Spain or Argentina will be the biggest threat to France. Spain is led in scoring by Mikel Oyarzabal, and my biggest concern is that they don't have enough guys to get goals. With only nine goals in the World Cup, over five games, they could certainly use more scoring in general. They have five guys with one goal each, which is a testament to how many different people have made an impact, but they will struggle if Oyarzabal can't lead the way.

In their path to getting to this game, Spain started with a draw against Cape Verde. We know now that the Cape Verde team had a lot of heart and was very good in the World Cup. That final was 0-0. In the second game, they were able to win 4-0 over Saudi Arabia. That's a game they were supposed to dominate, and they did it. The final game of the Group Stage saw them win 1-0 over Uruguay. They had a fairly lucky draw against Austria in the Round of 32 and dominated, winning 3-0. Then they ended Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup career with a 1-0 win to get to this game.

Belgium is probably a team most readers are a bit more familiar with, having seen them play in their last match. It wasn't the most-watched game of all time like the England-Mexico match, but having knocked out the United States, there were plenty of people watching them play. While Spain is led by one guy, I would say that Belgium is also led, but not dominated, by one person. Romelu Lukaku is their best scorer and has recorded a shot in each game and a shot on goal in the past three games. Belgium has four guys on the squad with at least two goals.

I've already mentioned the last game that Belgium played, but let's explore their path to this matchup. They've had a relatively easy path, starting with a draw against Egypt, which also gave Argentina a scare (and arguably should've won). Then playing Iran to a draw as well. When they needed a win, against New Zealand, they got it, winning 5-1. They also beat Senegal 3-2, before taking down America 4-1.

There are two things I like in this game: the first one is both teams to score. This is slightly pricey with a -145 line, and Spain hasn't exactly looked like an offensive force, but I think they should be good enough to get one against a Belgium team that has given up plenty of opportunities to opponents. In fact, in all but one Belgium game, the teams have both scored.

The other angle I like in this one is over 2.5 goals scored. Again, Spain seems to be more defensively focused, but Belgium is an attacking team. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 2-1 victory for either team here. I just don't have a good feel for which team comes out on top (which usually means that there is some value in the underdog). Give me the over.

DOJ accuses Maryland of 'active and deliberate effort' to prevent deportations of illegal immigrants: lawsuit

The Department of Justice sued Maryland over its sanctuary policies, accusing the state of engaging in an "active and deliberate effort" to obstruct federal immigration enforcement.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Maryland federal court, comes after the U.S. attorney general in February 2025 ordered the DOJ's civil division to identify state and local policies that provide sanctuary to illegal migrants. Since then, 20 other lawsuits have been brought, including against Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois and New York.

The DOJ's suit against Maryland argues that the state's Community Trust Act, passed this year, "jeopardizes the public safety for all Americans" by purposely thwarting immigration-related arrests and deportations.

"Federal immigration officers merely enforce the laws that our Nation’s elected representatives in Congress passed, reflecting the will of We the People," Associate U.S. Attorney General Stanley Woodward said in a statement. "Today’s suit proves that this Department will never stand for such lawless action from blue state leaders."

The lawsuit also said that Maryland's law violates the supremacy clause of the Constitution, which says state laws must be compliant with federal law.

DOJ lawyers argued that the Community Trust Act has led to local authorities not cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other immigration officers.

They pointed to an incident on May 29, 2026, when a warden of a Worcester County Jail told a detention and deportation officer that as a result of the Community Trust Act, his facility "would no longer honor ICE detainers, release individuals to ICE custody, or notify ICE when individuals are in custody and ready for release."

"The facility denied a scheduled ICE pickup that morning and did not release the individual in question to ICE custody," DOJ lawyers wrote.

DOJ ESCALATES BLUE-STATE ICE STANDOFF AFTER STATES REFUSE KEY FEDERAL REQUEST

The text of the law says Maryland correctional facilities may not transfer individuals into federal custody without a "valid judicial warrant."

The DOJ argued that immigration law allows arrests through administrative warrants, not just through warrants signed by a judge.

Most local law enforcement officers in Maryland agree with the federal government's assessment of the Community Trust Act.

In late May, 17 of Maryland's 24 sheriffs sued the state, saying the law "interferes with the ability of sheriffs and local detention centers to coordinate with [ICE] regarding individuals in custody who may pose threats to public safety."

The sheriffs claimed in a statement that Gov. Wes Moore, who was named in the lawsuit, told them during a phone call that he "was aware of the unintended public safety consequences this legislation could have on our communities."

Moore did not sign the Community Trust Act, but under Maryland law, a bill approved by both chambers becomes law if the governor does not sign or veto it within 10 days.

Moore's office confirmed to Fox News Digital that this phone call took place and that Moore "explained his rationale for letting the bill go into law without his signature."

Moore previously said that despite the implementation challenges, the Community Trust Act keeps "local law enforcement focused on the work that has helped drive Maryland’s historic reductions in violent crime."

A representative from Moore's office also told Fox News Digital that the Community Trust Act allows local authorities to coordinate with federal immigration officers "when it comes to people convicted of serious crimes."

Moore's office declined to comment on the DOJ lawsuit but offered a statement attacking President Donald Trump's approach to immigration enforcement.

"Maryland will work with the federal government when that coordination makes our people safer – but we will not let Donald Trump’s untrained, unqualified, and unaccountable ICE agents deputize our law enforcement officers to do immigration work," the statement read.

The office of Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown — who was named in both the federal lawsuit and the complaint filed by the collection of sheriffs — declined to comment.

Fox News Digital reached out to the DOJ, the White House and the Department of Homeland Security for comment.

The CEO of a popular U.S. gaming brand on Thursday was appointed to a high-level Federal Reserve task force despite ongoing fury over her company's recent firing of 1,600 workers while being approved to hire thousands of foreign visa workers.

Asha Sharma, who heads Microsoft's Xbox division, announced the layoffs earlier this week. Microsoft said that it will lay off 4,800 people in total, while it had been approved earlier this year to hire 2,273 foreign H-1B visa employees, according to data from U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS).

At the height of the wrath over the layoffs this week, the Federal Reserve moved forward with appointing Sharma to a newly-created advisory role within the central bank.

"Each task force will carefully consider whether policymakers' means and methods, analytical tools and policy approaches can be improved upon," he continued. "I am honored that the best minds from a range of disciplines have agreed to work with us to sharpen our performance as an institution."

Many of the same critics who raged at Sharma, Xbox and Microsoft over the perceived replacement of American employees with foreign visa workers continued their tirades after the announcement.

"Reminder that she had zero gaming experience when she was promoted to run Xbox, and she has zero finance or economic experience now that she's promoted to advise the Federal Reserve, said one X user. "Her one function is to purge white Americans and replace them with Indian cheap foreign labor."

XBOX and the Federal Reserve did not return Fox News Digital's requests for comment.

Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance announced on Tuesday a large-scale investigation into H-1B visa fraud.

"Today, I’m proud to announce that the federal Department of Labor has started dozens of subpoenas and investigations into foreign fraudsters who are trying to take advantage of the H-1B visa program," he said during a press conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

"American jobs ought to go to American workers and not foreign fraudsters and the Department of Labor is fighting back against it."

Immigration has become one of the most important issues of the decade for American voters, and it's easy to see why.

Thanks to Joe Biden's lax deportation and border policies, President Donald Trump inherited a mess that his supporters have called upon him to clean up.

His methods have drawn scrutiny, namely from the left, but former Border Patrol chief, Greg Bovino, joined "Tomi Lahren is Fearless" and expressed his thoughts on the deportation operation as a whole, revealing that there is still plenty left to get done.

"I've got no regrets about anything," Bovino said. "Except, that I wish I had gone even harder."

The former Border Patrol Commander-at-Large says he "still has gas in the tank" when it comes to enforcing immigration policies and also suggested that Trump may have been swayed to relax his stance on immigration from polling numbers.

"If I had something to do over, I would have briefed Trump face-to-face and cut out that team... that maybe plied him with polling and things like that."

It's a fascinating peek behind the curtain and helps to explain why maybe there seemed to be a shift away from the more aggressive ICE operations from earlier in the year.

"I would have loved to have arrested, oh, I don't know, 99 million of those 100 million illegal aliens that are still here," Bovino said.

"90% are people saying, 'Can I get a picture with you? Thank you. We're sorry what happened to you,'" Bovino explained. "That lets me know that what we were doing was accepted by, as we always said, 90% of the public."

His unapologetic stance certainly rubs people the wrong way, but Bovino explains that enforcing the law is something no one should be sorry for.

"I'm very unapologetic," he told Lahren. "I won't apologize for a legal, ethical, lawful, and much needed law enforcement mission."

The Fort Worth Police Department acknowledged that an officer made "certain statements that were not accurate" during a viral encounter last month with a Christian street preacher outside a Pride festival, while maintaining that the citation he received stemmed from the use of a bullhorn that allegedly violated the city's noise ordinance, not the content of the preacher's speech.

According to the department, officers responded to a June 27 incident at Trinity Pride Fest, after nearby business owners complained that the amplified sound disrupted their operations and drove away customers.

A video posted on X on July 8 by Rich Penkoski, who identifies himself on his social media as a Christian street preacher, said, "Fort Worth Police officer says calling a biological male a male is a gray area that could be citable at some point and then says he can't do anything about half naked men running around children at pride."

In the video, a male Fort Worth police officer said calling a biological male a "sir" is a "gray area" and that he would potentially ticket people for "offensive" language.

Penkoski appeared in another July 8 video he reposted on X from Libs of TikTok where a female officer said, "If someone is offended by your talking, then we have a problem."

"You're going to ticket us for 'offensive' speech?" a man asked the female officer in the video.

"Yes, absolutely," the female cop responded, saying it was called disorderly conduct.

In another video posted on X on July 9 by the male Fort Worth Police Department officer, Penkoski wrote, "Did the Fort Worth Police set us up for a citation? Sure looks like it."

In a statement to Fox News Digital, a spokesperson for the Fort Worth Police Department said, "The City of Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Police Department recognize that incidents involving First Amendment activity require thoughtful consideration and understanding of the law."

"In response to an incident that took place on Saturday, June 27, at Trinity Pride Fest, the City and FWPD have carefully reviewed the incident, officer response and resulting social media posts," the spokesperson added.

According to the Fort Worth Police Department, the preacher outside the festival used a bullhorn that nearby business owners said disrupted their operations and drove away customers. Officers warned the individual that continued use of the amplification device would violate the city's noise ordinance. After the person continued using the bullhorn, police issued a disorderly conduct citation, seized the device as evidence, and said the individual remained free to continue protesting without amplification.

"FWPD remains committed to protecting the constitutional rights of all individuals, regardless of the content or viewpoint of their speech," the department said in its statement. "A video that has circulated online captures only a portion of the interactions between the officer and the individuals involved. FWPD acknowledges that an officer involved in the incident made certain statements that were not accurate."

The department continued, "The City of Fort Worth Law Department will provide refresher training to Fort Worth Police Officers and new trainees on First Amendment protections and related legal issues for persons expressing free speech, protesters, and other similar activities. FWPD continuously strives to improve its procedures to ensure both constitutional rights and public safety are protected."

In a Thursday post on X, Penkoski wrote, "Police officers have been violating preachers' 1st amendment rights for years. This isn't new, we just got it on video, and they can't walk it back or deny it," with a stop emoji and a film emoji.

"As a street preacher, it is not my job to coddle anyone or go soft on sin," Penkoski continued. "People are dying and going to hell everyday and we have to warn them. The Bible tells us on some have compassion and others win with fear. The Bible also says God will send a cruel messenger to those in rebellion. 📖🔥 Please support street preachers."

In a Friday X post, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon reposted one of the videos about the incident and wrote, "Troubling. Our @CivilRights team is on it."

Rosa told Fox News Digital she believed Persephone has broken out.

"I think she's one of those talents that – she bet on herself a long time ago. She was a luchadora. She had a mask. She lost her mask and she's been working very, very hard to make that opportunity for herself," Rosa said. "And I think that she has found her time. And it's been this year, I think she's been the breakout star of the year I will say. I think when she started coming last year and doing some of the shows, people started seeing how talented she was."

Rosa said she’s seen Persephone’s growth as a wrestler firsthand and has the ability to make fans cheer for her even though she’s presented as a heel.

Lightweight design, full-size performance

After using impact drivers from brands like DeWalt, Bosch and Ryobi, the Craftsman immediately stood out because it was noticeably lighter in my hand. That made it easier to use for longer projects without my wrist getting tired.

Despite its lighter build, it doesn't feel underpowered. While building a picnic table and repairing raised garden beds, it drove long deck screws into pressure-treated lumber without any lags. It isn't quite as fast as my comparable DeWalt driver, but with a little extra forward pressure, the performance gap was surprisingly small.

One charge lasts through multiple projects

While some online reviewers criticized the battery life, I found it lasted much longer than expected. On a single charge, I built a picnic table, repaired a few garden beds and assembled a wooden pallet bar, and still had enough charge left to tackle smaller jobs the next day. None of these were quick five-minute jobs. They took several hours spread across a single weekend.

A built-in LED for low-light jobs

I often find myself working right up until sunset, so the built-in LED has become one of my favorite features. While installing planter boxes one evening, it lit up my work area well enough that I didn't have to stop and grab a flashlight. It also stays on for a few seconds after you release the trigger, which made it much easier to line up the next screw.

Swap bits in seconds with one hand

One feature I appreciated almost immediately was how quickly I could swap bits between jobs. Whether I was drilling pilot holes or driving screws, I could change bits in a couple of seconds without reaching for extra tools. That's because the Craftsman drill uses a keyless chuck instead of the older keyed design that requires a separate chuck key.

While drilling drainage holes into a concrete planter, the bit stayed securely locked in place without slipping. Later, I switched to driving screws into planter box brackets, and changing between bits only took a few seconds.

What I didn't like

If I had one complaint, it's that the charger isn't particularly fast. It's compact and takes up much less space than some competing models, but that convenience comes at the expense of charging speed. Expect to wait a few hours for a full charge, so it's worth keeping a spare battery on hand if you have bigger projects planned.

Bottom line: A budget-friendly impact driver that delivers

After a few weeks of regular use, I'd buy this Craftsman impact driver again without hesitation. It isn't the fastest model I've used, and I wish the charger worked a little quicker, but neither issue outweighed its lightweight design, solid battery life and dependable performance.
