SEN RAND PAUL: DC's Russia sanctions bill won't stop Putin — but it will hurt you

Congress may soon consider the Senator Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia Act of 2026 — a bill that epitomizes how out of touch Washington’s foreign policy establishment is with everyday Americans. The legislation is the latest counterproductive attempt to hold Russia accountable for its war against Ukraine, now well into its fifth year. But don’t let sympathy for Ukraine fool you: this legislation is a tariff bill that seems to have been written with such blind rage that, rather than compel a change in Vladimir Putin’s behavior, its punitive measures would make American families poorer and undermine our national interests.

The Graham Sanction/Tariff bill, if passed, will likely be the largest tax increase ever passed by a Republican Congress and cost the American people half a trillion dollars. The bill would slap a 500 percent tariff on all U.S. trade with Russia and give the President unilateral authority to impose up to 100 percent tariffs on all goods imported into the United States from the top five largest importers of Russian crude oil or natural gas and countries who facilitate Russian oil sanctions evasion.

Those countries currently encompass China, India, Japan, Azerbaijan France, Hungary, Belgium, and Slovakia — with the addition of Russia, this encompasses nearly 40 percent of the world’s total population. While some countries may be exempted if they work to reduce Russian energy imports, the list of penalized countries is subject to change every 180 days. U.S. partners such as Turkey, Brazil, South Korea, and the European Union, that continue to import Russian oil and gas out of necessity, may soon find themselves put on the list.

This tax will, of course, be collected primarily on the American companies who import goods from these countries. When tariffs are placed on products made in China, the average American pays that tax when they shop at Walmart or any other store that offers Chinese-made products. One way to understand how tariffs work is to look at who is applying to get refunds since the Supreme Court struck down the emergency tariffs — Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, Target, General Motors, and UPS, are among the companies expected to receive billions of dollars in refunds. China isn’t on the refund list because China doesn’t pay the tariffs. American importers and retailers pay the tariffs, and they pass the cost of the tariffs onto you, the consumer.

While Vice President Vance may disdain the legacy of Milton Friedman, Friedman’s genius was in pointing out that tariffs are sold as "protective measures" when in reality a tariff only "protects the consumer very well against one thing . . . low prices."

If the tax proves so onerous as to prevent trade with these countries the disruption to our economy could be worse than the Smoot Hawley tariffs that exacerbated the Great Depression. Smoot-Hawley raised the average tariff by 20 percent, which almost seems quaint compared to the increases threatened by the Graham legislation.

China and India, in particular, are vital U.S. trade partners. In 2025 the United States imported over $308 billion worth of goods from China and over $103 billion from India. Middle and low-income Americans enjoy a higher quality of life when they have more purchasing power for everyday necessities. Imposing a 100 percent tariff on all goods imported from these countries is the economic equivalent of shooting ourselves in the foot. What are we going to say to the minimum wage workers who need to buy a new part to fix their car so they can get to work, the parents trying to buy their kids new shoes for the school year, or the single mother buying diapers, when they notice that prices have doubled?

Perhaps the geniuses who think it’s a good idea to pursue policies that raise prices during an election year when Americans’ primary concern is the cost of living aren’t so smart after all.

It is also unclear how tariffs could even be imposed on members of the European Union, like Slovakia and Hungary, as the EU handles trade as a unified bloc. In 2025 U.S.-EU bilateral trade was over $1 trillion. Trying to tariff individual EU countries may very well result in the EU retaliating in unison against the United States — an economically disastrous possibility for American families.

The bill also imposes more futile sanctions on Russian officials and companies. Russia is subject to over 26,000 sanctions and no one can point to any change in Russia’s behavior. Additionally, the bill bans U.S. citizens from conducting business and investment in Russia, and gives the President authority to sanction any foreign person he determines is undermining Ukraine.

What that means in practice is anyone’s guess. Our Polish ally recently had a significant diplomatic fallout with the Ukrainian government as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy named a military unit in honor of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army — a militant group responsible for the murder of some 100,000 Poles during World War Two. Is the Polish government undermining Ukraine? Is Congress really prepared to give the President unilateral authority to sanction some of our most steadfast allies?

To top it off, the bill includes a mechanism for Congress to prevent a President from removing tariffs or sanctions, but no way for Congress itself to remove them. This authority could therefore last far beyond President Trump and who knows in what manner a future President may seek to abuse such power.

It is foolhardy to think that Russia, having sustained some 1.4 million casualties, thousands of economic sanctions, and over four years of economic isolation, will now come to the negotiating table because the United States decides to tariff third countries. Moscow may in fact welcome the United States inflicting unnecessary economic self-harm and further degrading its relations with many of the world’s other great powers like India, whose rise could serve U.S. interests in our competition with China. Instead, we may drive India into the open arms of the People’s Republic.

Congress should reject this misguided bill that will do nothing to bring peace to Ukraine, but rather raise prices for American consumers, further weaken the dollar, and destroy U.S. relations around the globe.

Veterans fought for these benefits. Congress can finally give them what they need

Somewhere tonight, a combat-injured veteran who was medically retired before completing 20 years of service is doing the math on a check that is smaller than it should be. The law still forces veterans to trade away part of the retirement pay they earned in order to receive the disability compensation they are owed.

Down the hall, someone who loves that veteran is doing math of their own. This caregiver is one of 14.3 million military and veteran caregivers in this country, and the work they do without pay is worth upwards of $400 billion a year. Many caregivers left their jobs and sacrificed their income and retirement savings to care for a loved one, absorbing costs they were never meant to bear alone. They have been waiting for needed support too.

That was not their choice. Congress made it, and Congress has left it in place for years. Recently, that pattern repeated. The House was scheduled to vote on this bill that would address this head on, but unfortunately that did not come to fruition.

For the veteran doing the math tonight, that is not an abstraction. It is the distance between what they were promised and what they receive.

For the caregiver beside them, and for the surviving spouses this bill also reaches, it means support the country has long owed and rarely delivered. It is the kind of help that lets veterans heal at home, among the people who know them best, rather than alone.

VETERANS COULD DECIDE THE MIDTERMS, AND THE VA IS WHY

We know the package has drawn hard questions about how it is paid for. The Veterans Administration (VA) proposed a rule related to sleep apnea and tinnitus that would generate cost savings. Despite objections from The American Legion and other large veteran service organizations, the VA has not withdrawn this proposed rule and testified that it would be finalized by the end of this fiscal year.

The VA has since confirmed it intends to move forward with those changes. That confirmation narrows the choice to two paths: the rule is withdrawn, or this bill passes and the savings stay with the men and women who earned them and their families. That means if we don’t act, billions of dollars will be returned to the Treasury and go from supporting veterans to funding other causes.

Former North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole’s vision for what is possible for America’s caregiving families, including the veterans for whom they care, is written into the heart of this bill. America just marked its 250th anniversary, and the tributes have already been spoken, especially for those who gave their lives in service to this nation. The veteran doing the math tonight, and the caregiver beside them, have heard every one.

What they have not heard is a yes. A missed vote does not lessen the urgency. It raises it. Right now, votes in the House and Senate stand between the veteran community and these benefits. MORNING GLORY: President Trump, Iran and Napoleon’s still-relevant maxim

The future of the West and President Donald Trump’s reputation within it through the centuries will depend on the outcome of the ongoing battle with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

America is decisively winning that battle, but it has not yet won it. In fact, the U.S. could lose the battle. If President Trump perseveres, that will not happen. If he abandons the battle, it could very well be the worst foreign policy debacle for the U.S. since the end of the Vietnam War, rivaling even that of the catastrophe of President Biden’s command to American forces to quickly depart Afghanistan in 2021.

Because of those two competing futures, it is highly likely that President Trump will persevere. And he should.

IRAN IS NOT A NORMAL NATION YOU CAN MAKE DEALS WITH; IT’S A NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT

Iran is run by religious fanatics. That is the overarching reality about the defining threat Iran poses to the region and indeed the world. The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps ("IRGC") that the repressive regime cannot be "deterred" in the way other evil tyrannies can be deterred.

Xi Jinping can be deterred. Vladimir Putin can be deterred. Both have no evident desire to die, or for history to end.

Iran cannot be deterred from its mission to destroy Israel and the United States, because destruction and even defeat in this battle is not what ultimately matters the most to the theocrats atop the Islamic Republic. "Martyrdom" is itself the best result for any individual caught up in Khomeinism. "Regime survival" is a secondary goal to its leadership’s personal worldview, an extreme version of a minority branch of Islam often called "Twelver" theology.

IRAN TO EXECUTE FIRST FEMALE PROTESTER TIED TO ANTI-REGIME UNREST

The defining belief of Twelver Shi’ism is that the Twelfth Imam, Muhammad al-Mahdi, did not die, entered occultation (a state of concealment) in the 9th century, remains alive by God’s will and will return at the end of time as the Mahdi to establish justice and peace. A group within "Twelver" believers assert that turmoil may help usher in the Mahdi’s return.

When Iran’s first tyrant, Ayatollah Khomeini, drank the infamous "poisoned chalice" and accepted a 1988 ceasefire with Iraq in the brutal 1980-1988 war, that "Supreme Leader" did not remotely fear a popular uprising by his own people. Khomeini believed that he had time on his side for the instrument of worldwide salvation that he believed the Islamic Republic to be.

Today’s dictator, Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp Commander-in-Chief Ahmed Vahidi, knows the regime is already on borrowed time. Shattered and facing a ruined economy experiencing hyperinflation that will only grow worse, the economy cannot support the 90+ million who depend on it. That means inevitable rebellion by the people followed by revolution against the IRGC.

Vahidi’s predecessor in the role of top tyrant, the now dead Ayatollah Khamenei, took the "Tiananmen Square" option when hundreds of thousands if not millions of protesters took to the Iranian streets in January of this year. Like Chinese dictator Deng Xiaoping in 1989, Khamenei ordered the murder of as many citizens as it took in January to suppress the sort of uprising that threatened the regime.

That wicked choice worked — once — in China in 1989. It worked again in January in Iran. Popular uprisings in both countries were brutally repressed.

But as countless dictators have found out, from Assad in Syria and Gaddafi in Libya to Ceausescu in Romania and Jaruzelski in Poland and Honecker in East Germany among dozens of other toppled tyrants, a regime that survives because of tens of thousands of secret police and their auxiliaries cannot stand against a people of millions much less tens of millions absent the sort of surveillance state China has built and brutally enforced.

Iran does not have that surveillance state. Vahidi knows his already badly weakened regime cannot survive years into the future. That fact means the religious mission — the prime directive of "Twelver theology" — cannot again be made subservient to "regime survival" as it was in 1988. If the regime isn’t going to survive and its leaders know that, they must act with increasing violence to serve the mission of destroying the "Little Satan" of Israel and preparing the way for the Hidden Imam.

So Vahidi and his minions will never ever agree to anything other than ruses that allow them to seek the WMD with which to destroy Israel and perhaps trigger the return of the "occulted Hidden Imam." Study what Pickaxe Mountain is and what end it must serve. It’s the last best chance for Iran to "break out" and obtain a nuclear weapon. Our heaviest and most destructive ordinance, the "bunker busters" President Trump used to obliterate Iran’s second most deeply-buried nuclear weapons facility at Fordow, may not work against Pickaxe. Bombing around the site may set back construction, but it cannot destroy the caverns and everything the Islamic Republic is building within it.

That’s the set of facts that sits before President Trump: A regime run by religious fanatics, one rich in oil revenues if allowed to resume the export of oil, and one executing its back-up plan to build nukes in a cavern so deep it cannot be destroyed by conventional weaponry.

Both the First Gulf War and the second war with Iraq were "perfectly executed half maneuvers," the sort of strategic hesitation in the middle of a grand plan that leads to military defeat. So too, it is often argued, was the invasion of Afghanistan.

Of many famous maxims about war from this millennium, perhaps the most famous is the one attributed to Napoleon that is featured in the subtitle: "If you start to take Vienna, take Vienna."

That maxim has never been verified as having been said by France’s military genius but is often cited because in that sentence is contained worlds of strategic thinking refined into 8 words. The sharp point is to pursue a military campaign in pursuit of a grand strategic goal to its successful conclusion. Tactical victories or defeats do not matter. Once begun, pursue the battle to its successful conclusion. Half measures or abandoned plans are lethal to a nation’s victory and survival.

Many in legacy media are quick to note that President Donald Trump is loathe to be labeled in any way as "like" President Barack Obama. (There is no danger of comparison of the always energetic, always "on" President Trump with the infirm President Joe Biden.)

Now President Trump is assailed by almost every Democrat and some Republicans — including, no doubt, some in the West Wing — for initiating this battle with Iran. The critics argue that President Obama would never have taken the action President Trump has. The president should ignore them and resolve to "take Vienna." Nothing else will secure the country, the region and the world.

"These people are crazy," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said about the religious fanatics running Iran. "They are scum," President Trump has added.

Whatever you think those tyrants are, some of them are deeply convicted believers in an "end times" theology that would not hesitate to use nuclear weapons to destroy Israel and possibly bring the Twelfth Imam out of his "occultation." Most of the West doesn’t want to deal with the implications of a theocracy bound up in medieval theology and run by fanatics in possession of WMD. President Trump is willing to do so and has acted on it. Now he must finish the job.

Arkansas cop tragically dies saving fiancée's life just hours after proposing

An Arkansas police officer drowned after entering a river to save his fiancée just hours after proposing to her, according to her mother.

Fred Marsh, 24, of the Rogers Police Department, entered Missouri’s Elk River on Saturday to help another swimmer and did not resurface, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. His fiancée’s mother identified that swimmer as her daughter. Marsh was recovered and pronounced dead Sunday after asking his fiancée, Hailey, to marry him Saturday morning.

"They had been together for three beautiful years, and they had a very beautiful, loving relationship," Sheryl Padgett told KHBS. "Even though legally he was not my son-in-law, he will forever be my son."

The pair, who had been together for three years, were out canoeing with another couple on the river near Noel, Missouri, when Hailey entered the water and began struggling against the current while trying to return to the boat.

‘HERO' MOM DIES AFTER USING LAST STRENGTH TO SAVE 4-YEAR-OLD SON FROM FLORIDA RIVER

Marsh and a fellow Rogers police officer who was with them then jumped into the water to help her, Padgett said. They were able to move her to safety, but Marsh became distressed and exhausted, went underwater and never resurfaced, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

"He saw the love of his life in distress, and he was going to help his friend and do what a good human would do," Padgett said. "He gave his life helping someone else."

Padgett said Marsh was loving, hardworking and guided by his Christian faith, emphasizing that he never hesitated when someone needed help.

"There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for anyone," Padgett said. "You didn’t have to tell him. You didn’t have to beg him. He just was willing and would jump in there and do whatever it took to help someone."

Padgett said she had lost her only son in a fatal accident four years earlier. She began calling Marsh her son soon after he started dating her daughter.

"We instantly made a connection and a bond," she said. "I called him son, and he called me mama."

A motorcade escorted Marsh’s body through Northwest Arkansas on Monday as people lined up along the route to honor him. Padgett said the response from law enforcement and the community showed the impact Marsh had made on many others.

"They made it very clear that Fred was not just their family, but so was my daughter, my family and, even more importantly, Fred’s family," Padgett said.

Marsh was in his first year with the Rogers Police Department. He graduated from the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy in April and only recently started working as an officer.

A GoFundMe created for Hailey by her sister to cover her lease, bills and other unforeseen expenses has raised nearly $2,000 as of Thursday morning.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Marsh’s family, and Padgett said the family expects officers, former classmates, childhood friends and others from across the state to attend.

"Let’s do something in Fred’s honor," Padgett said. "Be kind to your fellow man. When Fred loved, he loved with everything he had, and he loved well."

Nicaragua's parliament plans to eliminate elections to codify President Ortega's declaration

Nicaragua's lawmakers announced plans to abolish elections in the Central American country, following through on President Daniel Ortega's declaration over the weekend that there would be no more elections, which enraged the international community.

The move was revealed on Tuesday by Nicaragua's congress, which is firmly in the hands of Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo. Lawmakers said planned constitutional overhaul will ensure Nicaragua's "peace, security and stability."

With the announcement, lawmakers are making good on Ortega's promise of no more elections, further closing off any potential path for the opposition to challenge the government he leads with Murillo, whom constitutional reforms elevated from vice president to "co-president."

"There won't be any more elections here for them to try to seize the government and seize power," Ortega said on Sunday during a speech commemorating the 1979 Sandinista revolution, in which Ortega participated in the overthrow of the U.S.-backed dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza.

NICARAGUA'S ORTEGA SAYS COUNTRY WILL 'NEVER AGAIN' HOLD ELECTIONS, SHUTTING OUT OPPOSITION

"The days when parties backed by the Yankees (United States) and the Somocistas would return to power are over — never again," he declared.

The declaration appeared to eliminate the possibility of a future electoral challenge as Ortega and Murillo continue consolidating control over the country’s political institutions.

Ortega and Murillo expanded their authority through sweeping constitutional changes that took effect in 2025. The reforms included extending the presidential term from five years to six and placing the legislative, judicial and electoral institutions under the authority of the presidency.

The pair now exercise control over nearly every branch of government, including the armed forces, police and judiciary.

Ortega, Nicaragua’s longest-serving leader, has remained in power until early 2028, although his statement on Sunday effectively canceled Nicaragua’s next elections, which had been scheduled for November 2027.

Critics say Ortega had already effectively eliminated meaningful electoral competition during elections in 2011, 2016 and 2021.

REPUBLICAN REP MARÍA ELVIRA SALAZAR DECLARES, 'AFTER CUBA, NICARAGUA IS NEXT'

Many prominent opposition leaders have been imprisoned, forced into exile or stripped of their Nicaraguan citizenship, while opposition parties and independent civic organizations have lost their legal status.

A United Nations group of experts has accused the Ortega-Murillo government of systematically violating human rights as part of a campaign to eliminate criticism and preserve its hold on power. The experts said some alleged violations may amount to crimes against humanity.

The government launched a violent crackdown on anti-government protests in 2018. More than 300 people were killed during the unrest, according to international human rights groups.

Ortega's effort to abolish elections prompted widespread condemnation from foreign governments, including the U.S.

"Daniel Ortega’s declaration that under his family’s dictatorship, Nicaragua will never again hold elections lays bare their true authoritarian nature. Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo have abandoned even the pretense of popular consent," U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday.

"The Nicaraguan people have the right to choose their own leaders through democratic elections. The United States calls on the international community to join forces to demonstrate to the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship that it cannot expect to maintain business as usual with other nations when it is thwarting the basic tenets of our democratic hemisphere," he added.

The Trump administration has described the Ortega-Murillo government as a dictatorship and imposed sanctions on members of the government and their allies. The State Department has also enacted visa restrictions targeting more than 2,350 Nicaraguan officials and their family members.

Volker Türk, the United Nations' high commissioner for human rights, denounced Nicaragua's legislative ambitions on Wednesday, saying that "people of all political viewpoints must be allowed to vote and run for office."

"These latest developments further deepen the severe restrictions on fundamental freedoms, the dismantling of civic space, and the steady erosion of the rule of law," Türk said in a statement.

Border K9 sniffs out 99 pounds of prohibited meat, plants and monitor lizard in suitcase from Thailand

A Customs and Border Protection agriculture detector helped discover nearly 100 pounds of prohibited meat, plants and wildlife products inside luggage arriving from Thailand after alerting officers to the suitcase, authorities said.

CBP said K9 Maisy alerted officers to the bag, which contained 50 pounds of meat, including raw meat, 33 pounds of mangoes, garlic, bamboo, banana plants and approximately 16 pounds of Bengal monitor lizard. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service took custody of the monitor lizard.

A 26-year-old Missouri man's dramatic attempt to outrun police by diving headfirst off a bridge was caught on video.

Video released by the Stone County Sheriff's Office shows Gavin Thor Lundgren, of Kimberling City, sprinting across a two-lane bridge before launching himself headfirst into the waters of Table Rock Lake after leading deputies on a chase during the early morning hours of July 18.

"This was definitely a first and luckily he survived the fall," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "He resisted arrest and deputies suffered minor injuries taking him into custody."

Lundgren was arrested and charged with three counts of third-degree assault on a special victim, resisting arrest for a felony, resisting arrest by fleeing and careless driving.

According to a probable cause statement, deputies attempted to stop Lundgren around 1:50 a.m. after spotting his 2004 Chevrolet Malibu traveling nearly 75 mph in a 45-mph zone, according to KOLR.

Instead of pulling over, authorities said Lundgren led deputies on a pursuit before abandoning his still-moving car and diving off the bridge into Table Rock Lake.

Three deputies were injured while taking Lundgren into custody, authorities said.

Officials said deputies suffered injuries including facial bruising, cuts to their hands, elbows and forearms, and abrasions.

Lundgren is being held in the Stone County Jail without bond.

Just a few weeks ago, the Boston Red Sox were one of Major League Baseball's biggest disappointments.

Despite their hefty payroll and a roster filled with stars and exciting young prospects, injuries had ravaged much of the team's depth through the first half of the season. Entering July, the Red Sox were dead last in the American League East at 37-48. They had the third-worst record in the AL as a whole, were 14 games out of first place and seemed posed to become sellers at the trade deadline. As recently as June 21, they had just an 8.4% chance of reaching the postseason, per FanGraphs.

Then, history.

Even without key players like Garrett Crochet, Trevor Story and Roman Anthony, the Red Sox entered a day-night doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday having won 14 games in a row. Sure enough, they jumped out to a four-run lead they never relinquished, with the game fittingly ending on a great defensive play by shortstop Tsung-Che Chung.

That 15th consecutive win tied a franchise record set 80 years ago, and became just the eighth winning streak of 15 or more since 1961. And the first since the St. Louis Cardinals in 2021.

"You keep stacking one win over another, and then you get close, and once you get within three or four, they start to feel like playoff games because you want to get there," infielder Caleb Durbin this week, per MLB.com. "But yeah, then you look back at it, and think about where you're doing it and how long this franchise has existed. It's pretty incredible."

Jonathan Rodriguez's double off the Green Monster helped force Eduardo Rivera from the game in the first inning.

The Red Sox couldn't get anything going offensively though, falling 5-1 and coming up just short of even more history.

Still, what an incredible achievement. It not only turned their season around but also upended the American League East and postseason races. They went from being buried and seemingly out of the playoff picture before July to not losing a game from July 1 through July 22.

Before the loss in the night game, Boston's postseason probability had soared to 67% thanks to taking over sole possession of the third wild card spot in the AL. Remarkably, after the win in the day game, they moved to within six games of first in the AL East. Though the Rays win and Boston's loss made it seven entering Thursday.

From sellers to... buyers?

Crochet is hoping to return by the playoffs, but even with Ranger Suárez returning soon, Boston would love to acquire more starting pitching. Roman Anthony has yet to start swinging after tearing a ligament in his finger, and Trevor Story is still a ways away, meaning Boston could use offense too.

All that raises the question, how have they done so much winning with all the injuries? A combination of timely hitting, quality pitching and, of course, luck. Boston has the best team ERA in baseball in July, and an .877 OPS with runners in scoring position over the same timeframe. That'll work.

15 games in a row is remarkable, especially with those injuries. And Red Sox fans can now dream of getting Anthony, Story and Suarez back for a playoff run. With Crochet looming if they get there. Not too shabby, considering where they were entering July.

Far-left streamer Hasan Piker told New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to "shut the f--- up" and urged progressives to present their policies more boldly during an interview released Wednesday on Zeteo's "We're Not Kidding" podcast in Washington, D.C.

"I just listened to his new New York Times conversation where The New York Times asked him, like, ‘If you had unlimited money, what would you do?’" Piker said. "He’s like, ‘Exactly the same policies I’m implementing.’ I’m like, ‘Shut the f--- up, dude.’"

Piker's criticism came during a broader discussion with Zeteo founder Mehdi Hasan about whether left-wing politicians are too concerned with optics and too willing to retreat when their positions draw criticism.

Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez for comment, but did not immediately hear back.

The lineup for this year’s WNBA All-Star 3-point contest has been a talking point in the sports world since it was announced.

New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu was among the most notable players absent from the annual competition.

Ionescu addressed the speculation ahead of Wednesday’s Liberty-Sky matchup, pushing back against reports that she chose not to participate in this weekend’s WNBA 3-point contest in Chicago.

"I can't decline an offer I never got officially invited to. So, was pretty surprised to see that. Never got invited," the defending 3-point contest champion told reporters pregame.

Caitlin Clark and Kayla McBride were also among the high-profile stars who reportedly declined invitations to the competition.

"Whether it's against Steph Curry or in the W, I always go out and try and beat my record, every single time I've gone out," said Ionescu, who has won the 3-point contest twice, highlighted by her record-setting 37-point performance in 2023.

"I just kind of wanted to set the record straight," she continued. "Like that was just false, but I'm really excited for the participants in it, and obviously there's going to be a new winner. So, I'm excited to see who wins."

Ionescu later referenced her previous 3-point showdown with Stephen Curry when asked a follow-up about the issue.

The confirmed list of 3-point contest participants includes Dallas' Azzi Fudd, Atlanta's Rhyne Howard, Golden State's Janelle Salaün, Portland's Bridget Carleton, Toronto's Marina Mabrey and Seattle's Natisha Hiedeman. Howard and Mabrey are the only players in that group with prior 3-point contest experience at All-Star weekend.

Earlier this week, Ionescu refuted a report that she had opted out of this year’s festivities, commenting "lies" under a since-deleted Bleacher Report Instagram post. McBride also weighed in via social media, saying her agent had texted her about the event in the 48 hours before her Instagram story post, but no formal invitation ever came.

"Posting things like I'm afraid of shooting smoke is weird and if you didn't hear it from me prob shouldn't believe it," McBride wrote. "We should focus on the great shooters in it already!!! Because there's some killas in there."

Bear caught on camera perched atop New Mexico utility pole before reportedly suffering fatal electrocution

A bear that climbed to the top of a utility pole in rural New Mexico became the subject of a viral video this week before reportedly later dying after the unusual encounter.

The video, recorded Monday near Gladstone, New Mexico, roughly 170 miles east of Santa Fe, shows the bear precariously perched on the crossarm of the utility pole while panting and trying to maintain its balance high above the ground.

The U.S. Department of the Interior shared the video Wednesday, joking, "We appreciate the enthusiasm for American Energy Dominance, but this isn't what we meant."

The Department of the Interior and the New Mexico Department of Wildlife did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

The footage, verified by Storyful, also includes audio from a 911 caller reporting the unusual sight.

"I'm calling to report a bear on top of a light pole," the caller tells a dispatcher.

The dispatcher responded that state officials had already been notified but said tranquilizing the animal while it remained atop the pole could have caused it to fall.

Shannon Mullens, who recorded the video, told Storyful she was traveling from Red River, New Mexico, to Oklahoma on Highway 56 when she and her family spotted what they initially believed was a dead bear.

"We really didn't believe what we saw at first, so we turned around to get another look," Mullens said.

"At first, we thought that the bear was dead, until we got closer to it, and then we realized that he was still alive."

Wildlife experts say bears can climb utility poles after becoming startled by people, traffic or dogs, treating them much like trees while trying to escape danger.

A personal dispute between two teachers who were formerly a couple erupted inside a Miami charter boarding school, ending with both under arrest after investigators say a classroom meeting turned violent.

According to a Miami-Dade Schools Police arrest affidavit obtained by Fox News Digital, Terrod Tiyan Torrence, 36, and Odiria Biggins were previously involved in a romantic relationship and share a child together.

A few days before the confrontation, Biggins told investigators Torrence left a handwritten note on her desk asking if they could talk.

She agreed to meet him July 17 inside Classroom 119 at The SEED School of Miami, the affidavit said.

What began as a conversation quickly turned physical, according to investigators.

But the confrontation didn't end there, investigators said.

After regaining consciousness, Biggins allegedly walked to her vehicle, grabbed a canister of pepper spray and later tracked Torrence down elsewhere on campus before spraying him, according to Miami ABC affiliate WSVN.

Surveillance video captured Biggins entering a classroom where Torrence was, the outlet reported.

Moments later, both emerged with Torrence appearing to struggle walking and suffering visible eye irritation before school staff rushed to help him. He was later taken to a hospital for treatment.

Biggins was arrested Monday and charged with discharging a weapon on school property for allegedly using pepper spray on campus, along with misdemeanor domestic violence battery, according to WSVN. A judge found probable cause and set her bond at $2,000.

Torrence was arrested Tuesday by Miami-Dade Schools Police and charged with misdemeanor domestic violence battery.

Court records show he was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center before appearing before Judge Alicia Garcia Priovolos, who imposed a $2,000 standard bond and a pretrial no-contact order barring him from contacting Biggins. His arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 23.

Jack Smith hit with criminal referral as GOP moves testimony fight toward prosecution

FIRST ON FOX: Former Biden special counsel Jack Smith could face potential criminal prosecution after Republicans accused the ex-prosecutor of misleading Congress about the scope of his investigation into President Donald Trump.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, issued a criminal referral for Smith Wednesday, arguing newly released records contradict Smith's testimony to his committee that he did not obtain or review lawmakers' text messages during his multiple probes into President Donald Trump.

"All individuals have an obligation to comply with a duly authorized congressional inquiry. Mr. Smith, a former public servant, is no different," Jordan wrote in a letter to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche on Wednesday. "Yet his testimony included intentionally false statements designed to obstruct the Committee’s oversight.

"His conduct can only be understood as an effort to thwart the Committee’s inquiry by intentionally making false statements and representations before Congress," Jordan continued, adding that the Justice Department should examine whether Smith's actions warrant criminal charges.

Jordan’s letter accused Smith of making false statements during a December deposition before the House Judiciary Committee. Specifically, Jordan argued that "responses provided by Mr. Smith gave the impression that neither Mr. Smith nor his team had access to the content of members’ privileged text messages."

"We now know this to be false," the letter adds.

The referral comes after Smith faced mounting scrutiny from Republicans over allegedly weaponizing the Justice Department and violating constitutional privacy protections during his investigations into alleged interference during the 2020 election and Trump’s handling of classified documents.

He has denied any wrongdoing.

And Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, blasted Jordan's referral.

"This referral deliberately distorts and misstates the facts, including what questions the Republicans actually asked at Mr. Smith's interview. The Republicans fault Mr. Smith for not reading the minds of congressional investigators and for not volunteering information they didn't ask for. This is absurd. Mr. Smith may be telegenic but he is not telepathic," Raskin said in a statement.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, released documents last week showing Smith's team read the text messages of 44 members of Congress from both parties and White House staff during its investigation.

Targeted lawmakers included Jordan and Grassley in addition to the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.; Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine; House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La.; and Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J.

Trump officials affected included former Vice President Mike Pence, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, FBI Director Kash Patel and Ivanka Trump, among others in the president's orbit during his first term.

When Smith was asked by congressional investigators if he examined the contents of lawmakers’ text messages during his probe, he said, "no."

He told the House Judiciary Committee his team only sought telephone toll records.

"Toll records were sought for historical telephone routing information, collected after calls had taken place, identifying the incoming and outgoing call numbers, the time of the calls and their duration," Smith testified in December. "Toll records do not include the content of calls."

A survivor of the Nova music festival terrorist attack by Hamas pushed back against a video released by Zohran Mamdani calling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a "war criminal," saying the New York City mayor’s comments were "dangerous."

Mazal Tazazo made the remark in a video shared on X by radio host Jason Rantz, one day after Mamdani said Netanyahu was "the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people."

In Mamdani’s message, he said he agreed with the International Criminal Court that "Benjamin Netanyahu should be arrested and tried for his crimes" and urged the federal government to carry out an arrest warrant if Netanyahu visits New York City in September for the U.N. General Assembly.

"I was shocked today when I saw that video. It's so dangerous," Tazazo said.

"If you want to really want to understand what's going on here, so come," she added. "I'm Mazal Tazazo, nice to meet you, survivor of the Nova. You can come to Israel, nobody gonna arrest you, OK? You can come to Israel and hear my story and hear the story of Israel and go around the place."

Rantz wrote on X that Tazazo "absolutely unloaded on Zohran Mamdani for threatening to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu."

Oakland baseball team will host 'historic' 'family-friendly' marijuana-themed game day

The Oakland Ballers, an independent professional baseball team in Oakland, California, says it will host a "family-friendly" cannabis game night July 31.

The team is partnering with Oaksterdam University, the nation's first cannabis college, for the event on "Grateful Dead Night."

The team will temporarily rebrand as the "Oaksterdam Blazers" and wear uniforms featuring the moniker.

"The game marks a historic first in professional baseball as the Ballers become the first professional team to partner with and celebrate the legal cannabis industry during a live game," the team wrote in a press announcement in June.

MLB also became the first major professional sports league to sign a sponsorship agreement with a CBD company in 2022.

The Oakland Ballers did not immediately return Fox News Digital's request for comment.

The event highlights the California city's long history at the center of the marijuana legalization movement.

A social media attack by two far-left House Democrats on moderate Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., backfired after one confused him with another Jewish Democrat named Josh, and a New Jersey centrist used their votes for Ukraine aid to turn the exchange back on them.

The clash erupted after Gottheimer criticized the growing influence of democratic socialists within the Democratic Party.

"The DSA are not Democrats. They’re socialists, who want to hijack the Democratic Party," he wrote in an X post Monday.

The next day, Rep. Summer Lee, D-Pa., fired back by accusing him of being among the Democrats who "sign bombs and vote to drop them," apparently confusing Gottheimer with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

Shapiro, not Gottheimer, signed an artillery shell bound for Ukraine during President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s 2024 visit to Pennsylvania, Fox News Digital reported in September 2024.

"You know that’s the other Jewish guy named Josh, right?" Gottheimer said in response to Lee.

"Squad" Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., then jumped in to defend Lee, writing that Shapiro had signed "the bombs you voted to be dropped."

Neither Omar nor Lee identified a specific vote, but Gottheimer turned the accusation back on both lawmakers by pointing out that they had voted for a $60.8 billion Ukraine aid package before Shapiro signed the Ukraine-bound artillery shell.

"Ilhan, you know who else voted for it?" Gottheimer said in response, including a screenshot of the "Official House Roll Call" for the April 2024 vote on H.R. 8035. "You."

The exchange comes as Gottheimer has increasingly accused his own party of applying a double standard to antisemitism. In a May New York Times opinion piece, the Jewish congressman argued that Democrats routinely condemn antisemitism from the political right but are too often silent when it emerges from the far left, calling the disparity a "glaring double standard."

That intraparty divide has also widened over support for Israel.

According to the official House roll call, Lee and Omar were among 103 Democrats who voted last week for a failed amendment from Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., that would have prohibited funds in the underlying bill from being used for Israel and reduced the foreign military financing account by $3.3 billion. Gottheimer voted against the amendment.

Fox News Digital reached out to the offices of Gottheimer, Lee and Omar for comment but did not hear back in time for publication.

One of the most memorable moments of the inaugural Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend didn't happen during the race or even qualifying.

It came in the first practice session of the weekend, when then-Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz hit a drain cover, causing serious damage to his car's floor and energy store, while also damaging then-Alpine driver Esteban Ocon's car.

The session was red-flagged and eventually canceled, delaying the second practice session by hours as crews worked to repair the circuit and ensure the other drain covers were secure.

This delay led to thousands of fans leaving before the next session could get underway.

According to The Las Vegas Review Journal, court documents revealed that a federal judge agreed and gave preliminary approval for a settlement with LVGP and its parent company Liberty Media Corp. of just over $3 million, which is slated to get final approval in November.

"The settlement establishes a $3.05 million common fund for holders of approximately 32,000 eligible tickets," Dimopoulos said in a statement to The New York Post. "Individual payments will vary depending on ticket type, participation rates, attorney’s fees, costs and administrative expenses."

Of course, the amount of money each person gets will depend on how many claimants there are. But you do the math: if all 32,000 eligible folks decide they want in, it would leave you with enough to buy a hat at the next Las Vegas GP if you're lucky.

FIRST ON FOX: A Pennsylvania woman who defrauded the federal government out of $1.7 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds in the wake of Hurricane Ida was sentenced to five years in prison, the Justice Department said Wednesday as the Trump administration continues its effort to crack down on fraud.

Jasmine Williams, 34, of Plymouth Meeting, pleaded guilty last year to 32 charges ranging from fraud related to a major disaster declaration to wire fraud and mail fraud.

"Under the leadership of President [Donald] Trump and Secretary [Markwayne] Mullin, FEMA is rooting out fraud in disaster aid," Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis exclusively told Fox News Digital.

"We are protecting taxpayer dollars and making sure disaster assistance goes to those who truly need it," Bis continued. "Anyone who tries to steal from survivors will be caught and held accountable."

Officials said Williams solicited participants in her scheme — renters, homeowners or the homeless — and submitted fraudulent documents to FEMA on behalf of almost 200 others, including fraudulent leases, letters from landlords, utility bills, earning statements and home repair estimates.

She recruited the participants over social media, advertising that she could assist them in applying for FEMA benefits, prosecutors said.

Williams additionally used social media to solicit images of damaged homes to submit in support of her fraudulent applications, federal prosecutors said.

Talk show host Jon Stewart asked New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani where he disagrees with fellow democratic socialists who are rising in the Democratic Party during Wednesday's episode of his podcast, "The Weekly Show."

Stewart, who has long been a fixture of centrist Democratic Party politics, noted on his show that times have changed in that "now democratic socialism is considered the hottest trend in the Democratic Party, and there's grassroots energy and all. And these democratic socialist candidates are popping up, and you're having to answer for every one of their policy positions.

"Look, maybe I'm an old man or a s--- lib or whatever they want to call me," Stewart said. "If someone says we're going to abolish all prisons and borders, like I do go, ‘I don't think that's a good idea.’

"Like, it feels like order and security is also a progressive value. Why shouldn't people in neighborhoods with less resources have the same safety and security that neighborhoods with lots of resources?"

Mamdani went on to say he is comfortable with such discussions, so long as they are productive.

"Well, I'm comfortable with disagreement, and I'm comfortable with disagreement that doesn't end the conversation entirely because I think what motivates a lot of people is, ‘How do you deliver public safety?" Mamdani said.

"And the thing that I've said time and again is, ‘We cannot have New Yorkers choose between safety and justice.’

Mamdani went on to agree that one’s safety should not depend on how upscale their neighborhood is.

"I think, to your point, you know, when we're thinking about safety, there cannot be a hierarchy of safety where you experience it more or less depending on where you live in our city or how much money is in your pocket," Mamdani said.

"And there also can't be a definition of safety that is purely after the fact, meaning how you respond to violence. We also have to do the work of investing so that we prevent violence."

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations on Wednesday blasted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as a "clown" for demanding federal authorities arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when Netanyahu arrives in the city.

Danny Danon’s remarks came after Mamdani accused Netanyahu of being a "war criminal" and the "architect of a horrific genocide" against Palestinians while calling on the federal government to execute an International Criminal Court arrest warrant against the Israeli leader.

Netanyahu is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly in Manhattan in September.

"Those baseless remarks about harassing the prime minister — it's a joke, and he's a clown," Danon told Fox News Digital Wednesday.

"Everyone knows it's a show. It's a stunt," Danon added. "A mayor should be dealing with the homeless people, the garbage in New York, and leave foreign affairs to the people in Washington who are elected to do it. He should take care of the security of the people in New York, especially the Jewish community, which is seeing the rise of antisemitism. That is his first responsibility."

The YouTube channel for the New York City Mayor's Office released a video July 21, "Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal."

"Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal, the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people," Mamdani said, repeating comments he made in an interview with The New York Times.

Mamdani leveled a series of allegations against the Israeli leader, claiming he was "responsible for the killing of more than 73,000 people, for the maiming of tens of thousands of children, as those who survive undergo amputation without anesthesia."

He also accused Netanyahu of targeting neonatal hospitals and maternity care centers and alleged that he blocked food and humanitarian aid.

Danon pushed back sharply against the mayor's accusations.

"There is a lot of humanitarian aid coming into Gaza every day," Danon argued.

"Nobody speaks about those issues anymore, but he wants to resume spreading blood libels, promoting the claims of genocide, starvation and all those lies that were spread by him, by his wife and by other people during the war.

"He wants to go back to this situation, but today there are no humanitarian issues in Gaza," Danon added.

"Mamdani continues to promote those blood libels against Israel and against the Jews."

Mamdani also said that City Hall cannot act on the warrant unilaterally.

"It is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant. The federal government, however, does, and I call on them to join the ICC and execute this warrant," Mamdani said.

"Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal at large."

Israeli officials strongly deny all charges. Netanyahu’s office has rejected the ICC’s jurisdiction, labeling it "a kangaroo court that has no jurisdiction over Americans or Israelis."

"People are smart; they know there's no legal basis for his remarks," Danon said. "The U.S. is not part of the ICC. There is no warrant that is actually effective against the prime minister in the U.S. So it's a political stunt."

"We have serious issues to deal with — the war with Iran and other critical matters.

"The prime minister is not actually dealing with Mamdani's remarks at all. He said it very clearly: He intends to come and speak at the U.N.

Burger King's announcement of the changes drew varied reactions from social media users.

"Listening to your guests and acting on their feedback is what builds long-term loyalty," one user wrote on LinkedIn. "Excited to see Burger King continuing to invest in both the guest experience and the restaurant teams that make it happen every day!"

"Love to see a brand that actually listens to its guests," another wrote on the platform. "The 'Your Way Champion' role + Whopper Guarantee is a brilliant move. This is how you raise the bar in QSR [quick service restaurants]. Excited to experience it!"

"Shout out to a couple of champions," a Facebook user wrote of a recent experience at a Burger King in Canada.

"I don't think I have ever seen two people enjoy doing their job and looking after the customers as I did. Aalisha and Erwin were both happy, personable and an absolute delight to observe while I sat in this super clean restaurant. I have been in the hospitality business for over 20 years and am hard to impress ... but they did it. Well done."

A couple of other social media users expressed disappointment, claiming Burger King is prioritizing its customers over its employees.

"Burger King is the worst place to work for," one person wrote on LinkedIn. "I've been there seven and a half years, and I'm a breakfast coordinator. I make $16.35 an hour, and they refuse to give me a raise, which is bull crap."

"We don't make that much and work way too hard to be doing all that," someone else wrote on Instagram. "I've noticed this company really likes their customers more than their own employees. It's sad."

Several other commenters chimed in on specific menu items they have missed or would like to be brought back or changed. Many users expressed love for the Whopper, which Burger King describes as "America's favorite burger" and "the brand's most beloved item."

"Actually, I don't care about the service, I just really like the Whopper!" someone wrote on Facebook.

Burger King will continue gathering feedback and using it to "turn those insights into meaningful improvements across our restaurants," the chain told Fox News Digital.
