Florida's Key West has had its share of famous residents ranging from Ernest Hemingway to Tennessee Williams to Jimmy Buffett. But few have carved their name into Keys history in as infamous a manner as the drug-dealing local fire chief in the 1970s, a man by the name of Joseph "Bum" Farto.
After allegations of drug trafficking from his post at the fire station, Farto was convicted on drug charges in 1975. Soon after, the fire chief with the distinctive name was snatched in front of his house while driving his lime-green car that bore his signature license plate that read "El Jefe," or "the chief" in Spanish.
Now a little piece of the Farto legend is for sale. The home he lived in on United Street has been listed for $579,000. The 1,216-square-foot home has three bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, a covered carport, and an updated interior. Megan Behmke is the listing agent.
After the incident in front of this house, Farto was never seen again, passing into Key West legend. The question " Where is Bum Farto?" made it onto a popular T-shirt that Buffett often wore at concerts. Now a buyer can create his own Margaritaville in this infamous little corner of Key West.
