Lots of changes are in the air for Patrick Dempsey, former teen heartthrob and for 10 years -- until [SPOILER ALERT!] he was just killed off the show -- the main man on "Grey's Anatomy." Off camera, Dempsey and his wife, Jillian, are getting a divorce and they put their lovely Malibu, CA, home on the market.
With the home's gorgeous spaces indoors and out, there's plenty of design inspiration for your own home and garden -- and budget buys to bring them to life.
Water feature: Malibu gardens often use water features as a focal point. Dempsey's is a simple Zen bowl style, a modern twist on the traditional outdoor fountain. But this look doesn't have to be expensive -- here's a great alternative for under $200.
Boxed garden: Instead of planting flowers directly in the ground, Dempsey's garden features a series of rustic container boxes filled with native flowering plants and surrounded by a pea gravel path. The effect is both earthy and contemporary, and gives a sense of structure to a collection of plant clusters. A handyman or landscape designer can create these boxes for only a few bucks, using reclaimed, sun-bleached fence boards. Fill them with soil and add bright native plants (drought-tolerant, in the West). The finishing touch is the pea gravel path, a budget-friendly hardscape material that runs less than $4 for a 0.5-cubic-foot bag.
Climbing wall: Dempsey's home features an outdoor exercise area, complete with a boxing bag and a climbing wall. The wall's colorful holds also form a sort of 3D sculpture against the rustic wood backboard. It's not hard to create a climbing wall at home with the right materials; here's a site that offers climbing holds made from recycled material, and a set of 50 is only $80.
Industrial island: Rough-hewn elements such as industrial lighting, reclaimed wood, and vintage hardware have been popular accents in design for several years, and Dempsey's wood-and-metal worktable is a great example. It functions as an island, but its exposed shelf and metal legs add an industrial feel to the kitchen. Here's a similar one from World Market that's only $450.
Lounge dining: Instead of traditional dining chairs, Dempsey's farmhouse table is surrounded by living room furniture. The armchairs and armless couch give the area a cozy, lounge feel that encourages guests to stay and relax. Creating custom upholstered pieces like this can cost thousands of dollars, but Overstock has a stylish $425 sofa, a $190 side chair, and a $300 wingchair.
