He is billed as “the greatest American architect of all time” by the American Institute of Architects, but yet, Frank Lloyd Wright never attended architecture school. Despite no formal training, he completed over 500 works in his lifetime, varying from single-family homes and offices to skyscrapers and museums. While his architecture is widely acclaimed, his buildings are also reportedly dogged by structural issues from small (leaky roofs) to severe (cracking beams). Notable FLW buildings that have been problematic include Fallingwater, the Guggenheim Museum and the Ennis House, as chronicled in the London Sunday Times Magazine’s article, “How Many Wrights Make a Wrong?” Despite these issues, many consider owing a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. According to the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy there are over a dozen original Wright-designed homes currently on the market and less than 300 original Wright houses left in the world. Alice Millard House (“La Miniatura”) Location: Pasadena, CA For Sale: $4,995,000 After a multi-year restoration, the Alice Millard House (also referred to as “La Miniatura”) is back on the Pasadena real estate market. La Miniatura was the first home that utilized Wright’s textile block building technique. It was also the first residence Wright dubbed as a “Usonian” house. Internationally known for it’s architectural uniqueness, this property includes both a main house and studio. In total there are 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, 2 kitchens, a formal dining room, and is situated on nearly an acre surrounded by gardens and is located inside the Prospect Historic District of Pasadena. William E. Martin House Location: Oak Park, IL For Sale:$1,295,000 Completed in 1903, the Martin House symbolizes Wright’s classic Prairie design and sits on over an acre of Oak Park real estate with a large yard, re-created koi pond and privacy walls. Created so nature can be seen from almost every nook and cranny, the 5-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home boasted original woodwork, 59 art glass windows, and multiple porches.The Martin House first hit the market in February 2010. Ennis House Location: Los Feliz, CA For Sale: $5,999,000 Originally listed in April 2009 for $15 million, the Ennis House stands as one of Mr. Wright’s most famous works and also one of the most unique properties on the Los Feliz real estate market. The 6,000-sq ft home was built in 1924 for Mabel and Charles Ennis. Constructed entirely of concrete block and perched high on a hill, the mysterious appeal made it a hot item in the horror world of Hollywood. The Ennis House has been used in movies such as “Blade Runner,” “House on Haunted Hill,” as well as TV shows like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Twin Peaks.” Despite its rich Hollywood history, it still remains unsold. In February 2010, Zillow reported the 4-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom residence took a $5 million price chop, bring the price down to $7,495,000. Gridley Residence Location: Batavia, IL For Sale: $1,450,000 Among many other talents, Wright was known as a leader of the Prairie School movement of architecture. The Gridley Residence, built in 1906, is considered one of the largest Prairie-style homes in the Wright collection. The 5,100-sq ft home sits on 2.3 acres of prime Batavia real estate just 30 miles west of Chicago. While preserving the historic integrity of the home, the current owners updated the 5-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom home with a new gourmet kitchen, media room, game room and ironwood veranda. Randall Fawcett House Location: Los Banos, CA For Sale: $1,999,000 Who needs another project when they’re working on the Guggenheim Museum? While working on the historic museum, Wright was also busy designing the Randall Fawcett House — another concrete block masterpiece with mahogany and glass accents throughout. In addition to 3,800-sq ft, 6 bedrooms, and 4.5 bathrooms, Curbed reports the mid-century modern home, completed in 1961, uniquely features a copper fascia and horizontal roof line, Koi pond, Japanese garden, and a 12-foot-wide fireplace . Avery Coonley House Location: Riverside, IL For Sale: $2,890,000 The Avery Coonley House joins the Gridley Residence as one of Wright’s remarkable Prairie-style structures. Constructed from 1908-1912, the Coonley House is one of Riverside real estate‘s most notable properties and has been beautifully restored to all of its Frank Lloyd Wright glory. The 5-bedroom, 5-bathroom home is built of stucco and ornamental tile and features 6,000-sq ft of living space, beamed ceilings, wine cellar, a reflecting pool, large back deck, and sunken garden. Bunker Hill House Location: Houston, TX For Sale: $3,290,000 The only house Wright commissioned in the Houston area wasn’t always architecturally appreciated. According to Curbed, the Usonian original was threatened by a wave a redevelopment hitting the Bunker Hill real estate market in 1991. Instead of throwing in the towel, the current owners adapted the 1954-built home with modern amenities and expanded the living space from 1,200-sq ft to over 8,000-sq ft. Recently reduced in price from $3,500,000 to $3,290,000, this 6-bedroom, 7.5-bathroom home is a truly a rare piece of Houston real estate with a courtyard swimming pool, two kitchens, gated entry and all the FLW perks preserved.
