A man was arraigned on manslaughter charges Tuesday, accused of driving drunk and killing an off-duty police officer on his motorcycle.

Kevin Casado was driving a minivan in Manhattan early Monday when he struck Alexander Felix, 31, whose motorcycle slammed into another car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the arraignment hearing on charges of vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated, Casado was ordered to post $50,000 bond or $25,000 cash and was told to return to court July 6. If convicted of vehicular manslaughter, Casado, 32, would face up to seven years in prison.

Casado, who pleaded not guilty, posted the bond and will be released in a few days, said his lawyer, Deron Castro.

Castro said his client is a hardworking father of three who has been a doorman for years and has no history of drunken driving.

"It was a tragic, tragic accident," he said.

Felix had celebrated his third anniversary with the police department on Sunday.
