The House Ways and Means Committee on Thursday appointed Rep. Sam Johnson, R-Texas, to serve as interim chairman while the Republican Steering Committee searches for a new chairman.
The change came soon after Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., was voted in as the speaker of the House, and resigned from his leadership position on the committee.
Johnson, 85, has served as chair of the Social Security Subcommittee since January 2013 and will resume his role there when a permanent Ways and Means chair is chosen.
"I am honored to serve the Ways and Means Committee during this time of transition," Johnson said. "Under Chairman Ryan's leadership we have enjoyed great successes, and I will continue to focus our efforts on critical issues moving forward."
