Should he win re-election, President Obama says he'll view that as a mandate that his approach to the nation's debt and deficit is the way to go.
Speaking on MSNBC's Morning Joe this morning, Mr. Obama said, "After the election, I think that both Democrats and Republicans have to step back and say 'you know what? This is something that the country wants to solve.' If I've won, then I believe that's a mandate for doing it in a balanced way."
The president is also predicting that the Republican party's energy, which had been focused on defeating him, will turn inward. Echoing an oft-repeated Obama campaign theme that the Republican Party has become influenced by extreme elements, the president offered this, "The question's gonna be, how do Republicans in Congress react post-election? Because there's gonna be a war going on inside that party. It just hasn't broken out. It's been unified in opposition to me."
That was likely a reference a remark by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) that his number one priority was to make Mr. Obama a one-term president.
The president said once all of the "ideological underbrush" gets cleared out after the election, the two parties can join together to get things done on issues of common ground.
