NORTHBROOK, Ill. -- Mark Kirk, the Illinois Republican vying for President Barack Obama's former Senate seat, says he's sorry for being careless and making mistakes about his accomplishments.
Kirk addressed supporters Tuesday in his first news conference since reports that he had embellished his military record, including claiming a prestigious award he didn't win.
The five-term congressman said he isn't perfect. He pledged he'll do better and that it won't happen again.
Kirk is locked in a tight battle for the seat with Democrat Alexi Giannoulias in one of the highest-profile Senate races in the country. Obama held the seat for four years before winning the White House, and a Democratic loss would be a major embarrassment to the administration.
