Former Democratic Virginia Sen. Jim Webb is throwing his name into the race for president.
"After many months of thought, deliberation and discussion, I have decided to seek the office of the presidency of the United States," the former secretary of the Navy and former assistant secretary of defense said in a message on his personal website, www.webb2016.com.
Webb announced in November he was forming an exploratory committee to run for president. In early June, he said he would make a decision by month's end.
He served as senator of Virginia from 2007 to 2013.
According to a RealClearPolitics average of polls among Democrats, Webb has the support of 2.3 percent of voters, enough for fourth place in a field of six current and potential candidates. The three candidates ahead of him are polling in the double-digits: Hillary Clinton has 63 percent, Vice President Joe Biden has 13.5 percent, and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., has 12.7 percent in an average of the last five major polls.
