The incoming House GOP Majority has decided to scrap the Select Committee on Global Warming, initiated by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) when Democrats seized control of the House in 2006.
From Boehner spokesman Mike Steel: "We have pledged to save taxpayers' money by reducing waste and duplication in Congress. The Select Committee on Global Warming - which was created to provide a political forum to promote Washington Democrats' job-killing national energy tax - was a clear example, and it will not continue in the 112th Congress."
Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, (R-Wis.), was the top Republican on the panel. Sensenbrenner is skeptical of climate change. But he made a case to incoming House Speaker John Boehner, (R-Ohio), to maintain the panel as a check on the Obama Administration's energy policies.
The committee was a key player in the so-called "Cap and Trade" climate bill that the House adopted in June, 2009. The measure died in the Senate.
